So, after a highly entertaining run that ended with my whole team receiving kill on sight orders from Aztechnology, we're laying low in Greece. Any suggestions for fun stuff we can get up to in that part of the setting?

Thing you should know about Istanbul is that its actually not called that anymore. Some time after the second Euro war they became in independent city state with corporate help. Its back to being called Constantinople.

The 10000 Daggers have a big presence in the city. Its where I'm DMing my campaign. If you want to know more about Turkey I would recommend Shadows of Asia.

I think the reason why this could make sense is because after the second Euro War there was a lot of hate towards the the countries that started the war. Think Germany after ww2. Wanting to separate themselves from that isn't too far of a stretch I think.

Plus on a corpate side they have the opertunity to take advantage of this and install a government that benefits them.

Why are Biospikes from Hard Target so much shit? Only implant weapon that doesn't get any AP (not counting calluses, but those sorta dont count). Hell, even biospikes maxed with BDA only do equal to calluses on top of maxed BDA. for like 4 times the essence and 10 times the nuyen.

I suppose because it's supposed to be the most discreet implant weapon possible (even calluses would be noticed before it), but it's still poorly balanced. You're much better off spending the money (or karma equivalent) on martial arts.

>>47793698
Most characters can do without, but if you really spend a lot of time up close then it's handy. For a decker or infiltrator, something like Finishing Move is very handy in niche situations- if you manage to get the drop on someone, you can hit him twice before he gets the chance to respond, which might be the difference between walking away and getting your codeslinging ass chopped off. Goes double for trolls, who usually have great physical limits without trying, so they can do some challenging techniques without worrying.
>>
>>47793810
That does sound useful, again if said troll was anywhere near slightly sneaky. Our group should just look into actually learning the stealth skill and not rely on my characters silver tongue and the wage slave decker's mad hacking skills to break in.

>>47794479
Basically how spirits think, and why they think the way they do, is a matter for theological/philosophical discussion. Is a hermetic Spirit of Fire really different from a Zoroastrian Spirit of Fire- do they both come from the same metaplane but are shaped by the summoner's perceptions, is the former just personifying elemental forces while the latter really is an angelic figure sent from heaven? Would the latter refuse to murder a child on moral grounds while the former (being an amoral anthropomorphic personification) would dutifully have an orphan BBQ? And for the Zoroastrian spirit, is it really the spirit objecting, or is it the summoner's ideas of what the spirit would and would not do that influence it's willingness to perform that service?

So you have spirits that seem very close to human in their mindset (especially mentor spirits), and you have spirits that are utterly alien in their inner workings, and there's no telling what the relationship between those two extremes is, let alone what the truth really is. Solipsism is hard enough with meatbags.

Hey srg, help me clarify matrix icons? Specifically using them to locate people/targets in real world.

Does an icon correlate to its location in meatspace or is it more of a general thing? Say I detect three commlink icons w matrix perception in a room - would I be able to tell where in the room they are precisely? Could I stick an ARO on them to tag their location to my team? If so, would it move in real time to track targets through walls/cover? And would I need marks for any step in this?

Thanks in advance!
>>
>>47795910
>Does an icon correlate to its location in meatspace or is it more of a general thing?
Icons are general direction and faded by signal strength. No location, unless they are a specific kind of icon - an AR Object (ARO / Arrow). Which you mentioned, already, and sound like you know how they work.

Otherwise you need a radio signal / bug scanner, or to mark & track the relevant icon(s).
>>
>>47795979
Thanks, that's v helpful! Will look into the radio scanner stuff

As someone coming from 4th edition, is an internal router as important as I think it is?

Or should I hand my PAN to the team matrix guru and let them handle that end, and keep my .75 ESS?

To determine a persona's/icon's physical location, you need to use the "Trace Icon" action.

Mostly useless. The only really interesting use is for a character with the Wired Reflexes/Reaction Enhancers combo that for some reason has no Smartlink.
>>
>>47797370

>>
>>47797385
It is poorly implemented in any case. A common houserule is to allow to take the router for some capacity in a limb instead of the (ridiculously high) essence cost.

