What are the more sexually erotic types of infection that would actually be appealing to someone that has been living on Mars for 20 years and isn't an exsurgent?
>>
>>47869733
I hope one day the people who got together to write Eclipse Phase see this question and realise what they've done; the logical conclusion to everything they have done leads to a group of strangers on an anonymous image board discussing sexually erotic infections on Mars.
>>

No. I'd like a few more books for Eclipse Phase to come out before they're completely demoralised and disillusioned by the horrors they've unleashed.
>>
>>47869895
So you're going to wait 5 years?
>>
>>47869920
It makes me wonder how dated the game will seem in five years time really. Eclipse Phase was released in 2009, so it's almost seven years old already. How long will it be before the technology seems weird and kind of dated?

In five years time, or ten years time, will we be chuckling about how Eclipse Phase didn't predict the rise and eventual ubiquity of certain bits of technology? Will we be looking back at this in the same way we look at, say, the old Cyberpunk 2020 RPG, I wonder.
>>
>>47867170

>>47868225

>>
>>47870631
>On the other hand Eclipse Phase technology is magic and can do pretty much anything.

I was thinking more along the lines of, let's say, what if something came along and challenged successfully the smartphone model? If the Internet-of-Things doesn't really take off? If 3D printing is relegated to the history books as a non-starter? The predictions that Eclipse Phase makes about the trajectory of consumer technology seems like a fairly safe bet, but I presume that the writers of early cyberpunk fiction considered that wires and tape-drives were future-proof safe-bets too. Oh, and mohawks.

>What happened there?
Consumer technology moved in a direction that the game didn't, so it seems kind of dated. You've got fancy pocket calculators, pocket televisions and digital audio recorders that are "the size of two paperback books stacked flat". A modern science fiction game is more likely to go "you've got some sort of personal, portable computer that can do all these things", because that's pretty much where we are at these days.

I guess it's the problem with all science fiction stuff really - you've got to ground it in modern day of the time of writing so it's generally accessible, and extrapolate from there. Just wonder how long it'll take for Eclipse Phase to get to the point where we look at it and go "why would anyone bother with nanofabrication when we've got plumbuses?".

not really. Also that's unfappable even for airplane porn.
>>
>>47873923
It's particularly noticeable in cyberpunk because the setting deals mostly with the near future. After thirty years of reading about how this or that technology or social trend is just ten years away you begin to get a bit sceptical about the predictive skills of writers.

Looking back at the various editions of Shadowrun is pretty illuminating as to how our attitude to technology has changed. In first edition computers are mysterious and a bit scary and only for use by specialists. Even the simple act of making a phone call could require a side adventure to locate a working pay phone. By the 4th edition deckers were barely a thing and everyone could use their comlinks to wirelessly hack anything.

I wonder what disruptive technology will be making our games look dated in another 20 years
>>
>>47873923
Hardened-against-emp electronics would be a great excuse for everything being so bulky, and also why you need a separate device for everything. Like the bulky, eighties-ish devices in Alien Isolation. Keep that in mind for more classical interpretations of cyberpunk, and as an excuse to run your Eclipse Phase game with such anachronisms.

>The problem with that in Eclipse Phase is that basically everything is already really EMP hardened.
Except the way that they hardened them was by using the words "optical computing" and "Faraday cages" like they're fucking magic.
>>
>>47882365
when it comes to EMPs yeah a fucking faraday cage is pretty much all you need and you're safe.
>>
>>47882420
Please tell me how you're supposed to have your components protected by Faraday cages while you're also using wireless energy transfer and are constantly connected to the mesh.
>>
>>47876920
That's fucking disgusting.
>>
>>47882484
To be fair, it does say that EMP will burn out your antennas
>>
>>47883830
It says nothing about how batteries and laser emitters and sensors are shielded. Anyway, shielding from EM is dependent on the intensity. To shield against higher intensities, you need thicker conductors, which adds weight and bulk. Ectos, for example, would be completely fucked by an EMP grenade, since there's no way that something that thin could be adequately shielded.

>and as an excuse to run your Eclipse Phase game with such anachronisms

While it'd involve mutilating the timeline of the game a fair bit, I'd want to run a game where players chase down a drifting, derelict ship laden with anachronistic technology, and the subsequent hunt for someone with the knowledge of how to successfully recover the data from the old tape drives on board. Failing that, I suppose, it could just be run as a simulation for training purposes, or something. Good old simulations, enabling holodeck-episode style breaks from your regular campaign of finding exsurgents, working out where their faces are and then trying to shoot them in it.

one of my players has an idea for a character [which would be played by two characters]

one is a tinker/infiltration type. good with her hands, skilled and so on

the other is a disembodied AI which fucks shit up digitally. sorta djinni style.

She suggested having a small, robotic body which the usually disembodied form utilizes. What'd be a good shape to use? is there a cat or raven body which i haven't seen?
>>
>>47892591
Why is this one character? This is just two characters, one of whom uses the ghostrider of the other a fair amount.

If you want a fancy cat-like body, a Wobblycat from Firewall is pretty primo. There's also the Blackbird, a *really* stealthy robo-raven.

