Basically, in order for the power to work, you either have to be considerably greedy or charitable for decent periods of time (just one act of charity or greed is not enough.) The power also increases in strength the more you exhibit one of these traits.

I think the CYOA would be a lot more fun if, when it comes to knowledge at least, you were building on your prior knowledge, instead of replacing it. This would give you the chance to try and learn new things, instead of having to "re-learn" things you already know.
Like, for example, suppose you already know french, or calculus. This can be hand-waved as something you learned in Middle-school in this "new world", perhaps through advanced placement classes. So your knowledge levels would start where they were previously, and then grow from there.
THough, in that case, I would make the option to give up prior knowledge worth a lot more than +10.
As far as the friends go, suggestion: Require that you choose only one *best* friend, but can choose an additional number of just normal friends; perhaps 3 or 4.
