This is a Scourge I worked on this afternoon. I've never done wings before but I think they turned out pretty good. Still need to base it obviously but I had fun with the model. One thing I struggled with was the hair. I was trying to go for an aqua-marine/emerald color, a very bright greeny blue but I just couldn't get it to work.

>I was trying to go for an aqua-marine/emerald color, a very bright greeny blue but I just couldn't get it to work.

Hmmm... I just picked up a bottle of Citadel's Drakenhof Nightshade. I wonder how that would look washed over a bright greenish-blue. What approach did you take?
>>
>>47636796
I based in Temple Guard Blue, then washed it with a watered down Waywatcher Green glaze. Then I dry-brushed it with Niblet Green and Skink Blue before finally washing it lightly again with a dark blue.

Honestly I was just throwing everything I could think of at it. It came out alright but it's not the color depth I was hoping for.

I've pretty much accepted that the model is going to turn out ugly as shit. Can't really hide massive flaws on the model. Maybe pp will send me out a replacement model.

I'll just work on my vanguard instead.

Hey WIP, I recently picked up a Maw-Krusha (pic related) and I'm unsure what to do with the base. It's got a lot of room so I could do something neat, but I don't know if I want to start a new "Orc only" army or include him in my Spider tribal Goblins army.
The spider tribe I wanted to look like it's in a swamp, which I'm not sure would look as good with the Maw-crusha which looks like it belongs on a wrecked battlefield or up in the snowy mountains.
I'm not sure, help/ideas plox?

reposting because it was near ded thread.

i swapped the legs from model a to model b for 2 models and swapped right leg a with right leg b for 2 more.

2 have normal legs. most have at least 1 ironguts arm and most arms had to at least be re positioned with a blob of grey stuff in the sockets.

the runners arm was cut up and changed so much to get that pose i had to sculpt half the arm, hoping it will look decent when primed.

Cloaks are Caledor Sky, then a coat of Teclis Blue watered down to nothing along the folds and upper surfaces where light would hit, then Teclis Blue in thin lines around the hems and such.
Armor is Runelord Brass painted right over the black undercoat, Leadbelcher on the edges to give it some shine, then dabbled or streaked with N(vowels) Oxide, that worn brass technical paint. I focus on rivets and joints in the armor where it'd be harder to polish.
Metallic parts are just Leadbelcher and then Nuln oil, the wooden guns are Rhinox Hide and then drybrushed in the direction of the wood grain with Gorthor Brown. Lenses are Waagh! Flesh and then Moot Green, all lenses, glassware, and screens get a layer of Ardcoat to shine them up.

Still not sure on the basing, thinking forested or woodland to keep the color scheme in the cool colors spectrum, I've only used red and yellow in stuff like the wiring to underline the details.

I haven't built or painted miniatures in about six or seven years now, kind of feeling as I go along, what works and what doesn't. There's a GW guy (I think his name is Duncan) who does painting tutorials, I've watched most of them, learned other lessons the hard way.

Ok so I've just tried doing a wash and it really doesn't look right. Am I doing something wrong here? Yes I'm a complete newfag. Should I not be using black? Is the wash too thick?
>>
>>47641460
I think the issue with washing him is that your green is pretty thick, and has some kind of weird texture to it. It almost looks like super fine flock or texture paint. The wash is hanging in the texture.

Though to answer your initial question, I think you're supposed to wash and then highlight over the washes, that'll make the edges of the plates and such stand out more.
>>
>>47641505
>>47641460
The weird texture looks like he's either primed too thick or from too far away(bits of it drying mid air and then sticking to the model to produce a weird texture)

The tiny dots of white showing through all over him also hint to that.
>>
>>47641505
Yeah, I think i sprayed the undercoat on way too thick, hence the odd texture. There's just one layer of watered green on it, so I think it has to be the undercoat. Was pretty difficult to tell when it was covered with the white due to the colour of the resin itself, I wound up overcompensating trying to get it in all the recesses. Might use black for the next model (Vyper). I'm going Iyanden, does yellow/blue work well on a black undercoat?

Think I might just forgoe washing these models and just highlight them instead. Glad I didn't start with the Exarch. Thanks for the backfeed dudebro.
>>
>>47641584
Yeah, primed too thick. I sprayed from about 30cm away, a la the instructions. Was that too far? The thick texture made it really fucking hard to paint, just sucked up all the liquid, I probably used about twice as much green as I would have needed. Any tips/videos on undercoating in general?

Not sure if I should add a blood effect to his scythe... I think the blood would distract from the rust or possible be kind of confusing to look at.
>>
>>47641460

Use a green wash instead. If you use a black wash you need to go back over with your original green on the raised armor plates, and leave the black wash in the cracks.

