Well, I'll be damned. This thing turned out to be more useful than I thought. Not only is that magnification useful to find those annoying little hairs or mold lines, the light is also really bright.

On a completely different note, any suggestions for colours for a Van Saar gang? Just secured myself a bunch of third and fourth generation Genestealer hybrids as well as a Primus for basically nothing, and they'd make perfect Van Saar with a few headswaps.

Hey /tg/,

making progress on my trench network. Hand painted the exposed foam ends and then spray painted the inner corrugated cardboard sides to help avoid them warming when I add paint.

Here you can see a bunch of the colours and washes I will be utilizing.
I am doing the corrugated steel that is rusted with a reddish brown and some oranges here and there.

Any suggestions before I move forward?
Thanks.

I ended with this. It's directly under the light so it's a lot darker IRL, I'll do about half as many layers to avoid having such a dark blue I think.

I'll just have to fo the details and the eyes I guess. Wish me luck.
>>
>>47745636
Well I wanted to say that before yiu started painting but I figured it'd be silly but still:

I think the ground of your trench is too even if you see what I mean. It's a hole in the earth, I would have tried to put some uneven ground here and there, yo make it more realistic.
>>

Why didn't you say it then? haha
Yeah, if they were built into a table then there definitely would have been much more depth, but as they lay on top of the battlefield, I only gave myself an inch of height to work with else the mounds on the sides would have been huge and really hurt that realistic element. Twas the trade off.

I still don't understandhow the anon managed to have such a uniform and strong blue in 2 layers.
Like, fuck, mine is closer to GK than an AL after 2 glazes.
I know that he used an airbrush for the silver, but you don't apply glazes with an aibrush as well right?

I'll see how it looks with around half as many layers.

Prime Krylon Silver Spray Paint+Primer. It's almost white silver. Way brighter than Runefang.

First layer
5:2 Lahmian Medium to Asurmen Blue
Second Layer
5:2 Lamian Medium to Asurmen Blue
Dry Brush Runefang lightly
5:1 Lahmian Medium to Asurmen Blue
Dry brush lightly Runefang

Hope that helps you achieve what you are trying to do with your model.
The gold is the same but with Gryphonne Sepia instead of Blue.

Your sculpting looks pretty good so far. If you intend to use this for kill team or something keep it up.

If you intend to make an army of these you're putting a lot of work into something that's only going to get harder. What are you going to do about vehicles? Did you plan to make rhino's out of land raiders and drop pods out of plasticard?

I made this guy more than three years ago by lengthening the legs, thighs, waist, forearms, widening the chest, and buffing the legs up with greenstuff. It was a lot of work and it wasn't worth it. Every release from GW and FW will be incompatible with what you make and you're mostly going to be playing against another marine army anyway.

I would dare say it's the pic, this one has fewer layers than the other, I'll be more careful around the head from now on though. The back of the neck is always a pain, since there's so little space, it makes some sort of bridge between the back of the head and the gorget when I apply paint here.
Thanks for pointing it out.

Looking at this, I have a very stupid question:

What's the difference between watered down abaddon black and Nuln noil?
Aren't they both diluted liquidy black paint?
>>
>>47746913
Consistency. A thinned Abby black will apply normally to the surface, but Nuln oil will just flow with gravity down the surface until it settles.
>>
So, /wip/, I have a question.

I'm making a spidery face, with a fuckton of eyes. How do I do it?

I'm thinking miliput base, with greenstuff to get the eyes and stuff in, but I need a way to sculpt on the eyes and make 'em look good or alright. The other thing is the mouth, which will also be a pain.

Personally I'd use tiny beads or something like that for the eyes and sculpt the face around that.
What materials you use depends on how big it's supposed to be I guess.

If you are not sure how to approach this you could also take a spider miniature and hack it's head off and just use that.
Depending on what size of spider head you need it should be easy enough to find something useful. Reaper and other manufacturers that you could use for D&D or pathfinder will have various sizes of spiders as does GW in their AoS and LotR lines.
>>
>>47747441
The spider in question is currently the Reaper spider demoness. She's going to have a spider face attached at the front, and a few other tweaks to get the right look.

I do have a spare one of their filth beasts. I might chop off its face and use it to get the main 'mouth' set up...

Why aren't you reviewing them before uploading?

