Only somewhat related, Is only the first company captain a terminator for the most part? Do other captains in most chapters tend to use terminator armor?

Cause I kinda feel like it's no, and that's kinda why I have no interest in the start collecting marines box. I wouldn't know what to do with him either.

What's yer chapter?

Chapter Masters and 1st Company are the only ones who have been shown to use terminator suits. I'm sure all captains are qualified to use one though.

Camoflauge for whatever world they land on (so the color of your terrain).

If we take DoW 2 as an example I think that if the marines are qualified that they can break out the armor if they need to.
>>
>>48102289
Some of the rarer chapters may use terminator captains in other companies due to their nature. For example Carcharodons who the narrator says may have scouts and terminator command squads in every company so each ship/company can act individually in case the mother fleet isn't around to help it out

about how many points is the scion start collecting box? I am thinking of putting together an army with the following setup

>max out the command squad with the medic guy and four volley guns or plasma guns, put them in cover with the do-nothing commissar and have them blast away at stuff while barking orders
>minimum strength troop squad with 2 special weapons as an absolute suicide squad, because the formation lets them respawn
>teleport homer on the truck
>have two or three of these
>and an inquisitor and friends for psychic support and maybe more transports, maybe more fire support with servitors and monkeys

How are IG Mortar teams? I just got the Start Collecting box, and I either want to make the Heavy Weapons team into an Autocannon team or a Mortar team. Both look cool to me, so I wanted a second opinion.
>>
>>48103954
mortars are bad
autocannons are good
>>
>>48103954
don't take Heavy Bolters, they cost as much as Autocannons but can't threaten nearly as much. The one thing they have over the Autocannon is 1 more shot, but you lose so much more for the same point cost. Mortars are just outclassed by Wyverns for the same job of horde removal.
>>
>>48103983
>mortars are bad

I'll show you! I'll show all of you!

>makes 100 small blast template list
>>
>>48103954
Real talk, autocannons are probably the superior tactical choice, but mortars are amazing.

1. Cheap as hell
2. Abuse the shit out of barrage to hammer in an unreasonable amount of saves on top of the enemy's hq's and warlords to snipe them out. They will not enjoy this and it can be done in the safety of behind line of sight breaking terrain.

How many points are the Start collecting army? My friend wants to do a small skirmish thing with his Start Collecting army but I dont have a Start Collecting so I want to make sure the points are equal.
>>
>>48104661
it varies depending on the faction and which optional upgrades you select, but most are around 400 points

the cadian box is a lot fewer points than the others
>>
>>48104699
Ah ok, thank you.
>>
>>48104382
Wyverns do the same job but better in every possible way: Damage, range and accuracy all better than mortar teams. Hell even the price per shot is better on the Wyvern. There is not a single reason to take a mortar squad over a squadron of Wyverns. Take a full squadron of 3 and give cast misfortune on whatever you want to die. Anything from ork super-mobs to Terminators will evaporate.
>>
>>48104741
examples:

>Skiitari
data priest duder... I forget

100+ pts for 10 rangers, no other upgrades... usually people run them with special weapons which add a lot of points

90+ for a naked dunecrawler... upgrades can add up quick

so about 350 depending on upgrades, but the units in the box are pretty good so they can get by with a little less

>Chaos Space Marines
105+ points - chaos lord with terminator armor. Extra upgrades can cost even more points, especially weapon options

140+ points - 10 chaos space marines with no special weapons or upgrades. with special weapons and upgrades these guys can be as many as 250 points, but that is seldom worth it

100+ points for the helbrute. Giving him different guns can drive up the points.

You could make the CSM box be maybe 550 points by purchasing EVERY upgrade, but that'd be a very poor 550 point army as CSM upgrades are very inefficient. Better to keep them around 350-400 and only purchase the most impactful upgrades.

I don't know the other boxes as well and I'm tired, but yeah
>>
>>48104817
>There is not a single reason to take a mortar squad over a squadron of Wyverns.

