>the ultramarines only had like 50k marines at the most though
That's a lot by the end of the siege!

Post-heresy chapters have 1,000 marines in companies, but it seems that drivers/techmarines, apothecaries, fleet crew, recruiters, etc. don’t count. They might have up to 1,500 actual marines, maybe more in the early days. That works with the Ultramarines having about 50k and splitting into 20-30 chapters. The healthier legions split into 4-7 successors, and a few like the Salamanders and Space Wolves had 0-1 successors (granted, the SW probably have ~3,000 marines).
>>

We should roll up a Titan. Also what is a Nemesis and Nightgaunt Titan?

not compared the the traitors. not that it matters, they wouldve destroyed the golden throne. once the golden throne is destroyed it doesnt matter if you threw a million marines at them, because youd be fighting infinite demons and probably even fully manifested chaos gods themselves.

A nemesis is an Imperator without the castle.
Also, is this going to be the Titan that rolls with the League?
>>
>>47776781
In the original Adeptus Titanicus game, every titan was a Warlord titan. Different weapons combinations each had their own class name, like Nemesis or Nightgaunt. Some had more weapons than others; I think the Nemesis was better armed than most. I don’t remember the exact loadouts.

Emps shouldn't have been so drastic when punishing Lorgar, but also he had the two top dickheads of the setting as personal advisors. Worst of all, he actually listened to them instead of punching their heads off like the Lion, so he's still at fault.
I must remind you: not even 40k marines adore the Emperor, unless your motto is "Pray, Kill, Burn!"

> I must remind you: not even 40k marines adore the Emperor, unless your motto is "Pray, Kill, Burn!"

I think the word you're looking for is "worship," since any marine in 40k who doesn't adore the Emperor gets pretty swiftly shuffled onto the Excommunicate Traitoris 'to kill' list.

Even then, your point is moot because there are loads of canonical examples of Space Marine chapters worshipping the Emperor as a god. Get stuffed Truthshitters.

>>47778508
That's pretty bad. I don't know what the deal is with everything needing to be bigger. I suspect that Imperator Titans will be Great Dane sized.
>>
>>47778401
I'm more upset over the tanks/infantry being rescaled (if they do them) than the titans. There were already disputes over titan scales, because the originals were smaller than 6mm and the forumware (Imperial/Chaos only) were truescale 6mm.

GW's Epic flyers were underscale too, and FW's weren't. Shrinkign them is actually pretty common in army-scale games (deliberately), so that airplanes look smaller to simulate being high up and very large vehicles/titans don't take up too much space on the board. In Flames of War, planes are 1/144 while everything else is 1/100.

It was also about cost and metal casting abilities back during the early '90s. An old metal Warlord is 2 3/4" tall (70mm) and was originally US$30 ($45 by the end of Epic's run). The new truescale 8mm Warlord will be 6" tall. If it's as tall as an 40k knight, won't it cost just as much?

The game rules will have to be really good for me to give up my old collection and get into the new stuff.
>>
>>47778471
Just enough to where all the old stuff will look and feel DISTINCTLY out of place.
And as they already admitted, they are simply resizing shit on CAD. They know they could make it the same size as the old shit.
This is a money grab and a nice fuck you all wrapped in one.
>>
>>47778670
The answer is 'yes, it will cost as much as a knight now buy three or five for a mid sized game'.
They have tested the waters and mapped every fucking shoal on this. They know they can get people to pay for it, just like they know making the game this size ensures the 3rd party guys can't compete.
>>

107 marines per company (100 brothers, 4 command, 1 apoth, 1 chap, 1 capt)
7 marines in 10th (10 serg, 1 chap, 1 capt)
? + 7 marines in 1st (? vets, 4 command, 1 apoth, 1 chap, 1 capt)

that's 870 + ?vets combat marines (also scouts but they dont count as full marines yet).

1 forgemaster + 27 techs (3 per company minus the 10th)
1 chief librarian + 10 librarians (varying ranks)
1 chief apothecary + 1 master of sanctity (others are in company org)
1 chapter master + 10 honor guard
Thats 52 command/staff

So now thats 927 marines. Fill in the rest with veterans, or extra staff.
I believe pilots, drivers, gunners and other full marines in vehicles are supposed to be from the tactical reserve companies.

