Does anyone know where I can read a decently translated version of Dungeon Meshi? The only version of it I can find on the internet has all the characters talking like they just had a stroke. It seems like a really cool manga, so I would hate to ruin it by reading a bad translation.

Sadly the scanlation scene is plagued by horrible translations, and what makes it worse is a culture where scanlation groups don't want to tread on one another's toes. So, unlike in anime fansubs, if one group is actively working on something then the other groups usually leave it alone.

When looking for manga translations there are really only four options. The site of whatever group is translating it, batoto (you need to make an account, but it's free to do so), Kissmanga, and Dynasty Scans (which is basically yuri only).
Personally I prefer batoto, but all of these are good options depending on the series.

That's a cockatrice. The mythical basilisk was a snake that didn't really look particularly unusual, but was super poisonous.
The two creatures were somewhat related, and often confused for each other. One was supposed to be born from an egg laid by a rooster, incubated by a toad, while another is born from an egg laid by a toad, incubated by a rooster.

Not really. A lot of people mistake the cockatrice with a basilisk because they both have that gaze ability, it's supposed to look more like a serpent than a chicken.
