Our Story begins with My Perspective on the Campaign. For a frame of Reference- The DM was using the Mongoose 1st Edition Rules, and this was our first time running it.

Some People are born with a silver spoon in their hand- And Groomed into powerful positions of Influence. Some people are born gifted, changing worlds with destiny to lead them. There are even people born whom- with but a single thought, could bring worlds to heel with the power of their minds.

And Some People are born dumber then rocks.

Poor Donny-Boy Was one of these people. Born in some ass end of the Galaxy on an Imperial Ice World- Donny Boy had a cursed upbringing from the very start, Forced to Watch The Smurf's and Guligan Island reruns on (Gasp) old HDTV's from the Imperiums past. Now, if Donny-Boy had rich parents, He might of gotten on by with a 'good' Education (more like paid off) and placed somewhere where he was generally ineffective and a puppet for ACTUAL leaders to make the power plays. But All Donny-Boy Had was his dear ol' Ma and lived in squaller. Dad wasnt anywhere to be found so it was left to him to be the man of the house.

But Donny-Boy grew up right. He listened to his Ma, And learned everything he needed to from her. Donny Was a good boy, and lived by his Ma's code. He was a gentle giant of a man, whom everyone had a bit of a soft spot for.

But everyone had to grow up at some point, and Unforunately- Donny couldnt really cut it back home. Physical labour was all he was good at, and it was so goddamn cold that only drones were trusted to keep the bio-domes that barely qualified as 'liveable' in tiptop shape, and Donny never understood how any of this technology stuff worked. So, Left with no other options, He did the only thing he could do.

He enlisted.
>>
It's 10:30 Anti-Matter here, but I'm always up for a good story.
>>
Now- When all you have going for you is a sound constitution, Your options get limited rather fast. But thankfully, You didn't have to be smart to be a meat shield. So Donny-Boy joined the ground marines. After all, they had some of the highest casualty rates in the military and he had to do his part for the imperium- if he did the dangerous work, Other people didn't have to. So, Eager to do his part- He strapped on his boots and grabbed his rifle. Ma would of been so proud.

His first four years, he hit the ground running. Donny served the Imperium with distinction and pride. For some odd reason (And by odd, I mean 'His Squad mates exploited him for everything he was worth'), he was always the point man, despite being literally dumb as bricks. But just because Donny-Boy had a hard time counting, didn't mean he wasn't stupid now. Donny-Boy had an instinct for combat, and always tried his hardest. He excelled in the position he was put in- Even saved Mikey from getting his leg blown up a few times from mines the rest of the squad didn't see. In time, The squad that tried to use him as cheap fodder, eventually came to value him and his happy go lucky attitude. He was even starting to sound like an army boy, true and true.

Then the C.O Fucked up and got most of them killed.

Is this only war ruleset? Or is it some other 40K ruleset? Or is it neither?

It's Traveller, you illiterate cunt.
>>
Needless to say, this was a pretty bad way to end his first term in the Ground Marines. Donny and a few of his squad members had survived the monumental fuck up that costed them most of their men. No one knew what even happened- What was supposed to be a Milk Run, A casual smash and grab for Intel on some base running on a skeleton crew before the army stormed the place- Turned out to be a PMC's Home base, and the squad had packed light to move fast.

Needless to say, this was not the mission they had been assigned to do, and lacked a lot of the tools they needed to siege men who had laser rifles as standard armament. Veterans covered for the younger generations to fall back- as they were all captured, or killed. Donny never saw any of these men again.

It went without saying, The Squad wanted some recompense and frag the bastard. But Donny-Boy, ever the soft hearted one, went and took the blame on himself. Accidents happened, and the C.O didn't MEAN for them all to die. Donny Felt guilty about letting others fight (And die) for him. Thankfully, The squad was too busy planning out how they were going to get back at the guy, that by the time they wanted to enact their plan, Donny was already in the Brig and was going to stand trial for his C.O.

Now, When its the Village Idiot who fucked up something THIS bad, its pretty unbelievable. But, They needed to convict someone, and given the guilty party (whom quite reasonably didn't want to speak up) had a lot to lose, they had no choice but convict Poor Donny-Boy. Now, strangely enough, His sentence was to be decided at a later time, and was returned to the Brig.

