You're struck by just how immense the pain in your abdomen is whilst hurtling through the air, further into the hallway. The only indication that your attacker exist at all is your own red blood outlining the shape of an otherwise invisible horn. You land hard upon the rough, uneven stone amidst a stagnant pool of blood and rotting vegetation, your armor only partially softening your fall. Fortunately the wound in your abdomen has already healed, though you don't recall exerting any conscious effort to close the jagged gash. A benefit of your expertise in the magical arts, no doubt.

Profectus angles his shield, sparks streaming from the metal surface as your unseen attacker carries on his assault. Darzi, standing just behind your elven compatriot, shoves her long bladed spear forward and buries it deep within what you assume to be the creature's chest. Cracking fills the air as a blue bolt of vys discharges from the spear's tip, sending shards of bone and bits of singed flesh flying through the air.
Flame, accompanied by the stench of burning hair, licks across some unseen surface suspended in midair. No doubt Darzi's attack caused the beast's fur to catch fire. Fulvia seems to use this as a marker for her own attack, willing into existence a half dozen globules of liquid fire and hurling them towards the patch of burning flesh. The first strikes the beast and spills across its shoulder, revealing much of its torso and right arm. The second strikes lower, exploding within its now gaping chest cavity. Unfortunately the others are snuffed out before they can reach the creature, simply vanishing as they make contact.

You leverage yourself onto one knee and brace your shield against the stone, steadying the barrel of your pistol against its rim. A thought occurs, and channeling vys into your armor's helm your perception of the world shifts. Lights and colors bloom everywhere, vibrant yellows seeming to radiate off the body of your prey and claw at the ghostly strands of blue and purple which seem to represent the ambient vys in your surroundings. Twin spirits composed of ash dance around the roiling ball of fire and vys that is Profectus' arm. It almost seems as though the power within is struggling to get out, but finds itself trapped by its stone shell.
You also note with some curiosity just how vibrant Fulvia appears. She gleams through the lens of the Sight, a walking embodiment of magical power. Designs etch their way across the surface of her skin, runic arrays you'd been unable to perceive previously filling the air around her for no obvious reason.
Unfortunately you have little time to study Fulvia or your other companions, the more pressing matter of concern is the beast before you. Though you're still unable to perceive the 'body' of the creature you can see something else. A pale white, worm-like creature running up roughly where you think the monster's spine ought to be. Branching off the larva's body are innumerable thin yellow tendrils, spreading throughout what is presumably its patchwork body like the roots of a tree. What's more, a runic array assembles itself rapidly in the air just in front of the beast. At a glance you can discern the rune for blood being affected by the rune for leech, but there are a number of others you don't recognize.

You adjust your aim, settling on the center of this maggot-like spirit and pumping Fire magic into the barrel of your pistol. Red begins to seep from the metal, polluting the air around you with surprising rapidity only to be swept away by the tide of ambient vys around you. Just as you squeeze the trigger, the veins of yellow begin to twitch and contract.
It leaps to the side, slamming itself bodily against the wall of the tunnel and trying to twist itself to face you, but you adjust your aim and fire. You're blinded by the resultant flash, a beam of red carving through the space between yourself and the beast. The explosion is immense, the roar of flame and the crash of stone against stone suddenly filling the tunnel even as a wave of blistering heat washes over you.
Cutting the flow of vys to your helmet reveals the full extent of the damage caused. The beast, now visible, lies amidst a blackened portion of the tunnel, now partially collapsed. Fortunately your companions seem mostly unharmed, but oddly thick rivers of once stagnant blood flow towards a point in space just in front of where the creature once stood, forming a thick, circular glob hovering apparently under its own power.

Just a PSA folks; the spirit possessed monster could weave runic arrays on the fly. It was confirmed that it did in fact, leave a trap. Our success allowed us to avoid it though. In the future for such pursuits, it would be highly advantageous to send out a swarm of Meseeks to trigger traps or ambushes.

You're met with a vague sense of agreement, though Darzi seems concerned. Before proceeding you glance from your shortsword to the heavy falcata that Profectus wields. They seem roughly similar in nature, even vaguely the same shape now that you really think about it. He seems leery, but hands you his falcata without complaint and accepts your shortsword. He swings it experimentally through the air, apparently deeming it an acceptable replacement. You tuck his falcata into your cloak and instead extract your trident, it's ability to damage the soul of a creature directly should prove advantageous while fighting a spirit.
As a group you advance down the tunnels, Profectus and Darzi flanking you on either side while Fulvia and Mortia follow behind. You maintain the flow of vys to your helmet, wary of encountering any unexpected surprises left for you by the fleeing worm. Your caution proves warranted, because just as you round a corner into a narrow hallway you spot a runic circle glowing faintly on the stone floor.

Almost by reflex you reinforce yourself with Metal magic, but unfortunately you don't notice the rune quick enough to stop Darzi from activating it, but channeling vys you pull moisture from the air and form it into a block of ice. Pulling it forward you slam the block into Darzi's helmet, knocking her away from the now activated runic array just as it activates. There's a momentary sensation of being pulled forward and then a deafening crack, the world suddenly gone silent. It appears as though a perfectly spherical portion of the tunnel ahead has simply been removed, cut away and leaving only smooth stone behind.
You feel something wet trickling down your checks, and focusing your will manage to repair your shattered eardrums. Profectus is less fortunate, having been pulled off his feet and now writhing about on the floor, his hands over his ears. He's screaming, cursing the gods from what you can discern, but you doubt he can hear himself. Darzi got the worst of it by far. She's missing her left foot entirely and seems like she might be unconscious.
You comfort yourself with the knowledge that at least nobody died. That's what's really important. Channeling vys you manage to repair Darzi's eardrums without too much trouble. She still isn't moving, but you'll deal with that later. For now you focus on regrowing her foot. Profectus stops shouting obscenities as Fulvia channels vys, apparently healing his wounds.

Darzi's Elaudian armor repairs itself as rapidly as you regrow her foot, soon sealing itself off once again around her healed limb. She jerks upright almost as soon as her armor finishes repairing itself, throwing herself to her feet and stumbling forward into the crater left by the activation of that rune. You manage to stop her before she gets too far, allowing her to steady herself.
Profectus has likewise pulled himself together, Fulvia and Mortia blessedly unaffected. Unfortunately there's no time to rest. {We're wasting time. Follow me.}
You set off again down the tunnels, your companions allowing you a greater lead this time. You don't have to travel far to find the spirit's nesting ground. Bones lie scattered about the floor, many of them so decayed they look as though the slightest disturbance could reduce them to dust. You spot the larval spirit immediately, spreading its roots through a skeletal figure still clutching a rusted sword and shield.
It rises jerkily to its feet, the bones held together seemingly by force of will alone. All that remains of the spirit is its head, but as its roots grow so too does its body. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to end this as quickly as you would've otherwise hoped. It's wrapped itself in a thin veneer of blue vys, glowing brightly even through the lens of the Sight.

Fulvia fires off a spell, a ball of sickly green vys latching itself to the surface of the barrier surrounding the spirit and spreading tendrils of black across the formerly unmarred surface. In its wake the barrier is left either destroyed or at the very least severely weakened, pockmarked by holes and held together only barely by the thinnest of strings.
