How comes 40k is popular with anyone aside from nihilist teenagers?
>>
>>47351596
Because it mocks and parodies edginess and nihilism often found in those teenagers.
>>
>>47351596
>Implying /tg/ isn't 95% nihilist teeanagers disguising their thinly veiled fanfictions as stories that "actually happened" in someone's "game".
>>
>>47351596
I like some of the ideas it has. I don't like it as a whole. I definitely don't like people screaming "FURR THE EMPERHURR" whenever something 40K related shows up in other stuff.
>>
>>47351629
Poe's law. Saying it's a parody might be giving it too much credit
>>
Because 40k has become so shitty and hated that it has become hipstercool to like it unironically.

Plus idiots.
>>
>>47351596
Same reason as D&D
>>
>>47351596
>with anyone aside from nihilist teenagers?
So everyone likes it except for nihilist teenagers?
>>
>>47351596
Because it's fun.

Used to be more fun but it is still fairly fun.
>>
>>47351596

Well, for one thing it's been around long enough for a lot of them to become edgy adults instead, who can actually afford it themselves.
>>
I like the concept of a species that has inherited a technology from their ancestor so advance that's beyond their understanding.
>>
>>47351596
>nihilist teenagers

lol its 2016 you wretched old piece of shit
>>
I find that 40k is very much like me: intelligent, nihilistic and with a wicked sense of humour.
>>

This guy. This guy is a reasonable human being who has his shit together. I tip my fedora to you sir. Good day.
>>
It's quite funny and has weird, guilty-pleasure tier aesthetics.
I can't understand why anyone else than nihilist teenagers would be able to take it deadly serious and still like it
>>

>>

Judge Dredd + Dune + Mad Max

It's a pretty fun concept.
Despite being fairly generic for British Sci-Fi, it's fairly unusual for American Sci-Fi which makes it feel fresh and fun over here.

Yeah, I've discovered over the years that there are a few too many /pol/-idiots who like the setting because they have no sense of irony and see it as the fantasy version of their views, but that doesn't make it stop being fun for me.
Also, the models are fun to put together.
>>
>>47351596
But anon, I'm a faithful Anglican!
>>
>>47351644
it originally started as a parody then slowly became the thing it made fun of over the years.
>>
>>47354405

This. It's just a really cool, original setting with a fuckton of content and depth.
>>

Not everyone likes chaos anon.
>>
>>47351596
Because there is a rich vein of absurdity and dark humor that runs through a lot of it that people overlook.
Also as science fiction in general has adopted cleaner, sleeker, aesthetics to reflect modern industrial design the pseudo-gothic clusterfuck which is the 40k aesthetic has only become more bold and distinctive by contrast.
>>
Because it's fun. No deeper meaning. I like big epic fights, both in scale of massive battles, and titanic entities or personalities colliding, and 40k has that in spades.
>>
Like with all settings that have accumulated content for decades, it got material that canplease anybody. Even the same character can be handled in a completely different manner depending on the author.

>>47354528
>depth
I wouldn't go that far.
But it's still pretty cool.
>>
>>47351596
I like the scale of it. The timescale, the scale of the wars, the scale of the god and the vast numbers involved.

You can have titanic crusades and monumental battles...then 2 sectors away they aren't even aware of that going on bar a few officials keeping in touch and the astropaths going "here about that shit in grimcdarkus sector?"

The Emperor alone is a huge reason for my interest, an ancient man from the dawn of time guiding his species and failing like any other man can fail, and then trying to make do and enduring pain beyond description every moment to keep his species alive.

There is so much going on in 40k and it isn't perfect (thanks Horus Heresy for making the Emperor seem like a moron) but as settings go it is one of my absolute favourites.

Plus I am British so it "clicks" with me, its dare I say it comfortable.

I know a guy who yells" blood for the blood God, skulls for the skull throne" when ever we play d&d or card games.

>>
>>47351596
It's a sandbox built on the bones of a thousand better settings. The original creators were really proud of the fact that they took just about everything relevant to British culture in the 80s and mushed it all together.

Just because it's grown corrupted and introverted, doesn't mean that isn't still there.
>>
>>47351596
I think because the ridiculous amount of lore thats been put into it over the years it essentially just touches on everything. It has army men, knights, mecha, demons, magic, cults, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. I constantly couldn't keep my attention on one genre at a time and left tons of projects unfinished, but 40k allows me to make diffrent aspects of my campaigns entirely diffrent genres. I can transition from Dead Space to Apocalypse Now to D&D to Star Trek to Mad Max to Conan and it all makes since because of decades of lore amd fluff to work with. Also, even though some people give it a grimdark 90s edgelord asthetic in their head, I always see it as campy 80s cult film in mine. It becomes what it needs to for other people. For the rpgs at least.

Like the stakes of every battle in 40k are planet wide or sector wide. This somehow doesn't make them seem more important than like...A battle for a small barony in england in other settings. That makes it a little worse, honestly. I'm annoyed that all faith in 40k seems to be just worship of some Warp power. I'd enjoy it more if enough sisters were low-level pyskers that their faith focused their powers into miracles, like how the Grey Knights are all pyskers that can use their powers squad by squad. At least then the faith itself would have meaning, instead of the Chaos God-Emperor sending in his Legion of the Damned daemons to kick shit in (instead of them being marines dying from a warp disease surviving by sheer willpower alone).
>>
>>47373457
>I'd enjoy it more if enough sisters were low-level pyskers that their faith focused their powers into miracles
That's exactly how it works, since all humans except blanks have low level of psychic activity.

