Okay /tg/, in all manner of settings you've encountered and know what are the fantasy races YOU, YOU as a person most identify with.
You look at them and think "Hey, if I were there, I'd probably be one of those too, i'm all about THAT."

Maybe it's culture, maybe it's appearance, or just general comfort.

What fantasy race would YOU be?
Funmodo: What ones would you try and affiliate yourself with the least, and which would you not be, but happily be allied with.
RACISM WELCOME.

Humans.

No, really. I never, ever find any appeal in other races. They are usually Humans+, where the plus stands for some tertiary difference in body shape and their entire culture is some stereotyped version of existing culture. Nothing of interests.

I DO dig dryads, the more inhuman they are, the better, but that still doesn't mean I identify with them. They are simply one of few interesting things that ever happend in tabletop RPG.

And back to the humans. It's not just "humans in general". That's bullshit on the same levels as other races. I mean humans representing some culture on a local scale. There is nothing more irritating than entire fucking race or species having the same, uniform culture between themselves.

I like the concept of putting character from group X in culture Y, so they grow up in society, culture and climate completely alien to their "normal" one. And by growing up, I mean being culturally a full member of culture Y, with zero ties to their basic one. Creates a lot of interesting interactions and role-playing situations

Can be pulled with pretty much any race, so I'm not picky

I've sometimes though about it, partly because I know two girls who are pretty much like and elf and a dwarf without the ears/beard, both appearance- and personality-vise, so I've wondered what fantasy race I'd resemble. But I've got nothing.
I sometimes joke that I'm a vampire since I'm naturally pale and have very pointy canines, but if anything I'd probably be closer to a tiefling or something.

This so much. To me, this is nothing but the author being too lazy to think outside the box or be creative. There's thousands of different cultures on our planet alone, but it's always:

"Oh, here's a sapient space-faring species tens of billions strong, and their whole culture revolves around war. No doctors, artists, firemen, nothing except soldiers. And their leaders are chosen by how many people they've killed XDDD!

Fuck off with all that noise

This. This is why while I'm making my own homebrew setting each race, humans inculded, are going to have 2-4 different major cultures and subspecies denominations, and also sub cultures within those cultures

>Wants to get diversity
>That means 4 options instead 1
Anon. don't want this to sound rude (seriously, I don't), but unless you literally spent your life on ripping entire fucking world, the real one, from specific time period, you will NEVER reach true diversity of your setting

Well, unless doing the following:
The setting is just a small-scale part of the world. Everything happens there, so you don't have this entire planet painted with few continent-spanning empires to fill the map, but instead entire game takes place in something of size of modern Belgium.
So having just a bunch of options still makes it extremely diverse given the size, but without spending years on expanding the setting to actually give options, subspecies and suboptions.

Wasn't there a German RPG where entire action happens in late medieval Germany, with differences between regions, kingdoms, baronies and free cities replacing the standard planet with empires over it? So the game was in theory about single group of people in single country (well, proto-country), but still had a massive difference between all the groups involved.
It simply kept things small instead of going for entire globe.

Also, games that have strict splats for races/species are mostly responsible for this bullshit, because everything is streamlined to fit into the splat.

>from specific time period,
Yup, its based off of Antiquity.

>The setting is just a small-scale part of the world.
Not exactly, but I'm taking a piecemeal approach. due to the world being so young and most people having not traveled around much, the most any one game will have is usually 1 macro race, maybe two if your on a border.

For example, say your playing your game in the Iskanthri Imperium (notMacedonia). Within the Iskanthri you'll meet people of varrying culture within the different fiefs within the Iskanthri, as well as their interactions with the different Fae Courts, and if you're on the Northwest border you might encounter different tribes of the disparate Shayeshel (Notpre-Qin Dynasty Mountain Tribes with a bit of Scythian mixed in) and their various intertribal wars and conflicting traditions.

