Shinobi Quest #7

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime, Hinata Hyuuga, Nori Uzumaki and Ebisu Hiruko set out for their first official mission as Team 7, under Ebisu’s leadership. The group headed to the village of Katabami, in the Land of Rivers, escorting a tax official, Yoku, who was employed by the Daimyo of the Land of Fire. Although none of the young shinobi were particularly happy about the implications of the mission, they were somewhat relieved not to be chasing cats.

After arriving in Katabami, Yoku and Team 7 went to the local inn to rest up for the night, while Tsuki decided to stay alert. Her decision soon paid off, as she was able to catch a local man attempting to dispose of Yoku. After distracting him with a pose and some flashy words, the man was subdued. Ebisu and Nori were able to interrogate the man, and learned that the Village elder’s son had a plot to stop Yoku and “Save the Village”, but had disappeared, causing the young man to act when he saw the group alive.

We rejoin Team 7 the next morning, overseeing the payment, when a sudden storm had rolled in, despite the clear skies mere moments before…..

“Sensei, it’s raining.” you hear HInata’s voice, coming from above. She had been stationed on the roof to keep watch with her Byakugan.

“Strange, it was clear just a moment ago. But rain itself isn’t much to worry about.” Ebisu responds to her.

You take a moment to look outside- sure enough, it’s started to rain.

While Yoku and the Village Elder are doing business, the sound of the rain falling on the roof mutes their conversation, ever so slightly. You aren’t really paying attention to it, anyway. You’ve been on guard ever since the attempt of Yoku’s life.

Eventually, Hinata’s voice rings out again. “Sensei. Something’s coming. A mist is filling in the south end of the valley….” she pauses. “I can’t see through it with my Byakugan.” she finally states after a few more moments.

Isn’t the Byakugan supposed to unblockable? It couldn’t possibly be natural….

“....Mist, you said?” Ebisu’s voice has hardened.

“Yes, sensei. The rain seems to be coming down harder now, as well….” Hinata reports, quietly.

“Girls, stay inside. Keep watch over Yoku and the Elder.” he orders, exhaling. “It may be nothing, but I fear the Elder’s son may have found that rogue ninja he was looking for.”

Ebisu rises, checks his gear, then walks outside, into the rain.

You…

1. Listen to your sensei. Stay here, stay on guard.
2. Follow him.
3. Have one of your teammates follow him.

You decide to listen to Ebisu-sensei. You’re sure he can handle whatever’s out there. Besides, you have your own job to do. Checking your inventory, you know that you still have plenty of paper bombs, explosive tags, wire, and kunai. Good.

You walk to into the Elder’s room, and speak to both him and Yoku. “There’s something going on outside. Our sensei has gone to check it out. No need to worry right now.”

Yoku frowns, and turns to the elder. “Another trick? After I had just committed to trying to get his lordship to forgive your son’s transgressions!?” He seems to have gotten a bit of his bite back, after the morning’s attempt on his life.

The old man grovels. “N-no! I swear! I didn’t know anything about any plans. I was only told of him leaving this morning!”

As they continue to go back and forth, you hear Hinata again. “Tsuki-hime, Nori, the storm has kicked up even worse- I’m sure I just saw a bolt of lightn-”

*FWOOM*

A peal of thunder roars, and the building shakes, just a little.

“Hinata, where’s sensei?” Nori barks, seeming impatient.

“He’s in the village square- the mist is really thickening, it’s getting tough to see him. There are… others, too. I cannot really make them out. Nine, in total?”

Whomever it is has friends, then.

You…

You and Nori take a few moments to rig a few rudimentary traps outside the house- burying kunai blade up in the now damp ground, tying explosive tags to tripwire between a few of the trees, and so-on. Most of them are setup outside to slow down or stall attackers, since you don’t have much to work with. As the two of you work, you hear Hinata yell from the roof once more.

“They’re coming this way! Not all of them, but about six of them!

They’re coming. You were going to send a shadow clone to help sensei, but it seems like you may not have time….

