It is 153 years since the Battle of Brandy Station, the largest predominantly cavalry engagement of the American Civil War, as well as the largest ever to take place on American soil. It was fought around Brandy Station, Virginia, at the beginning of the Gettysburg Campaign by the Union cavalry under Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton against Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate cavalry.

The victorious Confederate Army of Northern Virginia had streamed into Culpeper County after its victory at Fredericksburg. Under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee, the troops seemed invincible and massed around Culpeper preparing to carry the war north into Pennsylvania. These half-starved men had defeated armies twice their size, but the constant enemies of hunger and poor equipment were showing their effects. Lee was determined to strike north to capture horses, equipment, and food for his men.

By June 5, two infantry corps under CSA Generals Longstreet and Ewell were camped in and around Culpeper. Six miles north of town, holding the line of the Rappahannock River, General J.E.B. Stuart bivouacked his cavalry troopers, screening the Confederate Army against surprise by the enemy.

Most of the Southern cavalry was camped near Brandy Station. Stuart, the "dashing cavalier", requested a full field review of his troops by General Lee. His request granted, on June 8 nearly 9,000 mounted troopers passed Lee's reviewing stand, first at a walk, then in full gallop as sabers glistened in the sun and 22 batteries of horse artillery roared in simulated battle.

A dense fog hung over the Rappahannock that morning. Unknown to the Confederates, 10,000 Union horsemen had massed their forces on the other side. Misinterpreting the screening action of Stuart's cavalry, Union General Pleasanton thought he was attacking a rebel raiding party of unknown strength.
>>

Pleasanton's attack plan called for a two-prong thrust at the enemy. One half of his men would cross the river at Beverly's Ford, two miles below Brandy Station, and the other half would cross at Kelly's Ford, four miles downstream. Caught in these pincers, the Southern cavalry would be surprised, outnumbered, and beaten.

Early in the morning, Stuart heard ragged gunfire from the river. Soon his troopers reached his Fleetwood Heights headquarters with the news that Union cavalrymen had forced a crossing at Beverly's Ford and charged up the narrow road toward St. James Church and Gee House Hill. The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry unsuccessfully charged the guns at St. James, suffering the greatest casualties of any regiment in the battle. Several Confederates later described the 6th's charge as the most "brilliant and glorious" cavalry charge of the war. (In many Civil War battles, cavalrymen typically dismounted once they reached an engagement and fought essentially as infantry. But in this battle, the surprise and chaos led to a mostly mounted fight.)

Just as Stuart heard that the enemy had been checked at St. James, he received the startling news that Union troops were riding in on his rear. The vanguard, then visible, was approaching Fleetwood from the Stevensburg Road, having crossed at Kelly's Ford and reached Stevensburg via La Grange. One lone artillery piece was left atop Fleetwood Hill, and only a token force to guard Stuart's headquarters. As this single gun fired the few shells available, the Union horsemen halted their advance. Racing against time, Confederate cavalry rushed back from the St. James battle line to meet this new threat.

Stuart's headquarters was overrun, and the rear lines at St. James were threatened. Help arrived as cavalry rode in from Little Fork Church and saved the day for Stuart. After 12 hours of battle, Union troops retreated to the north side of the river.

Union casualties were 907; Confederate losses 523. Some 20,500 men were engaged in this, the largest predominantly cavalry battle to take place during the war. Among the casualties was Robert E. Lee's son, Rooney, who was seriously wounded in the thigh. He was sent to a nearby estate, where he was captured on June 26.

Stuart argued that the battle was a Confederate victory since he held the field at the end of the day and had repelled Pleasonton's attack. The Southern press was generally negative about the outcome. The Richmond Enquirer wrote that "Gen. Stuart has suffered no little in public estimation by the late enterprises of the enemy." It described Stuart's command as "puffed up cavalry," that suffered the "consequences of negligence and bad management."

