Why does the GW painting team paint textured weapon handles in a dark red/purple color?

What material is it supposed to be? Does it have any basis in history?

I would say it's supposed to be dyed leather wrapping, and the colour choice is probably "It's more exciting than brown"
>>
>>48164095
>Why does the GW painting team paint textured weapon handles in a dark red/purple color?
Works well with the rest of the scheme. Harmonizes with the blue so it's not a color contrast and doesn't throw the scheme off even though it's a different color.
>What material is it supposed to be?
What ever you want it to be. If you paint it metal it's metal if you paint it like leather wrappings it's leather.
>Does it have any basis in history?
Do you mean if there is an official fluff precedent?
Not as far as I know, but even in real life there are dozens of different ways to wrap a weapons handle. I'm sure in a setting as big as 40k, that is essentially a conceptual sandbox, you can take some artistic license with that.

> I'd like to thank the guy who taught me about glazes and soap for improving my models.
Now I'm officially done and satisfied. Thoughts?

Your carapace armor has taken on a more warm red hue and goes much better with the warm blue and green you've used elsewhere on the minis. Good. About the only thing I'd suggest if your satisfied with the improved colors would be just a bit of dry brushing with a slightly lighter shade of gray to give the stones just a bit more illusion of depth. Otherwise - stop when you're happy with the results. Honestly while I'm impressed as hell with the pros / trophy winning painters - I sure as heck wouldn't want to spend 40 to 80 hours (or more) on every miniature I own. That said as you get better at brush control, and using various painting techniques you'll finish painting nicer minis more quickly. There's this crazy good painter from Germany called Agis Neugebauer. This guy is damn skippy fast and amazingly good.

Well, you can spend a lot of time getting good at brush control with a 00 or 000 brush. Or you can pain the studs black, carefully hit them with your metallic color, and then to get the perfect black rings around them, you could use a technical pen like pick related. I use them to do the fine lines in the armor joints on some of my marines too.

Thin your wash to 50/50 before applying it to the studs. Just dab the brush lightly in one spot where the stud meets the legplate - the liquid will naturally flow around the stud. Use less, you can always give it a second application if it isnt dark enough.

Maybe hit those yellow edges with yellow + white mix.

W&N Series 7 000. They're $10, sable, and as resilient as you could ask for.
>>
>>48166895
Very very carefully. What many people recommend is not using a small detail brush, but a larger brush with a good tip so the paint doesn't dry up immediately when you put it on the eyes, so you don't have to force it. You outline the eyes before and afterwords of course. Then you put the black dot on.

Out of curiosity, what model is that?

I based it roughly off an old heroclix figure he had been using.

Certainly better than the heroclix figure. You may want to go over the freehand more and give the sarong a much higher highlights on the edges. The face could also use some more highlights on the cheeks. After that I would probably recommend using an actual base to make it look nicer.

It's not much yet, but I couldn't sleep last night so I thought I'd make a center piece. It's going to be a necron portal of sorts. I sanded a piece of plastic to frost it up a bit and try to diffuse the light a bit but I may just have to dim them.

I've never made a terrain piece yet, and haven't touch electronics in forever. I'm thinking of having stairs leading up to it and maybe some columns holding the platform up to hide behind. Any recommendations/inspirational art?

That isn't exactly unique to Reaper. There are figures like Abbadon whose hands are notorious for falling off, and I can't cound the amount of times that fiddly bits on my Infinity figures haven't made the trip to the club in one piece. You might want to try pinning the wrist. You can get a pin vice for less than $5 and I am sure that paperclips can be found for free.

Hey WIP.

I have an Imperial Guard Chimera all cleanly basecoated etc. and ready for highlighting/shading.

My issue is that the colour scheme I'm using is red / white, so most of the hull of the Chimera is pristine white. Would it be safe for me to just drown the whole fucking thing in good old Agrax Earthshade to give it a dirtier colour and then highlight up from there?

Sure. We really should have a page on 1d4chan for this, but I've been too lazy to write it. Maybe I'll get around to it. Emperor knows, we have enough Johnny images.

>He's reloading? Or is he talking on the phone?

He's actually reloading. If you look at the model from above, you can see the unexpended bolts in the magazine.

In an old Citadel Miniatures flier - and later ads in White Dwarf Magazine - the first run of Aly Morrison/Citadel beekees were given names matching the cast of the 1960's Batman TV serial starring Adam West. So there was a Brother (Adam) West, Brother (Burt) Ward, Brother (Burgess) Meredith, etc.; and this lad was Brother (Yvonne) Craig.

