It is 307 years since the Battle of Poltava, a decisive victory of Peter I of Russia (also known as Peter the Great) over the Swedish forces under Field Marshal Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld, during the Great Northern War. It is widely believed to have been the beginning of Sweden's decline as a Great Power, as the Tsardom of Russia took its place as the leading nation of north-eastern Europe. The battle also bears major importance in Ukrainian national history, as Hetman Ivan Mazepa sided with the Swedes, seeking to create an uprising in Ukraine against the tsardom.

In 1708, King Charles XII of Sweden had invaded Russia with the goal of bringing the Great Northern War to an end. Turned away at Smolensk, he moved into the Ukraine for the winter. As his troops endured the frigid weather, Charles sought allies for his cause. While he had previously received a commitment from Ivan Mazepa's Hetman Cossacks, the only additional forces who were willing to join him were the Zaporozhian Cossacks of Otaman Kost Hordiienko. Charles' position was further weakened by the need to leave an army corps in Poland to aid King Stanislaus I Leszczyñski.

As the campaigning season approached, Charles' generals advised him to fall back to Volhynia as the Russians were beginning to surround their position. Unwilling to retreat, Charles planned an ambitious campaign to capture Moscow by crossing the Vorskla River and moving via Kharkov and Kursk. Advancing with 24,000 men, but only 4 guns, Charles first invested the city of Poltava along the banks of the Vorskla. Defended by 6,900 Russian and Ukrainian troops, Poltava held out against Charles' attack, while waiting for Tsar Peter the Great to arrive with reinforcements.

Marching south with 42,500 men and 102 guns, Peter sought to relieve the city and inflict a damaging blow on Charles.

On June 26th, Charles was informed that 40,000 Kalmyks were marching to reinforce Peter. Rather than retreat, and despite being outnumbered, the king elected to strike at the Russian camp the next morning. Around 5:00 AM on July 8, the Swedish infantry advanced towards the Russian camp. Its attack was met by the Russian cavalry which forced them to retreat. As the infantry withdrew, the Swedish cavalry counterattacked, driving back the Russians. Their advance was halted by heavy fire and they fell back. Rehnskiöld again sent the infantry forward and they succeeded in taking two Russian redoubts.

Despite this foothold, the Swedes were not able to hold them. As they attempted to bypass the Russian defenses, Prince Aleksandr Menshikov's forces nearly encircled them and inflicted massive casualties. Fleeing back, the Swedes took refuge in the Budyshcha Forest where Charles rallied them. Around 9:00 AM, both sides advanced into the open. Charging forward, the Swedish ranks were pounded by the Russian guns. Striking the Russian lines, they nearly broke through. As the Swedes battled, the Russian right swung around to flank them. According to Charles and other reports from other Swede officers, the weather at that time was already very hot and humid with the sun obscured by smoke from the Russian cannon in the fort.

Under extreme pressure, the Swedish infantry broke and began fleeing the field. The cavalry advanced to cover their withdrawal, but was met with heavy fire. From his stretcher at the rear, Charles ordered the army to begin retreating. Small groups of soldiers managed to break through and escape to the south through the Budyschenski wood, while many of the rest were overwhelmed, ridden down, or captured.

The Battle of Poltava was a disaster for Sweden and a turning point in the Great Northern War. Swedish casualties numbered 6,900 dead and wounded, as well as 2,800 taken prisoner. Among those captured was Field Marshal Rehnskiöld. Russian losses were 1,350 killed and 3,300 wounded. Retreating from the field, the Swedes moved along the Vorskla towards its confluence with the Dnieper. Lacking enought boats to cross the river, Charles and Ivan Mazepa crossed with a bodyguard of 1,000-3,000 men. Riding west, Charles found sanctuary with the Ottomans in Bendery, Moldavia. He remained in exile for five years before returning to Sweden. Along the Dnieper, Lewenhaupt was elected to surrender the remnants of the Swedish army (12,000 men) to Menshikov on July 11.

This is a colorful, sprawling clash from a relatively obscure conflict that is a must-fight for fans of pike and shot, coming as it does right at the end of that era. It exemplifies a lot of the qualities (especially maneuver) of that period while having a distinctly Baltic flavour that sets it apart from other contemporary European battles.

