These are terrible for character art.
You can't even see their face.
any grapplers? I'm really struggling with the character of a grappling character, and I think some art would help me along.

I'll try to find some.

Anyone got any Napoleonic era shit?
Muskets and all that bullhonkey.
>>47800911
I've got a bit of a specific request.
I need a picture of a young man with a sword. And it must look like it could fit in with a post-apocalyptic setting. Bonus points if he has dull/dead eyes.
>>47807383
I'm a little iffy on exact time periods, but I have a few anyway.
>>47802599
IRL grappling by itself is only really useful in one on one encounters where you're not worried about someone else stomping on your head while you're wrestling the first guy to the ground. Realistically a grapple based character would be dealing damage in some other way whether that's via pugilism or a one handed sword while looking for sweeps or holds with their free hand(s).

Gonna make a small request myself, for a specific piece I remember seeing a long while ago but for the life of me can't find again.
A grizzled, maturer gentleman, blond hair, with a fuck-off massive greatsword. Not really sure what else I can do to describe it, so I apologise, but if anyone has anything that fits that description I'd much appreciate it. Been breaking my back trying to find it again.
In the meantime I'll post a couple elven duellists for you (although I have more ambiguous duellists that don't have their ears shown than specifically elven ones, so I'll probably post most of those).

Err, I actually don't have as many elves in here as I thought. Darn it. Oh well, I'll post a couple more ambiguous ones and hope they help.

Sorry to break from the theme, but does anyone have cyberpunk/sci-fi art of older men? Not quite geezers, but clearly aged.
Anyone have art of intrigue/spymaster-looking characters?
Think Littlefinger from aSoIaF.

Every now and then, I get the weird inkling that the dude who drew Reqium Vampire Knight did concept art for HoMM5 and 6.
So my "Character Art" folder says it has about 4,300 or so images in it. I need to get it organized so I can start dumping in these threads when people request stuff. Suggestions for a good organization scheme? I'm thinking:
Genre->Species->Gender
Not sure if that will be as useful for things like modern/future/sci-fi.

The Sarmatians used to fight using a technique leftover from the time of the Sumerians and Akkadians.
Back in those very ancient times, warfare was still rare on a scale any larger than a 100 people vs. another 100 or so. When the Sumerians or one of their larger neighbors did go to war, they mobilized thousands of people.
In order to arm everyone, they had to rely on cheaper weapons like spears and wicker shields. That meant the individual warrior had little training and equipment.
A spear phalanx was the go-to tactic for Sumerians and the other "civilizations". The neighbors who could not afford the men or weapons like them were swallowed up swiftly by the mass of infantry.
The horse tribes to the North of Sumeria tried charging the squares to little effect. They found skirmishing to be effective. They also found that tossing a lasso into the square in an attempt to snag individuals out of the spear squares was a good way of breaking up the formation and ruining morale.
I can't imagine just standing there while horsemen circle around shooting arrows, throwing spears and rocks, while also tossing the occasional lasso into the crowd behind you.
You watch Akmen, your neighbor since childhood, get dragged out by his neck while the horsemen sneer and roar at you...
Crazy stuff

The Goths picked up a thing or two from them on their way to be "refugees" in the Roman Empire
>>47819395
>>47819420
The Huns seemed so demonic and doomsday-like to the Romans for a number of reasons. One was their appearance: scars so bad on their faces that their facial hair barely grew, filed teeth for some tribes of the Huns, bow-legged stature from lifetime horseback riding, and elongated skulls.
Their language was unlike any heard in Persia or the Roman Empire too, so scholars were at a loss of how to even talk to them if they did not have a Goth to translate for them.
>>47819445
>>47819460
It was so effective at scaring Romans, the Germanic tribes took to doing it to their children. Not all of them of course, but there are still graves from the Lombards/Langobardic peoples who have elongated skulls. This came from a grave in Alsace 1700 years ago - modern day France
>>47819495
There were no qt3.14's among the Huns, that's for sure
>>47819517
The Ancients pulled of some crazy stuff. All over the world, great feats of engineering, creativity, and learning were accomplished. The beauty of history that long ago is that we still have no idea if it is true. We can guess best from whoever kept records of events and such...
It's like most of history is just the best written fantasy of all time

I know it's faded, but the Chinese used to fight off Japanese pirates - because that's all they were to the rest of Asia - using huge pikes. Boat phalanxes were no joke
>>47819602
And if the pirates landed, they had to face these guys: a Mandarin Duck Squadron. 鸳鸯阵 or "yuānyāng zhèn" for those who can't read moonrunes.
The pirates of Japan and Taiwan used to pillage at will along the Chinese coast thanks to the Chinese armies marching in one, massive easy to track blob.
Burn a city in the North, they'd all rush there. That meant the South was open for attack. This went on for many years until the Chinese figured out that splitting up the army into uniform, organized squads along the entire coast would be better.
The squads were extremely effective in either stopping or wounding the pirates so badly that their raiding was ineffective. The Japs had to travel elsewhere or attack seaborn ships - still wielding pikes - to get booty.