If they're an adept, then Traceless Walk gives a -2 penalty to being tracked by scent. Could give drugged meat a shot as well, there's plenty of ingestion toxins out there.

>>47796677
If you have a high-grade commlink or a decker worth his salt, then you can protect your cyber well enough by making a PAN and slaving your devices to a device with better security.

It can be a good way for a GM to say "no, fuck you" when a player decker wants to hack an important enemy street sam, but that seems kind of needlessly antagonistic to me.

>>47797385
Yep. Accept it as a game decision to help make decking combat relevant. Weird in fluff, nice in practice is the way I see it.
>>
>>47798035
It's not that weird in fluff if you start from the "Everything must be connected forever to sustain the Matrix as a whole" shtick.

If, by design, a device will be online all the time it is in use; then solving any compatibility issues between different devices through an external application (held on the comlink or the cloud or anywhere on the Matrix, who cares, everything's online anyway) "translating" the data feeds is both cheaper, easier to maintain and update and (in the case of cyberware) less invasive than hardwiring everything together.

The problem is that the Internal Router, i.e. the option to actually hardwire everything together, is simply way too expensive. That it'd cost a little essence because you have a couple extra data cables running under your skin, sure. But not a whopping 0,75 point out of the 6 you have available.
>>
>>47798227
It's roughly akin to the old internal router tech. 3e, iirc, but I only read it - never played with it.
Shouldn't surprise anyone; 5e is the edition where the tech advancement went wibbly wobbly under the assault of CFD. Nanite-etched internal wires went the way of the dodo.

Where would you put it? Closer to .5 or .25?

If you look at it from the perspective of "this 'ware shuts off one of your major counters" it's reasonable, but since it's really "this 'ware lets you keep a minor bonus while your wireless is off" it's overcosted.

The most important wireless bonus is probably Reaction Enhancers + Wired Reflexes, and if you don't have that combo it's definitely not worth it. The Availability is low enough that you might be able to get it at betaware without too much trouble.

A couple of suggestions:
- Remove the points in Forgery, put them in Armorer and Demolitions instead. Your group will FUCKING GRADE A+ LOVE YOU if you can set a breaching charge or handload them a mag of bullets with more oomph for when SHTF.
- Your cyberarm is a waste of nuyen as it is. I assume you are planning to load it out with gimmicks later, but it might be better to save up more and get a customised base model.
- You are horribly slow in meatspace. I would suggest dropping the arm and get (Alphaware) Boosted Reflexes from Chrome Flesh instead, to boost your init to 8+2d6. This will ensure you have 2 passes except on the shittiest roll, and have enough to spare for a dodge on a decent one.
- Another possibility to boost your initiative is pharma-/designer-grade Cram, to be taken when the run starts. With your Body of 2, it will last you eight hours, which should be more than enough. With 10 dice in LOG + WIL and an addiction treshold of 2 thanks to the better grade of drugs, it should be hard to succeed on the addiction tests.
- You have a fake SIN but no license. You need at least one for your deck, one for your gun and a driver license to be kosher in 99% of the cases. (You'd normally need one for the smartlink in your eye as well, but okay.)

All in all, though, it's a pretty solid character.

So I had an idea, but I have questions.

What, exactly, could a charismatic Nartaki with her own small cult in India do or need to do with shady business across her country of origin and across southeast Asia, and not have to tamper with Hindu teachings? I figured a lot of political and religious rivalry, but I'm not sure if that's filled with intrigue enough.

Second, say an Untouchable of the Hindu castes manages to become a Nartaki. Does the belief of them being touched by Gods change the Untouchable's status immensely, or do the Brahmin caste act more reserved towards that possibility? Might be a key development here in this character.

So, i might want to run a game that's very pink mohawk and also kinda "low-level"-ish.
What is the best way to achieve this in 5e?
Sum to 9 (or 8), reduced Karma (how low?) or just strict GM control?
I want runners who are hired to break into some AAA secret weapons lab but not so down that they have to resort to robbing the local stuffer shack. The kinds of runner who have potential, but who have yet to prove themselves.
>>
>>47801327
Sum-to-8 is your best bet. The only consequence is that you'll probably end up with a lot of humans with perhaps the token elf.