You and Team 7….

1. Assume a defensive formation, with you and Hinata in back, with Nori in front.
2. Assume an aggressive stance, with Hinata and Nori up front, backed up by a shadow clone.
3. Go all or nothing, with everyone up front.
4. Fall back and let them fall into your traps!

“Fall back!, Take up a defensive position by the door!” you shout, acting immediately.

You hear the crash of thunder again, as loud as before.

Hinata jumps down from the roof, and you and Nori run back to meet her by the door. As you do, you hear a man yell in pain as he steps into the kunai trap you and Nori had buried.

As you get into position, the telltale explosion of your tags goes off, no doubt triggered by the tripwire. Nori stands in front, with you and Hinata in the rear.

Suddenly, four men appear- two were either taken out or momentarily disabled by your traps.

You steel yourself- this is a fight for your life. It certainly won’t be your last.

You…

1. Make a shadow clone to even the odds.
2. Use your shortbow as they approach
3. Give Hinata your shortbow- she’s probably a better shot than you, with her Byakugan.

Quickly, you execute the Shadow Clone Technique. That should help even the odds a little…

As the second Tsuki appears, you quickly hand her the bow and your quiver. She nods, and you produce your fan. As you turn back to the battle you hear Nori roar.

“Come and get me, cowards! Scared of a little girl?” she eggs them on.

She knows her part very well, at least. You and Hinata space yourselves out, both of you ready. Quickly, the men rush Nori, who begins fighting them off. Although there’s four of them, she’s faster, and know you have her back. You hear the *thwip* of your shortbow soon after- right as Nori feints to the right, an arrow lodges itself in the shoulder of the man who just missed Nori. Immediately, you follow up, throwing your fan in an arc that catches the man in the throat.
Hinata has been peppering the others with kunai, although not really doing more than keeping them at bay. Shortly though, Nori is back in view, and smashes the closest man under the jaw with a wicked uppercut. You knew how strong those strikes were- he’s probably out.

With two of them down, you begin to encircle the men, when one rushes at Hinata. In an instant her Byakugan activate, and she catches the man’s arm, launches him overhead, and buries a few kunai in his gut. You turn back to see a man running at you! ….Only for a bright point of light to emerge from the front of his throat. As he clutches his throat, you see Nori yank backwards- the bright chain seems to be wrapped around one of her arms- is it made of chakra?

“Get over here, you ass. It’s rude to run from a lady who isn’t finished with you yet, ya know?” she says through gritted teeth. You hear rustling behind you- but it’s quickly followed by another *thwip* from your clone releasing another shot.
>>
That went well, although they definitely aren’t shinobi. Maybe just some thugs…?

As Nori begins to finish off her prey, you walk over to Hinata. The man she countered before seems to be scooting back from her, trying to escape- the wet mud impeding his flight.

“S-stay back! Brother Riaga will bury you all! The Kurosuki Family will free this town from tyranny!”

The fight seems over for the moment. You…

“Hinata, bind up the survivor- Nori, question him. You’re good at that, right? I’m gonna go check on the client.” you say, ordering you squad quickly.

“Heh, yeah princess. Uncle Jiraiya taught me how to deal with men like these.” She says through a smile…..

You suppress a shudder.

As the two of them head towards the now crying man, you head inside the residence. Both Yoku and the Elder are where you left them, although they both look concerned.
“Everything’s fine. Enemy has been dealt with. We’re checking on our teacher and taking a prisoner as we speak.” you reassure them. The Elder and Yoku both nod gravely, and don’t seem inclined to say much.

You take a moment to do a lap around the building, and verify the corpses. 5 bodies, and with Nori’s new friend, that would make six, as Hinata said. Besides the hooded robes they wear, they don’t seem to have any sign of identification, and as such are definitely not shinobi.

