Today I went to my first session of D&D. It's a freind's birthday and they were interseted in it, so they gathered a party while I sourced PDFs as the sole friend aqquinted with /tg/shit. As someone who's been lurking on /tg/ for a while now I was pretty excited for it. I'll storytime if there's enough interest.

Also, general first /tg/ experience story thread.

Of course we want storytime.

As for my first time playing DnD.

>Playing AD&D, I forget which incarnation, but something old as fuck.
>Rolling up my first ever character, a fighter
>Oh, shit, he only has 2 hp.
>Anyway, we hear about the legendary sword of whatever, and we go down to the dungeon to see if we can find it.
>Climb down the ravine
>Oh, hey, there's a door.
>It's not even locked, it's just stuck from the humidity
>Well, I've got a 17 strength, so force it open.
>That works, yay
>But I have a low dex, and I lose my balance as I shoulder the door open.
>And fall down some more stairs
>And take 1d4 damage from the tumble
>Roll a 3, dead.

We got a backup "totally not his clone" character soon after, and we switched to a houserule that at first level, you roll twice and take your better HP total. And toned down some of the more gratuitious ways to get hurt. It's nice that adventurers are no longer made out of paper mache the way things were back in the day.

>5e just came out
>friend talk me into playing
>use a pre-rolled fighter
>charged with escorting relief supplies to a suffering town
>get ambushed by goblins with crossbows
>try to use a dead horse carcass to make a meat shield
>take 2 arrows before success
>take two daggers to the face
>our dwarf cleric ends up butchering them and taking a prisoner
>violent interrogation ensues
>track goblins back to hideout
>accidentally break a dam to an underground river and flood the lower sections of the cave
>use this to drown some goblins with grapple successes
>impale a goblin with a flaming javelin
>somehow pass a stealth check wearing heavy armor
>rogue nat20 one-shots the boss on his first non critical fail of the game.
>end up drowning the guard detail in the flooded section of the cave
>negotiate a release of a prisoner by instituting a new goblin regime by naming an ambitious but impish goblin the new king
>leave the cave
>realize that we forgot to loot anything in the cave
>face palm
>>
This will probably go into too much detail, so bear with me
>We're playing D&D 4e, homebrewed a little for simplicity
>Only 1 proper character sheet, so we improvise on blank paper for time being
>Party makeup:
>Dragonborn fighter with a sense of adventure
>Halfling rogue with an obsession with thievery
>Elf ranger with little presence outside of combat
>Human cleric (me) with an unofficial leading role
>Campaign starts in tavern
>Nobody knows each other, but the ranger is waiting for someone
>No money or equipment, but rogue is busy pickpocketing everyone
>He tries and fails sneak up to cloaked plot hook in corner
>while playing it off he asks if he can help him
>The cloaked figure drops a note reading "Find beauty. G=100."
>There is a small map on the back
>The fighter notices and offers to accompany him as it seems like an adventure
>I do so at the same time as he might come into danger
>The ranger realises her contact is a no show and decides to tag along
>The party has formed
>The rogue gives us an allowance from what he stole
>He tries to loan us it, but I argue that it's an investment in our aid
>We see the man left leaving hs mosty drained cup
>The rogue looks at it but rules that a cup that small would contain something too strong for him
>The fighter chugs it and is left shitfaced
>We first visit the town smithy and de facto armoury
>We buy some weapons
>The fighter tries to intimidate the dwarf at the counter while buying a mace
>Fails, and is scared off himself
>While I try to buy a quarterstaff the rogue steals the fighter a buckler
>We visit a shop with a mystical sign
>The elf inside is the town sage
>We show her the note, and she shows us the illusrated area on a proper map
>She loans it, and we leave
>We buy torches at the store then leave
Cont.

First time DMing is like the first time you fuck. It's embarassing, awkward, you have no idea what you're doing despite all the time and effort you put into it, you're apologizing a lot, it's over before you know it, and no one's really satisfied at the end.

>We shortcut through a forest road
>I mutter words of warning and walk within sight of the path
>The others share their heads and take the path
>Me and the ranger notice a stopped caravan jutting around the upcoming bend
>We sneak away from path but before we warn the others rocks fly at them
>A band of kobold bandits had ambushed the caravan
Would continue but I need to leave for a short while.

Well all my players were virgins too, so maybe you had someone gently guide into this new and wonderful world
>>
Not my first time ever but the current first time.

>Party meets as a team gathered for a bank heist
>Going over plans for whoever has them
>We end up with a pretty complicated scheme that should work, mainly involving distraction and clever sneaking while posing as a group of sewer maintenance workers
>Everything going fine until a distraction on the manager breaks (someone got in a fight with a customer) and he comes and sees the goblins having found evidence that this is actually a corrupt bank for dirty money and criminals
>Fight ensues with the guards and some customers which the bard only exacerbates by drawing panic and causing a run on the bank by the spectating crowd
>My guy accidentally exits the fight early by falling down the escape hole with a teller hostage and two guards who were trying to stop him
>Find out later most everyone made it out, with some significant gains at that, to which we meet at the safehouse
>We're now looking to find and rescue the wizard before he starts losing fingers

Also for some reason I now have two hired guards from the bank as willing hostages, more interested in our scheme and my character (confusing potential romance?) than their old hired mercenary work of guarding a dirty bank.