It is 40 years since the end of the Luanda Trial, which is considered the final chapter in the "golden age" (if you could call it that) of Cold War mercenarism in Africa. The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) prosecuted thirteen foreign mercenaries who had served its defeated rival, the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA). Nine of them (mainly Brits and Americans but also a South African) received prison terms of 16-30 years, while four men were sentenced to death. They were:

Costas Georgiou (aka "Colonel Tony Callan"), 25 (Cyprus/UK)
Andrew Gordon McKenzie, 25 (UK)
Derek John Barker, 35 (UK)
Daniel Francis Gearhart, 34 (USA)

Now Callan was a murdering psychopath, who lived and died by the sword. But the other three men were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Gearhart had only been in-country a week; a Vietnam veteran drowning in debt, he had never so much as fired a shot. The fact that he had advertised in 'Soldier Of Fortune' magazine was held to aggravate the charges against him, and in vain did the father of four insist that being tried for his life was enough to scare him straight out of the business.

British Prime Minister James Callaghan sent a cable to Angolan President Agostinho Neto requesting mercy for the men. Nevertheless, the four condemned were executed by MPLA military police on July 10, 1976. McKenzie, who had been seriously wounded in the leg and used a wheelchair, stood up to face the firing squad. All the remaining prisoners were eventually released by 1984.

There's no real need to namefag here unless you've got something to contribute at that particular point in time, and most of our posters understand that.

As for comfiness, it helps that we don't have factional arguments as much as most threads, and generally when we're talking about Fiat we're talking sexy Italian planes and not "muh snowflakes have it the worst."
Usually the worst we get is the occasional shitposter, either about "you play bad guys, you endorse their beliefs" or someone trying hard to start a scales war.

I could bet the british and italians did that some decades before already.

In a thread a while back, someone mentioned terrible 90s era looking UK-only websites as being part of the historical wargaming experience. But don't forget about the atrocious example pictures. Quite right anon. While British use of chemical agents in Mesopotamia in 1920 is not independently verified (but still quite probable), the French and Spanish definitely used it in the Rif in 1926, and as you mention the Italians would employ it during their invasion of Ethiopia. I didn't think much of it when writing the timeline up, but I should have dropped that "for the first time in military history" bit. At least we can correct the error civilly and in detail!

in Ostfront we place a few playing cards in no mans land, face down. If a unit moves over them, that player can pick up the card.

Each card has a different effect, form a free air strike, to a camouflaged tank appearing, to being able to fire once in the enemies turn, or reveal a surprise minefield on an enemy unit that just moved.

This encourages recon to no end, as both players light vehicles race out to try to grab the cards, usually having a small skirmish while the rest of the force advances. He who recons best gets the bonus of information, leading to artillery strikes, infantry showing up out of nowhere, tank reinforcements, etc.

They're carefully balanced to be a slight boost, but not too game changing.

Pumas on the other hand are very light and dont handle AT fire very well, so best used to race up into a hull down position and then defensively. Either that or just stay out of sight the whole time, then at an opportune moment pop out of cover and nail a tank in the side or rear at close range. Puma's are also pretty passable against infantry and light vehicles.
>>

I like that one!
>>
>>48016769
While an interesting mechanic it'd bother my autism because
>having a playing card ruin the terrain
>>
>>48018843
Yeah I have to agree with that one, but thankfully they only last 2 turns max, then they're all gone. Players snap them up pretty quickly. So quickly we had to make a rule that you can't capture them on turn 1!

You could potentially create small markers that fit in with terrain, like a small ammo dump or some such, and if a player makes contact with it, they just draw a card from a deck and remove the marker from the table.
>>
>>48019383
That might be a good compromise. Make a scenic marker with an agreed area of effect. Move into that area surrounding the marker and it triggers the rule.

Though you'd have to work on whether players place them blind (so you never know what you might set off, or where) or agree on them or whatever.

Men of War was great for this because as a vidya you had no idea where the enemy was until they came within LOS of some of your units. In that game recon was essential just to work out where the enemy was and what he was using.

Often using an officer with binocs was all you needed, but you still needed to spend a bit of time scanning around with said binocs, always well worth doing. Damn great game, still one of the best WW2 tactical games I've ever played. Single player campaign was glorious too, but 1 V 1 LANs were where it was at.