Subordinate officers criticized Pleasonton for not aggressively defeating Stuart at Brandy Station. Maj. Gen. Hooker had ordered Pleasonton to "disperse and destroy" the Confederate cavalry near Culpeper, but Pleasonton claimed that he had only been ordered to make a "reconnaissance in force toward Culpeper," thus rationalizing his actions.

For the first time in the Civil War, Union cavalry matched the Confederate horsemen in skill and determination. Stuart's humiliation as the victim of two surprise attacks foreshadowed other embarrassments ahead for him in the Gettysburg campaign.

The ACW makes for great wargaming, and its biggest cavalry battle gives gamers the chance to try something special. It's a fairly even fight, and being entirely on horseback makes it pretty unique.

I've noticed he's often blamed for the defeat at Gettysburg because he was off riding about and not actually supporting Lee, and these days he's probably more famous for that, than for his more successful actions. To quote his Wiki article:

>Arguably Stuart's most famous campaign, Gettysburg, was marred when he was surprised by a Union cavalry attack at the Battle of Brandy Station and by his separation from Lee's army for an extended period, leaving Lee unaware of Union troop movements and contributing to the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg. Stuart received significant criticism from the Southern press as well as the postbellum proponents of the Lost Cause movement, but historians have failed to agree on whether Stuart's exploit was entirely the fault of his judgment or simply a result of bad luck and Lee's less-than-explicit orders.

The fact he was KIA the following year denied him the chance to defend himself from those criticisms in future years. On the other hand he got a tank named after him, which puts him in pretty illustrious company.

What's your favorite one of Hobart's Funnies, /hwg/?
I have a soft spot for the Crab, but the AVRE and that giant spigot mortar just push my buttons.
It was the Funnies that "broke" Squad Leader in the end. When they created the original game they were going to include the Crab, but in a playtest someone tried to use it against infantry and they just couldn't work out how to properly simulate that, so they didn't include them in the finished game. However with the second expansion, Crescendo of Doom, simplicity had gone out the window and they added all the British armour including the various Funnies, and now players could merrily assault infantry with flail tanks - although by this point the game had become an unwieldy mess. But hey, who doesn't want to unleash a Crocodile on some unfortunates, or drop that 40lb spigot bomb on a bunker!

"a kind of jolly landscape in green against a pink sunset sky"
"a bold pattern of brown, broken by broad black lines. "
afterwards, it was noted that
"the highly coloured camouflage painting was abandoned, and all tanks were henceforth of a neutral brown colour and provided with camouflage nets. "

Overall both that and the WWII series are great series of games. The Strategic level of fleet moving and searching for each other is fantastic. however the game slips a little bit at the tactical level. there is some gamey abuse that can happen if you really know what you are doing-slower ships being able to escape from faster ones is one example....

Interesting. I'm usually more interested in the sort of God's eye perspective in an empire building game, rather than a simulation of a single war, but I'm very interested in the period. Pike and Shot has been one of my favorite recent games.

The problem with representing the logistical side of the conflict is that if its at all realistic, you'd have to recruit your armies for each campaign, and over half of them would die of disease while you march around denying advances.

Ahhh, that's unfortunate that the tactical situation isn't perfect, though I suppose no game truly can be perfect.
I know Plan Gold and a bunch of the other books feature scenario books that they say describe a lot of the history and background behind each of the scenarios present, can you attest to how in-detail it goes? While I'm sure they feature a lot of historical information in their more traditional WWI/WWII games I'm curious as to how much detail they put into fleshing out the alternate historical scenarios and detailing them to the player.

They do a pretty good job of it, using the actual battle plans that the military had at the time for the different Plans. The amount of 'historical' detail in fleshing out the hypothetical scenario can vary from book to book. Some of them are pretty good, others seem to be lacking a bit.

still they are pretty fun reads regardless if you are into hypothetical or not.