Stranger yet, Donny-Boy wasn't going to be sent to a firing line or even dismissed. Rather, Within half a year, he was released and reinstated into the Ground Marines. Stranger still, In the OTHER half of the year, he was promoted.

Turned Out Donny had a new friend on the inside.
>>
So Began Donny-Boy's second Term in the Ground Marines. Saved from serving on some far off Penial World, he went right back to doing what he did best- Being Shot from High Orbit onto a planet, Hitting the ground hard, and kicking ass in the name of the Imperium. And life was honestly pretty great for awhile, if a bit harsh. But thats how Donny Liked it. He didn't have to suffer his fellow Squad mates trying to get him killed on a near daily basis. He didn't have the jitters anymore from killing people, and he was actually a damn good shot. It also Helped he was built like a 'Sherman Tank' (He saw one in a museum once.) as he would describe it.

Now Donny wasn't smart enough to pick up on the signs- But His C.O was having him run missions that would seem unusual to the standard trooper and would most certainly notice by the second or third mission out. This C.O had a bit of a grudge towards the the PMC that sort of gunned down some of his best men in his battalion- and wanted to make sure they were wiped out to the last.

Sector by Sector. World by World.

Unfortunately, When your Made Man is Donny, Your ambitions only had a matter of time before it would break at the seems. Or in this case- When the squad failed to notice a minefield and had a bad case of exploding.
>>
Now, It was just Donny-Boys Luck to survive ANOTHER squad catastrophe. That was the Good News. The bad news however, was that this time- He didnt exactly get away when his left leg went flying about 20 feet in the other direction, and the rest of the squad is ambushed to ether be mowed down or forced to surrender. At least they had the decency to stop Donny from bleeding out his newfound Stump leg.

Unforunately, PMC's didnt exactly follow traditional rules of war- and they certainly didnt have the Genevena convention pinned up on the wall. It was almost a mercy for men to have died in the ambush- Because at least they werent tortured and beatten within an inch of their life for information and labour. Donny had it the worst- Given he was missing his leg and couldnt exactly remember what he was telling the enemy. Donny-boy Knew how to resist torture as apart of standard training, but the other half of that required keeping your facts straight- and ether spilled too much information, or too little. It was practically a miracle if he could even keep the story straight for an hour.

So Donny got beat within an inch of his life. Then Again. Then Again. Then Again. Then they switched to hourly flogging. It went without saying, Life was going pretty badly for Donny at this point.
>>
It took months for a rescue team to pick up the few men that didn't die- and by that point, there was nothing to salvage from any of them. If it wasn't for the Legal Bureaucracy that was soon to fuck them over, most of these men were broken shells of their former selves. It would be years before these trained killers would even be capable of looking at a shadow without having shell shock. At the Very least- for the men whom had lost organs or body parts- they could replace those. Given the nature of the missions- The C.O Could level more resources to bear. Some of those Resources included Vat Grown Body parts.

Donny needed a new leg, kidney and eye- and spent the rest of his term recovering. Needless to say, his career as a Ground Marine was over. There was only so much his C.O could do- and as command saw it, Donny and his squad was unsalvagable. So after Eight Promising Years in the Ground Marines, He was honorably discharged carrying his Gauss Rifle and his Combat Armor with him.

But there was a difference between Donny and his former squad.

He signed back up to the draft.
>>
On a scale of 1 to 10, how closely does Donny resemble Brock Lesnar?
>>
>>48189749
Im going to go with... About a 6, to be honest. Maybe a Seven if im pushing it.

Donny, by the end of his terms- Ended with an 8 Strength, 9 Dex and 12 End. For reference, 6 is the average for a human. So Donny is actually pretty beefy for a Human, and certainly has a lot to bleed- but I think he's shooting a little short for being a Wrestler.

Close though. Also, he's got slightly longer black hair. everything else is spot on.
>>
Well, Signing back up with the draft was a bit of a strong word. He tried to reenlist with the ground marines. After all, he was a glutton for punishment, and he'd been a marine for eight years. Its what he knew how to do- and if Donny-Boy was anything, he was consistant. But unforunately, that troubling thing known as 'red tape' got in the way. A bit of an inconvience for the aspiring marine- but brighter men then he had tried and failed to get around this- and he was certainly was not going to make a dent in getting back in through brute force- Contacts or otherwise.

