newrakul is the best card in modern that allows you to lose the game by wasting 13 fucking mana on a shitty mindslaver

I assume you're not going to accept that it's garbage an you shouldn't be playing this in modern.

The manabase looks awful. Get some shocks and fetches to replace those terrible Choked Estuaries.Sign in blood would probably be better off as Read the Bones even. Also replace the Deprives with Remands. Maybe add Tasigur and Gurmag Angler.

Honestly, just scrap this shit and build a deck that has put up tournament results. There is no way this could ever be considered "viable".
>>
>>47876071
Asshole mana actually makes me upset, every card just needed the line "at least x needs to be paid in colorless mana". No erratas, no new special rules. There's literally no reason why you wouldn't do it that way.
>>
>>47876157

Yes it would. I don't know how budget naya burn even is anymore, but you could probably make a cheaper list that would be alright for a new player.
>>
>>47878607
I was looking at some lists and while I don't mind dishing money for a deck have to pay 300€ of lands alone is pretty annoying, how much of an impact do these dual lands have in modern? I can understand need untapped mana t1 in legacy, but it seems that it could work fine even with taplands in modern.
>>
>>47878913
Burn is a fast deck. It's retarded to do nothing on turn one
>>

I know, but with some tuning chances of having taplands turn 1&2 are slim, turn 3&4 however I would have to play them.

I 4-0 with my list but I've been playing it for awhile.
It has good matchups against creature decks and jund.

Wilted abzan and ad nauseum are it's worst matchups.

Don't run mind stone. You only need 3 moons. Reckoner is boss. Skin invasion is super secret tech.

As a long time Standard player I want to get into modern but I'm really torn about what deck to build.

The pricetag of a competitive deck is so much higher than in Standard that I really just can't decide what to pick. I fear to be desapointed or get bored with my deck after only a few games.

As a Modern veteran, what deck would you advise for someone that looks for a fun yet strong deck requiring some good thinking.

I like Mardu but it's not really high tier... I was thinking maybe Kiki-Chord. Idk, what do you think ?

>>
>>47880914
>Are you alone or do you have a playgroup?

I have a playgroup

>Do you plan to play in sanctioned events?

Only FNM for now.

>What are your favorite Standard decks?

In current Standard I play Sultai Seasons Past but my favourite deck is Green Aurora

>How much are you ready to pay?

Money isn't an issue

>Have you seen some Modern matches before? Paper and/or online, streams, YouTube, etc.

I've spectated some matches at FNMs and seen plenty of videos online, mainly tourneys on WOTC's youtube channel

>>What decks among >>47873745 interest you?

Summoning Trap, Grixis Delvers and Kiki Chord. I also like Mardu which isn't on this list but is very similar to Jund.

>I have a playgroup
If you have a playgroup, then the best advice I can give you is for you and your group to print out a few competitive decks and try stuff. Once you find the deck you like the most, start building it. Try to grab a deck that has staples that go in multiple decks, like Kiki Chord's Noble Hierarch and Restoration Angel.

>Only FNM for now.
FNM level depends on the store. Some local metas are pretty hardcore, and some are fairly easy. Mardu definitely has a fighting chance there.

>In current Standard I play Sultai Seasons Past but my favourite deck is Green Aurora
Based on your Standard preferences, try looking for Devotion Green.
It's around Tier 3, it's an alright deck. Proxy that deck before buying it if it really interests you.

>Money isn't an issue
Money not an issue? That's great. I heavily encourage buying a deck that can easily be transformed into something else if you are bored. Like Kiki Chord becoming an Abzan Company deck, or something. Just because it's not an issue doesn't mean you should spend big whenever you want to build a new deck. Not having to play a budget deck really helps though.

>I've spectated some matches at FNMs and seen plenty of videos online, mainly tourneys on WOTC's youtube channel
Okay, so I assume the format interests you enough for it to be worthwhile. At this point, I suggest you watch Modern streams whenever you can and see if a deck catches your eye so you can try it out before maybe buying it. Also helps make you a better player, as commentary usually explains why a play is more optimal than another.

