A darker green version of a Dark Angel, obviously from the 2011 SM Game.

Raptors might seem reasonable, but when you push them their fatalism prevents them from efficiently working with others, and can even lead to a nearly suicidal disregard for their own safety.

Which when you're talking about a resource as valuable as an Astartes, and in Kill Teams which require the Battle Brothers to know they have each other's backs, that's a pretty fucking big inconvenience.

The blue kind of defeats the whole purpose of reconnaissance, but whatever...
>>
Marines were shock troops made to be a show of force, not to make surgical strikes. Few marine Legions find it necessary to hide.
>>
>>47496765
Blue is a good color for operating in darkness. But the gold gives them away.
>>
>>47496811

There's a number of different tactics that are employed by space marines. Some perform recon and surgical strikes, some strike from the shadows, some strike from the skies, others siege, some bombard, some rely on vehicles, some fight on the run, some stand and deliver... Space Marines are trained in all matters of war, not simply acting a shock-troops, and in many of these matters do they specialize. Of course, wars of attrition are never really Astartes fare, since they're so few in number as per chapter.

The legions were literally made to fall from the sky and convince various cultures to join the Imperium. They were made with weapons and armor strong enough to laugh at the weapons held by their enemies.

Like I said, some marines like to hide, but ultimately they were meant to be shock troops.

I kind of think of it like this: During the mid 1980s the Navy officially began switching over from the traditionally flamboyant squadron colors to "low visibility" colors. I say officially, because the practice of having bright blue and bright red heraldry on F14s continued right up until about 2004, so you had a mix of dark "gull" gray tomcats and the traditional color schemes. My guess is this is because of the attitude of the fighter pilots are themselves, so the practice persisted. I suppose the analogy could be applied to a futuristic but equally cavalier and flamboyant group of military men. More codex compliant chapters may tend to to paint their armor in dark green, gray, or khaki colors if they are participating in an extended ground operation, or if they are attached to the IG, or they know they are going up against an enemy that's particularly shooty like the Tau or some renegade, elite IG unit like the Elysians. Otherwise, they use their "parade" heraldry in quick, "shock and awe" assaults, or they happen to be pulling security at some high value facility. Other chapters like the Space Wolves, Templars, and Blood Angels don't give a flying fuck about concealment and go in like they stereotypically do, charging out of the drop pods, chainswords in hand, screaming like deranged lunatics about the Emperor, banking that the sheer audacity and shock of such a display will drive the enemy into a route, hoping to dominate the morale of the enemy through sheer aggression.

Is he even in the picture, though? For all we know, the person who made that pic is fucking with us.

Why would you sling a shotgun across your chest at port arms? Why is there no knife in the sheath on the Marines left chest?

I don't give a shit if that's the point, dumbass.

Kinda likes it is straight left of the ultramarine and to the right of the illuminated tree.
>>
>>47497483
Well bright, eye catching colors and that sort of heraldry makes sense for supersonic aircraft, as their pilots would mostly rely on visuals to identify their squadron members. That's a bit different from infantry forces.

It's not a cavalier fighter jock thing at all, only CAG planes have the saturated high-vis colors. CAG is short for Commander, Air Group (if there's one thing the military loves it's manhandling terms into catchy acronyms) and the alternate colorschemes serve as a way to make the lead aircraft of a squadron visually distinct. But,

>>47500930
that means visually distinct for logistical and deck operations, not combat. The speed and distances involved in 4th gen (and really 3rd gen was pushing it) fighter combat would make relying on visual friend/foe identification an incredibly liability in the best of cases, and essentially impossible in any realistic air theater.
>>
>>47498088
Well, I spotted the Ultramarine within a few seconds, so I suppose I shoot at him first.

Subdued aircraft patterns are to keep birds from being remotely targeted while they're grounded. Visual IFF hasn't been a thing since Korea.

Not dying until ordered by a superior officer in a funny hat to die fighting NOW for Emperor and Homeworld in an orderly and proficient and grimdark manner.

"Coward."
>>

Both correct, but the shock can be applied in many ways - a blaze of light and fire, the howling roar of crazed warriors, the very image of death silently striding out of graven clouds, soldiers appearing as if from nowhere, half the army being set into disarray with no readily apparent cause, enormous nigh-indestructible machines smashing towards you spewing exotic death, and so on.

All space marines, and especially the original legions, excel at shock and awe, but they have many ways and styles of doing so
>>
>>47497020
>The legions were literally made to fall from the sky and convince various cultures to join the Imperium

the codex astartes calls this maneuver STEEL REHN
>>

>>
>>47498088
>which one would you most likely shoot at first?
Doesn't matter because a piddly lasrifle/autogun wouldn't do more than chip the paint off a suit of power armor. If anything, the Reasonable Marine is wasting the Emperor's time by being sneaky about slaughtering his enemy.
>>
>>47503968
So Space Marines only hunt normal humans with lasrifles? That explains a lot.
>>
>>47504144
If anything concealing their actions counteracts their intended purpose as super-heavy shock troops.
>>
>>47496683
That tattoo says "just fuck my shit up".
>>
>>47496683
They generally fight opponents against whom camo wont do anything.
>>
>>47504250
This. Space Marines are the Emperor's angels of death. A huge part of their point is psychological warfare, both in favour of their allies and against their enemies. After all seeing a giant in blue armour hack your friend in half with a chainsword is a lot more terrifying than having him just die from a bolter shot to the chest, which any human could do.