Hey guys, I have a wargaming question for you:

How many rank and file wargames tend to focus on an element as a whole versus the individual models in them? Like, "big block versus big block with little blocks in them"

To compare two fantasy wargames (sorry, it's all I really know, and I imagine most of you know em too) WHFB tracks each model in a unit, and you have to count possible attacks and wounds each unit can put out based on the models within it, and as you take damage your combat ability drops down due to having fewer models, and you purchase each model individually.

Then in Kings of War you track the entire thing as a single element, not worrying about individual models and deaths - eventually the unit takes enough to damage it declare it out of action, and it's dead. There's no actual loss of combat ability until it's dead (or it possibly 'wavers', rendering it more or less useless for a turn). Here, you purchase a unit in a few different pre-set 'sizes' (troop, regiment, horde...) which determine its offensive (number of attacks) and defensive (how much damage it can take until destroyed) ability.

I'm wondering how common each one is in battles of the size these games have. Obviously man-sized and whatnot will be more likely to track each person, but...larger-scale rank and rifle?
>>
>>47713504
Mostly it's unit based when warfare was more about formations. But there are some differences and variations - like in Rank&File you buy your unit as bases, each base has 4 "wounds", if they gather enough damage, you remove the base. So...basically it's like WHFB but with bigger base sizes. On the other hand, systems like Lasalle has a similar method where a unit gathers "wounds", and their morale generally degrades.

And of course there's Warhammer Historical which is really like WHFB for obvious reasons. Historical wargames tend to be in the middle I'd say - bigger bases, less bases per unit, but it's still base-based (what a stupid phrase). But still, I consider most of these as unit-based systems.
>>
>>47703227

Some early tanks had them as it was thought that they aided steering. In practice it was found that steering by tracks alone was effective enough, and so the traiking wheels weren't fitted to later models.
>>
>>47713504
It depends.
To constrain myself just to Napoleonics/Horse and Musket rules, which I'm familiar with, it's largely based upon the scale of the game.

At full army scale (Blucher, Grande Armee, V&B) 1 base will likely constitute an entire unit and will be removed all at once, typically their combat ability will diminish as the unit takes more damage, rather than a full attacks until the unit is destroyed.

in the "part of an army" level (Lasalle, Black Powder, Age of Eagles) you usually have multiple men on a single base, multiple of which will make up each unit. Sometimes bases will be lost as the unit takes casualties, sometimes the unit will keep all bases until enough "disruptions" (or other effect dependent on game) have been taken.

In the smaller scale "Skirmish" games (Muskets and Tomahawks, Sharpe Practice.) figures are generally removed on a 1 to 1 basis

Stuart was an excellent cavalry commander for the majority of his Civil War career.
Basically, so far as I understand, his exploits around Gettysburg are his only big screw up in a career of excellent service.

Of course, his one fuck up might have caused a major Confederate loss, so...life sucks.

>Do they mix well at all?

Pic related, L-R: Foundry(?), Wargames Factory, Victrix, Warlord/Immortal

They wouldn't really rank up well in the same unit, but I've seen several armies which use both victrix and warlord in their own units

I personally find the Warlord/Immortals to be much better sculpted, Victrix's hoplites were their earliest sets and IMO not great-looking, also Victrix hoplites come with 8 heads per sprue for 8 bodies, so no extra heads for variation.

Warlord/Immortal comes with I think 4 helmets on the main sprue (Corinthian/Illyrian helmets, each of which can have separate crests attached, suitable for Peloponnesian war or earlier) and also a different command/accessory sprue for each set (Spartan, Classical, Ancient) with another 8 or so heads/crests.

