>all of a sudden

Ever heard of Scholar's mate?
>>
>>47783447
chess has been popular for many years

Sure but I've never once played against a Patzer online, except for the last two days where I've seen it three times. Was it used recently by a GM or something?

Why is... chess... popular?

Why is CHESS popular.
>>
>>47783483
Well, that's what you get for playing with randoms.

T-that technique...!
Is there a defense against it?!

I guess. The only person I regularly play with is my buddy who GMs for our weekly sessions, and he tends to lag behind because I play fairly regularly.
>>
>>47783536
He's talking about a starting move
>>

Move the pawn in b2 up one. If the queen takes it, you can take her with the pawn in c2. If the queen moves forward one, the knight in b1 can get her. If she moves two right, the pawn in b3 can get her. So, she has to move backwards, or one square right.

It's popular because the knee-jerk response
2. g7
is met with
3. Qxe5+
forking the King and Rook; no matter which piece defends, White has an enormous advantage.

2. ... Nc6 is, I believe, the idea here. Piling pressure onto e5 doesn't yield much; after
3. Nf3 d7, Black doesn't really have a way to prevent 4. ... g7, kicking the Queen off the square and winning tempo regardless (and at the level where this move is attempted, 5. Qh4? and 5. Qh3?? are blunders that may show).

One square right to B4 and the black queen gets her.

also, in case it wasn't obvious: you won't see this in remotely competitive play. It's too aggressive, and too easily answered, to be successful. There are openings that get mid-level players out of their likely book knowledge and are easy to flub... this is not one of them.

You have your board orientation reversed. Black's bottom-right is h8.
>>
>>47783715
Ah, true. The only hazard would be if she goes diagonally back two to c6, which means you have to sacrifice the pawn in d4. If you take the white pawn in d5, the white queen would then be able to take the black pawn, placing the black king in check.

I don't use that notation enough to remember it's the opposite way from every graph ever. Maybe I should just call it (1,1), etc.
>>
>>47783746
>>47783762
It's because OP's board is round the other way. If it were white on the bottom the notation would be more obvious

I'm a dummy.

Did you seriously ask why is the most well known board game on this entire planet, bar none, is 'suddenly' popular?
Seriously?
