Why have Snakes always just been horrible fodder in fantasy, given how dangerous and badass they are in real life? Anyone have any examples where Snakes are proper threats in TG?
>>
A rattlesnake isn't much of a threat if you're wearing plate armor.

Because fantasy doesn't deal in snakes, it deals in reptiles, and between the snake-men (like nagas or yuan-ti), the gorgons, and the dragons/wywerns, the badass reptile angle is covered

>snakes
>not reptiles

I kind of get what you're going for here anon, but come on man.

because conan didn't even have to be awake to whip the dogshit out of a big snake in the pop stories.

Those are comic books. Main characters aren't allowed to die in those.

his post made sense

he just meant it doesnt deal in specifically snakes, it deals in reptiles at large, and unfortunately inside the reptiles group there are monsters more badass than snakes.

Id say itsbecause in western mythology snakes are agents if evil or undesireble gods. In Eastern, Pacific and South American mythos however they can be benevolent.

Which Western mythology?

Most well-known example would be Abrahamic mythology.

Snakes are ambush predators; so mid-level encounters should reflect that. Maybe the PCs are exploring a ruined town in a jungle and they've been warned by locals that there's a giant snake that haunts the area. Then you can build the tension until the snake makes its attack or the PCs manage to spot the snake. When the PCs are walking around the town and haven't yet encountered the snake, you could have them come across a MASSIVE discarded snake skin.

Only obvious one.

Any other examples?

Both Germanic (Jormundgrander at example) and Slavic (Zhmey).
Also, Egyptian, which is hardly western but had much influence on modern fantasy through many sources.

No, no example, but in regards to >>47466235 ?

Spitting cobra has no trouble aiming for eyeslits in helmets. Just homebrew something if you find slithery threats are lacking. Also, google alaspinian minidrag.
