There is an international trade language, but only merchants and translators (which nobles generally keep on hand) speak it regularly. It's unwieldy for holding a conversation about anything more complex than the price of a duck.

It's not even a real inconvenience most of the time.
In a setting with diverse languages, the party is going to have a shared communication among them; and for most NPCs they'll have somebody with the language. Then you declare either:

And it's just annoying slowdown