Wanting to spend all your Heavy Support slots on Leman Russes?
>>
>>48104834
That is what Command tanks are for. And if you're that desperate for tanks you can take the formation from Cadia for LODESATANKS
>>
>>48104817
But what if you also want your infantry to shoot barrage weapons so that your whole army including the wyverns shoot barrage weapons so everyone can shoot barrage weapons because you're a nutcase?
>>
>>48104856
It isn't necessarily wanting dozens of tanks, but wanting to field a few broken down into individual squadrons of one so you can spread their fire around better. I'm not disagreeing that Wyverns outclass mortar teams in every single way, but mortars do have a very niche role in that they let you get some barrage weapons into the list if your HS slots are doing other things.
>>
>>48104867

What should I build from my Imperial guard heavy support squad in my renegades and heretic army? I don't really have any heavy support besides a Wyvern and a single mistake launcher that I got from a friend. But they have such low BS that lascannons doesn't seem worth it. Instead I'm opting for mortars, what do you guys think I should them as?
>>
>>48105081
Mistake = missile

I suck at typing today it seems.
>>
>>48105081
You can buy +1BS. its called militia training.
BUT heavy weapon teams are...strange in R&H
If you take only HWT its a heavy support slot, which is already bad. The teams are very vulnerable, which is worse.
So you either take some autocannons in a large infantry squad for 'ablative' wounds (They are 3pts/model!) or you can try the elite choice for small 5guy teams with BS4 who do not cost much despite having only a single heavy weapon. Use the latter for higher value shots (lascannons, missile launchers). Remember you can fire the HWT out of chimeras making it sweet cheap dakka-transports.
>>
>>48105081
A full squad of missles and autocannons.
>>
>>48105081
Milita Training with autocannons and Tzeentch devotion is not-bad, certainly the best they have available. It becomes a decent unit that can do emergency anti-air when it needs to

Dark angels rule. Plus they have a sweet Viking vs knights thing going on.
>>
>>48105230
Black Templars are marines, so they're fine. They miss out psyker toys in exchange for special melee squads as troops with the option of a heavy support vehicle as a dedicated transports, extra meat shields in said squads, and they're better at running at things. Their special characters are alright too. They're also better at shrugging off psyker's attacks but most people just buff their own units so it doesn't come up a lot. Unless you're going for a more choppy marine build you're probably better off playing other chapter tactics but even if you just play like vanilla without psykers you won't really be hurting yourself given that marines are good overall.

Other than that you can look into sisters of battle, certain inquisitor builds could probably do it, imperial knights, and grey knights. Tertiary dark angels because they have some other fluff stuff going on that they're more focused on.

Completely brutalised. I don't see any sort of coherent army there, it's just a scattering of random models. At the very least, drop the Dark Eldar detachment. Stacking the Armour of Misery and Mask of Secrets is a fun gimmick in larger games where you've got points to kill, but in smaller lists you need to focus on the essentials.

>Have they said anything about actually working on balance?

They've said that they officially don't care about rules and are really only interested in producing models. The game is just a vehicle to sell more toys. They aren't interested in sinking the time and resources into ensuring it's balanced.

They 'fixed' the issue that if a vehicle jinks, the passengers aren't forced to take snap shots. Being able to do accurate drive-by shootings out the back of their transports was pretty much the only thing Dark Eldar had left that made them playable.

These FAQ's do nothing but widen the already harsh gap between the most and least powerful Codexes in the game. They're yet more proof that GW doesn't care about the game it's making, and will continue to shit out half-baked rules suppliments rather than even try to enforce some kind of balance.

Oh, and by the way? The FAQ's also decided that Tyranids and Genestealer Cults were allies of convenience rather than battle brothers. Because I guess being able to use Shrouding or Invisibility on allied close combat units is crushingly broken in the era of Scatbike span and Tau Gundamwings.

