Bunch of orks to kick this thing off, all still very much WIP. Killa kan and the old edition Nob heads i got as a gift from my roommate.
Also my first ever conversion for the Ghazghkull, imo the stock pose for the autocannon arm was boring as fuck so made it point forward.
Will clean up the tubing on the back and add detail + texture. Im very new to mini painting, and these are some of my first minis ever.

Not bad!

A majority of my infantry are done for the guard but a lot my vehicles remain unfinished as I'm awaiting an airbrush. Had trouble summoning the will to paint due to how ugly the plasmas and meltas I have are due to not properly prepping them before priming (had never working with FW before). Sadly I don't have a worthwhile pic to show that I haven't shown before, so here's a bad quality photo of a 4000 point game I played.

The detail is utter shit on it, textures that look good in the box are non existent on the model, the rivets are pretty much blobs. It's a lot worse of a standard than what gw's been putting out recently, I'll post some photos in a minute.

so this is my farseer as of, with terrible white balance for reasons I don't know.

There are some details to do, gems and such, and maybe a final edge highlight on the green. But I'm looking at a couple areas that are just the primer black.

The face is one, and I don't dislike it as black, but should I do something with the black, and if so what?

Newbie here. How would I go about painting pic related, assuming I have all the colours? I'm starting from a black base and I know how to deal with the white underbelly, but I'm unsure about the orange scales on the back. Should I drybrush to hell on the black base until I reach full orange?
I've already tried a few things and everytime I went back to stripping the poor beast.

I would just choose where to change colour, base there with that dark red and then base orange where I want it brighter, you might look into blending, but it looks feasible with just layering

Now for my butcher. Its a small conversion. When the ogres came out there weren't even models for the whole line and the metalcast minis were way to expensive. So a bull had to take up the chopping duties. The apron is greenstuff and young me wasn't smart enough to smooth out the finger prints, so I put blood over it to simulate gore and gitz.

Things I can see in the picture I need to fix: Mould line on shoulder pad, some blue on the rim of the shoulderpad, some white on the boot.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try that next time
>>
>>47609597
If you're good an know the temperature of your black, try to use a matching temperature of gray or you can use a low chroma color with the a matching temperature to give it a little more life.
>>
>>47609863
How do you fuck up trims? I'm geniuenly interested.
Anyways, black out lenses before painting them red and leave some of the black on the edges. It's a smal detail but it makes a huge diffrence.
>>
>>47609597
There are different approaches you can take, depending on what you are after.

>industial and worn stuff
Paint brown into crevices and use a metal color along raised edges and around joint to signify chipped paint and act as highlights

>cold schemes
sharp highlights using blue up to white. It's important to keep the lines consistent and tight. You can always clean up later with the base black.

>soft black, large areas
Don't use black, use a dark grey instead and wash it down with blacks, browns or blues, depending on what color temperature you are going for.
Similarly you can instead tint your colors with blue, green or brown if you want to avoid the - usually - pretty boring looking greys

>making a distinction between metal and cloth areas
Usually helps if you highlight with different colors. I find that when painting cloth, highlighting with a bit of skin color works well.

>laquered armor, chitin, plastics, visors
Just black and gloss varnish. Works well if you paint a gradient underneath the varnish too, but using gloss basically means you can do the actual light do the highlighting for you.

You could also make a distinction between edge highlights, soft highlights, i.e. gradients over the entire surface your are painting as opposed to the raised edges as you would when edge highlighting, and painterly highlights like you'd see in old school comic books and the like.

Black can be tricky, but there are loads of different ways to approach this.
>>
>>47609894
agree with this anon.
An extra edge highlight on the blue, but more importantly a highlight on the reds.
The flesh looks good though as do the details.
>>
>>47609908
I think that might have been finishing up that rim in a hurry and then forgetting about it like a retard when I came back to the model. Plus, like I said, kinda shaky so I typically need to go back over stuff or it looks like someone stuck a paintbrush to a vibrator

But cheers for the advice on eyes, i thought they looked a bit off
>>
>>47609910
motherfucker knows his color tempetures.

I'm a bit annoyed that there doesn't seem to be an actual warm and cool black, I know you can mix to get that, but I'm spoiled from oil painting out of a huge collection.

Abbadon is neutral but ever so slightly to the cool right? it looks that way to me, but I'm not a superchromatic.