Any of you do individually based 6mm figs? Recommend it or not? What do you base them on? Cost and storage considerations are making 6mm increasingly attractive to me.

Can you tell officers or special weapons apart easily or do you color code the bases or similar?

I wouldn't do it - smallest scale I'd base separately is 15mm.

Stick a few on a base to represent a "unit" depending on ruleset (blitzkrieg commander 2 for example) this "unit" can represent a single platoon, company etc depending on how you want to go with it. That way you can have heavy units, support units, etc and they won't get all fucked up in storage.

Storage. Get something foam like for 28mm and pad it out with extra foam, or make your own. There are companies than make cardboard and foam storage which look good. I bought some plastic boxes and grey foam, cut it and glued it to size and stuff the figure in the boxes. DIY jobbie.

>There's literally no reason why a human VC player wouldn't pick Camo-Inf every single time. It literally can't lose unless it chooses to.

>Actually, there is a thing for the VC to do first. Flash a few civilians at the Americans to sap their war support and then just fall into CI for the rest of the game while low war support makes 'Gringo go home'.

A real concrete improvement to this as a game would be to add the 'Aid Worker' unit type to the Americans. A unit that, I dunno, auto-defeats the civilians and randomly improves war support or moral when auto slaughtered by CI (or TI?)

Cool ideas! I might make the Camouflaged infantry less effective against infantry, armor, and artillery. Especially infantry because they're going to expose the camouflaged infantry if they're in the same area. Marines should probably force engagement with the CI/TI

Although the VC constantly spamming camouflaged infantry and sapping war support would be pretty realistic :^)

I like the aid worker idea too. I was thinking about tunnel rats too, but there just weren't that many of them to make an impact.

Its untested at this stage, I'll hopefully give it a bash over the next few days, most of these problems should arise and be dealt with during the first playtest. Tempted to get the full color map printed and laminated at a local print shop...
>>
>>48036523
Why not introduce SOG patrols as something for the US, probably not as a unit but rather as an 'ability' so to speak, which either denies CI from entering/leaving the hexes around where they're patrolling or forces them to engage if attacked in that area.

I think I might go for something like a roll off to see if the US ground forces detect the Camo infantry. If they do, both must fight and the CI become locked for that turn. If not, then the CI can choose to engage. Having the CI always choose to engage is a bit overpowered. Playtesting as always will show up these kind of holes. Patrols are a great idea though. Unit declares its patrolling, and has some kind of recon effect to help show up camouflaged and tunneled infantry.

I've been playing the old NAM game from 1998. As much as it gets bad reviews its really gets the feeling of vietnam across. Been thoroughly enjoying it, especially all the SFX and constant radio chatter. There's always some kind of gunfire or air strikes going on, or someone yelling "MEDIIIC!!"

It tracks a political score and a Hearts and Minds score so killing VC increases political score while having your troops visit villages increases your H&M and gives intel about VC in the area.

Looks great! very much in line with what I'm trying to do. I played "nam 1965 - 1975" but its a bit old scool for my liking. Still kind of cool though.

I was thinking marines would be the "hardcore" infantry who are more capable than the standard Light Infantry. Not sure if introducing a 3rd type of infantry is such a good idea, but a specific recon one could potentially be cool. SOG or Green Berets or SEALs or something...

There any good system for campaign play? And anyone ever worked different games together? Say, an aerial warfare game, naval game, and land combat game for WWII, or maybe a land and skirmish game for a campaign about a civil war and espionage? Been thinking of combining three non-historical wargames together, and you guys seem like you'd know that best.
>>
>>48038050
Our homebrew WW2 game has full campaign play, and we've experimented with using navies and subs too, but shit gets kinda out of hand, we prefer to focus on land battles defined by the forces on the campaign map, with a little bit of air support and defense. Keeps things simple. Personally if I want to play WW2 naval I want to commit and just do naval, there's plenty of detail and different units (as well as the air factor) to keep things interesting.

I dont know how many WW2 game do campaign support, but I would hope that Flames of War and some of the other systems have map campaign systems. If not, they're missing out. Map campaigns combined with tabletop tactical games are some of the most fun you can have wargaming!
>>
>>48038135
So, wait, is the way to do a campaign just assigning armies movement ranges? Because that seems a bit clunky, more like Total War or Crusader Kings (I know, I'm pleb tier) than a tactics game.