But Donny was a problem solver. It took him awhile to solve problems, but, By Golly, he could solve problems. His solution- if he couldnt sign up, was to gamble his fate in the lottery. Now, on an off chance- he could of been assigned to something he'd have no chance of surviving in. But what were the odds of that? He had history with being a ground trooper. A Two Term Veteran in the Ground Marines- Surely, they'd want him back, Right?

So, attending the Imperial draft in his Sunday Finest- He was immediately sorted into the career best sorted to his appitudes, after Vigorous testing. Donny-Boy, like in many things tried doing, did his best, and preformed pretty well for himself. Even as the days dragged on and the interviews continuted- he'd relentlessly persue the goal he saw before him. Donny-Boy owed it to his men. He owed it to everyone who died at that PMC Base. And by weeks end- he got his wish.

In the army.
>>
So needless to say, it didn't exactly go to plan when Donny-boy was assigned into the Army. Ground Infantry in Specific. When they had taken a look at his service record- They figured that, maybe it was a BAD IDEA to send someone who was honorably discharged from the marines BACK into the marines. Surprise, Surprise. Imperial Bureaucracy was actually half skilled at their job.

But what they had figured- was that this (Potentially) brain damaged meat head could hold a gun, and he sounded like he could follow orders reasonably well. So, they figured eugenics could take its course- and they could be rid of some less then desirable genes in the Gene pool. Two birds with one stone, in essence. It turned out they didnt even need to equip him, given he had his own tools for the job.

At least in the Marines, they tried to make an effort to disguise their ire.

So, with nothing more then a slap on the ass and a one way ticket to the nearest battlefield, Donny-boy was immediately shipped out. This was less then pleasing to Donny. Obviously, they couldn't do their job right. Then he wondered if they broke their legs, if they would lose their jobs.

It wasn't likely, But Donny-Boy was angry, and needed to vent somehow.
>>
So it was here, That Donny-Boy Began his career as a G.I. Express Airmailed to the nearest battlefield they could throw him in- without the basic training that the other grunts got. They needed men in the meat grinder as soon as possible, and they didn't want to waste time on getting some dumb muscle up to snuff. He was likely going to die before he had a taste of real combat anyway- and someone could strip him of his gun when he died anyway. That Gauss Rifle was better in an actual Soldiers hands.

The thing is, Donny-Boy was a Marine Boy. Its not like anyone bothered to read his service record, given it came from the draft office. Draftees were just kids trying to find a place in life when they weren't creative enough to get a job, and surely a Veteran would stick to his unit. Being in this Special Third Category, Donny-Boy was put into a... Unique position- Excelling where he was placed, and served with Pride and Distinction. Though, More Emphasis was on the second then the first. And His old C.O hadn't forgotten him.

Cutting lines of men down, wave by wave- He'd rapidly rise through the ranks in the Army. In time, Donny-Boy was a named to be feared on the battlefield. But It was in was his Fifth Term that he would truly distinguish himself.

Of all the things Donny could remember, He could remember this clearly. He didn't remember the date, But he remembered the Battle of Ryhdi.

His battalion was working alongside the Navy out in the border territories. Not far enough to have entered the lawless 'wild west' sectors of space that were still being colonized, but they weren't in the core worlds ether. The system they were in actually served as a choke point between the two sectors- with the planets dedicated to wartime infrastructure. Donny-boy and his unit was assigned to Fort Orion on Ryhdi- A planet that was honestly a pretty okay place to live, If you didn't mind it being colder then Cryosleep during its 18 hour night cycle. But Donny was born in the snow- This was his kind of world.

It was just guard duty at first. Donny didn't like Peace keeping operations- He wasn't good at hurting people that weren't shooting at him, and 'Peace Keeping' often meant 'Introduce Rifle Butt into angry protesters over our occupation because Bullets would rip them to shreds'. At least here- it was some ancient temples that were fortified to serve as a base. It even had a decent heater too. So Donny-Boy served most of his time, trading war stories with his pals. Most of them were just arsing around, but it turned out that one of them interested him greatly.