>Summoning Trap, Grixis Delvers and Kiki Chord. I also like Mardu which isn't on this list but is very similar to Jund.
Kiki Chord is probably the strongest in that list. Mardu is also good, it's just an awkward Jund and Jeskai hybrid though. Consider proxying both of these decks before trying Mardu out.

TL;DR print whole decks and play

Can anyone rate this budget creatureless UW deck based off of Floch's Azorius deck? I've been playing around with it all weekend, trying to keep the main deck below $100, but I don't know if what's ended up is playable.

4x Azorius Charm
4x Condescend
1x Elixir of Immortality
2x Elspeth, Sun's Champion
4x Flooded Strand
5x Island
2x Jace, Architect of Thought
3x Mana Leak
4x Meandering River
2x Path to Exile
4x Plains
4x Quicken
2x Spell Snare
2x Sphinx's Revelation
2x Spreading Seas
2x Supreme Verdict
4x Temple of Enlightenment
3x Think Twice
4x Tranquil Cove
2x Wrath of God

Sideboard :
2x Celestial Purge
2x Disenchant
2x Dispel
1x Jace, Memory Adept
2x Negate
2x Path to Exile
2x Planar Cleansing
2x Syncopate

Any suggestions/advice?

dont be a dumbass, by the time you would even be able to play newrakul, you could prob play it for 9/10 mana and thats atleast a couple turns in.
>play new emmy for 10 mana
>take control of opponents turn
>look at hand
>use all the spells
>attack with their creatures (by this time, you should atleast have some board presence with creatures)
>block with your creatures and emmy
>your turn rolls around
>attack with emmy and others

you prob played all their spells, and if not, you know whats in their hand.
but if you did, they are top decking for their next 2 turns and cant do shit cuz you still have a 13/13

The only deck that could possibly cast newrakul in modern is Tron and I think they have better options. Ulamog seems like a more consistent game winner and if you're gonna play a wincon that costs more than that you might as well play old emrakul.

100% total casual here, but I think I've found out an interesting combo.

Use creatures that exile things as long as they are in play, process the things in exile, and then flicker to exile more things and/or process more things.

Has anyone else dabbled in this concept? I feel like this idea could really flourish with the proper person building and playing a deck.
>>
>>47885809
Check out Eldrazi Taxes. The deck is very, very similar and it has legs.

>>47885897
Thank you for the information, I guess the big problem with the deck I whipped up was how it only focused on that one combo and nothing else.

I'm not entirely certain what you mean when you say it "has legs" though.

So I'd like to get back into MtG, but how should I progress?

So I can't decide between running read the bones and pieces of the puzzle in this. Each of them have their upsides, but i'm leaning more towards read the bones. Your meta sounds fuckin' swell. I myself am brewing all sorts of dank memedecks. I play Esper Spirits tribal, Gitrog Loam Dredgevine and a Bant Planeswalker / Enchantment based deck named Oathkeepers after the Oath cycle in OGW.

That said, to survive in the meme jungle of the meme meta, you gotta single out the alpha memes, the ones that consistently top at FNM. Those are the ones you are most likely to go against at later rounds if you win your matches.

Its also important to sideboard specifically for the decks yours is at a disadvantage with, doubly so if they are dominant too. You don't sideboard for the decks your deck can take on by itself after all.

It's important to have a failsafe in your sideboard that constitutes a general answer to a variety of threats. Since I don't have to worry about neither control nor aggro I have a couple answers for Affinity, Lantern Control and Tron specifically and answers to combo and midrange in particular.

So yeah, it's neither approach, but a mix of both.

Noob question here.

Was this card ever experimented on in Jund/Abzan/Mardu to replace bob ?
Decent effect as you often end up empty handed with these decks and you can pitch it to Lili plus ability.

As anyone tried it ? Also, what do you think of Madness cards in general in decks that run Lili ?

>>47894669

>>
>>47894554
More situational than bob. Asylum visitor makes you loose 1 life no matter if what and jund is pretty low to the ground so the it's not really better than bob in any way.
>>
>>47882100

I know you are on a budget list here but you should at least consider getting a full playset of Collonades. You NEED more win conditions.

