What's wrong with starting off in a tavern?

Taverns are nice.
>>
>>47995399
purely the cliche factor

and eveyone demanding "originality" with no appreciation for establishment of a scene
>>
Taverns are fucking staples to the genre. Every adventure should include a tavern sequence. Back before the times of the internet people needed to collect information in taverns from the locals.
>>
Making dumb shitposts as an excuse to post your shitty dA waifu isn't nice.
>>
>>47995422
>purely the cliche factor
>>47995431
>Taverns are fucking staples to the genre.

Both of these. Taverns make sense as social gathering places, but because of that they're overused. It's a cliché because, like many clichés, it simply works. Some change is refreshing though, from time to time.

When starting an adventure you could come up with some convuluted narrative (like "you're all prisoners", but even that is being turned into a cliché by the Elder Scrolls games) that might turn out to be fun if everyone plays along, but when the DM starts out with "you all start in a tavern", everyone knows what's up.
>>
Most DMs don't know how to make a tavern worth visiting.

Barkeep, order drinks, get rumor, go on quest. Do it enough times, and it just makes you want to skip all that and start off in the dungeon.
>>
If you have started a new game so many times that it has become cliche, time to take a break or start looking into another hobby.
>>
>>47995598
How do you make a tavern worth visiting then, other than that one tavernier/bar wench who knows you on a first name basis and remembers your favorite drinks and snacks?

I'm a bit of a culinary enthusiast, so I tend to be pretty detailed when it comes to food and drink in my settings, sometimes going as far as to give my regions regional cuisines based on IRL cuisines. I guess that's also why my settings always have a not!France
>>
Trying to think of a tavern name, but all that comes to mind right now is The Subtle Dick Joke.
>>
>>47995572
>It's a cliché because, like many clichés, it simply works.
Uh, I don't think you know what a cliché is.

>A cliché or cliche (/ˈkliːʃeJ/ or /klJˈʃeJ/) is an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even to the point of being trite or irritating, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel.
>>
>>47995729
>The [noun]
>The [adjective] [noun]
>The [noun] of [region]
>[Name]'s [type of establishment]

Examples
>The crown
>The bejeweled crown
>The crown of Cornwall
>Cornelia's cookery
>>
>>47995399
I don't know. My DM never starts us in a tavern. I feel like I'm missing out.
>>

Seven Secrets Tavern.

Players entertain themselves by slowly discovering its seven secrets.

1. The mounted minotaur head will animate and answer any question if you offer it a drink.
2. The cook in the back is actually a merman that sits in a barrel.
3. At 2AM, the ghost of a halfling appears and sits in the reserved seat at the bar, with seven secrets of his own.
4. The recipe for the roasted chicken doesn't include chicken.
5. The king visits once a month dressed as an old lady.
6. The minotaur head is actually just a cow head.
7. There is no seventh secret.

>it's a small town and the only place renting rooms
>it's got a gambling room in the back, plus all the characters who'd go there
>it's the tavern-of-choice for certain someones
>no one has ever died while asleep in their room

Take your pick.
A tavern alone is of no note. A tavern is either a reflection of the society it exists in, or a rejection of that same society however. A flat town means a flat tavern. You see where this is going.

>why is the moralfag in prison?

Corrupt police, mistaken identity, committed a crime under a wizard's mind control, protested an unjust law, saved an innocent from a witch-burning, got in a barfight for good reasons, framed by fairies... are you under the impression that good people never wind up in prison, in real life or in stories?

>if your strong enough to break out, how did you get arrested in the first place?

are you further under the impression that jailbreaks never occur, in reality or fiction?

>you better not be relying on a GMPC to help them

That's not necessary, but it's a perfectly fine way to start a campaign. Questgiver posts bail, asks them to do a quest in return.

>would the moralfag even want to break out if they have faith they'll be found innocent?

Do you also think innocent people always get out? Do you not know anything about jail, even about jail in stories?
>>
>>47996694
Point me to another major work that will inspire the GM to start the game with a prison break.
Riddick, Andy Dufresne, and Manuel Garcia "Mannie" O'Kelly-Davis are not level one characters either.

