Shinobi Quest #17
This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.
(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime and her team began the process of taking out the bandits plaguing Reisui Village and the Land of Hot Springs at large. After a somewhat embarrassing first showing in combat, Tsuki reaffirmed to herself her commitment to be shinobi. The teams split up, and began systematically dismantling the bandit hideout. Guy-sensei was left behind to guard the entrance from any returning patrols, and the remainder headed in. Halfway through the complex, the team split up to handle two groups of enemies, with Sasuke, Nori, Hinata, Sakura, and a Tsuki clone armed with a kunai launcher headed towards the larger group, and Itachi-sensei, Lee, and Tsuki herself heading towards the smaller group of three enemies- ones that had chakra signatures.
Itachi’s fears were confirmed when the small group reached the lowest layers of the hideout- Samurai. By using a diversion tactic with Lee, Tsuki and Itachi were able to take out the samurai with a student-teacher double Great Fireball Technique. Proceeding inside the last room, they found both Reisui’s captured mayor, and the leader of the bandits- a horned samurai in blue-tinted armor, wielding two chakra-infused katana....
Itachi pushes through the double doors, into a large room- filled with bunks, crates, and food, with a desk on the far end, covered in maps. A man sits at the desk, with similar armor as the others- although his armor has a horned helmet, and a fine blue sheen you recognize from somewhere…
You also see the mayor, bound and gagged, over to one side.
The man stands up, donning his helmet, and draws two blades, which immediately flicker awake with chakra.
“So, they finally sent someone after me? Near-sighted fools! Very well then, intruders, have at thee!”
You have no idea what he’s talking about.
However, as this is happening, a familiar sensation pricks the back your mind.
The feeling of your clone’s chakra returning….

The memories play back in your mind-
The sound of heavy machinery roars in the distance- and the sound of heavy launcher fire. You look around to see a few corpses about- all enemies, thankfully. On the far side of the room, separated by a bridge, are 10 bandits, 9 of which wielding kunai launchers, keeping suppressing fire on your group. One of them is behind some sort of bunker, with a larger, floor mounted launcher of some kind- the source of all the noise.
It begins to become louder, firing off hundreds of shots, possibly through some sort of feeding mechanism you cannot see. Your group of five is pinned down- you volunteer to go back for either Itachi or Guy, and the others nod. Waiting for a lull within the fire, you bolt- only for the roar to come again. You try to outrun it, but cannot seem to manage. Your clone’s last thought is being pierced by several small launcher-sized kunai.
“The others are in trouble, sensei.” you report, fighting off the memory daze.
“Tch. Well, we cannot just leave this one untended. How bad is it?” he responds while eying the enemy leader.
“Bad enough that they are trapped if we don’t help them.” you utter.

Naruto is at it's best when it deals with political intrigue and murder and assassination happen all the time in a world like this- at the end of the day, they are child soldiers being trained to be elite warriors.
At least, that's what I think. If you want straight shonen with no violence and the ability for everything to end in sunshine and rainbows, this quest probably isn't for you. I like to think I keep the darker moments contrasted with the lighter ones and humor.

“Yes, although crow-clones, unlike shadow clones, don’t really have a mind of their own. I’ll need to have it guide him. It shouldn’t provide too much of a distraction…” he answers.
He quickly throws up the signs for what you assume is his crow clone technique- his shadow quickly elongates, and from it, a large black bird bursts forth.
The bird wastes no time, flying up the passageway, back towards the fork.
“If you little shinobi are done with your meeting, I suggest we get back to matters at hand.” the samurai’s raspy, somewhat tinny voice coming through his rebreather.
“You face Yojimbo! Former Kenin of the Land of Iron! You dishonorable shinobi will fall to my blades!”
He assumes a battle stance you aren’t familiar with- and you can tell Itachi is focused on guiding the clone, at least subconsciously.