You walk back over to the front of the building, where Nori and Hinata are. You can tell Hinata is trying to look into the distance, but her frown tells you she doesn’t seem to be having much luck. Nori turns to you and reports. “Before he passed out, he said they are the Kurosuki Family, a group that has enlisted men from the surrounding area to “free” villages from the oppression of the Daimyo. He said they‘re led by a man named Raiga- and that he’s a powerful ninja.

Right as Nori says that, you feel the chakra from your clone return- and it’s memories flood into you...

You’re standing near Ebisu-sensei… the rain seems more dense, here. A man stand apart from you- wearing a similar cloak as the men you just dispatched. Two men in this same outfit are splayed out on the ground- Ebisu’s work.

The man seems to have a weird hunch on his back- or he’s carrying a backpack. He speaks.
“Oh, my brothers! This Leaf Shinobi has felled you! I shall hold a funeral for you both when he is dead- how I will miss you….” He begins to cry.

“Why do such good men have to die? It pains me so… I will celebrate my memories of them soon.” He looks up and laughs. “And you mean to bring a young girl into battle against the Kurosuki Family? How the mighty Leaf has fallen!”

This man must be Raiga.

Ebisu-sensei speaks. “Those blades you carry… I wouldn’t forget them. Are you one of the Seven Swordman of the Mist?”

You look to his hips- two very unique looking blades hang at his hips.

“Huh, do I know you, Four-eyes?” Raiga squints, looking at the two of you. “Oh-ho! Now I remember! It’s been so long! Almost 14 years… since the war. When that strange old man nearly killed us all…”

“How nostalgic! I will give you the greatest of funerals, Four-eyes! Making remember my comrades…..”

Thunder crashes once again. You’re back with Nori and Hinata. Your clone must have expired at this point.

You…

We have a rare opportunity we know whom our foe is and were able to figure out he must use lightning techniques, so if anyone knows wind release now is the time. Otherwise we also now have the opportunity to plan a counter.

I suggest we ourselves draw his focus to pin point his position, nori chain locks him and Hinata puts an arrow into him using the glow of the chains if she can't quite make him out. Once he has some arrows in him, disarm him and get whatever is on his back away from him.

Remain calm…. Easier said then done.

“Ladies” you say, getting Nori and Hinata’s attention. “Our Sensei is currently fighting Raiga- one of the Seven Swordman of the Mist. We’re going to need to back him up- it seems like he took out the remainder of the thugs though- I didn’t see any more.”

Hinata and Nori look worried, although Nori does fire off a question. “You’ve been using Shadow Clones this whole time, right? That’s how you know this?”

“Yes, although I really don’t have time to explain the why or how right now.” you fire back.
“This storm is most likely of his making- do either of you know any wind-aligned techniques?”

Hinata shakes her head, and Nori just looks down into the mud.
“My chakra nature is wind, like my brother’s- but I haven’t taken the time to learn any wind-aligned skills. Sorry.” she says, probably the first time you’ve actually heard genuine regret in her voice.

“We won’t worry about it for now, then. We need to come up with a plan.” you respond.

You….
1. Go with Nori to backup Sensei. Hinata stays behind to guard the client.

As much as I want the glory, they stand a better chance. Of course, we can try stretching our skills a bit and send a clone with them.

Find a place to hide him, then send a clone with the bow to back them up.

I don't know about all these plans, don't forget our shadow clone died instantly before it even had time to react. That guy is throwing around no-joke lightning bolts, that shit's dangerous. Our shadow clone is the only one of us that can take a hit.

Shadow clones die if you look at them wrong. Plus we do have lightning affinity so maybe we can ground the bolts, kinda like a lightning rod?
>>
>>47514574
shadow clones have the equivalent 1 hp iirc, they die to pretty much anything so I doubt that the bolts would be a one-shot for our squad, a grievous wound for sure though, thats why we should send a clone with them.

Those are regular clones.

Shadow clones can take more damage.

>>47514620
Not if we can't actually use lightning release, maybe we could pull it out of our ass, but that stuff usually takes months of training.

