I don't even have that big of a to-do list and it seems daunting/taking forever. Been waiting forever on some Zandri dust air spray as well as an airbrush so I just have a wyvern, a chimera and a stormsword just sitting there unfinished. I also have some Flash gitz I haven't even primed yet.

Not a fan of the white shoulder trim. I think it breaks up the colours too much. Other than that it looks great, really mirin especially the non-metallic gold on the chestpiece

lads, whats the difference between basecoat > wash > layers

and
basecoat >layers > wash

My current process for my world eaters is a mephiston red basecoat > agrax earthshade wash >mephiston red > mephiston red/blood red 50/50 > blood red > orange highlights

Would I benefit from moving the wash to the last step?

>is there any paint they might sell i can use as brush on primer?

Acyrlic gesso can be used on miniatures
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Priming_With_Acrylic_Gesso

>is there any particular difference between their crylic paints and vallejo and gw paints?

Yes, acrylics designed for miniatures have more, finer pigment than most artists acrylics.
Buy miniatures acrylics.
>>
>>47352071
washing last is obviously going to "corrupt" your highlights, but it gives somewhat of a more united look to the model. I think people usually people leave the last highlights for after the wash so they can touch up.Maybe you could try making some highlights washing and then making the last ones.
>>
>>47352071

Take two miniatures and try one method on one and the other on the other.

Broadly, dependent on how you wash, you might get a darker final result if you wash last, and the colour on flat surfaces might not be as uniform.

Yes, you're looking for Acrylic Gesso, I've seen it in Black, Gray and White. Liquitex is a good brand, but even generic ones work as well.

It's really cheap and will last you a lot, I haven't had to buy any for over 60 models, and the bottle (About 2 oz) still has about 3/4.

Gesso really starts to shine when working in sub-assemblies, as any spot of it you accidentally remove or need to repaint can just be covered without having to lose the rest of the paintjob.

It also can be used in pretty much any weather, although compared to spray primer it can take a bit longer to dry.

Speaking of drying, gesso shrinks whilst doing so, making it very hard to obscure detail even with a sloppy coat, experiment a bit and find the ideal amount of thinning on your gesso so it is not too thick but still thin enough to dry in a reasonable tine.

It doesn't take much experimentation to find the consistency you prefer to work with.

Now, for your question on art store acrylics.

Most artists' acrylics aren't formulated for going too thin, so their pigment and medium is somewhat thicker, as they are intended for opacity as opposed to miniature detail.

You could technically use art store paints for minis, I have used them before, but it takes a lot of thinning and fuckery to get them in shape.

The colours may be a problem, as most hues are intended to be mixed by the artist, so if you want consistent colours , that may be a problem

Then there's the stuff that just like everything, the better stuff is usually expensive. Dollar store acrylics may be cheap, but their pigments are of horrible quality and generally not good even for canvas painting.

In my experience as a canvas painter, I'd rather use Vallejo or Gw paints for minis, as it's less fiddly, and good acrylics come almost twice as expensive as most hobby paints.

I'm not saying that you can't paint with other acrylics, but imho, I'd rather spend my time working on my backlog than making my paints workable.

So I realized my color palette is shit. Nearly 50% of it are metallics, washes and technical shit, and some paints for airbrush and pigments.

Most of the other 50% are old as fuck citadel paints and most of them are either browns and greys with lots of them that look nearly the same. Others are simply dead of old age. Lots of ugly greens too.

I think it's time to get a proper paint set. I need a more colorful base palette. Ideally some range that I can use both for regular brush and airbrush alike.

>>47357345
I really like Skitarii and Kabalite models, but there's no way I'm fitting them into my Raven Guard army

>>47359275
For my RG I use individuality and ornamentation to denote ranks, so my sternguard are converted tacticals that look much more battle worn and their gear looks more personally customized.
RG is a stealthy tacticool army with tribalistic origins, go for more of that and less bling spehss monks
Think of vietnam rookies vs veterans in most media, the veterans carry trophies, decoration, they have modified their equipment to better work on the field.
Uniqueness is also a factor in making nicely looking high ranked troops. Maybe a different colored gauntlet or part of the helmet, kill marks on their guns, some freehand here and there, warpaint on bare heads, etc.

>>
>>47366731
i mainly started it because the game will be discontinued. it has gotten so big that the mainsteam is gonna play it, like monopoly. and mainstream people dislike simple wooden figure. they want shiny tiles and shiny plastic mini's

basically this means they will make a second edition for normies and slowly redo all current expansions in the coming 8 years. so no new stuff will be coming out for this again. thus i could make a box to fit everything.

except some 50 dollaro expansions of 3 tiles i wont chase.

i myself still need to buy 2 big expansions and i got a shipment of more mini expansions coming in. so all in all i will have it full in a month or so if i can find a few more mini expansions and buy the 2 big expansions.