I bought the spartan set because I mistakenly thought that the classical and ancient ones were the same, due to the fact that Warlord's website doesn't sell the Classical sprue separately, or show pictures of the sprue, but it turns out that:

- Spartans come with generic heads on main sprue+command sprues with 8 Spartan heads with long hair, beards, and shaved mustaches (evidently the stereotypical spartan look) wearing Pilos helmet variants
- Ancient comes with generic+command sprues with a couple of more old-fashioned helmets, and a wider variety of crests for the generic heads (since Corinthian/Illyrian are already "older" helmets that aren't really appropriate after the 5th century or so) as well as a musician

cont.

- Classical set has command sprue with helmets that are more appropriate for Xenophon to Alexander the Great eras, Phrygian, Boeotian, Pilos (without spartan hairstyle), iirc a few Thracian-ish helmets, as well as some "bald" heads that can have helmets or Petasos hats stuck on them (oddly, the spartan set comes with the spare Petasos/Boeotian helmets, but no bald heads to put them on).

Each set also comes a set of 40 or so decals (not as nice as the LBMS on this guy's >>47708062 but adequate and free) whereas I don't think the Victrix ones come with decals. You also get 40 in the Spartan or Classical sets and 42 in the Ancient set, I think Victrix is 36.

I'm not an anti-Victrix shill, I actually intend to buy large swathes of their Carthaginians, Macedonians, Romans, and even their Peltast set, I just think their Hoplites are rather subpar. I would buy them heavily marked down, or if I was making an all-Hoplite force and got sick of painting the Warlord/Immortal ones. You can also find the latter for $25 at several retailers, so there's that

Pic related are some of mine, I have about 20/40 done since I got them at Christmas

Also this, although I think they're better sculpted, they're definitely harder to paint due to being so small, so that's something to consider as well. >First historical game was probably one we invented, an ancients game with cavalry, trebuchets, infantry, etc. Based on Age of Empires 2.
My first historical game was a homemade Napoleonics ruleset devised by me and my friend. Horribly imbalanced, and involving literally fistfulls of dice and calculations whenever literally anything happened because we thought we were so smart for knowing soooo much about history that every modifier we could think of had to be included.

It was completely trash, but we had fun.
>>
>>47720366
fuck yes, napoleonics was some of the first serious rulesets I wrote, around 2008. Got the "research a period and write a ruleset then playtest the shit out of it" bug. Over the years I weaned myself of 40k, then off WHFB (which was gloriously tactical for a few years there... ) to the point where now I exclusively play historical rulesets I've written. Me and my buddy used to get together once a week, and roll a dice as to which game to play, of the best 4 or 5 games I had made over the years. Good times.

I've posted many of my rulesets here.... I think I was about 22 in 2008, so sliiiightly more mature and able to do a bit of research into what the units were actually like. My early napoleonic rulesets were still pretty rubbish, although my Ancients ruleset from about the same time is passable.

Ikonki is my most recent one, for Russo-Japanese land wars, I did a playtest post by post around new years here on /hwg/.

Most of my work recently is on Ostfront, our WW2 system which is getting on 5 years old. Getting things ship shape for version 17. Coming along nicely with some photos and even full map campaign rules and example turns.

Other complete games I've written include: Thirty Years War, NZwars, Dogfight!, Banzaii! (WW2 skirmish / rules lite RPG), T-90 (modern combat with Helis, TOWs, tanks etc).
Also the emu war 3 page rules, Crawler Siege (if anyone remembers that from /tg/ of olde), and a few others I've probably forgotten.

I was heavily influenced by don Featherstone's wargame books back in the day, helping me aim for simple but effective rules, rather than too much complexity.

Operation Totalize 1944: The Allied Drive South from Caen (Osprey Campaign 294)

In Operation Totalize, Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds' II Canadian Corps launched an attack from its positions along the Bourguébus Ridge south of Caen, striking south-southeast astride the main Caen-Falaise road toward the high ground that dominated the town of Falaise and the key west-east lateral road that ran through this town. Using sophisticated operational art the initial break-in achieved rapid success; indeed, more tactical success than any previous Allied break-in attack in Normandy. However, despite this rapid initial success, Totalize did not subsequently secure a decisive operational-level victory. Indeed, Simonds' forces subsequently struggled swiftly to complete the second break-in battle, and to transit into rapid exploitation operations. Had Simond's force been successful the German army may not have been able to extract themselves from the Falaise pocket and would have been surrounded and defeated - possibly bringing about the early end of the war in Europe.

