ITT: We discuss normie board games

What board game what your family probably own is the least terrible? Monopoly is crap, Risk is barely passable, I personally think Clue/Cluedo is one of the few half fun mainstream board games. And even then the board serves basically no purpose and if you ignore the 'must be in a room to suspect someone' rule then you could play cluedo with just the cards.

Scrabble.

Monopoly is actually pretty good if you follow the actual rules. The problem is that people are so used to playing with shitty house rules that are designed to keep anyone from ever being allowed to win.

If you play actual by the book monopoly it's a decent enough auction game that can be played in about 90 minutes.

I have very fond childhood memories of risk and clue, so I may be slightly biased, but I still play those games from time to time. Nice to be able to play a game where some strategy is involved and that doesn't take an hour to set up, and an hour to break down.

Depends how loosely you define "normy". I enjoy games like Tapple and Suspend and Dr. Eureka and Telestrations that aren't quite as famous as the Milton Bradley/Parker Bros. ones that got big, but they still sell pretty well.

With a stricter definition, though, I like Scattergories.

Reeeeee.

risk would be more fun if the board wasn't such shit
>game is a race to take over the americas, which can then only be defeated by someone who controls asia and australia
>woe betide anyone who attempts to survive in africa or europe

I would be interested in playing some sort of Catan/Risk hybrid however.

Catan is the only board game I can play with my family without instiling a small scale war.
Wich is a shame because I like to play board games. Blokus was fun for a bit until we figured how to win at it when playing with only three players (the game's alright for 4 players).

There's still a very big deal of randomness in it and not that much strategy. There's a joke about actual real estate there.
>>47925282
I never played risk but I've been intrigued since I courted best girl in a visual novel.
>>
>>47925526
You'd imagine it would be Catan that instigated more conflict than, say, Scrabble.
>>
>>47923098
No it's not. Even playing with the auction rule most people ignore, it's still a game entirely about lucky rolls and scamming your 6 year old niece.

My mother and I have been through paramedical studies and my sister brings words from german that don't exist in our language. Both of my parents dislike playing for too long.
Catan is a fine equilibrium of randomness and strategy, and the games are short enough that nobody becomes tired about it and bitvhy.

what are you, a fucking roastie or something?

There *is* a card-game version of Clue.

Judging by what few games are "normie" boardgames these days, they pretty much survive by that asshole who really wants to play because he enjoys smashing other people in his want of "fun" (Which even he's not having by the end.)

inb4 Catan's a normie boardgame, because it's not.

Risk is a total shit tier game.

>There's a joke about actual real estate there.

And it's probably intentional. It's an anti-capitalist polemic.
>>
>>47927998
the concept is good but it's too shallow
there's also zero opportunity for a come-back unless you're playing with scaling reinforcement cards, which just leads to that one fag in austrialia suddenly pushing out with 30 armies.

Risk game of thrones

Clue is usually solved after about 3 rounds of interrogation because it's too easy to see what your opponents check off.

It's only wort playing if you never play with the clue pads and have to actually memorize what you've seen, and guess what opponents show each other.

That's a nice board actually. Far better than the original since it's possible to circumvent countries, meaning that whoever gets stuck in the middle, i.e. Europe and Africa, aren't just caught in the battlegrounds.

>there's also an Essos edition
>you could run two games simultaneously with 12 players

woah

Good thing only the official dictionaries count no? Or just use the words from the accepted dictionary in the rules, it varies by country.
>>
>>47928663
Sure what kind of dictionary? We've got a huge three volumes generalist one, two medical disctionaries and several specialised dictionaries.
No matter how you look at this, it's a nightmare and nobod's ever happy.

Scrabble is great. So is Taboo.

Word games in general are usually okay.
