Karmic Guide, Reya Dawnbringer, Sun Titan, Loyal Retainers, Order of Whiteclay, Pulsemage Advocate, and Reveillark are some of the creatures that do it off the top of my head, and several spells do it too. Most notably Resurrection, which was in ABU.

Typically, that's 15-7 creatures, 6-9 noncreature spells, and 16-18 lands. What you're able to play successfully is gonna depend on what cards are in your packs. How each color actually plays out will vary a bit from set to set.

I would recommend either checking out "The Magic Show" on youtube, or LRCast.com.
The Magic Show is a bit more casual, as in only one of the 2 guys doing them is a pro, but Brad Nelson is my favourite pro player by far, plus the set reviews they make are always comfy, although Evan might get on your nerves sometimes.
Limited Resources has better, and more accurate predictions and information, as well as more content in general. You'll really learn the ins and outs of both a set and limited in general.
The set reviews for SOI are already out, so definitely watch those.
Moon should follow a week or so after the entire set has been spoiled.

Three mana for a 2/3 seems bad when you can already get that with Town Gossipmonger or Thraben Inspector + any pump effect. Though maybe the fact that it spits out two Humans every time it attacks makes it at least worth trying. It's no Hero of Bladehold, but it might be close enough, especially with Thalia's Lieutenant.
As for the Battlements, I'm not sure the deck can afford a colorless land. Giving a creature haste to continue putting on pressure after a wrath might be good.

i'm not sure if the garrison is playable, but ifnit sees play, this is why you meld it. when you run out of things to do and have more mana than you'll ever need you toss out the trampling 3/2 maker and suddenly your opponent has a whole new scale to have to cope with. imagine playset if garrison while the land is only one or two-of

The thing is, each card can function well by itself. The creature part is a 3 mana token generator and aggro decks will pounce on something that that and the land gives haste for effectively 2 mana. The transformation is just icing on the cake.