>>47514643
>>47514661
Shadow clones can be pretty durable, don't forget that ninja don't pul their punches, what looks like a light tap is much stronger han you think. We've see shadow clones bleed, get organ damage, and in one case disintegrate painfully without popping. Though with the level of chakra in ours I don't expect it to be very durable.
>>
>>47514661
Ah, still probably less than the actual person though? either way sending a disposable unit along with our best close quarters fighters make sense.

Fun idea: tie some of our presumably metal trip wire to an arrow, have a shadow clone or Hinata engage with Raiga and surreptitiously attach the free end to him, fire the arrow straight up to attract lightning, Ohohohoho~ as he electrocutes himself.

Somewhere between Pein flattenning Konoha and Obito becoming the ten tails jinchurikki the powerlevels got so high tricks were pointless, but up until then there were a lot of great fights.

“Alright, here’s what we’re gonna do. You two are leagues better in close quarters than I am, and I feeling that will be necessary. I’ll send another Shadow Clone with you, and will stay here to protect the client.

Both Hinata and Nori nod, and you again work on making a Shadow Clone- although you’re beginning to feel a little winded. Once it’s formed, you have the clone Tsuki your bow and arrow, so it has something more concrete to attack with, along with some of your supplies.

Once it’s equipped, the three girls immediately set off to where Raiga and Ebisu sensei had been before, with your clone guiding them.

They’re out of sight within a few moments, so you take a minute to reset some of the traps along the path to the house- to give you an early warning if anything else happens to come with way. Eventually you reach Nori’s victim, and drag him inside. You set him up in a corner of the house, away from anyone else.

Then, you wait. You focus primarily on trying to keep the clone active- keeping it active and far away means that it’s going to burn through chakra very quickly. Worrying about your sensei and your teammates isn’t helping, either.

Time continues to pass, with thunder crashing all the while.

You begin to break out in a sweat- you really aren’t sure how much longer you’re going to be able to hold the jutsu…..

Just thought about it, I bet the clones popping so easily is so their caster doesn't have to deal with the memory of slowly dying from a kunai to the gut or what have you.
>>
>>47515601
I think it's just how much chakra they take, like keeping awake and mobile with a fatal wound uses a lot of chakra, chakra that you could instead get back and recycle into more healthy clones. If it's really important that that clone in particular lives you can do it, but it's usually better to just pop it and make a new one.
>>

Neon release? Flashy, fashionable, smells nice, horribly poisonous and searingly hot. I like it. Don't forget that plasma produces invisible deadly poison gas!

It's a fighting style that revolves around hitting invisible microscopic points on an angry ninja. It also requires the ability to shoot chakra spikes out of your skin, which we don't have. It's also a highly guarded secret technique of a major clan.

Plasma isn't really firey enough. You can make plasma with lightning release. kekkai genkei are supposed to be totally different from their two base elements. Ice is nothing like water or wind, wood isn't earth or water, etc...

This thing is something related to fire and lightning, but not actually something you can emulate with either one. I think it would be far more interesting as a new thing. Imagine a fire that can instantly travel through metal, electrocute people, burn flammable objects, etc... We could set an entire city on fire through one telephone pole. And if anyone tries to put it out with water it spreads through the water, and if anyone tries to blow it out with wind it just burns hotter.

That's way cooler than plasma.

...and then you feel the clone fade.

It had almost nothing left.

The memories overtake you…..

The three of you are standing by Ebisu-sensei- and he looks a little worse for ware. His outfit is frayed in places, and you can tell that fight may not have been going his way before you arrived. His glasses are gone- you don’t see them anywhere.

“Oh, four-eyes. Now your little gaggle of girls has return to defend their master. It’s a little ironic, isn’t it? Fourteen years ago, that old man died to save you, and now you’re going to die here to protect them! Wonderful! I’m so glad I was able to witness this a second time!” Raiga says, tears streaming down his face.

“I’m going to give you all a huge funeral! For the four-eyed chicken and his little hatchlings! Hahahahaha!”

This man is insane, clearly. You wonder what made him this way- maybe he always was? You have heard rather nasty rumors about the Village of the Mist….

