Remember when stuff like this was totally acceptable in (A)D&D? Weird how sexy stuff was still a-ok in the cleaned-up 2nd edition days, but now that we have demons and other "controversial" stuff back, sexy is out.
>>
>>48087254
It actually has more to do with the time periods in question, the 80's and 90's.
Visual aesthetics were different back then.
>>
>>48087254

Remember when the audience was about 1/10th or less of its current size and revenue generation so now one gave a shit about the standards of a cottage industry and it's potential future revenue?

Me too!
>>
To be fair, everyone was naked in Dark Sun.
>>
>>48087628

Dude, roleplaying games sold insanely well in the seventies and eighties compared to now. Then they got their feet cut out by the rise of vidya.

So it's more like "remember when the audience was about ten times what it is now"
>>

>>
Why can't a lady adventurer wear a nice metal bikini without being bullied these days, /tg/? What happened to our nice, casual, fun-filled RPG's?
>>
>>48087659
This is not precisely accurate.
They sold about as well as they do now, perhaps just slightly worse.
But just like how our parents could pay for an entire collage degree with one part-time job and conversely we have to go way into fucking debt to do the same and many other financial woes, money went a LOT farther back in the 1980's then it did now so even though sales were perhaps marginally higher at best D&D was actually making more money for it's developers.
Even accounting for inflation for price, the rising costs of developing print media and the costs of distribution of the books mean that basically even successful RPG's even if they sell the exact same amount that D&D did during it's height kind of often manage to break even at best.

That would be why many RPG books you see these days are made El Cheapo, to actually turn some kind of marginal profit.
>>
>>48087720

A better time in most senses.
>>
>>48087744
Because customers now aday see that such things mostly sugar coates bad mechanics or bad systems.
>>
>>48087889

Today bad systems are sugarcoated in shiny photoshop art and hardcover books with high production values instead.
>>
I thought it was more of a problem that RPGs still had too many pointless slutty female pictures.

You'll like it a lot less once you've been marching, climbing, and fighting in it for a few hours when the sweat makes it catch and chafe your skin bloody.
And even less the next day when it tears the scabs open again and rubs them back into the wounds.
And still less the days after that as your skin turns into a gel-like mass of blood and scabs mashed into paste and oozing puss as infection sets in.

The rule is hard and fast: absolutely no bare metal against the skin, ever.

Far too many people that play are waac faggots that only create warriors or edgy killers and talk about their new abilities or special rules. Their roleplaying is limited to shouting some warcrime while crying ERP if you're a female character or try to play as a charming minstrel. RPG's are only violence escapism for them.

Healthy at Any Size originally meant something completely different. It originally meant "If you eat right, get enough exercise, and don't have any health issues then it's OK that you don't look like a fitness model". Which is actually good, most people are not going to look like fitness models even if they are in great physical condition. It isn't supposed to mean "I can be as fat as I want and anyone who says otherwise is obviously fatphobic".

well it acknowledges that feminism isn't a single monolithic entity, so yes.
Even now there are sex positive feminists, and other breakdowns.
While there are feminists who are stupid and yell at stupid shit, saying they are all the same is like saying all animal rights activists are PETA.
It's just that feminism doesn't have one group the crazy naturally gravitates to.

>>
>>48093254
This sort of self policing isn't actually a thing that can happen if there isn't as single organization.

You can call them out on being stupid, and condemn them, but they'll ignore you.

>The nature of any movement is dictated by its most influential movers and shakers
many movements are too disperesed to have single movers, and shakers are just those who shake things up and can't be controlled by disapproval.

The crazies make more noise. Going back to the example. How often do you hear about PETA saying something crazy? How often about the SPCA being reasonable?

And that's a very centralized movement. Where feminism is an extremely de-centralized movement.

>The crazies make more noise. Going back to the example. How often do you hear about PETA saying something crazy? How often about the SPCA being reasonable?

How often do PETA advocates control college campus?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfzUG70nN6k

How often do PETA advocates dictate national policy?

http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2013/05/10031/

I am wholly ignorant on the matter of PETA and I am not about to go further into them, but pretending that the insanity that is feminism is some innocent cultural quirk whose crazed advocates don't hold significant social power is the height of stupidity.

>many movements are too dispersed to have single movers, and shakers are just those who shake things up and can't be controlled by disapproval

A lack of willingness to self police your movement is functionally identical to supporting the whims of your most extreme members. You can claim that you just "can't do anything," but that hardly stops Christians from condemning the West Boro Baptist church.

I can name precisely one significant feminist author I would ever consider sane: Christina Hoff Summers, but she is not the type of person who influences laws across the nation. She is not the one who shuts down public discourse on mens issues. She is not the one who has caused "rape" on college campuses to extend its meaning to "sex I later decided I didn't want." She does not drive policy, but at the very least, she speaks out against the madness. She is not the face of the movement.

The ones that drive policy are the ones that matter. Crazies drive policy and spread lies, and your allegedly "sane" feminists are the ones who silently allow them to go unopposed.
>>
>>48093254

It's uncomfortable to wear in every circumstance and arguably harmful in most.
Metal and bikinis do not go together.

Yes.
It's actually a scene depicting a sword and sorcery scenario with a male warrior wearing armor.
The other image was of an inventor from greek myth flying with wings made from feathers secured with wax.

Half naked people going on dungeon crawls and adventures through the wilderness is rad as fuck

You can't just throw it into any setting but if you've got one that plays kinda loose with realism as it is I'd say go for it.

That's how I've always seen it. I wouldn't even attempt to bring it up in a Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings setting but something like Conan sure why not.