I had a quick think about this today:

remove alot of cover ignoring mechanics and increase the benefits of cover so that simply having a small number of very powerful units is extremely inefficient at displacing basic/smaller units that can benefit from the cover

this would probably require a huge nerf to flamers in either the abundance or cost of them (crisis suits and wraithguard being the main offenders i can think of)

>>
>>48108927
each codex has set units that have maybe 1 special rule each however special characters can be added to squads to boost them and give additional rules. GW could sell these special characters and a real competitive meta could be created.

Space marine squad x5-10 dudes
per 5 special weapon is allowed
ATSKNF

Standard sgt improves LD and allows reroll of 1 test per turn

Super duper sgt mcmarine gives squad split fire and a makes special weapons twinlinked

Apoth sgt turns one marine into a medic, grant fnp and the sgt gets to restore a marine per turn or something.

These are shite rules and I've not spent much time thinking about them but ya get the gist.
>>
>>48109196
I keep hearing Skitarii is pretty fun to play, if that interests you. They should be getting some new stuff in the next IA.

Nurgle marines aren't that great because they are still just CSM, and CSM are in a bad place right now. If you like Death Guard and have a 30k community near you, you could consider making a Horus Heresy army. Rumor is we might be getting plastic Mk III in a BaC style game in a few months, which would be pretty good for a XIVth legion force.

It looks utterly stupid and ill-fitting for imperial units to wear scavenged scrap armour.

Thankfully i play Traitor Guard, so it was perfect for my dark needs...
>>
>>48109537
If their armour was made of scrap metal and could be purchased as an upgrade. But it's a stock unit item. They're being issued them. What sort of factory is making armour for ogryns and goes "you know what, lets go over to that completely different factory and take some of the tracks meant for tanks and put it here on the armour, because of reasons." Just attack a series of plates together. Done. You're wasting resources using tracks as dedicated armour when you can use far better and cheaper alternatives.

Yeah, I get it that they're going for the WW2 look of tanks having extra lengths of tracks mounted on them as improvised armour, but a) it made sense for tanks to have tracks on them because they'd carry spare tracks on them anyway to fix broken tracks; secondly, it was an improvised thing while the ogryn armour had a clear slot on it where the tracks are mounted, so it's not like that was done in the field in addition to the plate itself; and 3) Nork has a proper set of plates, instead of tracks, so it's clear they can make a series of plates.
>>
>>48109552
It's a dumb detail when the new ogryns have custom built carapace, 2 custom built shields, custom built power mauls, custom built grenade launchers, custom built gas masks and custom built commissar styled vox casters. To then turn around and add that saying "yeah the imperium don't care about these lads too much so they're going cheap on the armour" just doesn't make sense, and not in the usual imperial way.
>>
>>48109626
>>48109634
The tank tracks give off a humorous vibe, and who knows maybe it's actually
cheaper for the imperium to just throw spare tracks they have lying around on
abhumans instead of wasting precious material instead.

So I played two games and tabled both opponents - Tau and AdMech.
Against the Tau my star (using the WWP) came in, shrieked a squad of suits to nothing, feared a pathfinder squad off the board with the jester, and the farseer shrieked another squad of suits. I tabled him the next turn with a second round of shrieks. (Got off 2 shrieks + Invisibility on turn 2)

Against the cult mech, my stuff didnt come in until t4, but the farseer had already shrieked off 2 units of those lads on wheels, leaving 3 squads. Tabled him turn 4.

I think anyone with a knight or heavy tanks would batter me, but the list seemed to hold up fine.

Had my first game of 40k today! Well, first in 15 years. Was pretty damn fun, I've been working on my Eldar for 5 months now and it was damn satisfying seeing them on the field. I went up against Black Templars, 525 pts (we upped it a little because he wanted some combi-meltas). I won, but it was a pretty close thing: I had one vyper with 1HP left, 3 Scorps and one Dire Avenger left when I tabled him.