Run Faster is mandatory for the qualities, and Chrome Flesh for the ware.

R&G, B&B, R5 and HT for the gear. SG is fine too.

Honestly, there's no one book that's obvious trash and should be disqualified entirely, it's only sections of certain books (like AI in Data Trails or metasapients in RF) that need specific denial
>>
>>47801872
Chrome Flesh, Data Trails and Rigger 5.0 to prop up mundanes.

Run&Gun if you want more gear.

Ironically, Street Grimoire is the last one I'd add. Awakened are already pretty decent out of the box.
>>
>>47801872
Run Faster has some cool extra positive and negative qualities and alternative character generation rules.

Do you want extra guns? Gun Heaven 3 or Run and Gun both have some alternate options that mostly are side grades as opposed to direct upgrades from the standard Ares Alpha/AK-97. Run and Gun also gives some other options for character generation such as martial arts and rules for operating in space.

I'd say unless you want to go crazy with augmentations and drugs, then don't bother with Crome Flesh, but it does give a good idea on how much it would cost to truly go dark after a really bad run.

Funny you should mention that.

We just had to make sure a Greek gang paid up for the privilege to distribute BTL's and other drugs for the Vory, and by that I mean kill 8 of a 30 man gang, have one thrown into Staten Island for life and have one turn on the rest otherwise we would break his sons legs.

It seems that no matter what world Greeks think they can get away with not paying any debt

You mean when the Entente saddled Germany with a crushing load of reparations, forcing them to pay back an entire continent's worth of war debt, after lying to Germany about wanting an equitable peace and occupying the country to prevent the diplomats from protesting this abuse of 'negotiations'? And when Germany couldn't pay it all back on the obviously preposterous timetable that was demanded of them, the French and Belgians occupied valuable land and made the country even more incapable of paying the reparations?

Or when the Allies unilaterally issued the Berlin Declaration (because they didn't recognize the civilian German government), annexed a quarter of Germany, and assumed control over the rest of it to use as a battleground for the looming Cold War?

Not German, but you must be Greek to use such shit arguments as a pathetic justification for welshing on deals you voluntarily made, after the Greek government admitted to lying about it's defeict for years in 2009, and despite being buried in cash from the IMF, ECB, and EC the Greeks just threw it into paying off loan interest and not actually reforming the country.

Cynicism. the world will chew you up and spit you out. Desire to see a better life for younger people he interacts with, maybe. Or desire to not form attachments since everyone is going to end up chunky salsa anyway.

Practicality. lots of covering tracks, being cautious, trusting the right people, verifying information, always eating when there's food available, taking every advantage even if it doesn't look cool, etc.

I'd really like to see Fauntine from Les Miz as a competent street sammy on some level. Like, someone who goes through hell and takes suicidally dangerous missions or indentured servitude to a crime lord to pay for someone else to raise their child away from the life they grew up in, make sure the kid gets a good education, a comfortable future as a wage slave, never knows what their parents were truly like, etc.

The real entitites there are the corps, the magicians (The comet re-activated a ton of ritual sites based on ancient greek bulidings) and the Grey Wolves, the turkish crime syndicate. The greeks actually love the wolves, and the wolves mostly run stuff like gambling and milk money off dumb tourists than their usual harder fare, because the Greeks see them as heroes because they moved in during the second Eurowar and helped fight off the Alliance for Allah.

Not a bad start, but I think you could use a specialization or two. A specialization in Matrix Search for Computer tends to come in handy, and a Batons or Machine Pistols spec would get your weapon pools closer to actually decent. The Dead Man's Switch (better known as SR: Returns) was the very first game. It is more limited, both in scope and in gameplay, than the two others.

Dragonfall and Hong Kong have a much better fleshed out cast of characters; and are better at giving you the illusion of choice.

Omae... It's a NEGATIVE quality. The only "good" thing it can do is being used in a con ("As you can see from my SIN, I am an ARES employee.", that kind of things.) But that also leaves a very blatant data trail.

>the bad
Those that were born SINless will envy you, resent you, hate you, perhaps even try to kill you just because you once served "The Man" if it ever comes out.

