What's the absolute things you need for an imperial guard armor army?
I'm reading the newer editions and armies have got bigger now.
Good numbers, not overkill. Third Edition style.

Variety and a Rochambeau approach to balance is both good and bad. Especially when that variety is $150 a pop and will eventually require that you upgrade your RW hoopty to a cargo van just to get your shit to the game.
In seriousness, for a tank-centric guard army you need three basic elements:
1. Tanks to anchor your gunline. You should be looking at about 4-6 leman russes of your choosing. This is the core of your army and will do most of the killing
2. Mechanized infantry to capture objectives, be meatshields, and generally do the shit jobs.
3. and fast units, be they fliers, deep strikers, or outflanking fast vehicles to add some variety to your army and apply pressure to your opponent's vulnerable parts. IG have a lot of this, from valks and vendettas, hellhounds, salamander scout tanks, scions, etc.
Tertiary considerations for your meta should also be units for psychic defense (you'll have to ally with someone else for this generally, most tank armies naturally are not predisposed to psyker superiority) and anti-air.
Be warned: a tank heavy army, while workable, is a little underpowered in the current meta. You will suffer hard losses against a lot of the current meta netlists, but, if you like tanks, it's the only way to go, innit?
