On one hand, permanent gimps are often overly harsh punishments given for flimsy/unexpected reasons, on the other it sounds like you did something stupid and are dealing with the consequences in an immature way.

Needs more context to make any judgements based on anything but speculation.

Talking about vaporwave on FB chat w/ another player.

Stat loss. I know I'm not getting those number back since he's that sort of DM.
>>
>>47326036
So... your DM nuked you're characters stats because you talked about music on FaceBook. Yeah... he's a douche.
>>
>>47326036
You have bad tastes maybe, but that DM doesn't seem very fun to play with if he is going to punish you in game for your bad tastes
>>
>>47326036
DM is a cunt for gimping you in game for talking about shitty meme music.
>>
It happened to me too. Context : A while ago there was a running joke in the French speaking roleplaying scene based on a youtube video.

It was a comedy where a guy played a lvl 1 rogue with his friends who played lvl 54 and 67 paladin and wizard. During the night, he trolls them by raping the paladin asshole.

So we were playing a random campaign and our characters settle for the night. We agree to have people in guard duty, rotating over the course of the night. I just say a line from the video as a joke, the DM tells everyone that I assrape someone.

I just lost all investment in my character and in the game at this point.

The DM. If you are going to be a DM you have to remain neutral when it comes to the game. The only reason to single out an individual player would be for story purposes,

>>47326565
It is not uncommon for DMs to develop god complexes and other players that feel they benefit fro playing in to the DMs complex to support them even when they know it is wrong. It kinda goes along with the "at least its not me" and the "if is support him it will be me" attitude.

I know shitty people so I can easily believe the shitty DM part. >>
>>47330466
Depends if he was even in the area at the time. If they split up in a town/city then theres no need to be attentive as your character is not there if it is not your turn. Group A could be out scouting security or some shit which could take maybe thirty minutes or more depending how in-depth they attempt to be or are told to be. Why should you be "100% attentive" when your character is not even supposed to know what is going on?

In battle or group conversations when everyones character is present then yeah, don't be a dick on facebook and pay attention god dammit, but if not then who cares what someone else is doing while they wait for the time to pass back to them?

As a GM nothing is more annoying than players chatting off topic on social media then asking if its their turn yet

Music chat is among the worst because then you get LMAO LET ME SHOW YOU THIS EPIC VIDEO

The closest I have come to kicking a player was when he took my having some ambient music appropriate to the scene as justification to play Dragonforce/Nightwish/the John Cena theme etc to "make the game EPIC"

Level drain isn't really a fair punishment but I am at least a little sympathetic to.the DM having been there before、

I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in /tg/, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Quest Threads, and I have over 300 confirmed TPKs. I am trained in GURPS and I’m the top DM in the entire roll20 forums. You are nothing to me but just another PC. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on Middle Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my personal army on /b/ and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your character. You’re fucking stat-lossed, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, as long as Mom will let me borrow the car, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with Grimtooth's Traps. Not only am I extensively trained in rolling dice so they get the results I want, but I have access to the entire arsenal of 3.5 supplements, and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of this specific thread, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “vaporwave” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit passive aggression all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking drained, kitsune.

I've seen it happen. DMs are in short supply, so people cater to them. Then op gets fucked with, and they keep quiet. Then OP walks, and suddenly they care because they don't want their game to fall apart.

OP was right to quit. The GM is always right, but only for as long as his game is more fun than the next best alternative.

It's not worse than holding up the session with OOC conversation.

There are only so many ways to enforce discipline in online games, some times you have to outdick the disruptive player. In-character penalties and kicking someone out of the group is basically the only real ways of disciplining someone.
>>
>>47335425

Not him, but unfortunately for you, to "define" something as vague as an artistic genre is actually really, really hard. Defining something as a "good," as in, valuable, example of that genre is even harder. It's arguably impossible.

One means by which a thing can be "defined," however, consists of establishing parameters that are generally true of a thing: for example, a sandwich is generally some meat and cheese in between two slices of bread. There are sandwiches that are inarguably sandwiches (like, say, if you have meat and cheese between pitas or something) that avoid this definition, so it's not something to take too literally. You'll just get confused.