He takes off his cloak- seems like the hump you noticed before was a backpack. He brandishes his blades- wicked and segmented, with sprouting edges.

“It’s time to start your funeral, four-eyes. I’ll even keep the girls alive to watch.”

He raises his swords, crossing them. As if on command, lightning strikes them from above.

“Ninja Art: Lightning Strike Armor!”

Electricity surrounds him, crackling loudly. You guess it will fry whomever hits him- not pleasant.

Raiga, however, isn’t finished.

(Sorry, lots of long form here.)
>>
“Ninja Art: Fangs of Lightning!” he roars over the sound of the storm. Electricity pours out of the swords, back towards the clouds above.

“Girls, move! It’ll be coming from above!” Ebisu warns, as he begins to take evasive action. Following his lead, the three of you scatter- and not a moment too soon. Your ears ring as a white bolt of lightning strikes where you were mere moments before.

As your vision clears, you look over to Ebisu-sensei, who seems to have made several clones of himself. Meanwhile, both Nori and Hinata are running the opposite direction as Ebisu, trying to get an advantageous position. You wonder.. How much force does it take to pop that shield?

Raiga seems more preoccupied with Ebisu, anyway.

“Clones won’t help you, four-eyes! Ninja Art: Lightning Burial!” he yells, crossing his blades above his head one more. Lightning strikes again, this time spreading out from his position in wide, erratic arcs. It pops several of Ebisu-sensei’s clones, although Ebisu himself is able to dodge just to the side of one. You see him breath in- he’s about to use a jutsu. Better no than never!

Quickly run towards Raiga, and nock an arrow in your bow as you do. He turns to you just as you fire it- and laughs as the arrow burns up against his lightning shield. “Sorry girl! It’s going to take more than”-
“Fire Dragon Bullet!” you Ebisu say as the distracted man is bathed in flame. Between the rain, the fire of the technique, and Raiga’s lightning shield, a minor cloud of steam forms around the man.

Bright flashes of light come from his immediate left shortly afterward; a sight you recognize. Two shining chains of chakra, extending from Nori’s arms to the cloud of smoke. “Hinata! Get him! I’m not sure how long I can hold him!” Nori yells as the wispy cloud is blown away by the storm.

“Right!” You see Hinata surge towards the man, now bound with Nori’s chains. “Gentle Fist! Eight Trigrams: 32 Palms!”

You can’t make out much from your position, although Hinata seems to be unleashing a flurry of blows. As they all connect- she jumps back to a safe distance. “There, he shouldn’t be able to use chakra based attacks a for while!”

Riaga laughs again. “You think I’m just limited to using my own chakra?” His grip on the swords in his hands tighten. “Lightning! I call to you!” he yells- and as if on command, lightning strikes the man, who is seemingly unprotected.

“Ninja Art: Lightning Dragon Tornado!”

Raiga begins to spin, forming a great rising typhoon. Nori, whose chains are still attached, is thrown into a nearby cliffside. The twister takes the form of a great dragon, and you hear Riaga’s voice from inside. “I lied, Four-eyes! Your little hatchlings are too annoying! I’ll have you attend their funerals instead!”

The great twisting form lurches forward, towards Hinata. There’s a blur- you see Hinata catapulted away from the attack as Ebisu pushes her out of the way- and takes the entire attack himself.

For our release - considering >>47516277, we could go with Inferno or Combustion release, or even Conflagration, if we wanted. Blue fire, if it's not burning something that makes it blue, is hotter than regular flame. I don't know if that would limit us to fire style techniques, but I'm sure Wargle's got some stuff up his sleeve.

We could go with Comet Release, to keep up the Moon Princess thing. Because comets burning blue always seems to be a thing in media. I just don't think Plasma quite fits.

“....Eh? Four-eyes? Decided it’s time to fulfill the destiny that began fourteen years ago?”

As the smoke clears, you can see it- Ebisu is holding man tightly- but both of Raiga’s blades are through his stomach. His glasses are off.