Ideally in a campaign you want each faction to control supply routes and production centres, and be able to push their forces towards the enemy production centres, and try to capture them. He who controls the most production begins to produce much more than the others.

Think of the campaign map like Risk, but instead of rolling dice to determine the outcome of a battle, you play a tabletop game with miniatures, using the corresponding points values from the map as your points limit for each side.

You can check out the Campaign section at the end of this PDF for a more in depth look at how the campaign works. We've played a few long running campaigns with this system and its pretty tight.

Here's a review/walkthrough http://www.beastsofwar.com/force-on-force/modern-wargaming-introduction/

The idea is that modern soldiers of equal training will perform at about equal levels so focus is troop quality rather than worrying about the differences between 7.62x39 vs 5.45x39 etc

I think part of the popularity is that like Bolt Action, it was published as a series of high quality books so has 'curb appeal'

I haven't played SS so can't compare the two

I believe TFL is also working on a modern skirmish set
>>
>>48041194
At this point I don't even know why I played it for years.

The game has some great features, notably it delineates troop quality by the type of dice they use, there's heavy emphasis on suppression over casualties, tons of options for customising units... But its kind of a mess, the troop quality thing breaks down easily, the suppression and injury system turns into cycles of everyone falling over and standing up, the abstraction s are difficult to work with to downright counterintuitive, systems are poorly explained...

That's my biggest complaint.

Some of the guys the The Guild forum have a modern version of the Battlegroup rules though I don't think they've published it. Not sure if they're working towards an official publication or if it's just a fan mod of the WW2 rules.

BGG has a summarized FoF ruleset and possibly has some tweaks to the injury system. There's also an updated version due later this year that'll be called Ambush Alley (originally FoF was AA).

My biggest issue with the ruleset is that rulebook being disastrously organized.
>>
>>48041773
WW2 has a massively more huge following, given it's a far more readily understood cultural event with clear good and bad guys for the most part, fairly equally matched (on the small scale) armies, many interesting environments to fight over, strong imagery with a lot of different models of equipment for each army. The basic methods of the war have been ingrained into people through generations of movies and games.

Moderns has a lot less of that, a lot more confusing, asymmetric warfare or insanely destructive combined arms warfare (both of which people find really difficult to deal with on tabletop), massive amounts of firepower per person that has to be balanced out somehow, and a general disdain of 'too soon' present among a lot of wargamers, though I have noted mostly wargamers who have not been in any military.

>>48041842
No End In Sight does basically everything Force on Force does but simpler and better. Ended up playing a lot of that instead. No mixed dice types, injuries and suppression much easier to manage, far fewer special circumstance rules to remember (seriously that was a big problem, remembering the vast amount of situational modifiers to firepower dice), better at dealing with units larger than a fireteam...

I'm thinking on starting with historical wargaming with a focus on ww2. The games which people play in my club is Bolt action and flames of war. Which of these two is the best?
It seems to be bolt action is more tactical and flames of war is on a grander scale. Both of these things are great. Are the rules systems tight? Which is cheaper?
>>
>>48045337
BA is cheaper.
>>
>>48045553
>BA is cheaper.
That, for me, is a major point. Will I be able to play as frenchies or poles while still having a good time or will I be outgunned or slaughtered everytime?
>>
Is the plastic army men Stalingrad anon around? Anyone know what rules he plays? I took the bait and got out my old plastic soldiers and made some buildings out of card and a soviet sweet tin. Wrote some ultra simple rules too. It's great fun, like being a kid again.
>>
>>48040997
You can always take a look at FiveCore/No End in Sight as well.
>>
>>48045337
>BA is cheaper.
I'd say this depends heavily on the kind of forces you play on either side.
All-plastic forces for both games are quite reasonably priced, but things can get expensive if you need a lot of specific metal/resin models.

Personally, I prefer FoW for its grander scale and greater tactical depth.
It's more complicated (though still clearly a game and not a sim) but not horribly so.
I also feel that company-level battles are more interesting than the reinforced platoon level in typical BA games.