It turned out that there was a story going around, that some noble administrator had a midlife crisis (for as much as a doped up rich kid on Antiagathics could have one) about what he was doing with his life. So, he supposedly quit his rich- Cushy job, and signed up with the Interstellar Marines to go join the war they were apart of. The problem was, the ship he was on got boarded- and they died pretty pathetically, and they could bury what they could find in a bucket. The Admin got off easy by cowering in a corner, and begging for mercy. They only needed to transplant his brain into a new body- and replace the spinal cord.

Donny got a laugh out of that one.
>>
Donny Wasn't laughing however, when Fort Orion was getting stormed about two weeks later. Now, Normally, One would defer to the NCO Disaster Response Checklist on this one. It was standard protocol, and unlike most of the battlefields that the army fought in- they were the defenders this time, So the chain of command should of had all their shit together for once. The problem was, The C.O for THIS unit just suffered an 'accidental laser burn' and had to be transported aboard Captain Condors Ship for immediate medical attention- leaving the ground forces without an effective chain of command for their section.

Now for once, it wasn't Donny-Boy who wasn't in the loop. In truth, The C.O for this operation had a bit of an ulterior motive for moving a battalion out here. Whilst Military Production was the main output of the system, The C.O also had started to produce (And sell) Copious amounts of drugs. Loads and loads of drugs- enough to make someone- or some organization very, very wealthy. The problem was, the Captain didn't enjoy hosting drug ring in his ship, and took matters into his own hands- investigating his ship and having the criminal Apprehended Personally- before reporting to the men below that the C.O had been wounded in an accident, and they would have to make do without him.

Now, that was all fine and dandy if you weren't on the ground. But Donny-boy was. And Donny-boy with his unit- was staring down at LEAST 3-1 Odds of Fish THINGS coming to storm the bulkhead, all armed with some weird laser guns that flash fried steel. With no central command to organize the defense- each section of the wall became its own isolated pocket- separated from any form of support or resupply. And worst of all- The attack happened in the middle of the night, so half the men were freezing their balls off, and the other half HAD blue balls- So it went without saying that Morale was at an all time low.

Donny-Boy had lived his life, taking orders. Thats what he did. He didn't know how to do this 'commanding' thing. He just did what he was told. It what he had done for about twenty years of his life now. But watching the scene unfold before him- watching good men die and the very real risk of his life being taken from him by some Xenos he couldn't even hazard a guess the name of- Something snapped inside of him.

"ALLLLL RITE LADIES, Y'ALL ARE GONNA SEE HOW WE GIT IT DUN!"

It turned out that Donny-Boy was pretty good at getting people to shut up, and listen to him. He was also pretty good at telling people what to do, in a pinch.
>>
Leading the Counter Attack- Donny-Boy wasn't any good at tactics. So he went with what he knew best. Pushing the enemy back, by applying pressure in one spot until they broke. It turns out when the enemy isn't expecting the enemy to meet you on the field of battle by abandoning the fort- you can do some serious damage. especially when the enemy all files out by tossing enough grenades that the battlefield turns into a firework show- and your Carapace isn't ready for a rain of Shrapnel.

Like a plague- they swept through the Battlefield, swiping the enemy lines defeated them to the last. By no means, was it a battle without losses. Survivors could be counted in bunches, instead of hundreds. But, they held the fort. They held their post. And they survived. That what was important. (Though to command, the first two were more important then the third). And Survival did not come without merit.

Given an Honorary Medal for bravery- Donny-Boy was rewarded with Commendations extraordinary (And a few 'under the table services'.)... and his Pension. The conflict in the system, and the ride home had lasted longer then predicted- and given he had served his twenty, He was released from service. And no, he could not reenlist. His Former C.O Insisted that such a Hero deserved his rest, away from the military and settle back into civilian life, where he could be free to pursue his own goals an dreams.

By this point- Donny got the hint. And by the end of the month, He got himself a ticket to Farport. He had a job to do, after all.

>This Is Where Overly Embellished Character Creation Ends.