Generally speaking, trying to build UW control on a budget usually ends up doing horribly wrong.

Also, Quicken and Spell Snare are really odd in this deck and feel completely out of place. You should replace them with more counterspells and/or card draw. You also want to drop two condescend and run the full playset of Paths mainboard.

As for your sideboard, you need graveyard hate badly. Tormod Crypt is a good card if you are in a tight budget. You might also want a couple Stony Silence but these are expensive. You might want to try Kataki instead but he doesn't fit your deck very much.

As someone who plays modern casually with friends but /might/ play fnm at a shop is it worth it looking into a tournament-tier deck? I feel like I would get decimated by my friends if they weren't playing tournament style decks too.

Why is Liliana considered so good in Jund ? Her +1 is awkward to use and while her -2 is good, if your opponent is playing a deck that goes wide it's gonna be unimpactful at best.

Am I missing something here ? why is she so good ?

>>
>>47894473
>all the draw go players I ever met acted like assholes with superiority complex.
It's not their fault that you're so inferior.
>>
>>47897280
It's very easy to take control of the game with her and a few other discard spells eating the opponents hand. Slam a goyf and activate your raging ravine when she's on the field and you've pretty much got the game
>>
>>47897488
But you are hitting yourself too in the process, so you don't generate any advantage throught this.

I get that if she is left unharmed you threaten to ult her but this is a painfully slow process for a format that quick and it requires you to allready be ahead.

Most importantly, why don't Jund runs cards that would benefit from being discarded if it runs 3 or even 4 copies of Lili ? Isn't it a missed opportunity to generate a beneficial use of Lili's discard ability. Thinking of cards with flashback or stuff like Squee, Goblin Nabob.

that's exactly the point of jund, destroy board presence and hand with 1 on 1 trades, lili costs little and lets you do that while your opponent is stuck trying to kill her because nobody can ignore her, unless they are playing combo and win in the next turn.Jund is very redunant and you just need to keep trading until you have the edge.

2 Planeswalkers:
2 Nahiri

9 Creatures:
4 young Pyro
2 kalitas
1 Emrakul aeons torn
2 tasigur

30 Spells:
4 Lingering
4 path
2 helix
2 Thoughtseize
4 inquisition
4 bolt
2 terminate
4 looting
4 crackling doom

19 Lands:
2 blood crypt
2 godless shrine
2 Sacred Foundry
4 wooded foothills*
4 bloodstained mire
1 planes
1 swamp
1 shambling vents
1 Lavaclaw reaches
1 vault of the archangel
*(foothills cause I don't have money for arid mesa yet)

10 Sideboard:
2 wrath of god
2 solfire grand master
4 molten rain
1 grafdigger cage
1 torpor orb

Your main wincon is a 2-of, and the only way you have to defend her is chumping with Peezy or hoping you have enough Paths for any given Tarmogoyf or x/4.

When a creature that doesn't die to Bolt can lock you out in a format where good creatures have to not die to Bolt, you aren't in a good spot.

Also lol at 4 4-drops, 2 Tasigurs, and 4 Souls in a 19 land deck.

Abzan didn't always. In the times when it didn't, it still ran Vault + Township. Like nigger it's TWO colourless land. The deck shouldn't be running 4 Crackling Dooms in the first place. Nothing else is tough enough on your mana for it to matter. If you only have 2 land you're up shit creek anyway.

Clearly we both play in different metas. I will admit you have some strong points but for the most part you are gay and wrong.

Tassigur is a dope play for 1 mana and delve. Kalitas makes tokens and buffs himself. Nahiri also let's me draw cards. It's not just about dropping the spaghetti, but it's a nice fall back plan if someone leaves me alone.
>>
>>47899637

>>47901032
The real question is whether or not Modern wants a card like this. We're not concerned with balance anymore in Modern; Modern has Bolt, Thoughtseize, and Path to Exile - it's already at high power level.

Your card itself is just a value card. You might as well be asking if Modern needs Brainstorm or whether Preordain should be unbanned as they, like your card, are just outright value cards. In that way it's no different than Lightning Bolt or Thoughtseize.

