The one thing I like about visual media is that the pacing can be tailored to obtain certain effects on the audience, much more easily than in text. Taking nothing away from Tolkien, I think the Rohirrim charge from RoTK may be one of the best examples of how to convey the heroism and grandeur of a similar scene.
tl;dr: Tolkien is great, but I prefer the film's Rohirrim charge's way of showing things, even if it's not 100% faithful to the original.
