You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were standing side by side with Portland, San Francisco, and Enterprise in the Tarawa's well deck. It was God knows what time in the morning, but it was pitch black outside, with only the soft illumination of the stars and moon barely highlighting the clouds and waves.

Naturally, due to the warmtime regulations, Tarawa and her escorts were running full blackout procedures, reducing external lighting and keeping electronic sensors and communications to a minimum. It was still uncertain if the Abyssals could detect, much less intercept or understand human communications or signals, but nobody was taking any chances.

Plus Argentina would start asking questions on why an American fleet was hanging around so close to its coast.

"Are you ready, Hoel?" Portland puts a hand on your shoulder. You see that even in the dim lighting, her Rig, like yours, had been painted completely black, with extra cosmetic protrusions attached to make it resemble Abyssal design. Even her clothes were different, with her normal sailor uniform replaced with a simple form fitting black bodysuit. Hell, she had even removed her trademark glasses and undid her ponytail, making her look like an almost completely different person.

Meanwhile, you were pretty much the same. Your Rig was painted black and slightly modified to change its outline, and you were also wearing a black bodysuit. You didn't look EXACTLY like an Abyssal, but these measures, combined with the darkness of the night, would be enough to fool the regular human eye.

"Yeah, of course I am, Sweet Pea!" You nod, though you could feel your hands trembling slightly.

"If you don't feel comfortable about shooting at human targets, I understand." Portland leans in closer so nobody else could hear her. "I'll cover for you if that's the case."

The ships she fought back then were basically of human targets as well, since they were crewed by humans, so this is not that different. Besides, the Navy provides plenty of artillery support as well, which specifically meant targeting humans or human-based installations.

"Well, were originally built to fight humans." You shrug. "So I'm not bothered."

"Good to hear." Portland sighs. "Still, never did like doing shady ops like this."

"What, this isn't the first time?" You raise an eyebrow suspiciously.

"Well, even though everybody's united against the Abyssals, humans will be humans, and they'll try to find a way to get a step ahead of everyone else." Portland instinctively moves to adjust her glasses before remembering she's not even wearing them. She hesitates and gives you a brief but shy look wondering if you had caught that.

"Uh huh. Guess it was too optimistic to think it would be all rainbows and sunshine, huh?" You sigh.

"You two ready?" San Francisco grumbles, clearly unhappy.

"Jeez what crawled up your bilge pump tonight?" You retort.

"I'm sober." San Francisco groans as if she was suffering from a terminal illness.

"This is an important mission, so everybody needs to be clear minded!" Enterprise tuts. "San Fran, I know how you like taking up the bottle to take off the edge, but we can't afford you making mistakes!"

"Mistakes are all I'm good for." San Fran rolls her eyes. "Just one drink! Enough for a buzz!"

"No, San Fran." Janice crosses her arms, indicating she wouldn't budge on the matter. "You need to learn to operate without that poison!"

You had to admit, it was a bit funny seeing San Fran actually being subservient to another ship, but, well, she was talking back to a carrier, and not just a regular carrier. This was motherfucking ENTERPRISE. Who could talk back to a legendary ship like that?

"I see you girls are all lively tonight." The Captain mutters as he steps into the well deck. "You've all memorized the plan?"

"I'll provide air cover and reconnaissance." Enterprise says matter of factly.

"I'll interdict any Argie reinforcements that will try to come in." San Francisco nods.

"I will perform shore bombardment to clear a path for STRIKE-1 and draw enemy attention." Portland explains.

"And you, Hoel?" The Captain asks you as if he was quizzing you.

"I'm escorting Enterprise." You say. Despite all intelligence saying that Argentina's navy was practically a joke by modern standards, they still had teeth, especially since they were operating on their own home turf. Post-Abyssal mobilization also mean they were operating a lot of surplus American and European equipment in order to bolster against attacks from Antarctic Abyssals. Argentina was expected to deploy a number of newly built patrol ships and submarines, as well as loaned American aircraft and frigates.

And Enterprise was still just a simple carrier girl. Sure, her air wing was incredibly potent, but in the end her own actual offensive and defensive abilities were poor. If she were caught in the open, even a regular patrol boat stood a chance of sinking her.

"Good." The Captain nods. "STRIKE-1 will be in the air in one hour. As you know, our girls are being held in a secure Argentinian naval facility, so Portland, you'll have your work cut out for you rolling back their defenses."

