One thing that you pick up on if you read the lore articles: the setting recognizes the fact that neowalkers are kind of shit. Every planeswalker we meet that used to be an oldswalker is always orders of magnitude more of a threat than any of the neowalkers.
They are nowhere near as strong as they were pre-mending, but the simple fact that they once wielded godlike power and fought against other such gods means they have experience that is hard to match. Liliana is probably the weakest former-Oldswalker we have seen onscreen since the mending, since she is 'only' 150 years old, and she has the goddamn chain veil that lets her punch well above her weight.
Ob Nixilis slapped the shit out of 3 neowalkers in rapid succession, only being beaten back when four of them teamed up to ruin his shit at once with coordinated attacks that left him no choice but to remain on the defensive until he was finally overwhelmed and forced to retreat.
Sorin barely considers Jace and Tamiyo as more than furniture. He politely offers Avacyn the opportunity to finish murdering the fuck out of them before they have their conversation.
Even Nahiri is an insanely dangerous individual now, and the last time Sorin saw her she was basically just a baby planeswalker.
And so on and so forth.
Its a safe bet that you need the entire Gatewatch to realistically have a chance against a former oldswalker.

It's not about the moon though, the Eldritch Moon is just a name. A moon is a name given to anything that is in orbit around a planet, they call it a moon because it's the closest kind of object they know of that they can compare it to when it's actually something massive trying to enter the plane.

That gets me thinking: does Innistrad have an actual moon? Let me explain.
For what we know planes come in different shapes and sizes: some are planets like the earth, some stretch infinitely and so on. We also know that some have actual celestial object from cards like crucible of worlds, but we don't know if Ravnica has such a thing like space, and this goes for Innistrad too. So to rephrase my initial question: is Innistrad's moon an actual celestial object or is some kind of mana fuckery that happens to resemble a moon?
Don't forget avacyn has always been tied to the moon, and there's something fucking massive buried under the heron mark on the moon.
Heron has not only mentioned in cards but recent story as well.

He was pretty fucking adamant about not allowing lilianas mind to be probed even though she seemed to have no idea what he was talking about. Lils suspects him of being a planeswalker as she has encountered him on multiple planes, and even Jace saw him, but while only being tainted with the madness of the plane.
Nahari would have been easily manipulated into seeking vengeance on sorin. I'd imagine literally everything going on is the handiwork of the raven man, which some speculate to be yawgmoth.

Because insane Jace didn't seem to be in the mood to leave an intact mind behind. That was basically the only time Jace has gone all out in a mental invasion, and it's very possible that Liliana wasn't going to come out of it sane.
If he considers Liliana a project, something to be worked on and carried forward into the future, having her get mentally obliterated by an insane telepath seeking secrets that aren't there is a pretty big problem.

Many parts seemed tragic for the sake of it, in many ways it felt more like I was reading 40k lore. I know it's Innistrad but still, even the original Innistrad block had distant hope, this is just everything is 100% screwed and the ending was everything is now 110% screwed with an Eldrazi thrown in for good measure. I can't bring myself to be engaged because any resolution has to be convoluted and stupid to overcome the hurdle of Avacyn being dead.

You have to remember that Avacyn was, from Sorin's point of view, originally created to protect the human population of Innistrad from the vampires and other threats so that the vampires didn't eat themselves into extinction like bloodthirsty retards.
Sorin recently made an alliance with Olivia, and implied other vampire lords as well, to gather an army to take down Nahiri.
I suspect what is going to happen is that, during eldritch moon, the vampires are going to get BTFO. The Markov clan is already gone. If the Volderans and others get rocked by Nahiri's lithomancy during Eldritch Moon, there might be so few vampires left that the fact that humanit is lacking a superangel protector is no longer a death sentence.

Falkenreath got seriously fucked up by Avacyn during SOI too. That could certainly be a possibility but all this adds up to weakening all the things that makes Innistrad a popular plane. The entire plane is built around the Church of Avacyn and their dependency on it with many different tribes that have collective synergy. I mean it's their prerogative but all this shit just adds up to further loss of sales as has been going on for a while.

Just what happened to her during SOI was tragedy enough for one set, if she had to live with those actions and redeem herself that could have led to some good character development and maybe some cool card art like Avacyn clashing with Emrakul. But no, WotC just seem to want to sink MTG faster than it's already going with every decision they make. Because their writers can't handle something more powerful than a new-walker so the only thing that they can come up with is killing everything that would require more writing work tha the bare minimum. Because of this I fully expect Sorin and Nahiri to die with whatever the eldritch Moon is and the fucking Gitrog monster to be the only threat to the inhabitants of the plane after the end of the next set.