I am going to get started on my first resin miniatures ever. I know that I need to wash them in soapy warm water, but since i am not the best painter, if I need to strip them, can I use alcohol? Acetone? Simple green is not possible since I am a eurofag.
>>
>>47367192

Biostrip 20 is the hot new "safe" stripper over here.

Not sure about it on resin though, I personally can vouch for Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner for 20 minutes.

This is the problem I find with stripping advice, too many different opinions and options in different countries.
>>
>>47367192
Don't use a heavy duty solvent. I would reckon that acetone would stright up eat your resin. If you can get your hands on a cheap Ultrasonic cleaner, some warm water and some dish soap will do grandly. I don't know how things are for automotives across the pond, but if you can get yourself some cheap biodegradable Degreaser, that also does the trick. I would suggest superclean but i don't know if they have that over there.

Kind of new: I have trouble finding moldlines before I paint over them (thus making them super obvious). Is there a technique for finding the moldlines on a model? Like the areas you should always check for them?
>>
>>47368852
I'm making mine orange-red desert, to match the Necron starting area in Soulstorm.
>>
Just follow the mold line. I take a piece of sand paper and lightly rub it across the model to essentially highlight the mild lines make them easier to see. Worst case scenario, if you see one after prining, just remove it with your hobby knife and and cover the bar spot with a paint on primer. You're going to seal the model anyways, so it's not a huge deal.

Should you only edge-highlight? In all the painting guides for SMs they just apply the basecoat, wash the edges/recesses and then edge/line highlight it, rather than apply an area highlight. Most of the area highlighting I see looks completely shit, unfeathered, etc. Games Workshop storefront models like pic related don't have anything but what I typed above

If you area highlight, how do you are highlight effectively?

Aye, it was bizarre. When I first started stripping them I wondered why on some minis the black primer seemded to go very grey after soaking in soap for a few days. After I gave them a good scrub I found a second layer of white primer under the black one. Now why the fuck would anyone do that?

Also on some of the chaos warriors the previous owner apparently wasn't too happy with his first attempt of painting so the dude just slapped some black on top and painted again... So the best ones had like 5-6 layers of thick paint on them. I wish I could share some pics but am not home atm.

do you also have the armorcast one?

it has bolts to attach/detach the weapons. i just got it yesterday so pic is a dry fit. i'm not sure how i'm going to build it yet (paintwise i'm thinking biel tan or ulthwe) but you can opt not to glue the wings and the heads or magnatize them. that way you can transport it in pieces

So, I'm not getting any replies in other threads, might as well ask as it's tangentially related, as I want to make a ghoul army in a "knightly delusion" fashion, as they themselves believe they are such. What kind of men-at-arms would fit well for ghouls? I was thinking Fireforge or MOM but FF might be more conversion friendly. I was thinking of using ghoul bits and weapons to kind of make a fading illusion-style, so I need some models for the bigger beasts, like crypt horrors and varghulfs. I was thinking maybe using converted Stormcast for the ogre-size guys, and pic related for a varghulf hero, what do you think, can it work?

Always area highlight, always feather.

You can see even in that GW pic they have done some feathering before the final hard edge highlight.

Dealing with that myself at the moment.
Bucket of orks guy from above. Some of them look almost melted with how thick the paint is. I'm finding a treasure trove of different colours.
I suspect multiple lazy owners.

>Now why the fuck would anyone do that?
As a kid I got some of the 2nd ed khorne beserkers off a friend. Many were primed white and a few were base coated red. I primed black over the top figuring what's the harm. I know better now. But I assume it is either someone who doesn't know better or just doesn't care.

I'll keep an eye out. Hopefully it's available here.
Going with the tried and true dettol at the moment. Blasting the paint off everything but the 20 year old gorka morka stuff. I suspect they were done with enamel.

Metals are in some turps.

Yeah, I got some perry WoTR, mercs and cav. I was thinking about using something else. Cav won't fit for me because they're not 'monstrous' enough. Though peg knights can work b/c of size, or maybe these as crypt flayers? Yours would look good in between fireforge footmen as unit champs though. Thanks anon!

You inspired me to do this with my Kingdom Death box, since the plastic tray it comes with is too short if you include the card dividers in the trays.

I've got the main tray done, but still need to plan out how I want to do the subsectioning. Hopefully I won't need nearly as much hotglue gunning for the inner walls as I did for the main frame.

Welcome to the good life brother. Models considered irredeemable and subject to the emperors eternal peace are given a second chance to serve.

My most recent project with the thing is cleaning up some horrible Inccubi I scored off the Bay for about half price.

Some shmub painted them up to look like clowns. Truly a day to be alive when i look at atrocity like that and think 'yeah, I could use that'

What are you cleaning off?