Later, when these beekees were reproduced in the blue 1990 catalogue, everyone was assigned generic names ("Bolter #10", "Meltagun", "Plasma Gun #2") and part numbers. Brother Craig was noticeably absent, though. If he has a real part number, I couldn't tell you what it might be. I don't have any of the fliers older than that catalogue.

You ever watch Ed, Edd, and Eddy? You know the character Jonny 2x4, who walks around talking to the wooden board, Plank, as if he's having a conversation with it? One clever anon created a meme image after that fashion (pic related is one that actually came later) because it looks like our Johnny is having a conversation with his ammunition in exactly the same way.

Finished this guy the other day. I plan on using him as a barbarian in my Frostgrave warband. It wasn't until I took the pic that I noticed that glaring white spot of unpainted primer near his face. His skin didn't turn out the way I wanted, but for a tabletop quality paintjob, I think I did okay.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I didn't want to make a new thread. I'm planning on offloading a small force of necrons on ebay but I'm not sure what would constitute a fair price. It's not posted yet and I'm not gonna provide a link cause I don't want to come off like I'm advertising.
So /wip/, what do you think would be a fair price for pic related?
>>
>>48171301
Honestly, I might be interested for $40-50. There really isn't that much done to them to justify them as being "Well painted"

Depends on shipping as well.
>>
>>48171301

50% of whatever those units are worth. People can buy them new for 20% off so there's no point in charging anything above 80% MSRP as they would likely prefer new ones over pre-painted and assembled ones.

"But what if the buyer wants them pre built and painted". That's a perk to being a buyer, not a seller. Buyers who want pre-painted shit can take their pick of the litter from used eBay army lots that go for far below what the models are worth. Your bases are also outdated so that's not a point in your favor. The paint job doesn't look thick and you didn't paint over the tubes or build them retardedly so you might be able to charge more than usual for them but who knows.
>>
>>48171142
great I'm perfectly okay with that, since it's Necromunda after all
>>
>>48171301
>>48171350
this. 50-60% of retail is a good guideline. I'd say 60% since these are in good shape and painted fine and might not need to be stripped. just advertise them as "pro painted, incredible expert paint job!" desu
>>
>>48171349
That's about what I was thinking. They're definitely being listed as "tabletop" quality. Shipping would be standard $5-ish shipping.

>>48171350
I'm not trying to get close to MSRP, I'm just offloading them because I never really play with them and it'd be a waste to throw them out.

Start auction at $40, Buy It Now at $70 in case of someone who for some reason needs to have my oldcrons sound fair?
>>
>>48171301
It depends. Online, 60% retail is a pretty good deal, the paint job looks good, but go down to a hobby center (or anywhere 40k people that don't know shit go) and you could get away with selling "expert painted" miniatures at full, maybe more if they don't know stuff, price.
>>
>>48171434

$72 is the MSRP of all those models so you can try $70 if you want but I doubt you're going to get any bites.

If you can, you should put a "Or Best Offer" option and you can see what people offer. Speaking from experience, you will sell much more easily if you set a Buy It Now with or without Or Best Offer. Open bid auctions never sell well unless it's a super large lot and a good deal, or rare models like limited editions or superheavies or in demand shit like marine Rhinos.
>>
>>48171386
>>48171454
>>48171490
Alright, 60% of MSRP makes about $45, seems fair to me as a Buy It Now price. Thanks for the input /wip/. Hopefully my Necrons'll find a new home where they'll actually see some play.
>>
Can anyone point me towards a video or guide for basing that assumes the audience is a complete retard? I've painted a bunch of minis, but never once bothered basing. I always thought it was a waste of time. I'm starting to see the light.
>>
>>48171594

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU4uXWliRTM

This one is retard proof. But if you want a different variety of bases, you can also use the standard "PVA glue and sand" which you will find literally hundreds of guides for on the internet, or if you don't trust yourself with painting glue and sprinkling sand everywhere, or simply want a non-sand texture, substitute Citadel texture paint for Vallejo texture pastes.

Hey /wip/
I superglued a plastic figure together and want to debond it.

I did it because I had read on here that you could debond superglue on plastic minis but while I ordered some superglue debonder it acts as a solvent to the plastic too.

What do I use?

Also I have a lot of flying bases and want to trade the plastic shafts for metal rods for durability and would also like them to be magnetic so I can remove the figures from the bases for easier transport.

Anyone else do this and if so what kind of metal to you use?
>>
>>48172568
Can't really be super helpful, here but I remember somebody showing of a similar idea.
He just used nails for the bases with a flat top and glued magnets into the minis iirc.
Because the nails have a head that might come in handy to keep the minis on there since it maximized the surface area where the magnet connects.