The Emperors Champion is a badass, he almost single-handedly chewed through my guardian squad, my Farseer and my Dire Avengers. Had to rend him with Shuricannons to kill him. All in all, was great fun, can't wait to play again.

Can somebody explain what the difference between a Wash and an Ink is?

I know a wash is lightweight and fills in the crevices with darker color, but that seems like what an Ink would do too?
>>
>>48109504
Interesting, varied codexes are for protagonist armies, anon. If you play an NPC race you take whatever scraps GW deigns to throw your way.
>>
>>48110032
Nice me lad. The next thing you have to do is purchase a unit of windriders with scatter lasers and a squad of Warp Spider Aspect Warriors! You and your friend will continue to have fun games.

This is assuming you already have a Wraithknight you just didn't field yet, correct?
>>
>>48110243
Inks have a stronger pigment, behave a little different off the brush and GENERALLY are glossier.

It's almost a heavier wash. Only way to really see the difference is to try though.
>>
Is the only way to get terminators "cheaply" in one of those big detachment things (like Fist of Medusa Strike Force) from Angels of Death really the 1st Company Task Force?
Why isn't there a choice to take a terminator squad in the strike force command? GW even sells a box called Terminator Command with 5 termies and a termi cap.
>>
>>48110243
"wash" "ink" "shade" are all similar

GW used to produce some paints they called "inks". They were thin paints with a VERY strong color and a glossy finish. In order to use them well they pretty much HAD to be thinned with water, as they were far too strong otherwise.

GW now produces "shade" paints, which can be thinned for a weaker color, but have a matte finish and are perfectly usable as-is.

"Washes" refer to something painters have been doing for ages, where a paint is thinned down to where it flows into the crevices. Usually you add some medium or other stuff, since otherwise when the paint dries it can seep back out of the crevices or leave nasty rings

most people play fast and loose with the terminology, so don't sweat it.
>>
>>48110266
I'm gonna assume you meant meme? Well, I do play Eldar, so I guess you're partly right? Thing is, I went Eldar because I love the fluff, especially the Wraith stuff: using your own dead people to power implacable looming war machines? Sign me up!

But then I found out Eldar are OP. So, I'm trying to downplay that as much as possible, because I don't want to shit up the group. No WG until 1000pts meta, no Spiders or Scatterbikes. Bought the Start Collecting box because I wanted a FP anyway and I can always build the bikes with Shuricannons.

Believe it or not, some Eldar players just like the army, and aren't interested in WAAC. It's worth thinking about.

Actively not buying the best I could, or any FW at all Although the Wraithseer is really fucking sexy, how bad is he rules-wise?. I actually want to ally my Eldar with some Orks, my fluff is that my Farseer keeps tempting the Warboos with some nice flashy dakka into fighting their battles, but always finds some excuse to say 'oh, damn, maybe next time'. Of course, sometimes this doesn't work, and the Warboss decides to krump da panzees an' nick their flashy bits regardless.

Not overpowered in the slightest. He's a Wraithlord with an extra wound, a 5+ invulnerable save, and some okayish psychic powers. If you give him a D-cannon on his shoulder mount he costs almost twice as much as a regular Wraithlord.

The interesting thing is that as both a Monstrous Creature and Independent Character, you can attach him to a unit, though if you do, no other IC's can join it. I quite like running mine with a squad of Wraithblades down the table as a slow CC wrecking-ball.

I can't make you see reason, so if we ever met and you refused to play, that would be that.

>Instead of having that attitude, you could play a toned down list that people wouldnt balk at.
Unless you field nothing but Kroot people complain.
>>

Yep. Honestly, regular Wraithguard aren't even all that crushingly powerful so long as you don't give them D-Scythes. They're still slow, they still only have one shot each, and they're still limited to a 12" range. In practice they're not all that different to Fire Dragons that trade speed for toughness.
>>
>>48110687
Any Wraithguard or Wraithblade unit is okay to run at any points level you fedora tipping redditfaggot hyper-autist.