Good summary. Oddly, the 6th ed. 40k SM codex gives Marneus an honor guard of 27 marines that appear to be separate from the rest. Dreadnoughts are in companies, but sometimes they push the companies over 100. Throw in 100 veterans and we're still under 1100 marines, not including scouts/initiates. I suppose a chapters could have hundreds of those… might explain the old Black Templars codex.

I have trouble picturing their ships being crewed by reserve companies - it'd be so difficult to put the company back together again. Hell, the whole concept of reserve companies implies that each chapter has a real strength of 500. That's ridiculous.

FW multiplying a lot of the old numbers by 10 in the HH books makes so much more sense.

Wait, are you that Giga satan who said his time had passed, and you rolled Satan trips again?
>>
>>47779786
>>47780779

Honor Guard aren't a permanent retinue. They often draw their best from the rest of the chapter.

I think the 1000 per chapter thing basically counts the 10 squads of the 10 companies. All Captains, officers, dedicated retinues (command/honor squads on permanent squad duty), interred marines like Dreadnoughts, specialists like armory staff and techmarines, recclusiam chaplains, librarium librarians, apothecarion apothecaries, fleet staff, pilots, etc, don't count.

So really, if you want to find a loophole like the SoB did, you can just get 900 "normal" marines, have infinite scouts, and just shove all your warriors into non-permanent roles like command squads or non-combat staff to bypass the 1000 limit. But the codex probably also says something stupid like all command squads must be 5-10.

Proxying an easily identifiable weapon as a different one doesn't work very well. Against friends, sure, we can keep track of one or two. But in events it's kinda uncool. I'd rather play against a shoddy homemade conversion beamer than a lascannon that isn't.
>>

INFINITE DREADNOUGHT CHAPTER
>>
>>47780812

This. While your situation is easy to keep track of (my one single Deimos tank is actually a Conversion Beamer to try out its rules okay?) and I'd be fine with it, the point of WYSIWYG is not to be a strict dick, it's for efficiency and ease of accessibility to vital information that should not and cannot be withheld.

It would be safest if you mark the tank somehow to show it's a conversion beamer, such as by buying a ray gun token or flag and placing it on top of the tank.
>>
>>47780791
I think I might be. I'm going to a new Hell, while the rest of you fight amongst yourselves to have my old throne. Giga-Hell's going to have a water park by the time I'm done with it.
>>
>>47780779

Thanks. Yeah, I'm assuming most chapters will deviate from my general list. Like more honor guard, librarians, whatever.

Also, I agree with you about the pilots and stuff. I meant more of small vehicles like probably thunderhawk and down. But it still doesn't make much sense since if you had 10 rhinos for each company, thats already 90+ marines just as dedicated drivers.

I always imagined that dedicated drivers and pilots probably didn't count towards the 1000. Maybe they are not full fledged marines? Like scouts or maybe even normal humans in power armor like sisters of battle or inquisitors that could be failed initiates.

Or the 1000 probably means more of fighting strength as others have mentioned. 90-100 squads of 10 marines plus command and staff.
>>
>>47781037
I think the techies are the pilots. But I have seen one non-techmarine Chaos pilot picture.
>>
>>47780810

I did not know that about the Honor Guard. Would they still wear their company number on their armor while they serve on the honor guard? actually, now that I think about it, it's prbably more like a full squad from the 1st. Also, I agree with you that 1000 men is probably just a rough estimate to show that chapters"shouldnt" have more than 100 squads of 10 men rather than a hard cap of how many marines are allowed in a chapter.
>>

It seems like HG are so pimped up that they'd naturally have so much bling their company would be irrelevant, or most likely, many HG will come from 1st Co anyways.

Here's the passage from wiki, which should be accurate as it sounds like the 5E fluff. Note how it says the HG are even better than captains and company champions, guys who don't typically display company numbers due to being too high of a rank to need to and tend to display personal heraldry instead.

Veteran Space Marines with centuries of service and multiple commendations and decorations are sometimes awarded the chance to serve in their Chapter's Honour Guard. Honour Guards are stoic and spiritually solemn individuals when at rest in their Chapter's fortress-monastery, but ferocious and unyielding in battle. Each has received the very highest honours that his Battle-Brothers can bestow, performing deeds the likes of which lesser men can only dream. Indeed, it is said that each member of a a Chapter's Honour Guard has earned more commendations and glories in a lifetime's service than a whole company of Space Marines from any other Chapter, and that each individual has slain more foes than an entire regiment of Imperial Guardsmen. So steeped are the Honour Guard in the art of war that their understanding of tactical and strategic combat commonly outstrips even the experience of the Chapter's company captains.