If you're looking for a gross, run down dive-like tavern name, go with "The Grody Toadstool".
>>
>>47996752
I think he just meant Lawful characters and not just MORALFAGS. A lawful good character would have to break their alignment to break out of jail, but only if they were put their lawfully according to the laws of his land or order
So yeah, there are plenty of ways out of jail.

well, from >>47996762, the major works listed are TES, Riddick, and a character from shawshank, and google tells me, a Heinlein novel.
The comeback, >>47996949, names Shawshank, which had already been excluded.
It's akin to asking someone to name an excellent series of fantasy novels, exclusing Conan because it's obvious, and getting told Conan anyway.

The better question is: did the characters in Shawshank have levels?

Now fuck off if that's all you've got to say.
>>
>>47997691
If you were actually against the nazimod you wouldn't be trying to board police so fucking hard.
>>
>>47995399
Taverns are nice.
I feel that food fight is pretty much how to use taverns ever since I learned some shadowrun. Regardless of setting. Or genre, really. Anybody can have a food fight unless you are some kind of... quasi-real non-entropic energy being.
>>
>>47997735
You apparently don't know the meaning of board police, and apparently you haven't a fucking clue about what Nazimod actually did. The retarded OP is continuously shitting up the board with vague non-contributing topics that never lead to anything, for reasons that I'm either too untouched in the head to imagine, or simply because he wants to post his waifu from some shitty dA comic.
>>
>>47997807
Your arguments are almost exactly the same as those who supported and demanded the nazimod.
Especially the parts about how you have some kind of righteous cause against some mysterious phantom shitposter.
What I'm confused about is how touched in the head you have to be to have the paranoid fantasy that everyone who posts an image with a person who is drawn in it and a legitimate discussion topic is the same person.
>>
>>47997807
Sometines it's fun to talk about vague shit you will never Talk about again.
>>
>>47997855
>daily threads with the same girl
>threads all have vague topics and OP doesn't contribute to the discussion
>different people each time
It's fairly obvious it's the same guy each time. And what legitimate discussion? About what? Who's saying it's wrong to start in taverns? Does OP give examples? Does he provide an argument? Is there at all a topic to discuss here? And for the record: Nazimod wasn't just some vague no fun allowed thing, he was a dude who didn't understand what creativity was or how it happened, and basically just cared about rules: board rules and rules discussion, and he baleeted tons of attempts at creativity or discussions that typically ended up doing or facilitating something creative. OP doesn't do any of that. OP's posted nothing at all save his waifu and a few words to make anons bump his waifu for awhile. These threads never lead to anything creative, never will, and have no value whatsoever.
>>
>>47997990

Fair enough point.
He obviously has some kind of paranoid delusional shit going on.

On the tavern point, I think it's pretty cool that people are swinging around to non-ironic enjoyment of old cliches nowadays. I am so tired of people trying to make things they think are original instead of things they think are cool, which may or may not be original as a side effect.

>Questgiver posts bail, asks them to do a quest in return.

This right here? This is a superb, albeit simple and slightly cliche, plot hook. It puts just about any kind of party together, gives them a reason to stick together, and makes that reason questionable enough to be a plot point later on. While the basic options are explicit and incredibly straightforward, you can do all kinds of things with this opener.

Being broke and needing a drink and a job?

The idea of the Tavern opener, the conception of the cliche, is that they don't need to have anything else in common. Rough-and-tumble types frequent certain establishments, those of Greater Means discover which these are and visit said establishments looking for Alternative Methods of Problem Resolution when the normal avenues fail. Perhaps rumors circulate through the aformentioned watering holes and up-and-coming Kidney-Stabbers, Spine-Breakers and Washed-Out Apprentices comingle their independently inexperienced and weak resources.

Maybe my answer is obvious, but I suppose I feel your question is as well.

The only place this conversation will lead is into the discussion of "what is good" and "what is lawful", because depending on the frame of reference, Socrates was dedicated to Lawful Good because by Plato's definition at least, you need a lawful and good society before you can have a Just society, but from a way that got him executed for "poisoning the minds of the youth" or somesuch.