Still, if the folks at your club play both, I'd ask for a demo game of both and decide what to go for based on that.
Try before you buy remains an excellent principle, after all.
>>
>>48045775
full disclosure, I am a sarge for Warlord (aka I run demos for them in exchange for discounts and free models. Just full disclosure)

For Bolt action, depends on how big tanks are in your meta, and if there are gentleman's agreements to fight roughly equal time period forces or if its a free for all where 1939 forces could fight 1945. Late war tanks will functionally dominate early war tanks, however they cost far more. Early war infantry will have less access to anti tank assets and those they do have tend to be low firepower. However, Bolt Action is won and lost by your infantry, so as long as you have a solid core of soldiers with some good support you will do well in most areas.

The only real con I have towards Bolt Action is the tanks rules are not designed to be a tank on tank simulation, and playing tank platoons is annoyingly simple at times. However, its order dice mechanic, suppression system, fast and aggressive playstyle, and *usually* easy yo grasp rules make it a fun game. They also have a version 2.0 and a weird war expansion in the works, so the game has lots of support, is fairly established playerbase wise, and constantly has new models released.

Flames of war on the other hand prevents this by having three periods, Early, mid, and late war specifically.

Also, Flames can be cheaper if you play a general list by the big 4 powers. There are army deals plastic soldier company sells for example that can outfit almost an entire list of tanks and infantry for less than $100, with only a couple Battlefront lists needed to flesh them out. French or Poles however will cost more unless you wait for a sale. Also, resin and metal Battlefront models are much lower quality than resin/metal warlord models.

The big plus to Flames of war is a more regimented list building system, a DRAMATICALLY improved tank rules system, more varied missions, and overall depth.

Continue next post
>>
>>48046491
>for less than a $100, with only a couple battlefronT BLISTERS needed yo flesh them out.

fixed, sorry about that.

The big thing with flames is that It is far more complex than bolt action. You will have bigger books, more rules, and more missions. To give you an idea, there are specific sections in the rules devoted to recon troops, engineers, naval support, artillery spotters and even armored trains. These would be represented by a mere rule or two in Bolt Action. So depending on what kind of game you want, that may sound amazing or terrible. Also realize that armies cannot play against an army from another period very easily in Flames. Given how common tanks are, sometimes making up an entire army, switching eras is difficult. For example, a T26 company in EW can't even scratch the paint on a late war sherman company from the front. Each era has its own points formula, and a tank that costs 300pts in EW may barely cost 60 in late war.

I love both systems, and have over 5,000pts of models for both. If you want to play both, I would suggest doing Bolt Action in 15mm and mounting infantry on pennies or a similar sized base, and convincing your group to do the same, but thats obviously not an official thing and wouldnt work if you moved. But this leads to an awesome plus of whichever game you pick.

Everyone and their dog makes WWII models, so prices are as much as you want to pay. You want to pay twice as much for beautifully sculpted Peter Pig tanks? Go for it, theyre 15mm. You want dirt cheap swarms of infantry and dont care about how nice they look, Wargames factory can get you a german infantry company for $20. You can choose heroic or realistic scale, plastic or metal, molded on bases or tab slots, options are limitless.

Get a demo for both and realize each has its strengths. Both are fun in their own way and have tons of options.

I don't usually post stuff here. But I felt like changing it up. I'm in the process of finishing off a mix Heer/Fallshimjegger Kampfgroup for Battlegroup. Still have a few MGs to paint up and maybe a recoiless rifle or some other oddball things. Maybe a few more Heer. But seeing as I am doing this mostly to have an Axis army to dink around with I dunno. Also been thinking of getting some Italians so I can throw them in with my Heer for Ostfront.

Finished my 1/72 Mi-24.

I tried to save a couple bucks by getting a cheap old Matchbox kit off ebay which turned out to be badly engineered and need lots of putty to get everything to fit together. The decals disintegrated when I tried to float them off their backing paper, even after soaking in Microsol. I should have just spent a few dollars more and bought a modern kit like the Zevezda one.

Rotor was made by cutting a disc out of lexan then making a paper mask and airbrushing a dark blur along the leading edge. It comes off to make transport & storage easier.

I really should add some soot around the exhausts

The thing with WW2 and modern is that 28mm in not THE scale most people use.

Where I live Flames of War is THE WW2 game, we have annual tournaments, and a massive following. I've never even seen a Bolt Action game, and I got to many different clubs around the country.

Same with Modern, 28mm is far too large for anything but small modern skirmishes. FFoT or Force on Force are really designed for much smaller scales. 15mm or smaller.