Hey /tg/ i am finally getting around to working on my space marines but i decided that the stock models just look to unproportionally silly to even consider them. SO i am in the process of building my own truescale marien conversion parts.
Pic related is my first WIP attempt at a basic armor i can later make cats of and adapt to represent all 7 versions of power armor.
I still gotta get soem smoothing out done and work a bit on the proportioning fo shoulders and arms and i also need to build a backpack but i think for a first try it actually went better than expected.
>>
So after talking with my professional painting teacher (canvas not mini), about his stupid amount of knowledge about how paint is made, I thought I'd right up a little primer on What's In Your Paint.

Almost all paints are emulsions, that is a mixture that contains a liquid and solids or other liquids that are not desolved in that liquid but suspended within it.
There are basically three parts to the paint emulsion: Pigment, Medium and emulsifier.

Pigment is the part that actually has the color, typically these are very finally ground particles.
Medium is the liquid that pigment is suspended within.
And the emulsipher surrounds and binds the pigments within the medium so that it can be evenly spread, have a thicker texture, and will hold it to the surface it is painted on.

The difference between acyrlic, oil, other base types of paint is the chemicals in the medium and emulsifier. They won't mix, can react to each other poorly, and change the way it holds to a surface.

Model paint is a form of acrylic paint, and can be mixed with many other forms of acrylic paint. The difference, is the ratio of medium to emulsifier. Model paint has high medium to emulsifier ratio, in addition to a pigment content similar to the higher ends of acrylic paint.

If you mix in non-modeling acrylic paints, you'll get too much emulsifier which you will need to thin with lots of medium, which will me the resulting mixture will have a very low pigment ratio, especially if you use lower end acrylic paint. So it will work, but will take lots and lots of coats to get good coverage.
>>
>>47611050
>right up
anon....
>>
>>47611050
different types of model paints might feel different because of slight differences in part ratio, or in the type of chemical used in the medium and/or emulsifier. They should still mix without problem, because they will share the same qualities in terms of solubility and binding.

Washes, shades, and glazes are a lightly different matter, as they are more properly inks. The pigment in them is a liquid, or at least dissolved within a liquid. They are solutions, not emulsions. They won't separate, and if mixed with the paints the color will desolve into the medium rather than being suspended in the pigment/emulsifier part. This means that the shade color can separate out when applied to the model.
This can be an intended effect if using Wash Painting.

Primer is paint with a chemical in the medium/emulsifier that binds to different materials, namely it holds to metals and plastics well, where most paint likes to bind to other paint. Primer can be mixed with other paints, see the beginning paragraph, but it won't flow or dry like normal paint, so get a primer in the color you want, don't try to paint with it.

Hanging ammobelt yes or no? Alternately I'll try making a long one that goes to a contain on the back or something, but that seems like a LOT of work and I'm not even sure it'll look good.

How the bullet size? I'm thinking of using the ejecting brass from the loota kit that I have lying around when I eventually make the stubber for the other cultist squad that I plan on being in a firing pose. The ork brass is larger than this ammo belt though. Not sure if varying ammo sizes for the same stubber models are gonna look weird, or if the difference is noticeable at all. Eyeballing the actual cultist heavy stubber model, his ammo belt seems larger too. Silly part is that my belt is what's supposed to feed the IG heavy bolter.

Still not sure what to do with the gun (and backpack). Gray seems to kinda work but I can't figure out how to make it look good. Dunno what color to go with if not gray, though, I can't decide if more green would look good. Maybe a slightly different green? I dunno.

Also don't really know what to do with the face. Extremely skeptical of my ability to paint eyes. Maybe I'll try it using a toothpick or something.

You know what? You're right, I'm gonna go put my actual camera on charge and take a decent pic later tonight.

To be honest a lot of the sloppyness on this was me trying multiple different things before picking what I liked, his shield started off red with a silver hammer for instance, that's also why some bits look a little heavy.

My plan was to use this guy as a test bed and then do whatever I ended up with for the rest of my guys tripping and re-doing him eventually when it made sense.

Y'know, I got a few "thin yer paints" comments on one of my more recent projects, and I *know* thinning my paint isn't the problem... but I'm seriously starting to suspect that it's my primer that is too heavy to begin with and thus it wouldn't matter how much I'd thinned my paints - I'd be damned anyway!

Both of the Vallejo Air ranges are meant to be really good from what I hear. Scale75 are meant to be really good aswell and they come in a few more colours, not just normal metal colours.
>>
>>47621412
GW metals are pretty good.

Every great journey starts with one step m8.

Just keep on working!

Look at op's pic befire posting, also maybe highlight the armour?
>>
>>47621769
Shade plus highlighting desu, you really need to differentiate the armour plates.

Pic?

I'm not gonna strip my first mini!

I'll just try to do better on the next one.

>>47617874
I don't think that's the case. My primer went on pretty smooth, I think. When I prime the next one I'll take a picture before I start painting just in case, though.