Even the most railroady of openings, being prisoners, I would thoroughly enjoy if the DM makes it interesting or good.

Taverns and prisons, are fertile grounds for quests, plot, and character development.

Well, you know, women's sexuality tends to be complicated. There's plenty of exceptions, but for most women it involves, y'know, various erogenous zones and sensitive spots around the body, the whole sensuous experience, being in the right mood. An effective glory hole would have to be pretty massive and at that point why bother with a hole? A glory blindfold is more efficient.
>>
>>48001300
That actually really helps put things in perspective.

It's probably a lot easier to get players to engage in interesting dialogue if they're in an interesting place doing something interesting.

Taverns are great. The problem with Middle Earth/Greyhawke style settings is that DMs make them without understanding the role of a food/shelter/booze center in a medieval setting and treat it like a nightclub then tick off the whole "Prancing Pony" atmospheric plot points for no in-game reason.

You have an easier time getting it over with players if instead of you have the "meet at the tavern" where a mysterious stranger gives them a mysterious job that they feel compelled to do for some mysterious reason, have them meet at Jim's. Jim's is on the outskirts of town because they have a small equipment maintenance shop and a huge stable that eats up a lot of space. Because Jim's is so suited to it a lot of delvers and sell-swords crash there in between gigs they've got a menu that runs from oatmeal to Beef Wellington. So much hiring goes on there that Dave (that's Jim's son, RIP Jim) has put a noticeboard so people can just post if they want to,but a few still like to hire in person.

If your looking for social company, Margie's worth every penny and has a permanent room but there's plenty of Merc Mice (soldier groupies) in and out but you're responsible for those rooms. That's not the company most are there for, though, as the main reason people are there is to form a company, get hired on to one, or just hire one in general.

I've *never* had a party complain about starting at Jim's.

Man I've always wanted to run a campaign where the players were running a tavern in a high fantasy setting.
>Being inspected by the guards since a cult has started using your tavern as a meeting place
>Should we let this half orc in?
>A dwarf drank all our ale last night how are we going to find a taverns worth of ale before the busy hours?
>Two magic users get into a duel and nearly burn the place down, but not before one of them animated all the tables and chairs and we had to fight them.
-seriously, it will never run because it doesn't appeal to murder hobos but I would LOVE this campaign as a GM. Players could keep finances on the bar and the adventures for them would just walk in the door.

I'd play that.

Can I be the Dwarf hunter who keeps the tavern stocked with meat?

Fine then! But when the other customers get pissed that there is no alcohol I'll point them in the direction of the stumbling dwarf at the end of the bar!

I'd love that game!

Starting off a campaign in a Tavern isn't wrong, per sé. It's more that starting off this way usually is the platform for your group to come together while having no general common ground.

"Four strangers meeting in a tavern and decide they're going to be buisiness partners dedicated to vaguely defined endgoals" leaves enough space for individual characters to be designed completely contrarian to the group's dynamic, such as the Lawful Paladin on his quest to save the princess in the group of loothoarding murderhobos or the edgy cunt with the nervous triggerfinger in a group of dedicated vigilantes setting out to end the demon king's advance.

In other words: A tavern or an inn for that matter can be a great place to start because these places are actually stocked and built to support wandering adventurers, but without proper DM guidance _before_ the group meets at this place leads to inconsistent and potentially counterproductive character creation that will inevitably cause problems if you're looking for good chemistry.
>>
Reminds me, wasn't there a thread long ago about a tavern (or was it an inn?) manned by a lich?

There's something about the PCs running errands for the lich, iirc

>You all begin in vastly different areas of the city given your professions and we're going to spend the first two sessions railroading you all into the same room

Yeah. Nothing wrong with a "You're here, who cares why" start. Unless your players love sitting silently for hours while each one navigates to some contrived plot garden

They dont meet itself because they dont have magnetic power.
Each player start at a different place and do whateaver the fuck their characters would be that I am almost sure wouldnt lead to meeting other characters

>might be interesting if I have each of the PCs explain how their character knew the deceased.

Read Carrion Crown.

Not only does it require you to have a reason to attend the funeral, the AP expects each character to give a speech in the first session how they knew the dead guy.