IMO you got it backwards; warp power stems from faith and emotions. It's not the warp entity that creates the worship, it's the worship that creates the warp entity.
Like how they managed to create Nuffle from nothing in the Blood Bowl universe.

They Watch the Watchmen, which is pretty cool. I wish that would come back in the fluff in a big way.
Also, their gear looks really cool, and the fact that they're an all-lady faction who have "fucking scary" as a trait is pretty refreshing, desu.

I'm surprised no one has noted the one traitor marine who's reloading. It looks like he's has a sig in his mouth grill.

Actually, he's not reloading, and that's not a cig in his mouth; It's the pin to that GRENADE.

And they're based on Joan of Arc, which is a pretty cool model.

because people genuinely believe that the future depicted in this setting is good, that humanity will one day rule everything ever and that we are the most superior or even only extant beings in the universe and we are so obserdly overpowered that we will murder eat rape and genocide anything that gets in our way.

Basically yes there are probably edgy teenagers who like 40k because they have at least a brain stem to rub together in order to realize the world in 40k is 100% shit in all ways, but most people who like 40k literally are kryptofascists who think genocide is literally a great idea.

40k is the HFY crowd. I bet most of them only eat tendies too, but HFY without 40k is actually stupidly common. Before 40kid autists got ahold of the idea it was called anthropocentrism.

There is something for everyone in 40k pretty much. I mainly just like imperial guard and orks though. I mainly just like the stories that spring from imperial guardsmen giving everything and being a shining light of human defiance in order to survive even another day fighting an already lost fight. Its just really cool like that and its a setting that really owns its own outragousness really well.

Read the book people, Dark Hunters: Umbra Sumus by Paul Kearney. It is fantastic, everything a novel about an unknown chapter should be.
I always do some shilling about i when I can since poor Paul got buttfucked by naming rights and the book never got published. You can find it on torrents though, so GO READ IT

no it fucking wasn't

It was made as a pastiche of things that dirty british metalheads liked in the late 70's and early-mid 80's. There is parody WITHIN it, but the setting itself was started as a celebration of over the top nerd shit.

I don't really mind the boobplate, considering the rest of their armor looks great and protective, and from an in-universe perspective there's probably a good reason to emphasize their femininity, in a 'hey we're not MEN-at-arms' sense.

I think I'd feel more the way you do if they were all dressed like wyches, or the sort of fantasy cheescake where most of their skin is showing, but they seem to be fully covered by armor or robes.

Boob plate I'm kinda mixed on. Have you seen those plastic conversions form Dreamforge some people do? They're nice, vaguely feminine power armor suits that have tabards and shit, but have pretty normal looking chest plates.
On the one hand, I like the "No Men under arms" thing and the idea that the Sisters heavily emphasize that, and I won't deny that some artists can make boob plate look cool and less like something purely for jerking off to. Other hand, there's also a lot of skull-nipple armor bras around too.

I pray to Rogal Dorn all the time. Whenever I want to stop my workout, I pray to him for strength and guidance in my time of weakness.

When I want to stop my morning swim, I cast my thoughts to his glory, and put even more effort in.

Through great effort, we can transform ourselves into something better. I will never be as glorious as the post-human astartes, but I can and will be at my peak physical condition to best serve the Emperor of Mankind, however that may be.

Come at me scrublord I'm WARPED.jpg

I enjoy it because it's just so fucking big and full of itself, it's this massive entity that just has so much to offer. Somedays, I like joking around with how silly everything is, so I pull out my Orks and make it rain dice. Others, I want to watch my opponent get frustrated at my soldiers refusing to die, so I pull out Necrons.

As a technician who works with computers everyday, I appreciate the AdMech thinking people don't deserve technology when they see how the world treats it. As a big 'Humanity, Fuck yeah" enthusiast, I dig the 'rage against the dying of the light' that the Imperium stands for, and the refusal to bow to forces that embody the most evil of acts.

I love watching a dying species of space elves talk about how much they fucked up, but still fighting for one more day, and encompassing everything from court jesters to Egyptians to samurai. I like the little blue cowmen who think they have even an inkling of an idea of how the world works as they ride around in enormous mecha suits and make space-stalin blush with their communism.

I like genetically engineered soldiers who exist only to fight for their race, knowing full well their very existence is designed around, and built for war.
I like psychics who are a bigger threat to the galaxy than the planet-size spaceships they ride around it.
I LOVE that there's a space hell, created from humans rather than just another boring warpspace that's blue and makeshipgofastvrooooom

I just love everything the universe has to offer, all the literature, all the images, all the models. The community that debates what anything means, or if something even exists anymore, the self-awareness of it's enthusiasts that discuss pointless things for hours just to throw around thought experiments.

I don't love warhammer 40k.
I ADORE the warhammer 40k experience.