Another means of defining something in terms of parameters is to give examples of it. "Zombie" is a word that's difficult to define because in each of its occurrences, it can have wildly different properties: in a certain conception of a zombie, one must destroy the brain. In others, the "zombie" is merely an animated corpse that has limited regeneration capabilities. In others, a "zombie" is not necessarily dead at all, but an entranced or mindless living person. However, we can still substantively define "zombie" by therefore giving examples of each: the zombies from Hall of the Living Dead, Dungeons & Dragons zombies, and the real-world origin of the word are all versions of what can constitute a "zombie" that align, respectfully, with the descriptions I've just given.

It is possible to "define" something, even vague somethings, by giving examples, so it is legitimate and reasonable to respond to a request to "define" what makes "good vaporwave" by giving examples of bands that the answerer thinks of as good examples of "good vaporwave."

Faggot.

There is always a divide between IC and OOC. Crossing that divide - taking IC conflicts or results as personal offense, or using the game to take out OOC disagreements or frustrations - is a cardinal sin.

Tabletop games do not work without this divide. The GM is rightfully expected, and demanded, to be impartial and fair. Maybe not always nice, nor easy, but always impartial.

You're absolutely in the right OP. Zero tolerance.

>>47326565

This might be the most /tg/ post I've read all week.

You win this one good sir.
>>
>>47336124
I feel as though examples are a useful and indeed necessary part of a definition, but not exactly sufficient without also some kind of brief explanation.

Vaporwave (also vapourwave)[3] is a genre of music that emerged in the early 2010s among Internet communities. It is characterized by a nostalgic fascination with retro cultural aesthetics (typically of the 1980s, 1990s, and early-mid 2000s), video games, technology, post-modern Japanese culture and advertising, and styles of commercial and popular music such as lounge, smooth jazz and elevator music. Musical sampling is prevalent within the genre, with samples often pitched, layered or altered in classic chopped and screwed style.[2][4] Central to the style is often a critical or satirical preoccupation with consumer capitalism, popular culture, and new-age tropes.[2]

Couple this with some examples of widely agreed upon examples of the genre and you have a perfectly fine functional definition.

>not having friends who are mature enough to keep their phones in their pockets during the game unless it's an emergency, or excuse themselves if it is
>not having one 15-minute bathroom/phone/snack-prep break in the middle of your game session

Synthwave is just another permutation of vaporwave, and is covered under the umbrella definition/clasification of vaporwave
this is good synthwave tho
>>

Are you sure it's about those tastes in music, or was it because you were on your fucking cellphone/laptop during the game?

One of these things will make me far more sympathetic.

>synthwave is the same genre as slowing down a Diana Ross song and adding sound effects
I don't give a fuck if you don't think that's representative of vaporwave, it's the song most people think of when they look at the genre and it's shit
also all those postmodern ironic hipsters going on about how it's totally a satire of late 80s consumerist culture can eat a dick too, the very fact it's not filled with bearded faggots trying to make a statement makes synthwave a superior genre
>>
>>47353708
Yeah, but Synthwave also has cyberpunk hipsters who completely miss the point of the genre and just think that it's Hotline Miami with chrome strapped on.

In fact, /v/tards is normally what I think of when I think of synthwave.

I have never seen any of these people.
And to be fair, if you believe most CP2020 players that pretty much is close to how their experience of cyberpunk went.
>>
>>47326676
Wasn't he talking about vaporwave on facebook? How is that disrupting the game?
>>

If you believe >>47329207, they were blasting it in-game.

From what I've read, you didn't want to be there anyway. So everyone wins.

You don't have to play in a game you don't like.

And that DM doesn't have to have you as a player.

Except that it happened in the 90's when it was ok to be inspired by the media coming out then. Not like today.

Those cyberpunk hipsters, you know.

It can't even be that. He's not the DM, he's not running the game. The enjoyment of everybody else should not hinge on one player.
