Last Time, on Song of Swords

Titplate revisited
Regarding Halberds
Colossal Shadows
Constitutional Bardiche Carry

Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents. At this time the latest version is v1.9.9:

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

I was reading about Song Swords wayyy back when--I want to say like 2 years ago but that feels like a long time. I'm glad to see we're still kicking, though I still doubt I'll ever get to play it. This kind of thing really intimidates the kinds of plebs I can drum up.

I hope all your fechty crotch stabbing is going well, anons.

>>
has any progress been made on uneven combatant stuff?

like 3v2 or 4v1 sort of combat stuff?
still hoping this could be a usable system for my campaign.
>>
>>47792679
Yes, actually. Group initiative has been greatly simplified by the introduction of a phase-based turn system for determining when you go. Once people are in melee, things can still be a bit sluggish if all of them are bound up in one swirling melee, but 3v4s and the like logically tend to become a large number of pairs with one 1v2, which is much more manageable.
>>
>>47792679
It's doable if the 1 understands the combat system. As expected, however, it can be incredibly difficult unless the 3 or 4 are just jobbers
>>
>>47793282
Yeah, the Ballad stuff has been a huge upgrade at least to that game, I can't wait to see SoS rebuilt around it.

Alright, the tourney will be taking place at 17/6/16 (UTC+10) at 0300 same timezone. I'll post a roll20 link in the sheet and here when I'm finished with it. If you can't be there, put a message somewhere. I'll probably see it eventually.

The Zells you see with Rade Sark are Tesshechtites of one tribe, who were based not on Germans, so to speak, but on certain tribes of the Belgae of Northern Gaul during Antiquity. Essentially the predecessors of the Belgians.

These guys were said to be a fearless, martial tribe, almost spartan in their austerity. They refused to drink alcohol (something you can see in Drosaico's behavior) and abhorred merchants and niceties in general. The Tesshechtites are the Zells who most humans are familiar with, because they're the only tribe that really advertises itself. They are very fond of the idea of uniformity and protocol, and are notorious for writing down events as they occur so that they can be reported at the Moot every hundred years. Their histories are, in fact, so accurate that they are coveted by certain Genosians, and many are the tales of Paladins who have tried to reason with the Zells for a transcript of certain events. Sometimes they comply, but never for free.

But the Tesshechtites are just one Clan. The Dakonats, who worship Yog-Dakon, the God of Hunger, are more Scandinavian in character, with the Branded Zells (The Yoti) being a sort of bastardized Zell-Viking-Native American mix.

The thing that connects them all is the Old Zellish tongue, which, while it may take a little while for distant tribes to work it out, is mutually intelligable between all of the Zellish cultures.

The reason so many Zells are stereotyped as Slavic is because there are more Zells in the Interior Sea of Vosca than there are anywhere else, and they have long spoken a dialect of Osterbijan that developed back in the days before the migration of those people onto the mainland. This is essentially a Slavic language, and is viewed by Zells in the same way that Latin or Greek is viewed by modern people today. It is acceptable, even cultured to draw a name from that pool rather than from whatever native language one speaks.
>>
>>47820055
Hey, Jimmy, can you tell us about anything spooky that lives in Krajina? Ancient Albish spirits, things the Osterbs brought along, things like that? Something that a small, rural party would encounter, of possible.

>>
>>47820168
Well certainly. I think I've mentioned the Dobarcuu before--it is native to the Slivers, and to the many pools and marshes of Kyrnhau and Albion especially. The Nobles of Krajina largely ignore these creatures, since they are never personally inconvenienced by them, but the Unkindlies do try to keep their populations under control.

There are other creatures, however, less obvious and more difficult to hunt. The "Fashers" are one such creature. A breed of troll, hideous and shapeshifting, they dwell in the swamps and call out in their hollow impressions of human voices, to lure the unwitting into the bogs where they can be played with and then devoured. The Unkindlies consider killing one of these trolls in single combat to be a rite of passage for the upper eschelons of the order.