You aren't just using your camera app right off the upload picture button are you?
>>
>>47749018
USB cable is frayed and broken, requires being cradled like a spoiled cock to connect to the laptop and I've actually run out of room on my phone's internal storage so getting a picture taken is dubious at best since it refuses to store to my SD card.

So I use the inline button (which saves to SD card for god knows why but hey), I look at it on my standard phone screen, it seems fine, I hit go.

The only reason I tripped up this time was because I took it landscape and then it switched to portrait and it became even more miniaturized, hiding the blurriness
>>
>>47748904
Breath. Take a second and look up how to take a proper pic of a mini if you have to. If the image looks blurry on your screen, I have a surprise for you, but its going to look blurry on ours even after you upload it to magic internet land.

First of all, experiment and take some pics until you can get one that is actually in focus.

You are not a photographer with a 1000$ macro lense are you? Then get back from that model. You don't have to take the photo from an inch away (and will always have problems with focus on your phone that way).

Consider a timer for the picture. Consider propping it on something so your hands are not moving. If you have to hold it, breathe OUT slowly as you take the picture. You are more steady at that moment. That tip may help you kill a man to save your life some day ;)

Next, your image resolution when you upload is way too large. The model ends up being like 2 feet tall at your resolution. Its like watching a movie from the front row. Its hard to take everything in and obviously every little mistake that you wouldn't ever notice on the model becomes like 3 inches big.

So, take the pic further back, focused, with lots of dead space around it.

Open it in an image editor, auto adjust "levels" to let the program do the work of correcting colours that your phone didnt grab properly in preprocessing, crop the dead space around the model, resize it to like a width of 800 pixels.

This photo is after processing to upload to WIP.
I also export them from GIMP at 50% quality. Why? Because the file was 1.9MB and now it is 68.7kb and if you looked at the two images side by side, you couldn't tell the difference.

The next image will be this same picture, but PREprocessing (that is, straight from my phone).

protip: I have dropbox on my phone and computers. The instant I take a picture it is instantly transferred to all my systems.

I thought about thought; looking at the new Centos figure the way Citadel had it painted up for the 100th North America store opening gave me a similar idea... but I went back to my inspiration on this one.

I may try that with some other figures to see how I like it and end up coming back to this one and changing it.

>>
>>47750046
I keep it simple. Say you're doing the eyes green. Take two greens a dark one, and one 2-4 steps lighter. Paint the lens with the dark one, let it dry, then pick a spot and put a little swish or smudge of the lighter one on. Then take white and put it opposite the lighter color. So if the lighter color is toward the back of the lens, put the white dot towards the front of the lens - and vice versa.

For round lenses like on Scions, just put the light smudge in the center, and the white dot in the center of that.

There are variations to the technique. Youtube some videos and have fun finding your own way.

Paint them like gems with successive layers and highlights. The example of the Sanguinary Priest in the Blood Angels book is a simplified version of this - it leaves out the highest highlights using a pure white colour - but it's along the lines of what >>47750007 is referring to.

Oh yeah, and as I am painting these...
I thought I might share something that some of you don't know, but may find very useful. Especially at these early stages in making terrain.

A little bit of dish soap helps break the surface tension so you can get into the cracks and crevasses. I have a spray bottle of water with a little bit of dish soap. I either shake it up and spray it on the piece (like rock faces), or spray into my paint on my palette and mix it in.

I have also used this in the past on models when I want to make sure paint shoots into the corners and nothing stays on the surface.

So I'm starting on some Dire Avengers today, and I'm not sure which primer to use, black or white. I guess black, seeing as there's no yellow on them?

Simply, black is easier to work with, but white gives a brighter effect if you are looking for it. But if you are planning yo do very light colours with black you will have to tone down using progressively lighter colours.(this goes double with yellow white and some reds which have problems covering, but can be primed black if you do it well)

Sure. It's based on a reular warbike, with the forks cut off and glued back at a steeper angle and turned a bit. The sidecar is based on the trukk gunner cupola thingy, attached to the body on a piece of wire simulating a frame of sorts. From there it's mostly a bunch of bits to detail it up. The gunner is a crew torso from the battlewagon kit I think, with legs added to it, since both are removable for gameplay purposes.

Also, WIP of a trukk.

For Genestealer Cults you have 6 unique models in a 12 man unit.