How do people feel about proxying an entire army? As in, hey I want to play my SM army as a chaos army just to try it out, or my 40k army as a 30k army for today. Outriders are more of a melee option and jetbikes are shooty, so outriders are definitely a better choice for WB.

Would a Shattered Legion with a WS warlord be able to apply Chogorian Brotherhood to the whole army? Otherwise, use Armored Spearhead and deal with having to take some Predators in addition to the outriders.

Zone Mortalis 1000pts force, meant to be a foundation for the Ironwing Protocol:

Legiones Astartes(Dark Angels)
Rite of War: Chosen Duty

HQ:
Delegatus w/Terranic GS, AA, Volkite Charger, Refractor field

Moritat w/paired Volkite Serpentas, AA

Troop:
Legion Veterans /10man

Heavy support:
Heavy Support Squad /5man
- 5x Heavy flamer
- Sergeant- Artificer armour, melta bombs

Points: 1000/1000

Any suggestions?
I realise I'm on the wrong side of model/unit count and the enemy may win on Chosen Duty/Covenant of Death rules, but I like being on the edge as these are supposed to represent a Dreadwing strike force.
So far my only opponent is a Salamanders player who likes Terminators, we have 2 BaC sets and a Marine tactical squad available.

Notice how anon correctly omits black from the recipe. Sure, you could base black, but it's a huge pain in the dick and totally unnecessary.
Base brown or a mid grey, not black.

Or, you know, you do you. Black's just a really shit base layer to work with I find.

>>
>>47783903
You know what, I recently found an old can of GW Skull White spray, used it on some tanks and it was the best undercoat I've seen in ages. I tend to use Tamiya spray paints as that's what my local hobby store sells but it's not as receptive to thin paint layers as the GW.

Ask /WIP/ but I think popular consensus is Krylon, and Testors. Good value for money, excellent for acrylics.
>>
>>47783935
I appreciate it. I'm so damn disappointed..for some reason I didn't think painting yellow (on black for that matter) could be THAT hard to make tabletop quality. but even with my low standards this dude looks like shit. like so bad I don't even wanna show you guys as a joke.
>>
>>47784015
Dude, don't sweat it, we all started out somewhere and yellow's on the trickier end of the spectrum to do well.

It's a bit of a meme on tg but seriously, thin your paints. 3 thin layers will look 10 times better than one thick one. I really like the yellow foundation paints for the yellow basecoat. Still thin them, but go steady. One or two layers of that, then one or two layers of a brighter yellow on the surfaces that would be more exposed to light and less exposed to dirt and grime - tops of pauldrons, forearms, power packs and helmets.
You could wash the model with a watered-down Agrax Earthshade or whatever it might be called now either after the application of the foundation paint layer, or after you've applied the lighter colour. But unless you're pinpoint with the brown wash, you're going to want to touch up the model with your highlight colour afterwards.

Practice makes perfect man. Find what works for you, be patient.
>>
>>47782620
If you're playing against salamanders, why take heavy flamers? Also is that a special ZM force org chart as I see you've only got 1 troop choice, and if it is I'm pretty sure you can only take RoWs with the regular force org

I can't fault you for using Destroyers, as they're rad as shit (speaking of, where are the rad 'nades?), but hand flamers probably are't the best choice if your main opposition is Salamanders - use some of that 1st Legion tech and go with Volkites (further stressing that they're the Mortariat's guys) or DA Plasma.
>>

>>
>>47784143
>>47784200
I totally forgot about the effect of flamers on Salamanders, although it's not a big deal because I prefer friendly games.
Weren't rites made available for smaller points games since Delegatus got official rules. But yeah, might as well go with more volkite since it's my favourite.
Except there's some fluff constraint in that boltgun is Terran teck while volkite is Martian and, though some Dark Angels definitely had access to it, the legion had majorly Terran roots in tech.
>>
>>47784390
I was more asking why you only have one troop choice when you need two for a regular force org

And if you want you could scrape together 25pts and take Heavy bolters with acid shells on your heavy support squad, which are pretty fun to use and fluffy while you're at it
>>
>>47784416
The one troop choice is because of the Zone Mortalis FOC. If it can't be combined with rites I guess I'm ditching the Vets, but as you suggested, then I can take acid heavy bolters because that'll save me some points.