Of course there are countless varieties of monster spawned by the Dark Watchers that inhabit the land, this has been common across Vosca--particularly so in the Slivers--ever since the Age of Beasts rolled around. These creatures have no individual names, but they are easily recognizable for having more than four limbs, as no native creature--excluding Drakes, of course--has such a morphology in Vosca.

Certain undead are also unique to the Slivers. The So-called Droggs, or Kuzlacks, corpses of the many battles of the Civil War who were not properly buried, and sank into the boggs, where they were inhabited by dark spirits or animated by other foul energies. These undead, superficially representing zombies or mere corpses animated by Dark Pyromancy, are unique in that they possess at least some intelligence, and are capable of working together to hunt still-living humans to add to their grisly bands.
These creatures are a source of grave concern for the Krajini government, largely because they have a tendency to "snowball" out of control if not dealt with quickly, and can come to threaten even large cities if ignored.
>>
>>47821144
>Age of Beasts
So monsters haven't always been around?
>>
>>47821144
Are droggs like traditional zombies in that people they kill will be inhabited by spirits and rise as droggs?
>>
>>47821470
They've always been around, but recently the stars have aligned (according to Church scholars) for an increase in monstrous activity. This has been borne out in fact, and records indicate a dramatic upswing in monster attacks.

>>47822121
Yes. Even corpses not killed directly by them will rise unless decapitated or burned, so they tend to build up numbers just walking across the countryside.
>>
>>47822620
are there any places people can't live the monsters are so bad?
>>
>>47822620
People that die in their general vicinity, or just people that were wounded by them and died later?
>>
>>47823795
It's rare. Such places are usually "cleaned out" by local authorities before they become too big of a problem. However horrible monsters may be, there are almost no threats too terrible for a thousand well-armed men to deal with, and a Kingdom can muster tens of thousands, if its tax revenue depends on it. A giant may have been a terrible threat a thousand years ago, but these days even the lowliest kingdom has dozens of cannons sitting around, and bored engineers who could use some field training.

Places that are made inhospitable by monsters and remain so tend to be places which would have been of negligible value to begin with, whose colonization is further complicated by the presence of treacherous beasts. This is not a setting where beasts rule the wilderness--the burgeoning nation-states have already driven such abominations to the corners of their lands, except in countries (like the Krajina) so ruined by war and internal strife that they can no longer project power throughout their own lands.

>>47824543
Not even those who die, years-old corpses can be resurrected by even one passing Kuzlack. A graveyard can become an army, a battlefield can return to unlife. These creatures tend to wreak havoc on recently war-torn countries. Mercifully the Dacians have avoided this problem thusfar because human corpses are valuable--they make for good fertilizer, and heads are taken to be preserved in mausoleums--but even so, there are horror stories of entire track-wagon trains full of bodies reanimating spontaneously.

A popular play (horrifically based on real events) details a hundred-car trackwagon full of reanimated corpses rolling into Vedrim under its own power, and the ensuing massacre that nearly overthrew the entire nation's capital. With the army away, only the Navy under Emanuel Zoak and his handful of marines were on hand to defend the people of Vedrim.

Okay, so, if you are a Void User, you have a pool of Void Capacity. You can spend this void capacity during your phases to use Void Powers. Some powers use your action for the phase, some use your movement, some are instant. At the start of each round, your Void Capacity refreshes, putting you back at your full Void Capacity.

So, for example. I am an Initiate void user with 7 ADR. and 4 Willpower (Wip) (4 WIP+ 6 Initiate Void User = 10 VC). For Phase 1, I execute a Flash, putting me at 5 VC, having spent 5 to Flash. Phase 2, having Flashed to a target the previous phase, I use Winds of The Netherworld: Vortex as a Shoot Action, spending 3 VC to activate the power, then putting in 2 VC as X, my attack dice. Phase 3, I have 0 VC, and cannot do any void witch shit. But the next round rolls around, and my Void Capacity refreshes, giving me 10 VC to use over the next three phases. Phase 1, I Flash away for 5, out of combat.

I'm really shit at explaining systems, but I hope that sorta helps.