Was kind of hoping to actually get to where the party got together and the situation we were thrown into, But I think its better to explain exactly whats going on here, due to Traveller not exactly being a common system- and well. Not flood 4chan with shit storytime, if this is shit. (At least, Not one i'd ever heard of before this campaign, and no one i know had any clue about it.)

Essentially, Its a Random Random Gen System. And Yes, typing that twice was intentional. The game runs entirely on D6's, and the charts in this game are EXTENSIVE. This game is pretty heavily subject to the dice going every which fucking way on you, and in older editions, your character could die before he even got printed onto your sheet. And it starts with your stats.

You roll 2d6, and add your total. Thats an attribute score for you. Now, Im not sure if its straight or if our DM just let us assign it, but we got to assign it.

Now, For reference, I only got a +1 END and DEX during my Five Terms. These are the only stat boosts you can get 'Naturally', And Donny wasnt exactly blessed with stats.

There's Six Stats in the game. Once again for reference, 6 is the human Average. Ability Scores as as follows- 0 is -3. 1-2 is -2. 3-5 is -1. 6-8 is 0. 9-11 is +1 and 12-14 is +2. 15 is +3, but only the Admin got that, and he got like.... +5 in one stat. (Lucky bastard.)
>>
TL:DR- Donny is the Low Intelligence Character From Fallout, barely could write his own name, and had the social standing of a Plebeian. But, he's 6/7 out of ten of the way to being Brock Lesnar. Though on second thought, thats more like 7/8 out of ten the way there. That, or he's your standard Catachan with Brain Damage.
>>
Agh. It clipped my message for some reason.Internet has been shit all night. Sorry. Ahem.

Now, For those wondering about Donny-Boys stats, and how retarded he actually was- here you go. STR: 8 (0), DEX 9 (+1), END 12 (+2), INT 2 (-2), EDU 4 (-1), SOC 4 (-1)

About half of these are self explanatory, but the other half are not. For one-
END is Endurance, and honestly a good stat to have if your doing any of the physical vocations. Otherwise, Its the stat that determines your 'soft' HP essentially, But im not going to go into that now, or else i'd blob this to shit.

EDU is Education. Traveler Makes a Difference between 'How Smart you Are' and 'How Educated' you are. Essentially, You could be smart as fuck- but dont know how to write your own name, or you could be a 'special' child but book smart.

SOC is Social Standing. This is different if your not an Imperial apparently. But, Essentially, its your social Standing. Charisma in essence. This stat is special though for the Imps, because this can change in game play by 'buying it' essentially.

>>
As for the long ass backstory- That also plays in part twofold. You dont get to 'pick' a class in this game. You really dont. What you instead try to do- is 'Qualify' for a Vocation. Because, you know. You arent a bunch of Eighteen year olds running around like Murderhobos. You have a background. Your all 20~30+ Murder Hobos defying all reason to get rich as shit, despite having a (Un)successful career. Cuz dyin' isnt paying you enough.

Now, to be fair- Unless your trying for something your character REALLY shouldnt do (Like Donny Doing Anything Requiring his Mental Stats), The odds are in your favor. Like, I think it took a 4+ on 2D6 when he had a +1 END on the check to qualify for the marines.

Once you have Your Vocation, you pick your service for the Term. The Vocations have three, and you can switch out as you please for every term you take. As a frame of Reference- A term is four years. Every Character starts at 18 years old. You are required to take a Mininum of One, and Your max is Six. There are advantages to Young and Old Characters, so dont feel pressured to be ether way. Donny's 38 ya know.
>>
Now, Once you have what is essentially your JOB. You have two more checks to make. First- To see if your character 'survives'. Aka, did he get fired in the four years he was working. If he fails, he rolls on the disaster table (Such as when Donny got his leg blown off). I think you have a 1/6 chance of not getting fired. Not good odds.

If he succeeds, He'll make a check to see if he Advances- AKA, did he get PROMOTED in his four years. I cant remember by this point- but I DONT think you need to advance to get an event to happen. Though advancing is good, because you get an extra roll for gaining shit (Such as stats) on your tables, and ranking up comes with benefits (Skills and Cashing Out Bonuses.)