And most people don't leave a corporate ob voluntarily. Some of your former corporate pals could still harbor grudges.

>>47788595 here. As a player in the outrageously amazing LA game, our "arcs" have been dressed up as trid-show episodes.

Episode 1 involved my character parkouring her way out of Disneyland with the Mouse's internal security on her heels; she received an email from them later with "Don't pull that shit again or you won't live for a threepeat," along with a pair of complimentary tickets.

Episode two included our mystad face roundhouse-kicking a shadow spirit in the face so hard she banished it; and us retrieving an artifact that tied the guy harvesting/raising said shadow spirits to the Black Lodge.

Episode three (and four and five) was this enormous, cockamamie plan that involved tying our producer's ideas for three runs into one giant amalgam; notable events included taking a submersible to an underwater lab in *Los Angeles' waters*, my catgirl ninja flashing the cams some fanservice while stowing genetic samples inside her sneaksuit and escaping to stun scientists with her bow (one of them suicided by cyanide tooth), and basically setting half the Raft on fire.

The most recent run involved us disrupting a wedding that was to cement an alliance between the azzies and a prominent japanocorp. We *very nearly* had my character smuggled into the wedding cake, but decided that would be too camp; instead she drugged the catering with some of the "Haha what inhibitions" drugs so that people at the wedding became suggestible and violent.

We didn't fire a shot, but the whole thing devolved into chaos once the hacker took over some screens and showed what kind of murderous and awful people the bride and groom were.

Which is what led directly to >>47786341's post.

Humanity survives the same way we did in Earthdawn; by building big fuckoff bunkers and waiting it out. Theoretically modern bunkers would be better than 4th Age bunkers, because we can do things like set up a wired network between them and stay in contact.

If you mean 'modern Sixth World civilization', then the answer to that died with Dunkelzahn. An idea that has been bandied about in metafluff conversations is that Big D wanted to accelerate progress and unify metahumanity so that we'd be prepared to face the Horrors head-on (possibly by going to space and using that mana-free environment to safely drop Thor Shots on them), but canonically few people know the Horrors even exists, and fewer still have any idea at all of what they're capable of and how they were survived before.
>>
>>47822376

>I notice during my time of Gming I don't care for shadowruns lore at all
Like the basic core of whats going on is ok but I don't give a fuck about anything else so I never bring it up in my games. But I'm unsure on how my players fee about that as of now it seems they are cool with that but what about you guys I know you talk about lore here often because its fucking /srg/ but how mad would you be if you enter a game and the Gm clearly doesn't "care" for the lore in a way that he only knows about sinless the corps and a few other basic things?
>>
>>47823649
The metaplot is pretty retarded as with most settings. Pick and choose, it's your campaign.
>>
>>47823649

I would be kind of upset if a whole bunch of things started happening that my brain told me were impossible, desu. I wouldn't be upset at all if the game were simply about every day criminality in the sixth world and thus just didn't involve any higher concerns of any kind. I'm going to be completely honest and say I don't have a photographic memory for lore, and probably wouldn't even notice a lot of minor things. But like, major characters suddenly being alive again who weren't, or in relationships that don't make sense, or what Mac did to drakes would all upset me.

>>47823168
I don't know. The obvious problems I see is that you can't do a traditional 4X game with it. You don't get exclusive control of areas (even in Aztlan, other megacorps can operate- it's only in explicitly extraterritorial megacorp territoy that they can do that), you compete for market share with other corporations of all sizes. You also don't get to use armies, just PR.

>>47823649
If the GM was advertising a regular Shadowrun game, and when I showed up it was just someone's homebrew cyberfantasy, I'd be pretty pissed.

If I showed up, and the GM had made his own homebrew setting because he 'didn't like' the original SR, but when I asked him about it he only knew a few basic things, I would be fucking furious. I'd feel like the GM was a lazy bastard who didn't bother to do the reading and care about the setting, he just wanted to bait & switch with someone else's marketing.

If I was already part of a group, and someone offered to run a campaign that was based in SR but different, and they had a campaign bible that laid out what they changed (and when I asked they could explain why they changed stuff that I liked), then I'd probably be OK.
>>
>>47823845
well if I had to pick one of them the closest would be your number two and out of that it would be the "I don't care about the setting". but it's not a homebrew setting just me not caring about any of the "deeper" lore in the setting.