The alternative name also sounds slavic. You'd think you'd notice if you had a zombie on your boat, though. Maybe they weren't physically transmitted there, but it instead has something to do with some magic practice the Osterbs do that causes that shit to happen wherever they go.

Previous versions of the song exist as far back as 1848 (as far as I am aware, might be an even older one) originally having been writen for the revolution.

I do not know of an 1930s-1940s version, but something like that may exist. However I'd say that it doesn't quite fit in with the military songs of the time (at least those I know), which seem to emphasize loving your nation, being loyal and that kinda stuff rather than lynch justice.

The entire power grid to my city got wrecked during the middle of the tournament and so did the cell tower. Luckily the few instructions I gave the tournament master didn't get me super killed. Dietrich is no doubt admonished for losing control

Who are the Eridu of Vosca?

Basically a warrior cult of manly warrior men who believe true manliness can only be found in being warriors and penetrating other men.

Don't get charged by Templar. Also, don't drop grenades. Flash is pretty damned useful, but Void Magic does not seem OP as a whole.

This setting is perfect for various problems. I'd start easy with something like pissed off albish bandits, then slowly ramp towards things like the krajini monster problem. A good way to do this would be to only fight humans until closer to the end of the month. Then switch to supernatural after the eclipse. Suddenly, boom, droggs, dark watcher spawn, and manticores. Add in the mysterious abscence of the unkind lies and you have an interesting campaign. Finding The unkindlies and getting blood magic could be a nice endgame also.

I'd throw in some yew smugglers, give a nice moral choice-are they more loyal to their pay than to their countrymen? Or will they steal the yew and sell it themselves?

I'm putting them on a small, basically self contained island. In the center is a massive forest, ostensibly the Queen's private hunting land. It's actually completely unmanaged and overgrown, and nobody hunts there except those "lazy, bootlicking Raven keepers". This breeds resentment among the local Albish, who want to log and farm the land, ignorant of all the horror bullshit that lurks in those woods. This makes the island a hotbed of possible rebellion, and a good way into the supernatural through the evil forest or maybe an Innsmouth-like degenerate village or two on the other side of the woods.

How should I introduce the rebellion aspects? Do you think it would be more effective to immediately introduce them to a rebel force that they have the option of possibly supporting, or should they be sent to break up some more petty criminals that turn out to have ties to the rebels, like Ol' Bartholomew who's only crime is to believe than an honest Alb should be able to relax and bet on some cock death matches after a long day of work?

I'm a fan of giving the party two options at first. For example, escort x item or supplies, or defend x village/outpost from an attack. This allows you to get an idea of what kind of decision making your party makes, and allows you to start with something simple like bandits. Also, it allowed to to make them feel like they made an impact, rebels can get some sort of buff based on the choice. Such as weapons from raiding a convoy, or less npc allies due to a burned down village. Either way, don't start with actual rebels, seemingly unrelated bandits who are ill equipped or poorly trained makes for a better environment for introducing combat. One last note is that you should remember that the albish are famed archers, as such, bows are banned unless the owner bears a special seal stitched to their cloths/armor. This can be a nice starter idea though since access to superior wood is limited and can only really be attained through banditry and black market means.

>>47862185
That being said, if you want to give them the option to support the rebels, I would do that through either some figure who approaches them with an offer, or the town mayor. However, I would only have that be an option if they do something that shows kindness towards albish men such as protecting a village, or letting a group of men hunt on the queen's land to feed their family.

There is, but it has a very different history.

Lower Desotia was initially discovered and colonized by the Cervantii, one of the central powers. However, the natives proved far stronger than anticipated, and repelled their colonists--eventually destroying the colonial capital in Vera Ojo.

To reach the enormous gold reserves, and to dispose of the natives, the Cervantii "flipped" the main island through the use of the single largest whalebone construct in history. Millions fell to their hideous deaths in Underspace, and the island was laid completely bare, with only the previously unexposed bottom accessible to humans.

Numerous colonies were founded on this newly bare landmass, but unfortunately, gold has not been nearly so plentiful on the bottom of the island as it was on the top.