Ultimately, Modern doesn't want your card and I say that because if it's good enough it's only going to make something better instead of making something new. Because Modern's problems aren't going to be solved by introducing outright good cards like Jace Mind Sculptor or Swords to Plowshares or even Wasteland.
>>
>>47899306
>There's this guy that brings a wooden abacus. Real fancy.

>>
>>47901473

>>
>>47900178
I didnt see the Terminates, but it's still a pretty thin plan when you're getting grinded out and have nothing to realistically stick on the board, or are getting flooded and can't crack back.

Also top fucking kek at 4 Cracking Doom and 4 Lingering Souls in a 19 land deck. Kommand too much value for you?

>>47900273
>Tassigur is a dope play for 1 mana and delve. Kalitas makes tokens and buffs himself.
Tasigur is very rarely straight 1 mana, and if he is, he's probably not enough to come back considering you cant use his ability in Mardu. You're better off with Gurmag, at least he threatens Goyfs usually.

Kalitas and Nahiri are hilarious. You don't have enough land to reliably hit Kalitas, let alone land him on curve. Kalitas is only strong if you can use him on the back of removal to cinch tempo and crack back, which you aren't doing on 19 lands.

Just you mentioning Kalitas' sac ability makes me think you don't know what you're doing, I don't think Ive ever seen that used outside of Standard. Even Jund's mana is too constrained for reliable use of it, and Jund runs 24.

Not him but you should focus your gameplan and pick what kind of deck you want to play. If you're on the nahiri plan, you should play 4 nahiri's and play more lands and cards like painful truths for card advantage.. If you're playing tokens, you should play low to the ground with dark confidant and monastery mentor. Faithless looting is a bad card that you shouldn't play and crackling doom is a 2 of at most.

Bloodstained mire and marsh flats should be your fetches because you want swamp turn 1 for inquisition. Your sideboard needs tons of work, look at the good white sideboard cards like Stony Silence, RIP, Timely Reinforcements, and Ghostly prison.

>>47901064
This box is 800 dollars.

Basically what im going to do is buy boxes and put the cards i get in a binder for now, 1 binder per set. A lot of the appeal to MTG for me is collecting so opening boxes and putting the cards away is fun, I am trying to learn to play as well.
>>
>>47873809
Except Mindslaver costs 10 to cast and activate, whereas this card can easily cost under 10, and it also nets you a 13/13 flying trample creature that allows you to kill at least one of their creatures (swing into him during their turn), he can't be hit by Swords or Path or virtually every other good removal spell in any eternal format, and his total cost can go down to, what? 6? Easily can be a one of in any slow modern deck as an ezpz win con.

>thinking this card is bad because its not the best card ever
>>
>>47906245
You're literally wasting your money. Literally every single card you unpack save maybe 1 in an entire box is going to be completely worthless.

Get lots of format staples if you absolutely have to fill binders with shit. Binder bulk does absolutely nothing but waste people's time looking through it and showcase that you make bad financial decisions.
>>
>>47906438
This. I'm like this. Bought 2 boxes of inistrad. Ended up with 5 pretty confident decks. 2 of which are easily competitive. A at human deck and a rb madness deck. I'm tempted to buy another box as I'll probably complete the other decks too.
I'll be doing the same for eldritch moon too. It's not about having a show case of cards for me but decks. I like deck building and having multiple decks to play with just for fun.
>>
Anyone here playing time walk.dec? Mono blue or white blue?
>>
>>47906626
You could have bought those decks for literally 1/4th of the price if you had just ordered the singles you wanted.
>>
>>47906438
Playing magic to make money is a poor financial decision in general dude, I just want to collect cards and learn a game, opening packs and boxes is fun even tho it is not the most efficient way of getting cards and building a competitive deck. Also the people I play with are happy to look through collections.
It seems that you and I have a completely different mind set on collectible trading card games, I appreciate the feedback tho.

Probably not since they won't have any money cards. I know a couple years back some people figured out a pattern on which pack in a booster box contains what card.