And aside from this Fae, this is all just humans. I haven't even mentioned the other races on the other far-off parts of the continent, or on the other continents. Plus your average Joe the Farmer human will probably have never even heard of the other races, as not even most scholars know much of them save for the scattered expedition notes from travelers that are viewed incredible skeptically.

I want each race to have a specific geographic range that allows for each nation in the setting to feel like its own organic universe, while also allowing for potential for cultural exchange and interaction at realistic borders.

Granted, this whole homebrew project will most likely take me several years to finish, but I don't mind. I'm in no rush.
>>
>>47738896
Okay, so I really, really love Beastmen/Beastfolk. Fuck, I love Khajiits despite more or less feeling very bored by the Elder Scrolls setting. I love Beastmen of Chaos and the only thing that irks me is that they're this evil mook-race despite having the potential to be badass woodland marauders who love to kick everyone's arse but aren't above allying with local groups to make survival innadeepwoods easier and kick some common threat's arse.

Mankind has imagined the possibilities of human/animal hybrid creatures in its mythology since the fucking stoneage. Before we worshipped human gods, we worshipped animalspirits (and fat asses).

So I associate with Beastfolk, primarily the canine or felinoid types, and I am always immediately hooked when I see an actually creative blend of both human and animal features.

Whenever Beastmen aren't available, I go for the secondbest race that involves some sort of feral, bestial aspects, so I usually end up with trolls or orcs.

I want to be one of those gnarly-voiced Orc minions who show up in service to the Dark Lord du jour. Forget the threatened nobility of Men, or the fallen grace of Elves; I want to be an evil motherfucker, working for an even more evil motherfucker.

Give me some slaves to bark orders at and whip into line, and I'll be happy. Or make me the snivelling lapdog who answers to the Dark Lord directly. Sure, he'll eventually kill me in a fit of rage, but he'll regret it later when he realises how hard it is to find good lickspittles.

I want to be the guy cranking the levers on the torture rack, who clearly enjoys his job way too much. I want to be the guy who announces to the Dark Lord that his new, monstrous super-soldiers are ready, after they just woke up and ate all my underlings.

I want to be an Evil middle-manager.

You're kind of missing the narrative point of multiple races.
>>
>>47738896
I ran a game of 5E set in a Pirates of the Caribbean setting using history as my basis. The races were stereotyped but mixed.

I made it to where the Dragonborn were a race only found in the Caribbean Isles and South America. I connected with that race as a whole because each Dragonborn tribe of which there were hundreds identified itself by the color of their scales and their latent abilities. For some god awful reason, I became really attached to this one tribe, the Lakos. They were a blue scaled Dragonborn tribe that favored aquatic combat and were almost like merfolk. I gave them Jamaican accents and everything, and had so much fun developing their culture and way of life that I even asked my players if, when prompted to go enslave some Dragonborn tribes by a slave trader, they wouldn't mind NOT enslaving the Lakos specifically because I as the DM was having so much fun developing their culture. The players were really nice about it and agreed, saying they could tell I had a lot of fun with those guys. That game ended eventually but we still talk about the Lakos.

There is absolutely nothing more annoying in the entire hobby than people who know nothing about given subject, but still try to figure things out by their own wits, usually coming out to retarded conclusions. Just to list few such brilliant ideas:
- plate armour being heavy and constricting

- shield being generally useless
- dual wielding weapons being effective
- bows being useful for anything else than volley shooting
- crossbows taking ages to reload
And so on and forth. Fucking educate yourself, instead of sprouting bullshit you have no idea about.

Just go by the general perception of people based on commonly applied characteristics of races in modern fantasy.

Forgotten Realms does have AD&D-edition lore by... Greenwood, I think? That says elves and dwarves can interbreed, though it's incredibly rare. >>
>>47743269
True! It doesn't change the fact that, for about every race there is, there is a general character associated with that race.

Tiefling. I like their aestetic, and I think there are indeed some demons inside of me to fight (sloth, sshort temper, dimwittery, social "idontgiveafuckery", etc)

I guess we share two things in common - dislike toward Hunans+ and likeness for Gaians

Thus pleased me because I always want to be the dark lord. Being Sauron is my fetish.