Probably wouldn't like it. If the GM doesn't want CFD in the game, that's fine -establish it up front so no one includes it in their backstory, and the game can go on fine.

If they wanted to throw out Jackpoint, I'd want to know why. I've only seen them impact the game once, when we had a status-obsessed runner who was desperate to gain admittance. You don't have to include it in a game, but you also don't need to trash it.

And generally GMs work with what they can remember and find, but they don't just bin things willy-nilly. The Sixth World is a big place, and it's a lot easier to just not make a run that includes something you don't like than it is to rip it out of the setting entirely and try to patch up the messy hole it left.

That's actually how we play it. We assume that most of the low-key metaplot happened, but we ignore stuff we don't really know about or agree as a group is just dumb.

Also if the GM needs to change a big thing of the metaplot for the sake of the game, he always tells us first. Like, our current GM wants to run a game where the Big D was legitimately killed, and it wasn't a suicide. He had a whole campaign planned out around his killer and starting a big "shadow war," revolving around one singular Bane-inspired mercenary who desperately wants to change the status quo. But there was a bit of an issue.

He had planned ALL of this before he found out the actual metaplot surrounding Dunkelzahn's death and the whole end of the world thing he stopped. None of us knew about that plot until I accidentally discovered it here on /srg/. Upon my telling him, we agreed that if we played this campaign he really wanted to, it'd be in an AU where the only major change was that the end of the world wasn't really coming (because no one in our group likes apocalypse-oriented metaplots) and the Big D's death was a legitimate mystery that no one knew about. I call it the Shadow Wars Continuity.

It all depends on what you change and how your GM treats it. Like, when I run a game, I have a sort of "[Anon's] Continuity," Shadowrun. In my continuity, the TwoDee Storytime events happened. It's just a neat little thing that happened. I also put the events of Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong in there. I might occasionally drop easter eggs or something, nothing too big unless the party chooses to get involved in those things. They haven't so far, because the story never asked for it, but it's always just a neat little thing that gives the world that all of our games take place in a little more meat.

Get political. Having a metahuman rights activist Contact can get you into some nice circles, as could knowing a local playboy.

Knowing a local political leader might keep KE
from hassling you too much.

Maybe you know a Tamanous ghoul. Or a grimy changeling street kid who you've fed a few times. A local trideo producer or a skeevy BTL saleswoman (she's into pixie snuff).

It's the Sixth World, omae. Pretty much everyone's interesting - even the wageslaves.

What do you guys think of the MGS-styled muscle suits that are resistant for smaller rounds and are tight-fitting (yet mobile) enough that you can fit tactical kit over them?

Pic related. I LOVE this shit. Does Shadowrun have anything like it? How does the system handle putting, say, a plate carrier over it?

They're both currently on sale on GOG, if anyone is interested. Dragonfall, at least, is great, and gives a good idea of how a campaign should go.

>It is possible that a character may become Infected in the course of playing Shadowrun. If the character has any unspent Karma at that point, it needs to be spent paying off the cost of the acquired quality. If the character does not have enough unspent Karma to pay that amount, they need to spend all Karma they earn on the quality until it is fully paid off.

Well at the very least the Sixth World almanac which contains the timeline up to 2073 or so.
If you understand (some) Kraut visit http://shadowhelix.pegasus.de/Zeitleiste and click on the year. After that go to the bottom of the page. There you find the books cited. Reading them might help

1. Open site
2. Scroll down to year wanted

4. Scroll to the bottom of that page
5. ??????????????????????????
6. Profit

In this case check out the OP pastebin again, it has Shadowrun 2050 in german (in the 5th ed. folder "In Deutsch", which is interesting because there is an additional chapter about Berlin from SR:Dragonfall.

What's the deal with Manablade? Haven't gotted to reading through this issue yet.

