So, I'm trying to do a model with the bottom like this, smoke and mist.

How would I go about that, I guess? I figured on a wire frame, and then something to model the smoke, but I wasn't sure what.

I don't need it to look exactly like smoke, so if there's a method to do a more solid greenstuff concept for it, that would be great as well.

Went looking, found this as roughly what I'm interested in.

This is what I'd like to go for. It doesn't feel especially hard to model, since it's just a semi formless shape, but I'm curious on if there's any specific tricks or concepts to doing it.

You're either courageous or more gifted than I am. Probably the latter. It's a bit disheartening to have all these tiny bits on paperclips waiting to be painted.
But at least the painting is simpler and putting together really feels like the last steps, and it's so damn enjoyable to see it finally come to life.

After suggestion by someone in here about a week ago, I finally got a hold of some Oomoo to make molds with. Here are three I have made.

First one was a test with a Micro Art Studio Old Factory 50mm base. Should have done it with the insert off, but that thing was goddamn solid, so fuck it. Also, I didn't pour enough on the side with actual detail, so I think it might fuck up when pouring the resin. We'll see.

Last completed one is a sprue of three tombstones from a set made by Reaper. The other 3 weren't part of a sprue, and I wan't to make just 3 more for a friend's Carrion Thralls he bought at Lock N' Load.

I should probably cut some lines between the center stone to the two on the side, for the same reason as for the 'thrope tail.

The things I can pick on is the firetruck red weapons, and just a really boring colour scheme. Whites could use a wash or something to give depth, edge highlights may need some touch ups to straighten them up.

I didn't do that base the way you're describing because it was my test mold to make sure I understood the process. A simple thing with smooth surfaces. So /tg/, got into painting minis a bit after following the thread. Bought some shitty brushes to start out with, and they all went to shit, so started buying some nicer ones, especially for detail work.

How the fuck do I learn to care for brushes? Some of the nicer ones aren't keeping their tips worth shit, and the bristles split off into 2-4 bunches. Given that these aren't shit brushes, I'm assuming this is all my fault. I'm cleaning them off after use before they can dry out, and I'm not storing them sitting on their tips. Any thoughts/links?

Also, all my brushes that do keep their bristles together seem to all bend slightly at the end in a curve. how's that happening?
>>
>>47930628
i think you could be imprinting too much strenght on your brush, when putting colour on the palette do a twisting motion, don't splat it around or you will deform the brush. when painting don't do movements like you are drybrushing, never bend the tip, just make it contact the surface without applying any strenght.

Yeah the thing is if they come in transparent resin and you paint the underside white they look kind of glowy. Might be a cooler effect on the bases.
The whole painting the glue contacts white before assembly thing works on the regular models as well btw.

If you ever were to do necrons to fit with that scheme and were thinking about swapping their transparent rods to a different color you can get the right sizes from Plastruct in the corresponding colors.

Use glazes. First layer should be the furthest out from the light source, with each successive layer staying just a little bit closer, with the brightest color right next to the light source. Don't forget to make the model's base color brighter than the rest of the base in that area to simulate the lighting. Not too bright, just enough to notice.

Watched them tool around with it and bought a 400ml can at 7 bucks to test it out. They also make a primer but they were out, so I will be conducted the rub, scratch, drag test with their base coat of white acrylic.

>all that NMM
>Savage Orc Anon

Yeah right, quit riding that guy's clit. Her work is like 90% pop and contrast.
>>
>>47933283

Looks really nice but there's a big ugly crack across the top hatch on the turret.
>>
>>47933623

That can will kill your lungs and models. I recommended a turquoise can from that brand as they were the only acrylic company to make sprays of turquoise for some guys' SoH and he said it was terrible. Splattered his whole room with green mist and drowned his models.

Montana cans are for walls and graffiti only, not delicate miniatures.
>>
>>47933655

That's because the hatch opens up like two doors.
>>
>>47932643

That's because AP has two yellows. One dark one light.
>>
>>47930957

That black armor highlighting is awesome. How did you do it? Drybrush and wash?

Everything about this model looks great. Only thing I think could be improved is the head has a very large jaw sculpt and the red skin could use some highlighting like the rest of the model. The base rim, basing material, weapon, and non-skin parts of the model all look great.
>>
>>47933689
I will post my own findings here anon.
>>
>>47933724
ah , sorry i forgot to write it, i meant demonic yellow and googling it i have found a wide array of colours, as normal when googling colours.
>>

Daemonic Yellow is darker and less yellow and bright than Flash Gitz Yellow. It's still yellow but it leans more towards ochre whereas Flash Gitz is like blinding yellow.