July 1st makes the centennary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Nine corps of the French Sixth Army, the British Fourth and the Third Armies, attacked the German Second Army of General Fritz von Below, from Foucaucourt south of the Somme northwards to Serre, north of the Ancre and at Gommecourt, which was 2 miles (3.2 km) beyond, in the Third Army area. The objective of the attack was to capture the German first and second positions from Serre south to the Albert–Bapaume road and the first position from the road south to Foucaucourt.

The German defence south of the road mostly collapsed and the French had "complete success" on both banks of the Somme, as did the British from Maricourt on the army boundary, where XIII Corps took Montauban and reached all its objectives and XV Corps captured Mametz and isolated Fricourt. The III Corps attack on both sides of the Albert–Bapaume road was a disaster, making only a short advance south of La Boisselle, where the 34th Division had largest number of casualties of any Allied division on 1 July. Further north, the X Corps attack captured the Leipzig Redoubt, failed opposite Thiepval and had a great but temporary success on the left flank, where the German front line was overrun by the 36th Division, which then captured Schwaben and Stuff redoubts.

The first day on the Somme was the worst day in the history of the British Army, mainly on the front between the Albert–Bapaume road and Gommecourt, where the attack was defeated and few British troops reached the German front line. The British troops on the Somme comprised a mixture of the remains of the pre-war regular army, the Territorial Force and the Kitchener Army, which was composed of Pals battalions, recruited from the same places and occupations.

German counter-attacks during the afternoon recaptured most of the lost ground north of the Albert–Bapaume road and fresh attacks against Thiepval were costly defeats. On the north bank of the Ancre, the attack of VIII Corps was another failure, with large numbers of British troops being shot down in no man's land. The VII Corps diversion at Gommecourt was also costly, with only a partial and temporary advance south of the village. The German defeats from Foucaucourt to the Albert–Bapaume road, left the German defence on the south bank incapable of resisting another attack and a substantial German retreat began, from the Flaucourt plateau to the west bank of the Somme close to Péronne, while north of the Somme, Fricourt was abandoned overnight.

Several truces were observed to recover wounded from no man's land on the British front, where the Fourth Army had lost 57,470 casualties, of whom 19,240 men were killed. The French had 1,590 casualties and the German 2nd Army lost 10,000–12,000 men. Orders were issued to the Anglo-French armies to continue the offensive on 2 July and a German counter-attack on the north bank of the Somme by the 12th Division, intended for the night of 1/2 July, took until dawn on 2 July to begin and was destroyed. Since 1 July 1916, the cost of the battle and the "meagre gains" have been a source of grief and controversy in Britain; in German and French writing, the first day of the Battle of the Somme has been little more than a footnote to the mass losses of 1914–1915 and the Battle of Verdun.

More than any other battle in WW1 (except possibly Third Ypres), it's the Somme that seemed to form the permanent impression of the War in the Anglophone mind

Wilfred (Billie) Nevill (14 July 1894 – 1 July 1916) went to school at Dover College, where he distinguished himself as a scholar and a games player. He was Head Boy, played in the 1st XV for Rugby, the 1st XI for Hockey, the 1st Running team and was Captain of the Cricket XI. He went up to Jesus College, Cambridge in 1914, where he played hockey, but his academic career was cut short by the Great War. He joined the East Yorkshire Regiment but transferred to the East Surrey Regiment.

On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 8/Royal East Surreys left their trenches at Carnoy to attack German positions 300 yards away. As Captain and c.o. of B Company, Nevill, had purchased two footballs to kick across 'No Man's Land'.

He and his fellow officers were concerned about how their men would behave when finally called on to go over the top. To provide his soldiers with a reassuringly familiar symbol, Nevill bought the footballs while on leave in London and took them back with him to France.

In the face of murderous fire, and sustaining heavy casualties, they charged across the intervening ground with the footballs bouncing encouragingly before them. The combination of Nevill's initiative and their gallantry proved successful and they gained their objective. Nevill did not survive. He was killed just in front of the German barbed wire. Both footballs were later recovered.

One of the balls is currently displayed at the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Museum at Dover Castle and the other at the Queen's Royal Surrey Regimental Museum near Guildford, until the latter burnt down in a 2015 fire. Now only one ball remains.