Rumors persist that the great ruins of Lower Desotia can still be found in the upside-down ruins on the bottom of the island, but few would be foolish enough to seek them out, given the island's low altitude and the frequency of Subspace Dust-storms in the region.
Few. But some.

One of the more successful colonies of Cervant, Precipicio, was firmly under Yikong thumb until Field Marshal Diego Soltar successfully pulled a coup and exterminated the opposition.

Famously, his men threw 10,000 Yikong dissidents out of planes into Underspace, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his rule.

Well, we all started in a maze of dirty alleys in a dingy ghetto in a scummy port city. Right away, the fanatical Templar, Dietrich activates his void defenses and starts marching down the main street looking for someone to stab. The Rahoo saboteur, Gordon leaves the building he was in and runs across the alley, taking cover behind the corner of another building and spotting the Chironite. Heinrich, who detests all void magic, hides in a dead end alley. The pirate Enzo, hides behind a stack of barrels in a warehouse, biding his time.

Dietrich, spotting Gordon, charges him. Gordon attempts to throw a flashbang at Dietrich. Enzo uses foul void sorcery to teleport to a door of the warehouse. Heinrich Crosses the street and attempts to draw a bead on Dietrich. Dietrich successfully charges Gordon, who attempts to flee but is stabbed in the back of the shoulder and falls unconscious, bleeding out. Heinrich full-autos and Dietrich, but thanks to his Templar faith and the Give Them the Bayonet talent, fails to hit significantly enough to penetrate his armor.

Dietrich charges Heinrich, and attempts his second pincushion of the day, his countryman declares a full block, and he cannot penetrate the prosthetic shield. Enzo waits patiently at the end of the alley, ready to blast anyone who comes close. Dietrich, off balance from the charge, misses his second thrust, and Heinrich shoots him in the face; the Templar goes down, but will definitely recover.

Heinrich moves into cover and attaches the stock to his pistol. Enzo attempts to call upon a deadly Void Wind Vortex, but only manages to summon some unpleasant smelling gases.

Gordon continues bleeding out.
>>
>>47885409
Heinrich attempts to burst fire at Enzo, but the wily Lucani calls upon the Dustform and moves forward behind some benches. The German's bullets narrowly miss.

The two exchange fire, Enzo's slug burying in the wall near the Chironite, but Heinrichs pistol ammo is not able to penetrate the pirate's armor.

Enzo approaches and fires, his slug glancing off of Heinrich's helmet, causing Heinrich's shots to go wild.

With his magazine empty, Heinrich drops his pistol, draws his sword, and charges. Enzo counter charges, firing at the Chironite's legs but barely missing. Heinrich closes some distance, brandishing his broadsword, but dodging the shot has left him off balance, and his clumsy swing is easily parried by the pirate's prosthetic arm.

Heinrich attempts to cut him again, but Enzo uses his powers to Flash to the roof of a nearby shed.

Enzo tries once again to call on the Winds of the Void but is still shaken from the melee and his powers barely hurt Heinrich, who retrieves his pistol and runs to the body of Gordon to steal some grenades, almost getting shot in the process.

Heinrich grabs a Stielhandgranate and throws it at Enzo, who has dropped from the roof and is closing in. Heinrich, never having played many sports, releases the grenade at an awkward angle causing it to bounce off the wall to his left and land at his feet.

Enzo and Heinrich dash away from the primed grenade, Gordon is unable to.

Heinrich ducks into a building to reload, and Enzo follows him, activating Dustform again.

Heinrich cannot get a good sight of the void sorcerer, and Enzo continues his Dustform and begins aiming.

Heinrich misses again, and after three phases of aiming, Enzo headshots the Chironite, and walks away into the sunset.

Their Krajini handler described the rebels as "bandits", which they readily accepted without a second thought. They're preparing to march into the hills to kill. It's going to be a blood bath either way. Looks like my party is made up of good Krajina Citizens.

Nice, get them thinking their working for the good guys, then flip the script and have them fight for the rebels before realizing the rebels are assholes too.

Krajini govt routinely doesn't care about ablishmen, have the nobles treat albish in the same way colonial Britain treated the Irish and everything will work beautifully.