TL:DR - Choose a job your good at. Stick with it. Pray your dice dont fuck you. When you know how to build characters or how to make a concept work- then 'multi-class'. Admin Learned that the hard way.
>>
As a Final Note on Vocations and stuff- If you get Events that are opened ended (Such as Donny taking command of a heated battlefield), Try to talk with the other players. The Navy Guy literally rolled up that he successfully conducted a drug raid on his ship at the same time, and we worked it out that the only reason i got my chance- was because he zapped my commanding officer. For you Min-maxers out here, This gets you a free skill point to put ANYWHERE, and you can do this twice. Its pretty neato.

And forgot to say- if you FAIL to get the job you want, If you have two options. You cant try again, but if you want- You can ether sign up for the draft (But only once in a characters life), or become a drifter. You can always become a Drifter- but you usually dont WANT to be a drifter. Get yourself a Job Hobo. The Benefits are better, and you can become a Space Murder Hobo later on.

So, all the boring shit out of the way- This is essentially what happened to Donny in Crunch Form.

>Donny Career Path
Marines - Survived/Advanced (C.O Event)
Marines - Failed (By One. Goddamnit)- Jailor Event.
Drafted - Got Army Result.
Army - Survived/Advanced - Advanced Training Event (Succeeded Check)
Army - Survived/Advanced - Heated Warzone Event (Succeeded Check)
Army - Survived/Advanced (Heroic Leadership Event.)

He cashed out then. Not important to explain the importance of it in crunchy detail- but just know he walked out with-

26k (After Spending), A Gauss Rifle, High Grade Combat Armor (T11? 12?), A Rocket Launcher, Subdermal Armor and Extra 1 Gun Skill (For those who know, Yes. I seriously rolled the weapons result 3 times.). Not a bad haul at all. Also, Because Donny Served for 20 years in the military, he gets a Pension. so 10k every year. It'll be spent quickly, but its a nice injection of cash every so often.

Can't wait for the party to get together.

But seriously, I find Traveller's character generation system engrossing because of the life path system. Picking careers is pretty fun, especially when you have to deal with mishaps.

And then your character could die in the character creation if the rules allow it, which is fun.

Other then That, I think all thats left is the crunchier aspect of what the party Consists of.

The Navy Boy Was named like... Jonathan Condor, I believe. He just always called himself 'Joe Average' or Condor. Regardless, DESU, I think he's got equal Stats to Donny. How he differs is that he had no negatives by the time he was done with his career (Whilst Donny has +'s and -'s) - and was a pure Navy boy the entire time. He served in the Engineering Core, failing his first Advancement- but succeeding his other four, and getting a Commission down the road to get his officer rankings. I remember the most distinctive thing he had was a full Officers Regalia for his Sunday Best, and a Officers Cutlass. It was shiny.

The Admin Was Duke... Something. Thats not the part we remembered though. Remember when i mentioned 'The Admin Got a 15'? Yeah. He put a 10 in his SOC stat to immediately qualify for Noble, and then got a SOC level almost every roll. And Short of his disastrous career in the Marines (Seriously, i dont get why he did that. He could of just went 6/6 into Noble and gotten a lot more benefits out of it. He wanted the ability to fire a gun, but there are better ways then getting mangled to shit)- He was rolling great. His Mental stats were great- and his physical stats were... Average, which for these characters- is pretty damn good.

And because he got a 15 SOC, he was an offical Duke. So his Name was 'Duke, Duke something'. But we just always called him Duke, Duke if we felt like insulting him, or just Duke.

Also, Image not Relevant. Just a visual gag.
>>
>>48191091
Honestly, Its the most fun i've had genning up a character for awhile. DESU, Donny-Boy was me half not giving a shit, Because of my spread being 'Shit' (Which honestly, Im pigeon holed, but im far from shit), but as i got to play him out, I got to flesh him out more and he's a lot of fun to play.

If it isnt obvious, Donny's name comes from Donnel from FE:Awakening, and this was me silently jabbing at the GM. Sort of got egg on my face now, but whatever.
>>
Personally, Donny is the character that was the most interesting at creation. You really fleshed him out, took him places I wasn't expecting. The Duke was a pretty normal rich kid/party face, and Condor was kind of a gimmick, in my opinion.
>>
Apparently, the player playing The Duke was thinking John Wayne, rather than Duke Nukem, but whatever.