The three of you move as one unit, trying to stay at range. You try taking a few shots, and Lee throws a few kunai in conjunction- but Yojimbo simply deflects them with his blades.
“Cowardly shinobi! Too afraid to face me in close combat? This is why the Samurai is superior! Mifune and the others are fools!” Yojimbo yells, taunting you.
“Fine! Don’t think my skills are limited to personal combat! Sabre Technique! Flash!”
Yojimbo cuts the air in a broad x shape- firing large crescents of chakra at you!

I personally like 3d10 with a dc. If all three in one roll are over dc, it's a crit. if only 2 are over it's a pass. Only 1 of 3 over is a failure and the crit fail on noNE of the 3 are over. Still only take best of 3 or 5 or whatever. I know some people don't like it.
I've been trying to think of a way of working something like Fantasy flight's star wars thematic dice in. Best I can say is if 3 or or more first 5 rolls are in ascending order, there is some saving grace even if none pass the roll. Say the DC is 40 but we only roll 2, 14, 33 in a row. It would fail the check but something would happen to help in a later roll or give hints to a better way to go. I dunno, just saying shit.

“Sabre Technique: Rupture!” he shouts, following with a vertical slice. A single blade of chakra flies towards you, with you and Itachi dodging forward just in time.

He keeps firing them off in what almost seems like a dance. You have to keep moving to avoid them, making getting in attack difficult. In this distance, you can see Lee trying to ponder his next move, as his ranged attacks have proved ineffective.
Itachi is more than self sufficient, but you can see he’s still guiding the clone. He’s dodging these attacks with his eyes closed.
Blows are being rained down upon you from a distance. How should you proceed?
1. Just try to keep distracting him until Itachi-sensei is finished.
2. Try to attack him with a Technique (Dragon Bullet or Great Fireball)
3. Try a technique whilst Lee distracts him.
4. Have Lee engage. (Pick another option with this)

I'm quite partial to 3d6 with circumstantial bonuses and penalties. It means the rolls tend towards the average, and bonuses for good/poor conditions or for using a technique/tactic that we're particularly good at make a big difference. A +1 or +2 bonus in situations like that makes a way bigger difference than it would rolling a d100 or even a d20.

Yojimbo, however, just laughs. The attack dissipates, his armor glowing brighter blue as you continue the stream of fire.
“Behold progress, Shinobi! This armor renders me immune to your pesky magics! Hahaha!” he gloats, even stopping his attack to do so.

Chakra Armor. You doubt your father made it, but you don’t doubt that it’s probably a derivative of his designs….. And you know what their weakness is.
The cannot take large concentrated bursts of chakra- a high enough powered attack will overload the armor, and either destroy it outright, or render it vulnerable to conventional attacks.
You know Lee cannot do anything powerful enough to do so, but Itachi-sensei might.
There’s also your ace in the hole…. The Stellar Release.

While he gloats, you turn to Itachi-sensei.
“Sensei! I need you! I know how to beat him! His armor renders him immune to lower powered techniques, but a powerful technique should disable it- or destroy it entirely!” you say, shaking him awake.
His eyes snap open-
“I heard you! Hopefully Guy can make it the rest of the way without me…” he mutters, turning to look at the Samurai.
“Oho, the teacher wakes! Your students are to weak, shinobi! Come then! Let me show them how inferior shinobi are to the samurai!
“Sabre Art! Flash!” he shouts, firing off the same x-shaped projectile as before. You dodge out of the way with ease, given your speed, and how it was primarily aimed at Itachi-sensei.
You turn to look at him, only to notice he’s high above where the attack would’ve landed. His sharingan have activated….
“Mass Shadow Clone Jutsu!” Itachi shouts, making a series of hand signs.
The air above the samurai fills with Itachi-clones! As they fall towards the Samurai, you hear him laugh. “Mere clones aren’t enough! I’ll cut through them like paper!”
“Great Clone Explosion Technique.” Itachi says, this time at a much lower volume.
“Lee! Get down!” you yell from across the room.
As Yojimbo strikes the first clone, it detonates. It’s detonation triggers another, and another…
The chain explosions rock the room you’re in- although it’s hard to tell just how badly. The explosions ring throughout the chamber- it’s hard to see or hear anything…
As once they cease, and the dust clears, you see a few things. Itachi-sensei is slumped over, near where the major is. His outfit is charred, but it looks like the mayor is ok.
Lee gets up and shouts, covered in soot and ash. “Woooaaaah! That was insane! I’ve never seen anything like that!”
Good to know he’s ok.
Yojimbo is collapsed in the middle of the room- he’s severely burned, and his armor looks to have all but evaporated.

