Its because elves in most setting tend to be spend all their time bitching about shit, expecting special treatment and being insufferably smug with nothing to be smug about.
And this often attracts a certain type of player and so all elf players get tarred with the same brush.

I think it has something to do with creating meta threads about elf memes. It's not as bad as you make sound.
But think about this. Another thread died for this. You could have made a constructive thread about elves that makes playing traditional games more enjoyable for everyone, or that gives everyone more insight about this particular fictional race.
