Haven't seen one of these in a while, and with the new sets out and about, I figured we could kick off another one.
I'm starting with my all time personal favorite; Gift of Orzhova.
>Personal attachment to this card because it reminds me of my late father
>He was a stained glass master, doing work for churches and such
>He taught me the trade when I was just a lad, and after he passed his things sat for years in the garage
>After I got back into Magic, I saw this card and just welled up with emotions
>Now I'm getting back into stained glass as a hobby / side income
>And the foil truly shows this card's beauty
>Pic not mine, but God do I want one
i really like the bfz full art lands
Ice Age had some really metal art.
Probably my favorite nonland art here.
>>47743284
The artists notes for that mention the glow in her eyes is Avacyn which makes it pretty cool
>>47742302
>No cereal bowl island
Patrician taste.
I always wanted to make Thraben Valiant into a playmat but I can never get it to fit properly.
>>47743352
Why are people so obsessed with the bowl island?
>>47743441
I have no clue, there's nothing particularly fantastic about it.
I more appreciate architectural lands.
>>47743441
Because it's a meme.
>>47743284
Waifufags pls go
>>47743522
The thing with architectural lands is that swamps, mountains and plains are hard to translate into buildings
I think this cards name is "Dawnlight Invoker" or something like that.
>>47743658
Yeah they definitely took some liberties to do them, but I think they came out great.
>>47743038
i've always liked the contrast magic has with its art themes. I think the old cards that were hand drawn and reprinted looked better, but the new computer made ones are pretty badass too.
this was my fav card growing up.
>>47743702
tersh
>>47743064
No love for poor old Mr.Myrfors :(
>>47743685
They are great indeed. For Return to Return to Ravnica, they should go for borderless full art lands, that would be lovely
>>47743658
Ravnica did a great job with architectural lands. Isn't as hard as people might think it would be.
There's quite a bit of untapped potential with lands like these, for instance, a village living on the side of a cliff for mountains, a Blight town like place for swamps, etc.
>>47743729
The oldschool geeky-esque art really fits the card
>>47743702
Going on that note, which do you guys like better generally? Older or newer art?
I feel as if the older style of art was more neat in some cases, with the art fitting the the card's name and effects a lot more literally. Has a better narrative. On the other hand, the newer art does a better job sticking to overall themes as well as better standalone pieces.
>>47743833
I don't care about generally. Some old cards I like, some I despise, most I don't care about. Same thing as new ones.
all of the angel cards are pretty good. are there any male angels tho? I can't remember ever seeing one.
>>47743770
They did a great job, that's for sure, but cards like pic related don't quite convey the "I'm a plain" message Lorwyn and other planes with a nature centered art convey
They are still awesome, though
Ugh, fucking millennials and their nuMagic art.
Have some genuinely good art.
>>47743878
Heh.
>>47743833
its a toss up for me, id have to agree with what >>47743860
says. I judge the cards individually and if I like them I like them. the old pastel drawings look great, and so do the new computer drawn ones. this is one of my fav card arts from the new generations.
>>47743833
Old cards tend to have memorable art, sometimes it was great, sometimes it was lame.
Newer cards have really good art overall, but have lost part of its charm.
Pic somewhat related
I found this in my friend's binder and my jaw dropped immediately. This image doesnt do justice, the art looks more stunning in person.
>>47743990
Same pic, better res, Anon
I like it too
>>47743990
I also love everything Rebecca Guay does, she is probably my favorite artist. I love this card, the girl looks so innocent and happy. and the scattered toys and background color gives me childhood feels.
>>47743662
Dawn GLARE invoker
>>47744020
(forgot image)
>>47743861
Holy fuck, I've never realized that that 99% of all of MTG's angels are female.
>>47743833
You're totally incorrect
Old art absolutely does not better fit the card and flavor
I prefer old art to but I don't understand how a person could be this wrong
>>47744034
Oh yes, one more for now. This image has amazing colors that fit perfectly together (which also correspond with the mana), and the colors also produce the mood of the character on the card.
>>47744040
Okay, mind telling me why you disagree?
>>47744040
Absolutelt agree.
Old art is charming and unique, but some arts don't even make fucking sense, pic related.
>>47743861
>>47744035
That's by intent. All angels are female and all demons are male.
>>47743878
I really do miss the more conceptual nature of older art.
>>47744085
That rule is further emphasised by the fact one of the few male angels (are there more? Can't say for sure) came out precisely in a set about parallel timelines.
For a block overall I have to go with Kamigawa though. It really gave the sense that they were fighting something that could not be comprehended or defeated.
>>47744181
I believe this is the only other male angel in existence.
>>47743861
>>47744035
>>47744181
>>47744389
Can't help but feel that there is a ton of untapped design space for angels and demons. I'd be all over a set if they had angels look something like pic related.
Sadly, it's gonna be a little bit before we get anything with angels/demons in the spotlight with Wizards going Hollywood the last year or so.
One of my favourite MTG artworks, too bad it was wasted on a bad creature :(
>>47744469
Demons really benefit from weird designs
>>47744486
Her left leg is missing.