Unlike you, I am reasonably certain that the thinness of my paint has definitely not been correct. Every video or technique I watch / am told seems to produce a different result and none of them really seem to be correct.

>>47610251
I like the one on the right!

You went overboard with the bone, though, I think you need to use it way more sparingly. Maybe just the claws and gun.

WIP Wyvern I'm working on. Just tried to do the camo pattern, haven't cleaned it up yet but I've always been awful at doing that.
>>
So how do you use mediums? Do you just do the same as you do with water?

Where are the scout backpacks from?

Working too hard m8.

They sell ladders in scale at most model train stores.

Any advice on making some Tau themed terrain?

Someone needs to represent the xenos at the FLGS, 9/10 of terrain is either forests or Imperium.
>>
>>47621769
Its not particularly messy, just unifinished. You've basically just basecoated it. Just washing the green would improve the model no end, then highlighting the raised areas would improve it further.
>>
>>47614429
remember to cut off the aquila on his flak
alternately, defile it (although it never looks as good as you imagine with slashed up aquilas)

Vallejo Liquid Gold range.
>>
>>47622569
Cool, I'm doing some damage control tonight. Do you wash with a darker or lighter colour?

The snakebite look in your reference is 95% paint job, i've just started snakebites too, here's one of my nobz from the last WIP.

Have to say also, savage orks are too feral looking for my tastes.
>>
what colour do you guys think for the sword, silver, or gold like the rest of the metals?

The helmet is now way too small. Remember that a helmet is not supposed to the size of a head (which what you've done).
>>
>>47622921
What's the mini?
>>
>>47622416
Look to the Tidewall for the aesthetics.

For residential consider a similar look mixed with brutalist architecture. Smooth surfaces broken up with raised paneling. This can be achieved by making smooth cornered rectangles and squares made of medium thickness plasticard.

Should I attempt to put some kind of writing on the purity seals?
>>
>>47622722
Darker. It basically gathers in the recesses to give nice easy shadows. It will instantly make your model look a lot better. There's loads more on top of that you could do, but as an easy first step it really makes a big difference.
>>
>>47623274
yes, thin some black or dark brown and do wiggly lines to represent lines of writing.

Clean up your whites and golds and work on your highlights though...
>>
>>47620536
Could be not mixing enough, or wrong proportions. The latter can especially be a problem with small amounts. Say you need to mix the resin 1:1 and your scale shows the weight in grams only. When mixing 100g of resin, 49 or 51 grams is not going to make a difference. When mixing 5 grams? 1g is lot

>>47623374
Cheers anon, i'm pretty bad at highlighting honestly. What should I be doing to highlight the black/bronze. Should do I gold around the edges of the bronze or is that a bad idea.

Anything i should improve besides the base and touchups here and there?
>>
>>47623506
i think it looks too clean, but if it matches your army, then that's good i suppose. nice work on the red highlights, what paints did you use?
>>
>>47623278
Thanks mang, will post a pic when it's done

Thanks. Khorne Red base, drybrush with Mephiston red and edge highlights with Evil sunz scarlet

I also accidentally broke off the antenna

halp me wip, i received my forgeworld leeman russ turret, and with all the stuff i got this piece, what is supposed to be?
>>
>>47622876
Same here, I want them to look subtle and not scream I'M UNCIVILIZED EVEN BY ORK STANDARDS.
I'd do the crazy conversion like you do for characters and any special boys. Greenstuff converting for 100 boys is killer.
>>
>>47623506
Needs some shading in all the recesses.
Apply some sacred oils.
>>
>>47614458
I'm the anon stripping the tubs of orks at the moment.
I'm pretty heavily leaning towards blood axes myself.
I fear that my penchant for 'my dudes' levels of conversion would kill me doing an ork army though.

>>47615321

I don't have a stubber bit lying around. Is their a slot of the left side of the stubber that it feeds from? It wouldn't feed straight from the bottom.

Take that ammo belt and green stuff it to the left side and let it hang straight down. No one will see the greenstuff pressed against his torso.
>>
>>47617391
Supposedly, other metallic colors can be used as well. GW recommended copper for green and gold for red in White Dwarf Weekly.
>>
>>47623669
i think it's for the underside of the turret. to fit it to the body. but i'm not sure, since it doesnt really fit. my first FW russ i just shaved it for ages till it kind of fit, the second one i just didnt use it

Some less likely culprits:
- batch of resin is getting contaminated (either by something while mixing or by something in the mold
- resin is failing to reach cure temperature (generally only happens on really twiggy parts; preheating the mold sometimes cures this)