"I can do it, sir." Portland assures him.

"Hoel, you'll be Enterprise's only support in the immediate area. Keep a close eye on her."

"That's what I'm built for!" You grin.

"Well, it seems we're all ready, aren't we?" Mallory says cheerfully.

"What's HE doing here?" San Fran narrows her eyes.

"Merely observing. One of our ships is involved in all this, after all."

"Just leave it." Portland quickly leaps in, gently pushing San Fran towards the well deck's exit. "Let's go."

"Well now, Hoel, are we ready to go?" Enterprise asks you sweetly.

"Yeah! Let's go!" You nod in excitement.

"All right, all right!" Enterprise chuckles as she pats you on the head. For some reason that felt REALLY good coming from her! "Come along, then!"

Both you and Enterprise give a last farewell wave to the Captain and the well deck crew as you all finally steam out into the night. Your black rigs immediately melt into the darkness, and of course, like the rest of the fleet, you keep all of your running lights off. Up ahead, Portland and San Francisco were already spearheading the way, though they were far enough that you couldn't get a clear visual on them. Well, you could've easily spotted them with your radar, but the Admiral and Captain had specifically cautioned you against that. Despite the Argies not being particularly advanced, there was still the possibility they could detect your radar emissions and get tipped off to your location.

"Hmmmm, it's been a while since I've done night operations." Enterprise sighs. "Have you had to do any of those, Hoel?"

"Just few night patrols, both now and then." You shrug. "I heard a bit about the night battles early on, though."

"I see, I see...." Enterprise nods as she stares off into the darkness.

"Worried about San Fran?" You ask, skating up alongside Enterprise.

"I suppose I am." Enterprise admits. "You know how she is. She's never liked night battles."

"Yeah, I know what went down between her and Atlanta." You nod. "Honestly, night fighting in general was a shit show. Wish we had all this cool nightvision shit back then!"

"I know she says she can handle it, but honestly, I'm certain she's just posturing." Enterprise shakes her head, her long brown hair shimmering in the moonlight. "Did you know that she always operates alone at night?"

"No, but I can see why she'd want to." You frown.

"An Abyssal submarine or air attack squadron would be all it takes to do her in." Enterprise sighs. "But the stubborn girl just never accepts help."

"Are you just worried about San Fran in particular or something?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Of course not." Enterprise gives you a wry smile that can barely be seen in the darkness and pats you on the head again. "I'm worried about EVERY ship in the fleet. Including you!"

"Sorry, I shouldn't have asked." You say a bit meekly. No point pressing this issue during a mission. "Okay, I think we're at the launch point."

"That we are." Enterprise nods, regaining a bit of her composure. "All right, Portland and San Fran should still be heading for their positions, but that doesn't mean we can't do a bit of recon, can we?"

You then see Enterprise begin to slow down a bit so she can begin launching her planes. You see her take out her signature Garand rifle. However, instead of firing it normally, she instead screws a suppressor onto the barrel. You suppose that it was her way of launching her night fighters. With the suppressor placed securely on the barrel, she takes aim into the sky and fires off the entire clip. The suppressor masks the normal crack of the gunshots into soft puffs, almost inaudible over the rolling of the waves.

There isn't even the signature flash as the bullets transform into planes. You just watch as the vague silhouettes of Hellcats disappear into the night sky, the only evidence of their presence being the brief disappearance of stars in the sky as they passed under them.

"And off they go." Enterprise smiles. "Hoel, perhaps you so go about and set up a perimeter? I think I can handle things here for the moment.

Huh, well, she did have a point. Heading out and away from Enterprise would give both you and her better advance warning of threats, and that would allow you to start using your radar without immediately giving away her position. Then again, heading away so far from Enterprise meant you wouldn't be able to support her as quickly if something slipped past you...

"Roger that, E!" You salute sharply, even though you're not sure if Enterprise saw the gesture or not in the darkness and steam off a bit closer to the shore. Just over the horizon, you could see the coast of Argentina, illuminated by the occasional light. You figure this close to Antarctica, most of the lights were merely just navigational aids or by extremely brave residents who not only decided to stay on the coasts, but advertise their locations.

You can also see a particularly large cluster of lights, which should be the facility the other shipgirls were being held at. Indeed, you could see smaller searchlights on the water from patrol boats as they scoured the water for threats.