>>47745164
Because she has no legs, she has a mermaid tail
>>47744081
I mean there are plenty of cases where you are right, but this is not one of them. Stasis' art fits the card perfectly.
>>47743861
There was one angel in Planar Chaos that was male.
>>47743522
>>47743658
My niggas, I love the Ravnica lands and would love to see more lands featuring architecture.
>>47743522
Do you have a link to these? I love all of Ravnica's lands.
>>47745778
Does it? Explain, because it's my favorite art, but I don't really think it's fitting
>>47743313
He's selling it on a playmat now, hoping to pick one up.
I have a foil Phyrexian Unlife and I'm thoroughly convinced it is the best foil in the history of the game.
>>47742248
You should look into a foil copy of Godless Shrine from Gatecrash. It should be right up your alley. Might be kind of expensive, though.
ravnica has some great art in general
>>47743918
Phil Foglio is honestly one of my favorite Magic artists
My current favorite artist is Nils Hamm, his work is actually perfectly ethereal and breathtaking for the sets he draws for. He normally gets black and red cards, but I feel that he really shines when he does white and green.
My recent favorite has to be Seb McKinnon, his stuff feels otherworldly
>niggas hatin' on the bowl
I love it.
>>47743990
>those sandals
Top unf.
>>47750409
He's definitely one of the few above average artists they have. It's a shame that card sucked more ass than a twister at the donkey farm.
I love her.
My favorite lands are ones where the color on the artwork is different than the color it produces. I need to pick up some foil of these.
The purple forest from Innistrad is also a favorite.
Where do you guys get custom playmats?
Merciless Eviction, it's hard to pick a favorite, but it's up there.
>>47750909
I really dislike the unwritten rule where the art now has to reflect the colors of the card. Awful.
>>47751333

>>47744469
That there could work as an angel from New Phyrexia.
>>47744486
I have a foil of this, it's actually quite good.
>>47750409
>two snakes in the god tier art
>the card itself only gives you one snake, that you can only conditionally get, at a whopping six mana cost
WIIIIZAAAAARDS!!!!!!
>>47750359
Both Phil and Kaja are favorites of mine, I don't get why they are hated so much
>>47750412
Does that thing flip over when it's full?

>>47743990
>Ghosts in the background
I'm spooked.
>>47751233
Damn, didn't realize the black hole was pulverizing people
The Orzhov are fucking metal
>>47752896
Talking about spooky, this thing used to scare the shit out of my brother back when we were kids
Never knew why
>>47744469
So... like this?
>>47752962
So good.
>>47751898
It really is a picture of someone trapped in a maze, but that maze appears to be made out of intestines. The middle of the art has the outline of a body trapped inside the intestine maze. It's from an early set when artists did whatever the fuck they wanted and it's by Anson Maddocks who did even more of whatever the fuck he wanted than most other artists at the time.
>>47753359
The art is awesome, reminds me of that art with the fetus
>tfw I can't find most of my favorite Lorwyn/Shadowmoor art in high res
It isn't fair. The art direction for the block was phenomenal.
i want this foil so bad
>>47753555
It seems like all the Angels in Innistrad are pretty.
>>47753646
awesome
>>47742248
Got one of these for my Karlov EDH. Best $5 I've spent in a long time
>>47752502
I don't see how anyone could put this card together and think "yeah, that'll do it"
Fuck limited. This card could literally cost 4 less.
>>47753682
Limited results in a huge number of unplayable cards being made. If limited didn't exist, Standard would be a thousand times better and prices on cards would be overall lower. At the same time, limited is an important part of the game's success. The existence of limited has several pros and cons.
>>47753727
Havengul Lich is so fucking radical. Easily one of my favorite cards *and* art.
>>47753712
I don't get why the limited environment needs 5 mana spot removal though. It's not even the mediocrity of the cards that gets me, it's the fact that R&D tries really hard to make them purposefully shit. Did that card really need sorcery speed? Couldn't it always grant a snek? Nope, because limited balance or something? Is it because that shite at common is what makes limited fun?
Could they not balance limited/fun around cards that don't fucking suck?
>>47753734
>>47753746
I like how these two reference each other.
>>47753778
Agreed. The foil is also gorgeous.
>>47752881
I have a copy of every single card they've provided art for.
Yes even Factory.
>>47753571
Normally I think people with fantasy tattoos look like colossal faggots, but damn does that art look good on his arm.
>>47753712
>Limited results in a huge number of unplayable cards being made
That's the excuse WotC uses, but cube draft (where every single card is a bomb) has proven that Limited formats DO NOT actually need any bad cards to exist in the format at all.
Bad cards are actually made for only two reasons:
1) GREED: padding out the packs with unplayables so that people would have to by more packs.
2) INCOMPETENCE: they just fucked up.
My personal favorite card art.
I much prefer old MTG art, even if there were a lot of misses in there, because the general lack of art direction resulted in way more unique and memorable individual pieces. Like, look at this fucking thing. What the hell is even happening in there? It's awesome.
For me, it's Pale Rider. It just looks unsettling, and when I scrolled through the SOI spoilers for the first time, it was this art that caught my eye.