Also, is there a list of broken builds\stuff in 5th ed? Would appreciate it.
>>
>>47839433
It's damage and accuracy is the Force of the spell, and any net hits you get on the attack via you Blades or Clubs skill adds to the damage as well. It only works on living targets, but is only resisted by BOD. So, a standard Force 6 spell (drain is F-2) and a good attack with 3 net hits means 9 physical damage vs. BOD.
That's rough already, two strikes for most targets. Now use a fetish to reduce the drain to F-4, overcast a Force 12 manablade and resist the drain with Edge. You now have a blade with 12 base damage, 12 accuracy, and even one single net hit on you attack makes it 13 physical damage, resisted only by BOD. That is some brutal shit.
>>
Hey /srg, I just wanted to genuinely thank this general en masse. It's my first time playing shadowrun after being a shitty Demon the Fallen player for ages, and I'm having the time of my life. Everyone here is very cool and hepful, and my experiences here are leaps and bounds above the CofDg. Thank you for the info, the jokes, and the general non-horribleness.
>>
>>47839713
you're welcome, faggot
>>
>>47839592
Don't forget that because net hits are mostly used for resisting dispelling, some people suggest sustaining spells until your Spellcasting pool is under or near your Magic rating, so that even if you get unlucky the drain is still stun.
>>
>>47839433
No, but it ain't hard to think of some.

Manablade is broken because of what >>47839592 said

Grenade launchers with contact nades are extremely broken, especially semi auto ones because you can't avoid them, only soak. The best defence against them is to kill the wielder before it can shoot.

Avoid builds where you stack initiative and full defense with something like agile defender basically make you go loads and impossible to touch (of course, easily countered with grenade launchers).

Chemical weapons, e.g. pepper punch can be lethal especially if paired with a grenade launcher.

Maybe not broken but definitely significantly stronger than most things, with a few hard counters only.
>>
>>47839592
Wow. That's almost as OP as a force 6 fire spirit.

>>
>>47840253
Add in a point or two of 'ware for assorted bonuses, and you probably have a good start.
>>
>>47840276
What were they again.
All i can think of is max str n some agi with improved reflexes and melee skill stuff with an axe.
>>
>>47839856
Your hits on your spellcasting test are used to resist dispelling, but as for Powerblades all hits are net hits, even a average caster and an average roll are 4 hits to dispell.

Speaking of which, which spells for a powerblade-wielding MysAd-"Jedi"? I got Levitate, Influence, Clout, Blast, Powerblade (duh), maybe Lighting Bolt (for Sith tendencies). Any other typical force powers that can be simulated with spells?
>>
>>47840364
If you have the nuyen, then get the bioware augs for Str and Agi. You get more than one PP's worth out of that partial point of essence. If you don't have a lot of nuyen, then get the cyberware muscle replacement. It gives two PP worth of augmentation for one Essence (meaning one PP).

You might consider something like Platelets so that you take one less physical damage when you do take damage and eventually save up for or take restricted gear for a Pain Editor.
>>
>>47840420
What's the closest thing you can get to berserker in character creation.

Fling (Spell), Combat Sense (Spell or Power), Danger Sense (Power), Blind Fighting (Power), Freefall (Power), Hang Time (Power), Thought Recognition (Spell), Detect Life(Spell), and Detect Enemies(Spell).
>>
>>47840403
The cheese involved in what I mentioned is that as most builds capable of casting a force 12 spell are going to have spellcasting pools that can produce 6 or more hits. If you sustain spells until your pool rolls your magic in dice or less, then you can't take physical drain. So even if you mess up the drain resistance, you're not going to be dead or dying.

But as to the jedi stuff, you'll probably also want Combat Sense and/or Deflection.

There's a few options:
Drugs like Kamikaze and K-10, which you can throw into an auto-injector
The Berserk Adept Power (Street Grimoire)
Poor Self Control - Combat Monster (Negative quality from Run Faster)
Superhuman Psychosis (Negative Quality from Chrome Flesh)
Adrenaline Pump bioware
Berserker Metagenic Negative Quality (Run Faster, can be taken even without SURGE)

And one rank of spellcasting. Seven dice has a very low chance of getting seven hits, but it's there. Sustain a spell, make it five dice, and that chance disappears.

Granted, it'd probably be better to do it with two ranks, because still no risk but you have better chances of actually casting the spell.