Well, that's probably something you should be doing, too. You could go active and use your radar and sonar to search your immediate area, but that would be sure to attract attention to yourself. Or, you could rely on your passive sensing options, which basically meant using your hydrophones and optics to try and spy any potential threats. Far less risk of detection, but your own detection would naturally be limited.

>CRITICAL SUCCESS

And focus your hearing as your hydrophones gulp in every possible sound. Immediately, your faeries filter out all of the white noise and the noise caused by the natural movement of the water. fiftey meters away is a school of fish, a pod of whales singing countless miles away, a wastewater vent on the shore discharging its contents into the bay...

And then you catch it. The continuous droning of an engine, a sound so consistent in its patterns that it couldn't be anything but manmade. It was quite a ways away, about a dozen kilometers or so. Not an immediate threat, but if it held its course it would eventually cross paths Enterprise, and you couldn't have that.

And that's also when you catch sight of what appears to be a reconnaissance helicopter in the sky. Too far away for you to reliable hear the engine, but it briefly silhouettes itself against the moon, giving you a rough idea of its position. You figure since it's at night, it's using radar or sonar to search for possible Abyssals. Probably spotting for that sub so it doesn't have to use its own sonar.

Now, at this point, you could go and directly deal with the sub and neutralize it as a threat, or you could try and go after the helicopter and blind the sub instead.

Then again, you could just warn Enterprise to just reposition, but that wouldn't change the fact these two threats would still be out here.

Your destroyer instincts get the best of you, and you immediately begin heading for the submarine's position. That thing was the most immediate threat at the moment, so that was what you had to deal with first. You check your watch. STRIKE-1 should be lifting off from the Tarawa now, which meant Portland will initiate her bombardment soon. That meant it wast best to deal with the sub now before it was tipped off.

"E, I got the scent of a sub." You report in a quick radio burst. "Moving in to neutralize it."

"Be careful!" Enterprise responds.

You check your available weapons. There were of course your depth charges, which would be your go to weapon against subs. Since it had no idea you were here, taking it out would be a piece of cake...

You decide to try and disable the sub. You didn't necessarily have to destroy it to neutralize it. Just dropping a few depth charges near the damn thing should knock out enough critical systems that it would be forced to surface for repairs. Yeah, that sounded simple enough.

Your depth charge racks rumble as they begin dispensing the small, soda can-sized explosives into your hands. You toss one of them up and down in your pitching hand to confirm the weight, and then glace at the projected position of the sub. All you had to do was get it close enough...

Using the full might of your pitching arm, you start lobbing depth charges at a rapid rate, carpeting the entire area in the portable explosives. All around, you could here the dull series of THUNKS as the weapons smashed through the water's surface, and a few seconds delay until a deeper WHUMP lifts the ocean surface into the air. More explosions follow in sequence. Your absolutely sure that you've gotten the sub bracketed in your depth charge attack, but you couldn't be sure. You focus on your hydrophones again, and you catch the sound of the sub's engines, now even louder as they go full speed. You didn't completely disable it, but you did scare the hell out of the crew. They were retreat back to their base!

Which... seemed like where Portland and San Francisco were now...

You glance back to the horizon, where you could see flashes of explosions on the shore as Portland began her assault. You couldn't really see the details, but the fires that were breaking out and the thick clouds of smoke rising into the night sky was telling of her precision fire.

At the same time, you could hear the distant buzz of helicopter rotors, no doubt clued in by the distressed sub crew.

"E! You got a helicopter headed you way!" You warn your carrier. "I gotta finish off that sub!"

"I'll send a flight to handle it!" Enterprise assures you. "Go on!"

You throttle up your engines and your boilers roar as you go to catch up with the sub. Howling of your engines renders your hydrophones useless, but you already have an idea of where the sub is. Your depth charge racks deposit more charges into your waiting hands, ready to unleash a fresh barrage.

Another series of explosions ripples throughout the water. You wait for a few seconds as nothing happens, and for a moment you're afraid that you've actually sent the sub to the bottom. However, right at moment, the waters part as a small black craft emerges from under the surface. The sub was finally forced up.

Unfortunately, you had completely forgotten that in that moment, you were still an "Abyssal", and you couldn't just sail over to capture them or anything, so when the sub crew began activating searchlights from the top of the conning tower to scan for threats, this naturally was not a good thing for you. You couldn't allow them to get a good look at you!