Also all washes look dirty and weird like that, unless you gloss varnish before washing, or use an oil wash/pin wash which also requires varnishing.
>>
>>47641890
Ahh, coolio. Thanks man, will try out a darker green.
>>
>>47641861

What's the most creative objective marker you've seen? I've been thinking of making some Imperial Guard related ones, like a flag, a bleeding out commissar, commander half crushed by a wrecked chimera.
>>
>>47642271
Played a 3-way game recently where we used a Vortex Deathstrike launcher as the objective. 500 pts each, squads respawn when they are wiped, if you control the objective until your next shooting phase you give one of the other players a marker, representing a missile strike. 2 strikes removes a player. Was pretty fun, but dragged on a bit. Eventually the Eldar dude won because fucking ghostaxe Wraithblades with a warlock are ridiculous.

>>
>>47642813
Maybe try something like this for highlighting on the edges. Or just add white to your previous greens till you get the color you want.
>>
How do you learn to identify the consistency and the quantity needed such that the paint doesn't blob up on the figure, but it also still applies to the figure rather than being stuck in the brush

Or did I just buy a really shit brush to save money?
>>
Anyone know how the heck you add the underslung shuriken cannon to the Vyper model? There's literally no place/way for it to fit without cutting bits off the model.
>>
>>47642926
If it blobs up, it's too thick.

If it won't come off the brush, it's also too thick.

If it flows away from the brush all over the place, that's when it's too thin. And you're probably having way too much on the brush.

A bad brush won't affect paint consistency, instead you get a bad tip, and it won't hold as much paint.

The generic Space Marines sheet comes with transfers for half-a-dozen chapters. When I suggested I'd be happy to trade the chapters I didn't need (Ultramarines, Black Templars, Salamanders, etc.) for others' Blood Angels transfers, they just *sent* them to me free of charge.

i know its a deathwatch marine, but his shoulder pad has black with chequers on which is a HH dark angel thing. They changed to Dark Green after the Heresy (except the Deathwing who still wear the black)

doesnt matter though because i think the HH chequered black one he's done looks alot better than the GW version in pic related.

I built a stand today. It was originally going to be for all my paints

It only cost about 4 bucks worth of wood and a 2 dollar pva glue. I just put pieces of 20cm timber 1, 2, 3, 4 high like a pyramid, and spray painted them with black primer. You could even leave them unglued if you want to expand your army.

Over 200. Being colour blind I can't reliably mix paints on the fly as colours across a gradient look too similar. So I tend to work either from the pot or make a series of pots up with known ratios to serve as my gradient all at once and number them so I know what I'm looking at.

Whenever I happen across a Michaels craft store, I go in with a 40% off coupon and buy myself one good brush, whether I need it or not. This builds up after a while.

I *rarely* throw a brush away unless it's absolutely destroyed. Even if they are cheap, shitty, or totally ruined, you can still use them to get paints out of pots, mix paints together, slather PVA glue on terrain, or mop up extra water.

Why don't you want to? There isn't much to painting over than highlighting(if you don't consider specific advanced techniques pbviously). What would you wish to do over than highlighting?
>>
>>47645070
Well if you dont want to start with black and work up from there, one thing you can do is paint a few layers of a very dark grey, then wash it with a black ink/wash to get it super dark (almost black), then highlight it.

I usually basecoat white, so that's how I do my blacks.
>>
>>47645506

I mean, just priming black and then highlighting my black primer seems lazy and cheap

>>47645617
If you really feel the urge to basecoat just prime it grey and then base it black. If you need to wash it base it dark grey like the other anon said. If you just want to suffer you could simply blend or feather it ,so it's not as "lazy"

Wow i did not read that chain correctly and feel retarded.

Painting black can feel cheap and painful, but there are plenty of ways to deliver yourself some justice on the issue.

if your okay with having a NOT hypersaturated black (le gray instead) The new imperial primers have a gray shade that can literally be washed with black and then a minor highlight for a lighter alternative.

Edge highlighting ive seen can be done in a few different colors, and MY favorite happens to be brown. Let me see if i can drag up that WD page on when they covered it, or whatever. It lets you do warm colors, ESPECIALLY beige cloth so much better and it all blends so spectacularly.

Oh man... I'm honestly not sure anymore. I just kept trying different things until it started looking the way I wanted to. If I had to simplify it so some one else could copy it I would say;

pick a sickly shade of green like nurgle green or what ever the equivalent is now.

Ink in Devan mud or equivalent and then ink in Sepia.

Then basically paint the model in the orginal shade of color avoiding the cracks and crevices with a wide birth so the transition from light to dark is visible.

Pick a highlight color which is probably a mixture of your original green a d some other light green. Start picking raised edges or surfaces.

I had models that metal, 2 types of resin, and at least 3 different brand of plastic.