Its all yours for a swell 30$ over at harbor freight or the equivalent.
You still need to scrub, but the results happen a hundred times faster, and its far more effective at getting the crevices and tiny areas.

Often times i throw in a bad model from Ebay and the whole thing will fall apart. As in, The connection points were all done with superglue and it literally disrupted the bonds and broke the thing apart for me. Its been a godsend for recouping Ebay trash.

Pic related was cleaned in just an hour using my hypersonic.

also, why didn't i attach my pic...

as i said it's a bit in a rough state, the left shoulder and leg took a battering. this was specified in the ad and when i went to collect it the seller even had a ziplock bag with the small chips/flakes of resin, so its perfectly fixable

also, it's remarkebly balanced, even with it's broken leg it stoud upright with the wings in place. but i think i will mak a base for it just to make sure it doesn't snap

building/painting it wiil be a nightmare though, i can already see hours and hours of sanding and filling to get it perfectly smooth, i also don't like painting large flat survices. awell it will be woth it when it's done, this was on my want list for ages

Finally gotten around to making my Chaos Knight.

But I'm stuck at what to do for the base, any quick tips to make a base that large more intresting?

Have plenty of bits and building leftovers but I dread they'll make him look smaller if anything.
>>
>>47370618
Often the makers have you do it in cycles. Mine is a generic jewlry cleaner, and it makes you press the button every three minutes or so. But thats not really that bad. Sitting around painting or gaming or whatever else you do, just hitting it whenever it turns off and doing cycles of it over and over gets the job done.
Once the thing has ran a couple of times, you will see results much faster than just letting them soak. And yes, the longer you cycle them the cleaner they get. I often find that the cleaning mix gets so gunked up that i clean out the entire rig and scrub off what i can, only to toss them back in for another round.

Pic related looks all jacked like the primer is still gunked, but its whispy thin/discolored the plastic. With a fresh prime coat on it i bet no one could even tell it was refurbished.

I use simple green, but if your A REAL MAN you get yourself down to autozone and get a gallon of SUPERCLEAN.

The one i have is big enough to house a venom, it could probably fit about 30 or 40 mini's at max compacity, and a whole lot of loose bits.
There are other brands out there, and i bet you could find larger.

Aye, I have the armorcast too, but the head and wings aren't that much of an issue.
I was considering magnetizing the legs and torso, but the sheer weight of the resin is massive...
You could try fixing the feets to the base, drill a hole under them and have a metal rod in each leg to slide in to stabilize the legs, but the upper body is still a problem...

First things first.

What you are probably refering to as "washes" are actually "glazes". i.e. changing the color hue of a whole area. This is how GW calls them, they call "washes" to their glazes. Their "glazes" are pretty much the same as their "washes", no real difference actually. Even more retarded, they don't actually use their glazes/washes to glaze/wash. They use them to DIP the model by brush. i.e. putting the stuff fucking everywhere on the model, both into recesses and on raised areas.

Lahmian medium is glaze medium, so for what you want it should be perfect providing you get the correct ratios for each color and that what you actually want is to glaze, and not dipping like GW does with their washes.

An actual "wash" as modelers outside GW's little bubble have always known them is thinned down paint that is put in a controlled fashion into the recesses of the model to shade it and outline it, without changing the hue of the whole area like GW says to do.

If what you want is to make some custom "true" washes you can use plain water.

Watch the section about washes in this vid to get what I'm trying to say, 14:28. Actually I would recomend everyone to watch this vid entirely, it teaches so many useful techniques.

Do they work with plastic and resin or do they get too hot?
>>
>>47371414
Thanks anon, that's a great video. What I want is a 'true' wash, yeah, so I'll give it a test run with water. Thanks for the advice!
>>
>>47369500

Highlight the way you want, there are no hard and fast rules beyond the guidelines of how light behaves in the real world.

GW's "Peaks and valleys" style is just an approximation of glossy surfaces in strong ambient light, recesses go dark because there are less ways for light to get in, while edges get bright because they have more possible angles for light to hit them from.

If you want some great demonstrations of more realistic highlights, look up painting buddha

What methods should I look into to paint black power armor? Pretty new to painting models, but I'd rather learn harder stuff than just spray black, dry brush grays and then paint whites or something.
>>
>>47371611
My old house mate had one for his air brush. It would get scalding hot after a few cycles. Just wondering if his was crazy or if that's normal.
>>
>>47371627
An easy way to make black look better than just gray highlights is to go for a slight blue tint to it instead, kind of just looks darker for some reason.

I paint my models a very dark grey and then use black wash to achieve a black with lots of depth, then I stipple battle damage with metallics and finally use weathering powders to add a bit of depth and subtle highlighting.

Another trick with black is adding details in other colours as to make the focal point something other than the armor.
