Shinobi Quest #14
This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.
(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

You walk over to your team- Nori and Hinata both greet you warmly. The three of you chat a little and exchange pleasantries before Itachi comes back over to tell you what’s going on.
“Our team along with Guy’s have been assigned to a joint C-Rank mission- we’re to assist the Land of Hot Springs with putting down some armed militants near the border between them and the Land of Frost- a small nation under the thumb of Kumogakure. The militants aren’t shinobi and seem armed only with conventional weapons, so we are to go in and remove them. By any means necessary.
“Search and destroy, huh?” Nori says, obviously pumped up. “Nice and simple. What about my brother’s team?”
“Judgement is still forthcoming on the exams, and as Neji is injured, they’re being sent deal with a different C-Rank mission- to protect some bridge builder in the Land of Waves.”

“I’d like to know more about our mission sensei. Numbers, weapon types, who leads them…. I won’t be unprepared again.” you say somberly.
Nori and Hinata turn to you, nodding.
“Very well. I’ll give you the full debriefing as we travel- we’re going to head north through the Valley of the End, then west into the Land of Hot Springs. We’re going to try and avoid going through the Land of Rice Fields. It’s in some kind of upheaval right now- a distraction we cannot really afford.” Itachi says, with a small frown.
“Oh, and you also mentioned that Hyuga boy was hurt?” you mumble, pretending to be looking through your tools as you say so, rather disinterestedly.
“Compound fracture of the collarbone, dislocated shoulder, and some serious bruising- to more than just his ego.” Kakashi says, eyes downcast into his little book.
“For someone who specializes in Taijutsu, it’s gonna keep him out of action for a little while. Naruto here went a little overboard-” Kakashi thwaps Naruto on the head with the spine of his book.
Naruto just laughs nervously.

“I will, Naruto-san. Although she might just end up being the one protecting me-” you start, though you feel Nori making a face at her brother, this time.
“Bro. Go on your mission. You might be a chunin soon but I’ll still beat you up, ya know?” she says, not hiding her wicked grin.
“Sure, sis. Just don’t get in over your head.” he says while ruffling her hair. She’s growling, but it’s effect is diminished, just a little.
Soon, Team Kakashi departs, heading south towards the Land of Waves. You hope everything turns out alright for them.
You rejoin the large group that constitutes the combined Teams Guy and 7, and take a quick mental inventory of your collective skills.
Yourself- High skill in Ninjutsu, with a few offensive skills. Somewhat skilled in the use of a shortbow and war fan. There’s also your release, but you don’t plan on revealing that for now. So far you’ve been utilizing shadow clones to your advantage.
Hinata- Taijutsu specialist, best in close range. Knows mainly supplementary Jutsu.
Nori- Skilled in Taijutsu, also makes use of her Chakra Chains to great effect. Skilled in Wind Release techniques, and posses some odd chakra.
Lee- Presumably skilled in Taijutsu, since you’ve never seen or heard of him using anything else. May be a liability.
Sakura- A smart girl, with a fiery temper. Skilled in the basics and support Jutsu.
Sasuke- Skilled in offensive Jutsu, like yourself. May also be able to utilize the Sharingan, although you’re unsure.
You have no idea of the full capabilities of either sensei. Do you wish to inquire about anything in particular?

I imagine something along the lines of having Lee, Sasuke and Hinate as front line with Nori working as midline for any that get past while Sakura supports the frontline. Meanwhile we're in the back laying down fire power on the enemy.

As you sensei plan out your route, you propose a little bit of information exchange.
“I’m sure we’d all like to know what each other is capable. That way we can plan accordingly.” you say.
Lee pipes up immediately. “I’m an expert in Taijutsu! I’m strong and fast, like Guy sensei!”
Sakura shoots him down almost immediately. “And you can’t use ninjutsu, and have only basic proficiency in ninja tools, you clod.”
Lee deflates.
“Meanwhile, Tsuki-hime, I’ve been learning some water based support jutsu- although it’s mainly been through independent study. Guy-sensei has been training me in Taijutsu, as well. So while I’m not necessarily on his level, I’m more than proficient.”
Sasuke then speaks up. “I know several fire attacking jutsu, along with the Uchiha clan’s signature Great Fireball and Phoenix Flower techniques. And before you ask, no, my sharingan have not awakened yet. As brother always reminds me.”
He glares at Itachi, but it’s more out of annoyance than malice.
You give them a rough breakdown of your abilities and those of your teammates.
Sasuke quirks an eyebrow. “He taught you the Great Fireball? Interesting. You should see if you can learn the Phoenix Flower as well- it’s a useful technique. Good to know there’s an emerging talent like myself on your team.”