While it's obviously not /hwg/ I thought I'd mention this seeing as I've just added it to the folders. It was written by the creator of Songs of Blades and Heroes and will definitely have some appeal here I'm sure.

Of Gods and Mortals - Mythological Wargame Rules (Osprey Wargames 5)

Two armies prepare for war. Thor, surrounded by crackling lightning, leads the assault of a horde of Viking berserkers. Preparing to receive this charge stands a wall of grim-faced, determined Spartan hoplites, commanded by Ares himself… Of Gods and Mortals is a skirmish wargame that gives players the opportunity to command the greatest heroes, warriors and monsters of legend - and the gods and goddesses that ruled over them. Whether you want to lead the forces of Greek, Egyptian, Celtic or Norse mythology to battle, or build your own pantheon, Of Gods and Mortals presents everything you need. Each player takes control of a god, a handful of legendary characters and a number of mortal troops, forming a warband that must work in harmony to succeed. Although the gods are incredibly powerful, they are only as strong as the faith of the mortals who follow them - if their worshippers are cut down, gods become weaker, and if a deity is vanquished in combat, its followers may flee the field of battle. Success lies in employing a strategy that uses all your troops, from the mightiest to the most humble, as effectively as possible.

First tabletop game: Gorkamorka in 97

I've been a history nerd and war film fan all my life but only took the plunge into historical miniatures last year when Age of Shitmar happened

The fact that there are so many quality plastic kits nowadays helped too, as did recognizing former GW types (Perry bros, Jervis Johnson, Rick Priestley etc.) who had jumped ship before me

Anyone ever buy anything from http://paperterrain.mybisi.com/?

I want to have my own terrain for a variety of games (SAGA C&C, TANKS, Black Ops, and a few others) and their stuff looks pretty good.

Ideally I'm thinking about picking up some card buildings and some game mats, probably from deepcut or similar, since ideally I want the terrain to be easy to transport.

Also I just don't have the time or inclination to build and paint my own stuff, it's time consuming enough getting my minis done.

As it happens the Parachute Regiment was never a part of the BAOR (except for a brief period immediately after WW2). 5 Airborne Brigade was to be used as a theatre reserve, deployed from the UK to wherever they would be needed in Europe. I think with a few exceptions for specialized units, their platoon composition would be the same as infantry, so you could just go with that. But anyway have a read through this link, it might be helpful.

Well for normandy buildings, as can be seen in the great image >>47737823 most buildings will be a mix of timber (especially in more rural areas, not so much that image) and local stones (a lot of flint and such, a lot of granite in regions directly surrounding the Normandy beachheads) and of course bricks.

I had a cool Avalon Hill hex game when I was a kid. Basically inherited it; got it from my grand parents and it belonged to one of my uncles. Unfortunately my mom threw it out at some point. Even though she hordes every other shitty board game no one will ever play again.

Get google earth and turn on the Panoramio photo layer and/or use google street view.

Modern buildings are more homogenous, especially in urban areas, but if you stick to more rural areas, you should get at least somewhat of an idea of what things looked like 70+ years ago.

Found some WWII Germans minis for infantry, what's a great place to get tanks from? Scale is 1/48th
>>
>>47743749
What minis do you use?

For 1/48 there is Tamiya which has a huge selection of german tanks and vehicles and Italeri which has a few trucks and a Puma armored car. (The Tamiya 1/48 Puma is actually the reboxed Italeri kit)

If you dont care to much about the scale you can also use 1/56 tanks from rubicon, warlord or any other wargaming company with ww2 tanks in their product line.