“Maybe. But you aren’t going to hurt them any longer.” Ebisu says, not breaking eye contact with the man.”

“Eugh, this some kind of genjutsu…? I… can’t see! What is this! Let me go, four-eyes!”

“Tsuki, please get Nori. She’s tough, though she’s probably injured. I can hold him here, just-”

“I SAID LET ME GO, FOUR EYES! I’LL FRY YOU HERE AND NOW!” Riaga roars- you can tell he’s about to break out of the Genjutsu.

“That’s a clone, right Tsuki?” Ebisu asks, his voice faint.

“Yes, sensei.” you respond.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t teach you all for longer. Tell Guy I avenged his father…. Please.”

QUICK! Give Ebisu the Curry of Life!

They'll call us
>Team Black Widow
and tell horror stories in the jonin lounge, drawing straws for who has to be our jonin-sensei next. We'll have to wear all black since we have to go to a funeral after every mission.

This breaks the cutie.

Glasses only go to his memorial if no one wants them for their own. I dunno if anyone will but wearing your dead sensei/friend's shit goes before sticking it on a rock. That's just how it works.
Might be nice to hide Hinata's special eyes, wouldn't clash aesthetically the same way it would on tsuki or nori, IMO

We'll get matching shades in memory of Ebisu. It'll be very goth

You see Hinata first, flung clear of the blast radius by sensei before. She’s pretty roughed up- but it doesn’t take much to wake her.

“Hinata. I need you to find Nori.”

“Nori, sure. But what happened?” she responds, quickly picking herself up.

“Later, Hinata. Find Nori.”

You see her Byakugan focus---

“She crashed into the cliffside, above that grove of trees. On the other side of that…

...huge crater.”

Wasting no time, you run to the location Hinata indicated. You find Nori, unconscious, but breathing. You hoist her up- it takes some doing, but you have energy to spare all of the sudden.

You bring her back to where Hinata is, and lay her out.

Hinata proceeds to look her over-
“She’s pretty beat up- but she seems to have some sort of natural healing going on, with that strange chakra of hers. She’ll be ok if we let her rest, more than likely.”

You barely hear her. Getting up, you walk over towards the crater.

First, you see his glasses- scuffed and chipped from the fall, but not broken. You gingerly pick them up, and pocket them.

In the crater itself, you see two things that stick out- a charred Leaf Headband plate, and Raiga’s swords, lying not too far off in the distance.

You pick up his headplate. Wet drops begin to fall on the metal- tears? Are these your tears?

You…
1. Let it out.
2. Hold it in. We can’t afford to do this now.
3. Investigate the swords.

If we're the one who keeps them I'd rather keep them tucked into our collar except for dramatic moments than worn. I don't think it'd look good.

I am down for this.

>Hinata pre-emptively apologizing to them on their first day
>Nori uncaring and inattentive because what does it matter, they're going to be killed eventually
>Tsuki promising to pay for their funeral

Adora-sad

Ask Hinata if she sees Raiga around.

I don't want Hinata to have to be the one who holds it together. The mission isn't over yet, we can't let our guard down.

Honestly in my opinion we sold just ditch the tax and take the taxman back. We're PROBABLY past the hired ninjas... but I don't really want to risk it with just three genin. And you know, the tax is HIS job, our job is to protect him. In this case protecting him might include "fuck the tax"

Holding the swords that fell our teacher...we will take them, they will be used to defend what he died for, the leaf, his fellow ninja...his students. This was meant to be basic D rank...but no, had to go full B rank.
>>
Holding it together. Investigating weapons.

Do it for Hinata.

Writing.

Naw man, we can't fail this mission, Ebisu DIED for it.
>>
>>47517219
Take the swords, store them away so we can keep it hush hush. Take his glasses, as for the leaf headband, hold it close and let a few tears drop but hold it together.

We need to keep those swords. They're something to remember what happens when we're not strong enough, and we might be able to use them decently with our lightning affinity.