“Lee! Check on Itachi-sensei! I’m going take a look at this guy…” you order, walking over to Yojimbo’s prone body.
You see Lee make haste over to where Itachi and the Mayor are.
Looking down, you get your first glimpse of what the man known as Yojimbo actually looked like; long grey hair and stubble on his face, partially burned off by the intensity of the attack. Bit and pieces of his armor lay strewn about, likely blown away during the explosions. His body is covered in severe burns- his arms almost entirely blackened.
“S-shinobi…” he sputters, his eyes staring blankly towards the ceiling.
“Mifune was right, after all. We’ll forever be at the whim of you damn shinobi… Normal people cannot hope to compete. Hah….”
His eyes focus on you, now looking down at him.
“I’ll be waiting for you all… in hell…. Shi.. no…..bi………”
His head falls to one side- his body, limp and immobile.
You’re no medical-nin, but he has to be dead.
“Tsuki-chan! Itachi is ok! He’s just-”
“I’m fine, Lee.” Itachi says, shaking free of Lee’s shoulder.
“Even for someone like me, using that technique is dangerous. I had to limit the number clones as not to burn through all of my chakra- and still have enough to detonate them.”

You run and hug Itachi. You didn’t really think about it, but…
He stiffens a bit, as either he was sore, or was just surprised.
Suddenly, you realize what you’re doing- you jump backwards, blushing a brighter red than Nori’s mother’s hair.
“S-sorry Sensei- I was just- I’m happy that-” you stumble over your words.
A finger pokes you square in the head- and stays there.
“Ow!” you mumble.
“Thank you, Tsuki. I didn’t mean to worry you like that. I’ll have to try harder from now on not to make you worry.” he says, a small smile on his face.
Damn him. Damn him!
“Hmph. I cannot lose two sensei, what would people say? They’d think we were cursed!” you huff.
“Oh, and the samurai is dead. Yojimbo, he said his name was.”
“Yojimbo. A samurai from the Land of Iron. New foes show themselves all the time, it seems…” he says, the smile gone.
Lee, meanwhile, unties the major.
She slowly rises, and dusts herself off.
“Well that was quite the show- but I’m glad everyone’s alright. If it’s alright with you Leaf shinobi, these old bones are quite tired… is there anything else you need to do?”
“We need to check on the others- hopefully Guy was able to take care of it” Itachi says in a serious tone.
As you’re leaving, you take a look around. The weapons of the other Samurai are still outside the door. Do you take them?

It's not really murder-hobo-ing if it's our mission.
Looting~
You take a few moments to free the scabbards from the armor, and take the two blades. Might be useful, and you know they conduct chakra.
The party heads back to the fork, where you run into Guy, accompanied by the rest of the team. They all look a little worse for wear- tears in the uniform, cuts in several places. You can tell Nori took a particularly nasty shot to the shoulder, although it seems to be bandaged for now.
As both parties meet, a wave of relief seems to wash over everyone.
“Shame of you to disappear on me like that, Itachi. Took me longer to figure out where I was needed! Turned out alright, in the end, though! Haha!” Guy says, throwing up his trademark smile.
Sasuke and Sakura just sigh and shake their heads. Looking closely, you can see the Guy took his fair share of shots as well, he’s just not letting them affect him- or putting up a front.
The entire group heads back outside to the entrance, and are greeted by a few more bodies than before.
“A patrol was returning- not many, and they really wanted a fight!” Guy says exuberantly.
A short while later, you all take your seats in the mayor’s home- relatively bare, as it was just sacked, but enough remains to rest in, for the time being.
Itachi and Guy are discussing things with the Mayor, so you just take a moment to relax. The mission is over- and maybe you’ll get to stay in those hot springs on the way back, like was promised. That would be nice….