Monopose stuff tends to have a better pose than more flexible kits anyway. You sacrifice a little variety and customisation for minis that look a bit better. See the genestealer boxed set and standard termies as opposed to the ones that come with Space Hulk.

It's useful, just not good if it's parroted like the meme it has been sometimes. The paint around the lower cape area and the face are a bit too thick and losing detail. It's not awful for a beginner, I've seen much worse. Take a look at my first Dark Vengeance kit, and many considered that pretty good considering that was my second box ever.
>>
>>47754080
Is that the soft kind of plastic which you can kinda bend? I have never painted any models with that plastic but when I look at them the paint always looks sheeny for some reason, which to me makes it look thicker.

>Face is a bit bad, based it a dark color and then I just couldn't get cadian flesh onto the nose and brow, just cannot for the life of me get a highlight to stick where Im brushing it.

The hem was a different problem, was trying to texture the blue part and it had a bad habit of dripping down onto the hem when I'm not looking (be it me leaving it there to dry as I watch anime or from me turning it every which way to try and paint the arm and face beneath the shield) and I kept trying to patch the problems so that's what I get for trying to add a finishing detail before the finish

The answers to those are not "thin your paints"

This probably illustrates my point a bit better. Photography is still trash, but this was months ago.
>>
>>47754134
You may have thinned it, but if it's dripping you are using too much dude.
>>
>>47754164
too much water or too much paint

Aside from the occasional dexterity fuck up and just hitting the hem with the brush, what was more specfically happening with the hem was trying to put a vertical line through the crease of the skirt and then it all joined together through surface tension and sagged down onto the hem.

The face specifically was a pain in the ass because no matter how much I thinned or didn't or how much I brushed on or didn't, until the very last touch of the model with a thick paint applied as thin as I could, the paint 100% of the time dropped off the nose and brow and into the pockets of the eyes.

>Point stands, "thin your paints" is useless advice in my case

>>
>>47754189
Aside from the meme, 'think your paints' is very good advice.

Remember that the direction of your brush strokes influence where the pigment and paint will be thickest, so perhaps you could have stroked away from the brow to prevent your drippage.
(That's also a good blending tip)

And why did you do a final thick/thin layer of paint?

>And why did you do a final thick/thin layer of paint?
On the face? Because it was still inverse highlighted, his brow was dark when it should have been light because the shape of the face kept sucking the layer paint away from where I was trying to apply it. I stopped painting when it didn't look like a cartoon skull.
>>
>>47752034
how did you do the blending?
>>
>>47754274
scibor miniatures, they do offbrand single models, mostly space marines themed around romans, greeks, spartans etc. the models tend to be very expensive, but my local hobby store is having end of financial year sale, so i managed to snag some at something like half the cost price.

the website lists them around 25-35 euro a model, I grabbed them and some larger ones around 3-9 AUD
>>
>>47754327
Blending does explain itself
>>
>>47754367
No, I asked how. There are many different methods of blending.
>>
>>47751605
I have about 6 custom so far plus most of the overmatch box done. but I'm on holidays away so no pix for a fortnight.

My best bet is look up each chapter and there general theme (weaponry, shoulder pad, head). Then compare it to what spare bits you have and your converting skills. you want them to be stereotypical to their chapter. Let's take say Crimson fists. They hate orks, they are big on sternguard, and they are Spanish inspired names. So I'd model them like Pedro kantor or captain Cortez. Black hair, tanned skin, ork skull decorations, combi-bolter.

Damn, not bad quality. I've been looking for a third party mini to serve as a Chaos lord.
>>
>>47754412
i wish i could afford them too, i am now torn as fuck between buying my hobbby tools i need and paints or get some kromlech and micro stuido(if they are the manufacturer, not sure) goblins
>>
>>47754417
Pretty good, the Kantor Blue on the carapace isn't exactly too lively however.
I think you gotta add a little something in the smooth patches so it doesn't look like he's wearing a Kantor Blue onesie.
The black bits and the purple bits look fine however.
>>
>>47754421
I thought the same, but be warned. Scribor mini's are HUGE. I ordered the demon lord guy on your picture, only to find out that he's about as large as a demon price. So they really don't work to well with GW's scale, imho.
>>
>>47754382
Looks like layering blending.
>>
>>47754450
would work well as true scale next to an imperial guard however.
>>
>>47754445
any thoughts on what to do with it?

