The flavor is solid, actually. It's an eldritch horror from beyond space and time. Everyone's just upset because said eldritch horror has been established as something that is easily dealt with and very much understandable, as shown in the previous block.

I think it still would have been fine if kozilek just never got involved in the last block. Ulamog alone took all the gatewatch had to deal with, nearly gave nissa an aneurism and was a horrible experience all around, now there are two more, what could possibly be the toll of each of them?? would be a worthwhile setup. eldrazi can be dealt with, but jesus christ the cost. the fact that the gatewatch got a twofer on short notice is what hugely diminished them IMO.

Then, when the time comes to face the phyrexians, they planeswalk the moon with Emrakul in it (since silver can be sent across planes), and crack it open to force a phyrexian vs eldrazi ultimatum.
Then the phyrexians, failing to defeat emrakul, instead complete the silver moon, turning it into a giant, dripping lunar sphere of oil, and use it to escape the doomed new phyrexia while searching for another world to compleat.

Originally, all the Eldrazi had annihilator. In BfZ, the approaach they took was to make each Titan unique. Annihilator became Ulamogs gimmick, Kozilek undoes the laws of physics with some mind control and gravity powers, and Emrakul warps the minds and bodies of everything around her and can speed up or slow down time.
Its hardly the most egregious retcon wizards has ever made.

Lovecraft's work was built off the framework of gothic horror anyway.
The whole thing about cosmic horror is that it's the natural evolution of gothic. You peel away the taboos in favor of stuff that defies scientific thought, going from tangible horrors that delight and entice to abstractions that birth fear and paranoia out of the inability to fathom how and why something is what it is.
And really, it's a lot better than taking a Lovecraftian dump on the adventure plane like ROE did. If there were any place that would've done better justice to an Eldrazi debut, it would in fact be Innistrad.

they were kinda neat, very splashy, devisive, a lot of people DID NOT like anihilator. the set was a sharp right from the rest of zendikar which some people didn't like. the limited environment a lot of enfranchised players liked because it was very rewarding of skill, but it was also turned normal limited on its head. all in all the eldrazi mostly didn't go over very well, they were too radically different from everything else and couldn't find purhase. a lot of problems with BfZ block is from drawing from RoE mechanically and flavorfully when zen and worldwake were the sets that people wanted to see again.

In the abstract, the Eldrazi were cool, but I was hella buttmad that they dropped landfall gimmicks and YOU ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD and allies with ally synergies in favor of battlecruiser magic featuring impractical to cast ultrafatties.
There were some nice cards in the set but it was so much NOT MUH ZENDIKAR that I consider it set one of BFZ rather than set 3 of ZEN.
Mostly though, no more YOU ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD. Traps were really cool designwise.