Forgotten Realms setting.

I'd be a Tiefling, though I'd rather be an elf.

I'd probably avoid dragonborn, because they're fucking weird and hard to read.

I'd likely get along well with halfings. Being a guard for a halfling shire sounds like good work. I'd want a tiefling, elf, or human to wife though.
>>
Human: I'm about as vanilla as you get. I could probably be argued as cosmopolitan, too, and while that isn't universally a human trait in fantasy it's almost never a racial trait of non-human ones.

As for affiliation… races vary so much by setting it's hard to say. For example in WHFB I'd likely find Humans and Dwarves the easiest to get along with. Contrastingly, in Tolkien's works practically every non-corrupt race by 3E seems agreeable in spots.

Some guys from /fit/ compared Portuguese people with hobbits and I really gotta agree; I'm just like them. I'm short, hairy, baby faced, I eat a lot, I'm laid back and really friendly and most people don't care about me, plus I have good family values and just want a happy, quiet life with the odd adventure here and there [/spoiler

I don't really have any sort of hatred for any races besides morally questionable trouble makers. I'd like to be friends with other chill dudes with interesting cultures and stories to discuss.
>>
>>47738896
I identify most as Human. I'd like to be more like a Dwarf, but realistically, I'm a loyal human, adaptable, and always aiming to overcome.

ps, not a furry but i totally get feeling different and wanting to be anyone but myself.

This hobby is just Autists v. Borderlines isn't it?
>>
>>47748456
Not always. Sometimes you'll see two autists against each other.
>>
>>47748456
The autists tend to die off around 20 something when they no longer have social interaction handed to them on a silver platter from school.

But holy shit, hit post was incredibly autistic anon, I almost vomited.
>>
>>47741715
But anon, that's all just common sense
>>
>>47741715
Bows can be plenty decent for defending walls and from behind a shield wall anon. They aren't inaccurate in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. I do agree that the "running around firing at things from 20 feet away once every 5 seconds" thing is a bit silly though.

Vampires.
I live in seclusion and my interactions with people are predatory, other than shitposting here I literally don't spend a second in someone I can't get something from. But I'm relatively hansome and well spoken so people refuse to believe I'm an abusive leech.
>>
>>47738896
I like kobolds and gnomes/halflings, but I'm not sure if I'd want to be one. I'd probably be a boring old human, or possibly a cliche wood elf. I like me some forests.

I fucking love
Writing a novel about them and I've developed the shit out of their culture and beliefs.
My players always anticipate Gnolls so I don't actually use them that much, except as background creatures.
>>
I'd probably be an overly grumpy halfling. I think most would really. Just seeking a quiet life of simple pleasures makes them very relatable.

What I would want to be is some variety of woodland elf or anything immortal and/or loosely shackled by civilization.

I'd steer clear of gnolls, gobs, orcs and anything likely to loot me/put me in a cookpot, though I would admire the more savage races from afar, like some bitter racist with a secret ebony fetish

hairy, strong, thick, broad shoulders, barrel chestef 260 lbs 6' tall, around 20% bf.
my profession is a craftsman/welder/fabricator/HE operator.
my passion is art (sculpture) with a focus on craftsmanship and aesthetics rather than fartsy lazy modern and abstract shit.

I'm mostly stoic sometimes very dark in my humor, I like to drink (I think 10 pints is my Ko limit) and I love a good time. ok with people coming off as the chilled out friend that doesn't talk much.

I'm a tall dwarf.

I also want to say that there is nothing more annoying in the hobby than people having fits about the realism or lack thereof of in a game wich is not meant as a simulation of real life.
games need mechanics. deal with it

also I just want to stay away from anything playing a paladin because every fucking guy That's ever played a paladin in my group is a damn zealous inquisitor that can't let the plot advance untill he fights the thief or rogues of the party as well as the street bums and anybody that tickles his fancy as he goes around detecting evil for no good reason.