>>48172644

Do you guys use 3rd party bases? It doesn't seem like many offer all the sizes that 40k models actually use. I think it would be cool to base an army all with one base theme. But many base makers seem to be lacking specific sizes like either a 32mm base, or a 50mm base (flesh hound). And let's not even try looking for someone making the 90x52 bloodcrusher base.

If you're using metal tools, use grease from around your nose to lubricate your tool so the clay is less likely to stick.
Also make slighter, slow movements.

Another thing, clay/color shapers (the name varies but they are the exact same thing) are also very useful for smoothing surfaces and making slight creases.

Paint it with Pallid Wych Flesh instead. It's off-white, but will still look very bright compared to most other things, and you can highlight it with pure white. It looks better and more natural.

IMO you are doing it wrong in the sense that you are highlighting the edges, but the crystals are not transfering light.

I do Tau and the bases are in a planet with pure black sand and red crystals, and the way I do it is the same as what I did in this picture. Check the lights. They are done in a simple yellow with some lighter yellow highlight and then there is a dry brushing of yellow all around the area.

I do this even in the models, so models that are near a crystal have red light into transfered into their legs.

>Now how do i paint white? i mean for shading and highlights
Here's a GW guide for painting over black/white primer.

Some cliff notes
>don't use white except for your most extreme highlights. that way you can still highlight and control the color temperature
>depending on what kind of off white you use, you can control color temperature. Mix some light brown in it and you got a warm tone mix blue in it you got a cool shade. Use this depending how the rest of your scheme looks like.
>glazing is an easy way to get more tonal variation in your shades and do smoother highlights, but when using white it can sometimes end up a bit chalky.
>Working with a light primer should be a no brainer.
>>
>>48165873
you're lacking in saturation differences and temprature differences, it all is a warm medium saturation colored mess, try to get some dark/warm bright/cold colors on there.

smaller warbands have smaller warbosses. then a bigger one smashes his head and amagamates his larger force with the defeated warboss' force.
Now the larger warband has a larger warboss. That boss probably even grew a bit.

I use a scalpel (box cutter would work as well), to either make slices, or use the tip to bore a hole for a bullet hole. I do this before any painting.

I won't lie, deliberately damaging your models to create realistic battle damage could fuck up badly. I tried it on a crappy mini first time . Remember less is more. You can always go back and make more latter. Just slice, then drop some dark wash in it.

I want to make a chaplain dreadnought out of the Blood Angels Dreadnought kit that's wielding a Dreadnought sized Crozius Arcanum but I'm stuck on what to actually use for the head of the weapon. I want a look like those with some thing in the middle and the wings on the side but I can't find much that would match well.
Anyone have suggestions?

Cawdor gangers from Necromunda.
>>
>>48178349
kind of a loooong shot, but if you want to ruin one of the servitors that come with grimaldus, one of them is carrying a statue that kind of looks like that.
Might be easier to use the decorations from the tank sprue and sandwich some plastic card in the middle to build the volume up, that should give you something similar. Or you could use the bits from the cities of death buidlings with an aquila head and the front armor from the ravenwing bikes to build something like it.
Then add the spiked rivets around the edges to add some more detail and tie it in with their smaller counterparts.

>>48178693
The old necromunda cawdor gangers. Essentially redemptionists. Worth their weight in gold on ebay these days. Not even nearly as expensive as the arbites though.

You're right. I think the ship decoration would need to be about twice as big to look "heroic" enough.

>My god, thank the johnny, where are you from?(i am from italy)how many do you have?(i want 3-10 depending on price)how much do you want?

I'm from the United States. The only ones I have are the two in the picture. I salvaged them (and a few Wolfbane Commandos) from a box of old miniatures that were destined to be melted down.

Ironically, since the game originated in Europe, I'm surprised you're having trouble finding these. I guess you could counter that you're having trouble finding them at a decent price. I'd sell them to you for $5.00US per model, plus whatever it takes to ship them to Italy.

>>48179685

just keep in mind they will no longer light up once you cover the solar panels ;)
May I suggest "Granny Grating" over that portion, painted before placed on top.
Or, alternatively, remove the panel from the top, keep the wires connected, and add the panel beside it at an angle and on a platform as a functional terrain feature.

No worries. I wish I could help you more in your search. I've considered picking up a few of the old ugly Warzone/Mutant Chronicles figures to add flavour to our games of Siege of the Citadel.

I do know, if you really want the Trenchers with the Charger HMG, that Noble Knight Games has a lot of five of them on eBay right now. They tend to be overpriced, though, and I'm not sure they would be willing to ship to Italy.

I was thinking of having something that I could just lift off when they weren't in use. I'm not planning on using glue. The lids off pringles tins are spot-on size wise.... but they're a little bit flimsy and probably wouldn't take paint too well....