Quick question: Does the synthmorph vector thrust mobility option allow me to navigate in vacuum or do I need an EVA pack for that? The book mentions rotorfans or something and that sounds like it needs air around it...not looking for rocket boosters, just sort of maneuvering jets.
>>
>>47894247

It sounds like it needs atmosphere, but at the same time many systems like Ionic and Rotorcraft explictly say they do not work in vacuum. I feel like it'd be weird for them to be no vacuum-possible mobility systems in the core book, but worst comes to worst, you can probably install the Gas Jet System (I think that's in sunward) on a synthmorph.
>>
>>47894247
If you just need maneuvering jets, there's the gas jet system which definitely works in space. Thrust Vector is kind of ambiguous, but probably doesn't.
>>
>>47893431
I still don't see how that makes them somehow single concept. There's one guy with a ghostrider module, and then there's a different guy who lives in other guys ghostrider module. This is literally what 99% of infolife characters do if there's no mesh or it's compromised, unless they get a portable server for more horsepower.

_Every_ player coordinating their character concepts together has been the default in all my groups.

Sci-fi tends to underestimate the potency and ubiquity of a technology, or elsewise predict obvious nonsense or fail to predict something.

It's most likely that all the technologies EP features will come to pass, and become as common as personal computers. 'The dream' will be killed by social and legal regulation, not technical infeasibility.

Which is the striking issue that EP brings up. When social and legal regulation can no longer keep nuclear bombs out of the hands of terrorists, you either turn into a police state or ISIS. We can talk about peaceful anarchist communities all we want, but the truth is that the anarchists function because every one of them is devoted to making it work and agrees with the general ideology of anarchism.

EP depicts what might happen to our Earth - apocalypse brought upon us by street-corner WMD's. The few who surive in space are the rich or the technical people who serve them - few are scum, some of whom founded a colony on an exoplanet where rape and murder is legal.

EP depicts a frighteningly possible world - a world we know is possible because it was our past. A world of slavery, prostitution, drug use, elitism, gang warfare, tribalism, child labor, pedophila, terrorism, and apocalyptic cults who think the TITANs are going to come finish the job any day now.

Ultimately though I think the setting is a hopeful one. Yes the worst happened, the world ended but transhumanity lives on. Greed, complacency, bigotry and all the other problems that caused the Fall still remain but people still fight against them.
New societies spring up in amazing diversity united in their determination not to repeat the past. Explores step beyond the solar system to find wonders and terrors in equal measure.
Yes the future is frightening.
Yes things can always get worse.
No you don't have to sit there and take it.

Extinct is coming.
Fight it

>greed, complatency, biggotry
Biggotry doesn't actually seem that bad in comparison to the other flaws from a survivalist standpoint. Complatency is the most deadly, and is pretty much why the AnComs are fucked. Two hours a week of shit that needs to be done followed by masturbation the rest of the time doesn't make for a lot of progress. At least the 40 hour work week is more likely to be for something productive.
>>
>>47909451

I think the point of the small "work week" is that Anarchists are free to fuck around and do whatever they like - which involves plenty of dicking around with science and technical stuff.

Earth was already in really hot water before the TITANs went hot. WMD proliferation and international posturing for WW3, which meant little wars everywhere.

The TITAN's names give a clue to their original purpose Total Information Tactical Awareness Network. I suspect the TITANs were originally built to keep an eye on weapons proliferation in a world where you need 2000 tons of Uranite Ore and a self-replicating machine the size of a washing machine to make a nuke, or skip all that and just make a chemical/biological/nanotechnological weapon.
>>
>>47909451
You're deluded if you think the anarchists only actually work the mandatory two hours a week. They have their own version of the rat race with pursuing their 5th, 6th, 10th PHD, checking out and/or making new art (Anarchists fucking love art, they're a bunch of hipsters), shitposting on community BBS about new proposals, politicking and being seen with the right people, writing polemics about how the Peoples' United Workers Bloc is a shit and everyone should join the United Worker Community Bloc, and the occasional bout of Mandatory Recreational Elective Community Bonus Duty if hab maintenance is REALLY going down the tubes. They're busy little fucks.
They still need to be removed and purged, but at least they stay busy
>>
>>47910706
The super weapon proliferation thing wouldn't have come anywhere near close to wiping out humanity. Everyone was both too good at destroying each other and keeping themselves from being destroyed. The global war had already started before the TITANs made the scene, but it had a minute fraction of the actual casualties.

So I recently got my boyfriend into Shadowrun and he's really liking it. I want to run Transhumanity's Fate for him, but he has an irrational hatred of space and thinks it's too high-tech for him to like it.

Any advice?
>>
>>47945520

So don't put him in space. Mars has been colonized long enough for people to have lived there for their entire lives. Martian city domes are very classic cyberpunk - the only thing your missing is magic (except, y'know, the Zone and TITAN Artifacts are a thing).

If he complains about being off planet being "too high tech", remind him there were offworld colonies and space wars in the backdrop of Bladerunner too.

And there is also a mars colony in shadowrun (and a moon colony) which is "possibly" overrun by a mind rewriting nanomachine enabled disease.