For some reason the was one type of plastic that felt it bonded on a molecular level to the paint as only a dremel with a soft sander could remove the paint.

So different paint removers worked better with different materials.

The gemstone paints are quite nice. You can use any color as the "base" for them to get a different effect. I used leadbelcher to darken the gem color and it turned out great. Some guy used evil sunz scarlet and the red one and it made a "gooey-fleshy" look for his Tyranids flesh sacs.

For what you see in >>47648154, I left them in only a minute or two at the most. As you can see, there's a First Edition Rhino in there. I didn't have enough nail polish remover to submerge even one piece of it in its entirety. I dipped my toothbrush in the solvent and scrubbed every piece until the paint bitz came off. Hmm... can't say I've done a lot of searching for Orks. In WHFB, they call them "Orcs", so maybe using the terms "Orks" and "Ork" would get more finely-tuned results. Also, eliminating anything with "WHFB" in the title should help, too. When I tried this:

warhammer (oop,"rouge trader","rogue trader",metal,vintage) ("ork","orks") -epic -whfb

... the "Best Match" results came back with a whole bunch of First Edition Space Orks at the top, and 684 results to scroll through, so maybe that's a good start.

I play TT and I use him as a control master; it has lot's of synergy with some minions (dawn serpent, monks and austringer). Also, Luna make deliver a message almost for free.

He gives you pushs, buffs, a little control activation and versatility. He's good at almost everything.

Whoops. Might have left some BFG metal ships in for...oh, 6 hours.

That explains why the bases turned pink and became malleable like clay.

It's a bit too busy but that might be the flash on the camera. Wings came out great, but I would have made the armor much darker with all the bright stuff you're trying to put in there.

The red and purple also don't work at all. The purple could, but not next to the red. I'd leave the red out and replace it with ivory or a faded grey/blue

7 GODDAMN COATS AND THE UNDERCOAT IS STILL SHOWING REEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'm guessing I should have gone with white primer? Also, how do I stop the brush strokes showing? I watered the paint, used only a little at a time, still got dem lines going on. Sucks being newfag.

Generally, if I'm working in metal, I go all out. Goof Off also eats cyanoacrylate glue, so you don't have to risk damaging precious metal models chipping that shit off, either. This will of course mean sacrificing any plastic arms or backpacks, but I know I have plenty of spares in my bitzboxes.

BFG flight stands, OTOH, might be a little harder for some to come by ... but I also have a bag of those.

I should really get around to building that lightbox.
>>
>>47650066
you better set 5 minutes of your life aside then! /s

Dude, make a base, back, and 3 walls of foam core and curve a piece of bristle board from the front of the bottom to the top of the back and you are done.
Throw parchment paper over your light source to diffuse your lights.
Bob is your uncle.
Sally is your aunt.
>>
>>47650008
Any suggestions to make it the best it can be?
Maybe a translucent top with a light source under it?

I only have post them once!

It's has a mix of gothic horror, cowboys and steampunk. Sounds a little retarded at first, but everything fits together nicely.

And yes, the game uses a poker deck instead of dices. That is what allows the player to have a little control over the chance.

It's a really cool game, try it if you can.

Also I'm working too in these.
>>
>>47650166
That could work, or maybe try your hand at some object source lighting - I've seen people work wonders with the technique, although it's way beyond my skill level.
>>
>>47645070
For my commissar, as I felt the same, I used a very dark gray over a black undercoat and washed with nuln oil
>>
>>47650329

Did you wash into the recesses or slather it all over the place?
>>
>>47650003
Thanks man, I'll try that on the next one (2 more to do). Did you mean wash a yellow base with brown, or mix a yellow and brown together for the base colour?
>>
>>47649871
You're seeing one of the weirdest crews there, it's a nightmare daemon who was overpowered through sheer ignorance of the child, whose dreams are created in reality and even spookier than anything the daemon could create. So this ancient evil is at the will of a kid who calls him "Lord Chompy Bits" and is brought out whenever the child goes to sleep.

The gremlins are hillbilly gretchin with pigs instead of squigs, they're a lot of fun to play. There's also cowboys, navvies, vampire zombies, wizards, China and some steampunk stuff mixed into all. It manages to all fit together though.

Seeing as I was doing black on dark gray, I watered it down and slathered it
>>
>>47649586
There's no trick to those lines, right? It's just get good with paint consistency and get good at manual dexterity?
>>
>>47650315
Source light isn't too terrible, the biggest problem is making everything consistent when you're painting what the light is hitting. The biggest part of the process is just a fuckton of drybrushing and washing the source.
>>
>>47650410
Start with a brown as your undercoat and work up in thin layers of yellow. The "base" yellow paint only takes me like 2 maybe 3 layers