>Last week I rolled on here what legion they'd be before I knew it was twins and it turned out to be Alpha Legion, funnily enough.
I remember that. I found that funny.
>>
So, what's the general consensus on Blackshields? I want to build an army, but I can't decide between Orphans of War, which look like the most useful (good morale and pseudo PE make them reliable) , or Outlanders /w the Nemean Reaver so I can have a non-shit HQ (the deepstriking looks rather dangerous, but helps counteract the no pods thing, and while deathlocks are meh, the rad grenade option is sweet).

What are your thoughts?
>>

You don't need AP 2 at initiative in order to have a non-shit HQ. Paragon blades aren't decisive weapons since they only wound marines on a 3+ and have a low chance of killing ICs in one phase while fists and hammers cause instant death to marines. Put simply paragon blades are only useful if you want to cut through units of terminators without dying 1v1 involving independent characters it isn't particularly useful.

I personally run my blackshields as +1 S/T chymeriae use lots of bikes for glorious T6 and make heavy use of power axes and power fists since the former are S 6 and the latter can ID biker praetors. Damn shame blackshields have no access to WS 5 units, otherwise I would field the +1 WS/BS chymeria for tons of WS 6 super soldiers.

Breachers with death seekers creates budget Iron Hand immortals.

Bretty gud

All of my yes.

I just read this and it makes no fucking sense

a few bolters wouldn't kill fucking Angron, he would murder those marines in seconds not to mention that if he killed Russ first those Space Wolves would have an even harder time, the death of a primarch always has a strong negative effect on the whole legion

Angron is right and Russ just lost, ADB tried to tell some moral but it just doesn't work with both the WE and Angron winning the battle, if one of those was loosing yeah it makes sense but that's get in the way of his Angron and WE wank

I just played my first ever zone mortalis match. Was my opponent a massive piece of shit or I was just unlucky?

I had a SoH delegatus with some regular cataphractii terminators and one veteran unit.

He had a Blood Angels moritat, a delegatus, and a whole blob of cataphractii.

His moritat used a relic that let him phase through walls right up to my terminators and he basically flamed most of them off except for the delegatus.

Then my delegatus joined with the vets, and challenged his delegatus who had the blade of perdition. So he got a whole pile of wounds on me and he said that they spill over into my squad. Like for every hit of the fucking blade he choked down multiple vets.

What the bloody fuck?
>>
>>47790405
He was a colossal dick, especially if he actually used the infinite hits moritat hand flamer bullshit. If someone did that moritat thing on me I would have just picked up my shit and left the game.

I just don't see the -2 ld ever being worth taking option 2 chymeriae. Even the -1 init and charge/run makes me skeptical of option 1, but I admit I never thought of running then as bikers. Are they effective?
My problem with Reaver Lords is how expensive they are. I guess the bike/jet bike option is nice, but overall he's just plain worse than a pastor.

>>47790274
I just don't get fnp 6+. It's so unreliable, I just don't see the point.
>>
>>47790405
>OP Sword of double wounding
>Exploit Moritat with the relic specifically designed for ZM
What do you think?
Wounds do spill onto the unit, though.
>>
>>47790590
>>47790405

Worth noting that Deathfire doesn't explode into killing multiple models per swing. Every Wound counts for 2 and so it's really good for pulling down characters. However it triggers on Wounds and not Hits, so essentially you're inflicting 2 wounds to every Veteran, with overkill rather than splash wounds.

>Are they effective?
It takes like 40 BS 4 bolter shots to bring down a single T6 biker with FnP. The fact that they are S 5 and have access to power axes (and since they are slower they don't lose much by taking them) which make them str 6 they can tear through marines very effectively.

I often make them into a pretty lethal death star
>Reaver lord with artificer armour, power fist, lightning claw, iron halo, cyber familiar, digital lasers, and bike
>Primus medicae with bike and power fist
>Centurion with bike and power fist
>10 bikes, sergeant gets a fist, three of them get axes
On the charge my unit gets 18 str 10 AP 2 attacks, 9 str 6 AP 2 attacks, and 18 str 5 attacks. Plus my reaver lord is tough as nails T 6 2+/3++ with 7 str 10 AP 2 attacks on the charge. Enemy pours fire onto the unit but they almost always get their FnP since even str 10 doesn't ID them and when they finally close with the enemy they rip them apart. Also stacks hilariously with the void shield harness.