Due to the fact they allow you to choose how wide or stream of a spray you want when you purchase the can, im going to try and get a shop in colorado to ship a can of the white plastic primer to me so it will be there when i get home, this way i can compare the two and really see if there are any particular differences in them. Also while the other anon says it will "kill your lungs", majority of the videos shown show artists using it without masks, or just using a simple hospital masks due to them being so close to the painting they are using. They also apparently have an arrange of effects such as granite texture and crackle. But, as i said, i will do an indepth analysis for my favorite board. If things come out well, this will be a huge boon to a citadel alternative that doesnt have the messy spray of the usual cans. Ive been using the x2 primer and im just about fed up with how bad it spits. The fact you can choose what kind of spray nozzle you want is an interesting factor.

So I finally got around to painting a bunch of models I had primed, and I noticed dust had built up on them.

I haven't been painting for very long, but I have a question for you guys:
When I drybrush my minis, the result comes off very rough. I use drybrushing to go over the tops of details, but it always ends up looking really rough up close. Is there any way to fix this? I'm trying to get a smoother texture on the soft carapace of termagants at the moment.
>>
>>47936828
Thin your paints and use less, you're using too much paint right now it looks like.

It also could be a product of your primer, and the drybrush is picking up the details.
>>
>>47936635

Rinsing them in the faucet or blowing on them with canned air will work.
>>
>>47936859
My primer is Corax White, and I follow with Nuln Oil shade. Is there a way I can smooth out the primer beforehand?
>>
>>47936828

Drybrushing will always look dusty. The only solution is to use highlights instead of drybrushing, or use a wash to hide the dustiness. This isn't possible with white unless you maybe did some kind of white glaze. But if you were drybrushing light blue on dark blue, you could use a blue wash or glaze to hide the roughness.
>>
>>47936896

Multiple thin dustings of primer.

Finally! Something I know something about!

A white undercoat will give you a brighter, more vibrant red. Even if you start with Mephiston Red, you'll get a much brighter end result. Personally, I prefer the bright Second Edition red (see >>47940381), so I start with Evil Sunz Scarlet, but that's just my own personal preference.

I undercoated some of my older models with Zynolyte Light Gray All-Purpose Spray Primer. It dulls the red, although you might not be able to tell unless you had a white model and a gray model side-by-side.

A black undercoat will ... well, "deepen the shadows" euphemistically puts it lightly. I will say that da GW studio ladz do in fact use a black undercoat and Mephiston Red base coat on a lot of the models in the Sons of Sanguinius painting guide, but honestly, I didn't care for the results when I tried it myself. Just to get up to that Blood Ravens red from Dawn of War (still not the colour I wanted!) took more coats of paint than I'm normally accustomed to.

It depends. I didn't see the need to go back and repaint my models that had the gray primer. There's a difference, but it's not huge.

>Anyways whats a white primer you would recommend if i were to use one?

GW used to make a white spray that was pretty good, but they've changed the name so many times since then and raised the price to $17.00 a can, so I've been looking for cheaper alternatives. I hear Tamiya's white primer is good, but it's $11.00 a can and about half the size of the GW can.

Rust-oleum Painter's Touch 2X is cost-effective, but it goes on a little thick. I'm concerned, though, that I *may* be losing detail by using it, especially if I use it on older metal models where the detail wasn't that sharp to begin with.

I also just tried Rust-oleum Universal Bonding Primer. This looks very promising - nice and thin! - and is much cheaper than the GW variety, but I have yet to actually try putting paint on it.

Also, should I do a force weapon nmm on the blade or a normal metallic one? I got a lot of blue on the model so I'm unsure, the banners gonna be mainly blue as well

Are you going to paint the gems a different colour, or leave them as blue "nodules"?

Also... seems like the sunken areas in between the plates could be darker. Have any Nuln Oil or Drakenhof Nightshade?

The idea is to have a more "Solid Shadow" kind of look, rather than pure smoke, so I'm hoping the black will let it seem less substantial.

Still, what you've got is more or less exactly what I'm after.

I have zero experience with it. Where would I get it, and can it hold a shape? How expensive is it?
>>

Yeah I just noticed the gems, theyre gonna be silver rims with an actual red gem on them, gonna do that now. thanks for pointing that out
And the sunken areas are actually already washed with drakenhof nightshade, i basecoated calador sky, washed the model drakenhof, then painted the raised bits and plates calador again.
Theyre getting an alatioc blue - teclis - lothern highlight as well

You mean a space marine chaplain with thunder hammer and a standard, right?

I thin my paints with medium and such, I believe I thin it enough, but fuck me, I still have brushmarks. What other reasons can explain that? Too much paint on the brush?

Are you perhaps coming back to paint a second or subsequent coat on an area while the previous coat is in that sticky half-dried state?