>>47753906
That's neat,man, I envy you
>>47755959
Does he just have a very long, downwards, pointy nose?
>>47743284
Looks too much like that chick from The Bazoople theory
>>47757215
No. Those are slits.
>>47750990
I've gone with inked for mine, mousepads too, no complaints so far.
>>47754532
so what you are saying is you want every card printed to be constructed playable?
>>47753779
You see, this card existed in a pretty great limited format, and although clearly being terrible in the larger scope of magic, and even below average in the context of the set, you'd still play one of these in i'd say 60% of your decks that could cast it.
In a set about playing 3+ colors and paying lots of mana to unmorph fatties, can you not see why R&D wanted unconditional removal to be expensive?
>>47752502
>the card now put X snakes, X being the number of +1/+1 counter
would it become useful or just overpowered?
>>47760191
It still would have been a 6-mana kill spell with an incredibly conditional upside.
>>47753594
I hate how busy this art is, because the creature itself is quite good.
>>47752887
Yeah that's when it taps for mana =)
>>47753771
oros is the guy that made me want to collect his cycle
Elesh Norn is downright creepy but also strangely beautiful.
>>47761642
love this dude
>>47743918
So yeah I cracked my first pack of Eternal Masters today and I thought this foil Dack was pretty beautiful...
kek at everyone saying the old cards had bad art
theres some dope aesthetic hidden gems there
>>47762773
>>47753679
nice, don't see jesper as often as i'd like in these threads
>>47742248
This is in my Daxos The Returned deck and although I have better cards for the slot, I can't take it out because it's so beautiful
>>47750990
I purchased mine from inkedgaming.com
It came out really nice (mine was a high resolution screenshot from Elite Dangerous. The game is shit pile of wasted potential, but it can be pretty).
Just make sure that you have xbawks huge art to submit.
Additionally, the mat is going to stink when you open it up for the first time so be prepared to air it out for a day or so before you intend to use it for gaming.
>>47753555
I've had some luck running MtG card art through waifu2x.
It's an image upscaling program that uses neural networks to redraw an image at a higher resolution. It's the same stuff as google deepdream, except you get huge anime pictures instead of nightmarish dogscapes.
It works best with anime, but magic art works pretty well nine times out of ten.
https://github.com/nagadomi/waifu2x
http://inatsuka.com/extra/koroshell/
The first link has the github source if you want to try your hand at compiling it yourself to take advantage of some of the more advanced features like utilizing your GPU for faster processing times or processing videos.
The second link has the program pre-compiled for windows and paired with a simple gui wrapper for ease of use. You just need to work your way through the moonrunes long enough to download the program and swap the language over to english.
It's not perfect, but it's better than a tiny image that looks all pixelated when you zoom in. Things start looking all soft, almost if if they were drawn with watercolors if you start pushing things too far.
Pic related is your shriekmaw ran through the program with 2x scale and low noise reduction.
>>47763378
idk man
I wish people respected Drew Tucker's art. Not every card is great, but the ones that are I just LOVE.
>>47754532
>cube draft (where every single card is a bomb)
lol ok
Even if that were true, cubes are heavily dependent on the singleton nature of the format for archetype balance. A draft set where you could draft multiple Hymns or Wrath of Gods or whatever would just be kinda filthy
Really love this one.
>>47743441
I actually detest the bowl island
pic related my fav full art island
>>47742248
I like both the flexibility of the card and the artwork. It's among my top 3 eldrazi artworks.
Posting Guay feels like cheating, but here it goes.
>>47764385
And here is my ansolute favorite. I think its the card that embodies how otherworldly the Eldrazi are and just how much of a threat they represent.
The art itself is also gorgeous though, amazing use of perspective, coloring and composition.
>>47765050
Awesome art, wish the framing was done better though.
>>47764707
Can't believe nobody has posted Guay yet. Easily my favourite magic artist
>>47760191
The only time I would use that would be to kill off a Hydra I own, which I would also need a Quicken to cast, which all becomes null and void if I just own a Hooded Hydra in the first place.
I like jason chan
Harold McNeill, the one and only.
>>47753571
did he get his arm signed?
kek
>>47768501
With living in Florida seeing the blue eldrazi scared the shit out of me.
>>47768501
I feel like the good artwork of BFZ was a bit wasted on so many mediocre cards. I didn't like the transparent rules box and frame either because you can barely see the art underneath it. Even more transparency would've been cool.
This in foil looks amazing.
No contest
>>47764725
>Just got two of these in the mail today
>only need one more to finnish my playset
God damn I love that card
The best depiction of an Eldrazi in the whole of MTG. And the card has great flavor text as well to boot.

>>47743284
Honest to god, I absolutely fucking hate this art. The point is that Thalia's face takes up a tremendous portion of the frame, but it's done so poorly, and when put onto a card looks so unappealing, that I can't help but feel the foreground tower that is her sword, and the reflection of Avacyn in her eyes is the only reason Wizards even bothered to use this piece.
HOLY SHIT
I hate this art so much, on a card I love so much.