That's a little bit of a shame, but it'd depend how badly the scale is. Being quite big is alright for me since it'd be a giant lord and I'm not a competitive player.
>>
>>47754451
no brush marks though, looks more like wet blend but hard to tell because blurry as fuck picture.
>>
>>47754473
I'll try to snap a comparative picture this evening, if that would be of any help.
>>
>>47754417
i don't like tht yo made the arms the colour of the carapace,it's ok if you like it, but he really looks like he is wearing a suit
>>
>>47754467
Since you already have some highlights on the blue, you could make the recesses of the blue darker.
>>

>>47754463
well when i got my 'little' scibors, the one i posted, it stands about twice as tall as an astartes, so it makes for a good Custodes (which is how i'm painting them) the cruiser mech scibors are primarch size.
this is the only photo I have sorry, but you can tell from the size of the head the scale of the model.
>>
>>47754486
Its hard to see brush strokes with layer blend if the paint if thinned correctly, and yeah pic is blurry and mini is far off.
>>
>>47754495
thanks, good idea.
>>
>>47754490
Would appreciate it.
>>47754501
Damn, they really are massive. Custodes are pretty sweet as an idea, though.
>>
>>47754492
Its his pajamas

Nah, its the Space Hulk colour scheme. Same as on the box.
>>
>>47754546
thanks. I got my hours at work slashed so hopefully i'll have them finished in a couple of days. I'll try to post them here so you guys can see how they turn out. I based the armour in warplock bronze, and i'm tossing up between layering it with brass scorpion, washing it and leaving it warplock bronze, or layering it in retributor armour for a really bright gold.

i think ill wash it, leave it as warplock, and do the detailwork in retributor.

Glad you decided to keep the nipple tassels even though it gets pointed out every time you update.

Anybody know where one could obtain decent quality 28mm skeleton models?
>>
>>47754742
Mantic's are fairly good if you give them a headswap.
>>
>>47754742
CHINA
>>
>>47754799
What's the consensus on Mantic miniatures? I've heard (and my eyes confirmed) that their elves are shit and undead are nice.
I've taken a look at their orcs, goblins and dwarves and they seem nice enough, but I haven't had the opportunity to see them in person.
Also what kind of material are they made of?
I'm thinking about starting a new army for WHFB and I'm searching for nice alternates.
>>
>>47754828
There comes a point when it's just not an advantage, surely? GW skellies are £15 for 10, less if you can find somewhere doing the standard 20-25% discount, and Mantic skellies are even less. So is china really going to be so much cheap that it's worth fucking about with cancer-resin over plastic?
>>
>>47754799
This. Mantic used to sell a shitload of them for pretty cheap, too, although I haven't checked in a bit.
>>
>>47754881
From just hearing about them: they're a mixed back. Like you said, they have varying quality. The skeletons are nice but are made a lot better by a head swap with GW skellies.
>>
>>47754903
mixed bag*

>Has anyone here worked on the Deathwatch Overkill box at all?

Define "work". If you mean "sell off the parts you didn't want and keep the parts you did", then yeah, I worked with it a bit.

>Picking it up when my next paycheck comes in, is it true that they're all monopose minis?

It might as well be true. You can do some things like change the angle of some of the heads and arms slightly, but that's about it. The Space Marine models even have square shoulder pegs so their arms line up in the "correct" positions to achieve the dynamic poses their sculptors intended. Since they're all plastic, though, a bit of work with a knife and maybe some bitz swapping could get you away from that in a few cases.

>>47753815
>Depending on how they're posed, I might dip my hand into green stuff for the first time.

The guys with Third World Internet are gonna hate me for posting a 4MB image, but I think it will benefit you, anon.

Done the basecoat, I think next step is washing. Based in Kantor Blue, haven't got a darker shade of blue yet; mix in black or grey to get a darker colour? I have Abaddon Black, Eshin Grey and Dawnstone. Hoping this wash works, the last one was an unmitigated disaster.
>>
>>47754881
The New Sci-fi (indeed, almost all of the hard-plastic sci-fi) stuff is good. Some of the fantasy is great and some is bad... none worse than the goblins though. The res-stic stuff is a bit of a pain to work with, certainly compared to the material Prodos has started using recently.

>>47754943
Damn, I'm glad I went Eldar over 'Nids, that looks like a fucking jigsaw puzzle

Not-lizardmen are an 80s kind of """good"""
Everything else except their undead is hideous