As for the +1 WS/BS it doesn't look good but the idea of fielding tons of WS 6 marines simply sounds glorious.

Where are you finding After Desh'ea as an audiobook? Can't seem to find it anywhere, and can't find Lord of the Red Sands either...

OK that's good to know. I don't have book 4 and never looked too much into the relics, the most recent thing I remember is that the FAQ made them optional with the opponent's permission rather than a free for all grab bag.

And yeah my question about the spillover is about him killing two veterans per hit. He was multiplying his wounds based on successful hits, e.g. "I hit you three times, that's six to wounds, and now that's six dead veterans".
>>
>>47789916
Twins? Well, at least Alpharius shortens to Alfie. Not sure how you make Omegon sound normal! 'Omie?

>>47790405
The whole point of ZM is the heavy terrain. Being able to phase through is, almost by definition, game-breaking. That's why relics now require your opponent's permission to be taken (they do, right?). They make for a good story, but an imbalanced game.
>>
>>47790686
What do you run for troops?
It's too bad you can't attach apothecaries to Marauder squads. Massed T5 w/ fnp would be nasty.
>>
>>47786239
S 10 Ordnance is good for penetrating armor. And a blob of Blood Claws.
>>
>>47790780
Best thing to do with relics is have a flexible 40 points across your army and if you know someone is bringing a cheese relic buy your HQ the nanite blaster. Fight fire with grey goo, of course you could both be reasonable and recognise that, while some legions relics are better than others, the general relics are pretty much all op in some way.

After Desh'ea is in Tales of Heresy. KAT has it. Not sure about the other one. Have you checked BL to see which anthology it is in, and if there is an audio version?

Small squads of ten marauders with a couple power axes, a power fist, and sometimes heavy chainswords for everyone else. A T5 unit with lots of Str 6 attacks is generally scary enough that opponents tend to avoid them or only charge them with dedicated melee units.

Generally my goal is to send my bikers down the middle drawing fire and charging high value targets, marauders move up the table and capture objectives, charging anything that gets in their way (8 str 6 power axe and 4 str 10 power fist attacks on the charge kill 5 or 6 marines on average). Besides that I tend to run a couple smaller bike squadrons to pick off anything too small for my death star to be bothered with (squad of six still has two str 6 axes and a str 10 fist). Main problems with the list are that I have no ranged anti-tank (although the fists tend to kill tanks fairly well and I sacrifice some stuff for meltabombs on the bikes if I know I am facing tough vehicles) and literally no means of dealing with flyers so I just ignore them and tank whatever they shoot at me.

Well, shit. I came here to trey and get advice on choosing between two options, but now you're making me consider a third option.
Thank you for the help; you've given me a lot to think about.
>>
>>47791176
Also I have a question. There's nothing preventing you from taking multiple reavers, no 1 per 1k like praetors right? If so I may start running a just for fun list that consists of three reavers each leading a tiny bike squadron with just three or six dudes. Each reaver can butcher most praetor builds (T 6, 3++ means even sigismund barely kills them on average before they get to hit and a 7 attack praetor charging them with a paragon blade inflicts like 0.36 unsaved wounds on average) and will have a small entourage that can help damage whatever they charge before they die.
>>
>>47791299
The 1 per 1000pts is for models with Master of the Legion specifically. I don't have book 6, but if Reavers don't have MotL, you can take more than one and any points level.
>>
>>47790791
Yeah, I'm not sure either! Well, I'll have all the time in the world to think and discuss names.
>>
>>47791427

you name them Alpharius and Omegon as their second name.
>>
>>47791452
Funny to say, but they'd probably grow up resenting it. I know a guy who hates Star Trek becausehis patents named him Wesley.

Leave the primarch names for nicknames.
>>
>>47791360
Neat. Isn't going to be a good build but it will be fun as hell. Might decide to keep the single death star but with three of the super reavers (21 WS6 S10 AP 2 attacks on the charge plus a squad of bikers)
>>
>>47791452
I'd probably just keep that as a little in-joke for my husband and I.

>>47791500
>Wesley
That sounds like a normal enough name to me, honestly.
>>
>>47791534
But he's named for Wesley Crusher.
>>
>>47791557
Oh. I honestly forgot about him.

If you ignore that little bit though, it does sound like a normal name.