Not sure what I should do now, all things considered.

>Two sling users who attacked earlier stand on caravan, two axemen come to attack
>The rogue greviously wounds one with his twin daggers
>The fighter misses the other and smashes a nearby tree
>He is knocked over by a loose branch that fell on him
>I rush to his aid and bludgeon the kobold
>The rogue moves into the fight, takes their sling and attacks the kobold sling users
>They fail to hit with their volleys
>The rogue continues to attack and disarms his target, the fighter continues to be incompetent
>I fire knock over one slinger with a spear of faith and will the fighter to do better
>The rogue dropkicks the dying kobold onto their fallen axe
>The slinger gets back up and attacks, but his sling breaks and smacks the other in the face
>The rogue kills one as we gank the other
>We take some survival equipment from what's left of the caravan as I pray for the caravan
>There was a suspicious candle in the load, but I failed the arcana check so I'm not sure what it is
>We arrive to find a ruined church with a hole in the side
>The church is long abandoned and contains several peasant skeletons
>There is a dead priest who was reading a prayer for warding evil
Cont
>>
>>48128281
>Several religion and history checks later
>The church is an old church of Pelor
>An evil god whom Pelor pissed off once led an orcish warband to destory his holy places
>They sacked this place on their journey to a great cathedral in a Dragonborn stronghold
>We continue a passage at the church rear
>The graveyard at the end is mostly intact
>The largest tomb's enterance slab has a large hole in it left by a kind of pick
Cont
>>
>>48128726
>The rogue provokes the fighter into charging him the bullfights hm into the slab
>I tire of the shenanigans fast and pry open the tomb with my quarterstaff
>The ranger steps in and the floor gives way
>She lands safely and dodges a projectile
>She hears a suprised cry then something retreating as the party climbs down to her
>We are now in a somewhat more extravagent room
>The corpses are fresh and of higher standing
>The knight has his short sword and leather armour stolen as I check the priest
>This one is reading a prayer for luck in battle from a higher quality holy book
>It contains holy rituals that I could use, so I take it with a prayer of my own
>We see a steep tunnel dug down and through one wall
>The rogue halfway falls down and the fighter unsteadily chases after to pick him up
>I cartweel down the slope to catch up as the ranger carefully follows
>I hear a ominous chanting from within
>I understand it to be a ritual of cultists of Asmodeus
>They are summoning something powerful
Is there any interest in this? If so
I'll keep going, but if the thread is dying I'll stop.

Yea, removing the caution and tension of dyeing easily sure makes things more interesting. /sarcasm

I DM for the first time last weekend and was amazing.

I guess in pressure situations you really revert to your "training". All the players were new and interested as fuck in the game. My brain truned a full speed to books, sessions I had as a player, it flowed really well.

And I somehow made a great story out of the D&D starter kit, it involved snake cults eating dragons, politics, murder, and a lot of fucking franken 3.5 rules edition.

It was fucking great and everybody is hype for the second session.
>>
>>48129675
I read it all but its very uninteresting and uneventful

green text is for summing up stories, not telling every single detail
>>
>>48130324
Make encounters more deadly, don't make adventurers flimsier
>>
>Playing human bard
>playing 3.5
>Shit goes down and we're in some underground cavern
>There's a woman with a large rock on her leg
>Rogue rolls to free the girl
>Rolls 2 consecutive 1s while doing so
>Somehow snaps her leg off and then breaks the other one.
>Keep leg hoping to reattach it
>Find a wizard in the cave and ask if he can help
>Apparently the fucker is blind so he cant do shit
>The entire session he only managed to hit us with his spells
>Suddenly giant centipedes
>Oh snap our first battle
>Party wizard casts one spell then spends the rest of the fight dicking around with a crossbow.
>Get to a settlement, it looks like someone lives here
>it's another wizard
>this ones crazy
>I manage to calm him down because bard
>Rogue fires an arrow at him and then he goes apeshit
>Knocks us all out with a single color spray
>He runs away
>See some gross rat people.
>befriend the rat people
>me and ratbros are walking along with the other shit tier murderhobos
>See crazy wizard again
>I'm not dealing with this shit again
>I knock his ass out.
>Party wizard starts walking up to him
>Ohgodno
>he says "nighty night sunshine."
>Shoots him point blank range with crossbow and splatters his brains across the ground
>Ratbros just saw us murder a seemingly helpless man
>Try to explain the situation and that the wizard has an extreme case of the 'Tism.
>They get a Nat 20 against my persuasion check.
>The session ended with the rat people not letting us in their town which was the only was forward
Overall great first impression