The way I like to do it when (that's more of an if) I use skimpy armor is doing it the way Howard did it in his pulp fantasy. Many other authors used this method as well, and it's a shame it's been mostly forgotten:

The character starts out in their story or campaign sensibly dressed or armored. They don't dress any different from anyone else in their setting. Then through a series of mishaps they lose their clothes/armor in the adventure and are forced to adopt an exotic, skimpy outfit, either because nothing else is available, because they want to blend in with some weird exotic culture or because the new outfit is magical or vaulable. Basically the archetypal story for it is Red Nails, where both Conan and Valeria start the story normally dressed and end up half naked. It adds a bit of a twist and is much more interesting than "everyone goes around half-nude by default" to me. You get to have the character react to it, either with dislike or like. You can even get some comedy out of it.

No, I don't remember either. The moral outrages and panics came from different sources in the 80s and 90s, usually from parents and concerned religious groups (and sometimes opportunistic lawyers), but they were still there. Hey /tg/. Weird challenge for you.

Yeah. We lost that element when tabletop was colonized by a plethora of bored LA majors and failed Green Party activists who more often than not don't even play the games they're constantly complaining about. Most of the neckbeard old guard "reinvented" themselves as white knights in a desperate attempt to get laid, and as a result the hobby is now a stiffled mess where everything written in a sourcebook is ruthlessly scrutinized by some chump with a gender studies degree. To a lesser extent this can be observed in fantasy and science fiction literature as well, with this cultural trend expanding into horror and even adventure fiction.

Resulting in scared authors forced to play to the whims of the "socially conscious" crowd or face a PR nightmare. Why do these bored "SJWs" do it? Well some would say they're brainwashed but I have another theory. When I was a kid and frequented fanfiction.net, I couldn't write worth a damn so I would "suggest" to the authors in the comment section what to write, and would frequently get upset when they ignored my shitty ideas. What we're looking at is a adult variation of that behavior, except it's not shitty horrible fanfics they're ruining but actual fiction.

Anyway in my settings, the women are all attractive and busty. I like my women attractive and nice, instead of purple haired quarter pounders pissed off men find them abhorrent. Or the equally abhorrent mentally ill people who WANT to be women.

I mean I like cheese and 80's art, but the moment a piece of art crosses a temperature threshold my first thought is 'damn this looks chilly.' Saying nothing of the other elements. Sure no clothes in the desert sounds good until a strong gust or a misplaced step will fill your loincloth with sand, where a decent light skirt or trousers would help.

Nah, it's more like the chest is just a big target, and a proper set of chest protection will enable proper use of bow equipment, which is arguably the most important piece of equipment if your fighting a bunch of dudes. >>
>>48117237
I think this is part of it, too. There's a much bigger move towards realism in fantasy as of late, away from pulp, so people are more likely to complain about "that looks cold" or "his stomach being exposed defeats the whole purpose of armor" when originally it was just supposed to look nice.

As an example, you see lots of art like this in more weeby games, which I'd argue isn't actually because they're all perverts, and at least partially because anime never really left pulp. Exalted and such are largely about style as much as substance.

Yes, but she doesn't have a man face like most of GW's female minis. Also, there is nothing wrong with thick thighs when you're a life godess.

People are jaded on a large level today. Many people are disapointed by the world after being fed too many romantic fantasies in their youth. Many are increasingly anti-establishment that bullshits a lot. I know that every time there's an election year, I wish that I could just leave my country to avoid the torrents of bullshit being spewed out by the eatablisment and I'm not fiercly anti-establishment.

It's enough to make anyone jaded given time.

But doesn't it warm your heart this Fourth of July that both the presumptive candidates for our highest office are under criminal investigation?

Well the issue is you can do realistic with cheese, you just need to do it properly and not do cheese for the sake of cheese. Spartans had everyone running military drills and sports practice ass naked, Fringe Kimba Congolese Tribesmen followed stringent beliefs that the body had a separate spirit and needed to be maintained vigorously, while many Celtic tribes considered clothes to be a sign of cravenness in battle and were anal as shit about caring for mustaches and hair.

It can be done, but it can't just be cheese for the sake of cheese.

That's all well and good until the brave symbol is defeated by an asshole with some caltrops.

Well remember that David as a statue is meant to be imposing from the ground level, but when you look at his face you realize he's nervous as shit that he's going up against Goliath, who can literally pick him up and toss him like a hammer.

Maybe like fashion, tastes change over time and it has less to do with being jaded or political correctness.

I don't know about that. I'm Swedish and I mostly despise all politicians I see because they are professional bullshitters. I don't think that I would enjoy any elction year no matter what country I would be from.

In mainstream culture edgy demons and emo shit is in and anything remotely sexist is out. Does this really surprise you OP?

That's the thing, though. Why precisely does it matter that the visual appearance is unrealistic if its purpose is to present a person a certain way visually? Honestly, explanations like "she wears less armor so she can move faster" are silly not just because they're ludicrous, but because they're an apology for something that never needed explanation in the first place.

I disagree, a visual style needs background to it, iron age, bronze age, far future. Visual style and background are linked. What we might consider 'unrealistic' be it nude warriors or a society that obsessively peruses physical perfection can be made perfectly justifiable in the setting it exists in, allowing an artist or writer to present anything, but it requires a setting for it to be born from. This doesn't just apply to cheese but other things that are often less looked at, weaponry, trade, traditions, culture. You can make anything work, as long as you can convince the reader, player, whatever may have you to suspend their disbelief.