You're not the first Eldar faggot to say "I'm just going to keep it fluffy and not OP" you still have the best codex in the game and it isn't even close.

>they can just borrow a few track pieces it's not like they need them shipped out special

Except that the equipment they're given is standard issue for those unit types. And the armour has a specific made slot to put the track into.

Also, giving out the Emperor's tracks to a bunch of mutants from a completely different regiment? Are you just begging to be shot? Try telling the commander you can't fix any of your tanks because all the spare track pieces are now being worn by a bunch of potatoes.

Hating Tau players regardless of army, attitude, or anything else is a popular meme.

I play Tau, and I bring whatever models I want to bring. If someone thinks my army is too strong, I ask him to design a scenario or something else narrative (or to design one with him). If he declines and/or bitches the entire game, I don't play against him a second time.

For every WAACfag who wants nothing but to win games, there's a whiner that just wants to complain. Obsession with balance cuts both ways.

The hydra is open topped so that way the guardsmen manning the gun can have a better view of the sky. Also, armor is protecting whats important. Not the guardsmen

Anyone have a link to the story where an Imperial commander is confused about marine chapter names - are those Emperor's Sons friends? What about Blood Angels?

>anyway and I can always build the bikes with Shuricannons.
shuricannons are OP too.
In the older dexes it was one shuricannon for 3 bikes, the others had TL-Catapults. Something like this is okay, I think.

Who's going to punish them? The TANK COMMISSARS? HAHAHAHA didn't think so! This is why tank driver is the best job in the guard.
>>
>>48110834
So your attitude is 'This army is Op, therefore I have a get out of jail free card for losing so I don't care what they bring because I'll just bitch and moan about poor balance'? Seems pretty defeatist. Like I said, I'm not playing to win, I'm playing for fun, and as a newbie I thought I'd ask around for the most hated options to avoid. Excuse the fuck out of me for trying to be a good sport.

GW has yet to make a plane that isn't ugly.

Also, my army has only one vehicle chassis and GW ignores my tanklust to instead make giant robots I don't want. I know your pain well.

>a better view of the sky

By plonking a great big metal sheet in front of him, forcing him to just stare at a little monitor in front of him.

>armor is protecting whats important

Yet they've left the gun mounting, targeting equipment, etc. completely exposed. from all directions than directly in front of it.

27 points for a MEQ with average range? I know I'm new, but it doesn't seem that bad. I thought the reason Scatbikes were OP is the range, being able to dakka squads without them shooting back? If I'm wrong please elaborate, last thing I want to do is shit up a newly-blossoming meta.

Wouldn't it fall to the admech nearby? Seems pretty heretical but desperate times call for desperate measures

Keep in mind eldar jetbikes can move 12", then either boost 36" or JSJ 2d6"

they're maximum stupid no matter what guns they have because they can cross a table instantly

they're an unbalanceable unit

Yet?

Or how about just your tank mates, tank commander, any CO, support staff, etc. It was not your tack to give away.

Don't know much about Eldar, but moving twelve billion miles an hour and being relentless KIND OF Sets them apart from MEQs don't you think?

I think the DE flyers are quite nice. Also the Valkyrie.

They can boost 36''? The fuck? Yeah, that's pretty silly. Maybe houserule it so they can't boost, and only JSJ 1D6''?

No, it's an old Vanquisher cannon design.

No, I don't know why it has an angly bit at the end, it just does.

It's in the BRB. Eldar Jetbike is a unit type for some reason.

Anyone know any cool terrain pieces made from sprue? I have lots of empty sprue and it seems like a shame to waste it all.

Conscripts are supposed to be the same model doofus. You distinguish them by the white stripe on their helmet. This is much easier than giving them their own fucking kit.