'Touchstone' of The Daily Mail penned the following verse in tribute:

"On through the hail of slaughter,
Where gallant comrades fall,
Where blood is poured like water,
They drive the trickling ball.
The fear of death before them,
Is but an empty name;
True to the land that bore them,
The Surreys played the game."

I used yellow paint to kind of stick them down to a newspaper. Makes them a bit easier to work with as they're stuck down and wont move around. Then once that had dried partially I did the orange, red, and finally black.

Let the whole thing dry then just rip off the paper the ball was sitting on. It will have a flat paper bottom so will sit nicely on tanks and flat surfaces, and still be soft enough to kind of push into place over a vehicle.

Removing the turret makes for a nice flat surface to sit the flames on

The Cthulhu Wars: The United States’ Battles Against the Mythos (Osprey Dark)

From the Patriots' raid on the necromancer Joseph Curwen to the Special Forces' assault on Leng in 2007, this unique document reveals the secret and terrible struggle between the United States and the supernatural forces of Cthulhu. In this war, immortal cultists worship other-dimensional entities and plot to raise an army of the dead. Incomprehensible undersea intelligences infiltrate and colonize American seaports, and alien races lurk beneath the ice of Antarctica and high in the mountains of Afghanistan. It is only through constant vigilance and violence that the earth has surived. Also included are threat reports describing the indescribable - humanity's deadliest foes serving Cthulhu and the other Great Old Ones. Strange times are upon us, the world is changing, and even death may die - but, until then, the war continues.

Ok, around 2 month ago i found a glitch on Amazon. I used/abused it and reported it to the marketplace seller, but apparently they haven't fixed it and its still there.

Here is what i found:

There is a listing for "D Day Firefight" (the starter box) with a wrong picture (it shows the Warlord games partisan squad) and the wrong price of 21€. (price fits the partisan squad).

So i went ahead and ordered it hoping for a D Day Firefight-box for 21,81€ + 2€ shipping.
Sadly they sent me the box of partisans. I "complained" and told them that i wanted the D Day box and they explained that there is an error in the amazon system with some article numbers and whatever.. they also told me that i can keep the partisans and that they are sorry for the mistake and issued a full refund. So basically i got a box of Warlord partisans for free.

Since i doubt it will work twice for the same person, here is the link:

Tell me folks, does any of you own/played a marvel that is ,,Pony Wars"? Is there any chance for PDF/photos of the book? I hypnotised, even through I can't imagine owning 1500 figures for a single period...

What is it with people putting minis on coins? Ever heard of washers? They're sold by the pound for pennies in hardware stores.
>>
>>48073818
I've got a fuckload of pennies sitting around that I won't ever be using so it saves me a trip to the hardware store.
>>
If you want to do the larger battles be sure to check out what is out there in 15mm and 6mm. Peter Pig does a 15mm range and game for the era called Bloody Barons (and is the only era specific game I know of just for WotR). I think magister millitum does a 6mm range, and Impetus is a good a rules set and one of the supplement books (I think #2) has specific army lists for the sides and a rather nice campaign system.

I don't think so mate

As I've said in an earlier topic, washers are magnetic, while change are not. Not sure about the penny tho.

Americans view pennies as worthless. I'm about the only guy I know who will pick them up, although thats because I have a free change machine at the bank so its not a big deal to exchange them. And I say this has a guy who has about $2 worth being used as bases
>>
So there is a 50% off sale for ww2 on blacktree design. Sadly their pics are pretty bad and small so i can't see shit.

Has anyone ever ordered from them? How is the casting quality of the minis? How are the details?

I had some of their Soviets about 15 years ago, from what I remember a few of them had a bit of flash but overall they were pretty nice figs. If the molds are 15+ years old though they might be worn out

That's a nice table but really should have been done at 6mm or 10mm. River is lovely though

Canuckfag here. My friends gave me a couple kilos worth of pennies when the government decided to phase them out. The penny had so little (perceived) value that it was easier/cheaper for people to dump ten bucks of change on me than spend their time taking it to the bank.

British 1, 2, and 5 pence pieces are magnetic.

If you base on 5pence you are a madman though.

Sure picked an obscure one there anon. It has a brief entry on BGG but I can't find a pdf anywhere. I wonder if it's even been scanned.