As you discuss, your sensei return to the group.
“Alright everyone! It’s time to head out!” Guy says, shooting the signature thumbs up pose from before.
Itachi clarifies. “We’re going to head north today. We’ll probably hit the Valley by nightfall, and set up camp. From there, we’ll head west, into the Land of Hot Springs, skirting the Land of Rice Fields as much as possible. If you have any questions, you can ask along the way.”

I know you’re concerned, but the intel for this mission is good. We have no reason to believe these are anything more than armed thugs. They don’t even seem related to the issues in the Land of Rice Fields.”

“The request came from a small village near the border between the Land of Hot Springs and the Land of Frost. As a nation without an active shinobi Village, many choose to send requests our way- instead of the Cloud, who control the Land of Frost.”
“Several weeks past, a group of men began raiding caravans heading to the village from the more prosperous inner towns of the region. As a result, the villagers have begun to starve. These men wear no banners or headbands, and show no shinobi talents or use of chakra. What they do have, though, is mechanical weaponry. Steel crossbows and kunai launchers, explosives- they are pressing this arms advantage against anyone who questions them. While we don’t know exact numbers, the report says there are somewhere between 30-40 of them, in total. Not all of them have the mechanical weapons, though. Many other members have been seen using more conventional weapons.”
“We are to eliminate them. Any questions?” Itachi finishes.

We don’t know exact numbers, either, but we know less than half of their members seem to have them. We’ve gotten reports of auto-kunai launchers, crossbows, and explosives. We imagine they probably have a stockpile in their base- somewhere. It would be for the best if we either take them, or destroy them, once we’re finished.” he answers.
“Taking them is better, sensei.” you respond immediately.

You chase off after him, catching up to the others.

Keeping pace with the others, you spend most of the day running. Eventually as the sun begins setting in earnest, you reach the Valley of the End, the area marking the end of the Land of Fire, and Konoha’s influence. North of here is the Land of Rice Fields, east, the Land of Hot Springs. To the west, many other lands await.
You gave upon the valley- the rugged waters cutting deeply through the cliffside, flanked by the statues of the Village’s founders- Tobirama Senju and Madara Uchiha. You didn’t know much about their personal history, although you could never forget these names.
You can see both Itachi and Sasuke are also looking at the statues, while everyone else seems busy making camping preparations. Lee and Guy had been carrying a majority of the camping supplies on their back, insisting that it was additional training. They both have immediately began clearing the campsite and setting up a perimeter.

You decide to help the girls set up camp.
As you pass by Itachi and Sasuke, who are still looking at the statues, you decide to say something to them.
“History is written by the victors, you know. I’m sure Madara had a reason for what he did.” you say in a solemn tone.
It’s Itachi that speaks up. “They were the best of friends. They worked towards their ideals- both of them. But his actions have lead to a lot of pain for his descendants. I can only hope we don’t repeat his mistakes.”
You leave the brothers Uchiha to their rumination, and head towards the burgeoning campsite.
Immediately you set work, directing and managing the girls as the campsite is set up- and under your leadership, it’s a wonderful success! Just as you knew it would be.

While I like puppets too, the problem with them is that they're an entire fighting style of their own, that contrasts a with what we're kinda setting Tsuki up to be (i.e. a mid-to-long-range specialist with her ninjutsu and Stellar Release).
Little bits of armor and gear that use techniques and concepts drawn from ninja puppetry instead of outright puppets, on the other hand, are additive instead of subtractive - instead of needing to spend our time and concentration controlling a puppet, we just fight on our own, and if needed then we can pull out the puppet-like tricks hidden in our armor. It's got all the advantages of ninja puppetry (tricks, traps, poison and motherfucking buzzsaws) without the downsides (you have to carry a giant-ass fucking puppet around everywhere, and Tsuki's not all that strong yet; your fighting style is utterly goddamn obvious unless you pull a Kankuro and Tsuki's not gonna wrap herself up in fucking bandages; if anyone knows how to cut chakra strings then your best chance for survival is to drop your panties and beg for them to be gentle cause it's your first time).

Jesus Christ, are you even reading my statements? Look. Puppets have a neat gimmick: they're chock-full of traps. In actual battle, however, they're incredibly unwieldy to use, take years of practice to even learn how to make, let alone get good with, and aren't even all that effective in high-level combat aside from sneaky traps or else being Sasori-levels of awesome (and note: Sasori used human fucking corpses to make his puppets, which is why they're capable of actually standing up to high-level opponents - short of making human puppets, Tsuki's puppets aren't going to be anywhere near that good).
Puppets are cool, I totally agree. I love the idea of Tsuki having a puppet butler that fights for her while she spams Stellar Release. But in practice, that's just flat-out not going to work for her: even Sasori is pretty shit in combat and he's basically the absolute ultimate pinnacle of skill that you could possibly reach as a puppeteer (c'mon, he gets killed by his own grandma and CANON SAKURA of all people). Puppets are a cool gimmick, but that's all they are.