You immediately pull a 180 degree turn and speed away. However, you get illuminated by a searchlight anyways. Fortunately, all they can see is your back, which is obscured by your disguised Rig. However, that doesn't stop you from flinching when you feel bullet impacts against it.

Were they... were they actually shooting at you with small arms?!

Then again, you suppose they've really got nothing else to lose. But now that they've seen you they're sure to report the direction you're heading.

You fire a few parting shots with your Rig mounted five inch cannon in response to the gunfire, but you deliberately avoid scoring a direct hit on the disabled sub, instead dropping your shells in the water around it. However, you have one sail just a handful of meters over the conning tower, convincing the crew on board taking shots at you to duck down for cover.

In the sky ahead of you, you see an explosion as the helicopter in the air is taken down by Enterprise's fighters, their engines blazing a fiery red as their push their engines to the max.

A quick scan of the shore shows the Argie base was now an inferno as multiple fires were burning. In between Portland's shore bombardment and Enterprise's bombing runs, there really wasn't much left of the surface installations. A perfect backdrop for STRIKE-1 to touch down in.

A few flashes over the water seems to indicate that San Fran was engaged in battle as well, no doubt with some of the Argies' larger ships. However, you had no idea of her status since she was staying off the radio.

"STRIKE-1 is beginning their approach." Enterprise informs you. "But my planes are picking up aerial contacts. Very fast ones. It looks like they've called in their air support."

"What's the call, Enterprise?" Portland asks. "Do we fall back? I think we've done all we can and they're starting to mobilize helicopters on me."

"Speak for yourself." San Fran grunts and you can hear the bangs of rapid cannon fire from distant gunboats flooding her comms. "I still need to disengage from these assholes."

"My fighters can hold them off for a bit." Enterprise responds. "But I'd have to commit all my available squadrons to tie them up..."

"I should've figured..." Portland sighs.

"Sorry, I don't have time to tell her how fucking stupid she is." San Fran grumbles loudly as she presumably dodges more shellfire. "You two make sure she doesn't get herself killed."

"The others will need the air cover more than me." You assure Enterprise. "Don't worry, I can handle myself."

"A-all right." Enterprise responds, not quite convinced. "Just be careful!"

"I'm a destroyer, I don't need to be careful!" You laugh as you veer off. This time, you unleash your radar so you can get a better idea of where the enemy planes are coming from, and that's when you "see" them. Four incoming aircraft with another four immediately behind them for a strike wing of eight total craft. Analyzing the shape, you figure that they're F-16s. Undoubtedly some of the hold surplus airframes the US handed over.

That meant they'd be packing the kind of weapon you really had no experience in dealing with, guided missiles. Now, you knew that most of the anti-shipping missiles the military used today were radar guided, and weren't designed to hit targets as small as you or most other Abyssals. So here you were hoping that you'd be able to juke those attacks. They'd certainly be able to outrange you unless they decided to get suicidally close to ensure a hit.

And sure enough, with your radar running hot, the Argie aircraft immediately begin to vector towards you. However, you notice that they're not firing their missiles yet. Were thy trying to get close to get a better shot?

Whether by pure skill or just plain dumb luck, most of the missiles the F-16s fire seem to fail to acquire a lock on you, and instead spiral into random directions. Looks like they fired before they could get a proper lock.

However, a couple of missiles actually manage to start tracking you, but a last minute swerve proves to be just enough to throw them off, and you watch the incoming missiles slam harmlessly into the water. The first flight of F-16s then turns away, their munitions spent.

But the second flight is still coming in hot and fast.

Same thing I said last time you asked, you run so late I can only stick around for one, maybe two choices. However, it is starting to bother me how it seems like we are never in any real danger. I know you won't kill off characters, and you don't need to force it like planefag loves to do, but even when we roll bad, and the enemy rolls good, all that happens is slight damage or are put in a somewhat precarious position. This was especially bad in VTQ. Rereading PJ witches you had Pierce severely injured when the players had him try to solo Raikov near the beginning, and something like that should apply when we try to solo a BB or something.

It would give the board a bit more standing if another long-standing QM were to make the transition over, Merc. As it stands, /qst/ is in an odd sort of limbo, both standing on its own and not. If you or a couple other die-hards were to switch over it would establish the board as a more permanent part of the site as a whole, and help ease the transition.
