Warhammer 40k is currently in it's 7th edition. Are you sure you have the 7th edition codex and not 6th edition? They have the exact same cover. You can tell if its 7th edition if it has a bunch of art featuring red-white Tau whereas 6th featured the traditional tan-brown paint scheme.

Alternatively, the Kauyon book has all of the 7th edition updates to the Tau, so if you don't feel like buying a whole new codex, that might be worth checking out.

5x Vanguard Veterans - 2x Storm Shields, 4x Lightning Claws, 1x Thunder Hammer, Jump Packs 170

5x Tactical Marines - Plasma Gun, Combi-plasma, Razorback 150
10x Tactical Marines - Melta gun, Combi-melta, Drop Pod 195

Was thinking of starting 40k about a year ago and I love Jump Pack infantry so now with the Raven Guard stuff I figured it was a good time to get into the game. This is what I've got so far, coming up to 715pts. What would be good additions to bring it up to around 1000 or 1250pts?

I'm putting together a Scion list, and I'm looking at 4 squads of 10 scions, but I can't decide what's best for a weapon configuration. I'm leaning towards
2x Hot-Shot Volley Guns
2x Grenade Launcher

or maybe
2x Hot Shot Volley Guns
1x Grenade Launcher
1x Melta Gun

Any guard players have a recommendation?

Add Shadow Captain Koryvdae, 5 scouts (snipers with cloaks or bolters depending on how sneaky you want them to be) then start adding squads of 5 assault marines with jump packs and 2 flamers/melta bombs as troops. Korvydae lets you have an all jump army except for the 5 scout tax.

You can also use your assault and vanguard for the various RG formations that let you deep strike and charge on turn one, or leave the board whenever you want, even in the middle of combat, then drop back on in a paradrop line.

Korvydae sounds fun! I'll definitely look into that. I've seen some of the formations but do I need to field a Battle/Pinion Demi Company first to use them, or can I attach a formation to a regular CAD or even field it on its own?
The turn one deep strike and charge with Vanguard Vets sounds amazing.

You can take the RG jump formations outside of the Pinion as standalone formations.

Run two command squads, one with 4 plas one with 4 volleyguns, and then three with either plasma or melta depending on whether you see more 2+ saves or AV. You want more command squads for the pretty good orders the AM has compared to the Guard

1500 points, Coteaz goes with the Purifiers, the Malleus goes with melta acolytes to give them scout, lib and termies drop in somewhere they can assault from, Interceptors try to catch something like dev squads or backfield support and give it a helping of hammer to the tailpipe

Scares me too. But statistically you should get your money's worth out of a plasma gun attached to a stormtrooper. Melta is the "safe" option and works nearly as well in most situations. But your going to have to deal with the range.

Just gonna reiterate what others said to be honest, plasma is most useful overall, melta is great, safe but a bit more specialised and volleys are good when taken en masse to cut down infantry (combine with the order that gives rending). Is the idea to drop them?

Also, grenade launchers are shit, especially on a BS4 platform.

Volley guns on a Command Squad, run plasma on the scions or melta if you want tank busting. Go all out or nothing, don't mix and match weapons on squads.

My command squad is used to give orders and hang back to fire the S4 AP3 volley guns, scions deepstrike in and either shred infantry or take out a light vehicle with meltas, while trying to move towards cover. Scions will make most shootouts if they outnumber or equal the enemy squad size due to the power that hot shot lasguns can have.

Techpriest in the formation sits on the Quadgun, the rest of the artillery bunkers behind the ADL.

Comes to 1717 total, what should I do with the last few points to round it off to 1750? Camo netting?

Defo put Camo netting on that Manticore. It'll be a target with all the damage it puts out.
Put Camo netting on Pasks squadron-mate. You CAN shoot through other models in a unit, so position the squadron-mate to take all the shots.
