So what exactly are the "angels" that show up in the Lothric Castle lore? Are they Primordial Serpents? Are they Pilgrim Butterflies? Neither of those fits with the feathery wings the golden winged knights have, or with the feathers scattered all over Gertrude's (?) cage. I feel like I missed a crucial piece of information.

They're probably something we haven't seen yet. Possibly the focus of one of the DLCs.

They might be something related to the Dark because the closest things to feathery angels we have actually seen in the series are Darklurker and Sulyvahn (his second form has angel wings).

>>
>>47285093
Probably Frampt. "I'm an angel, appearing in this fleshy form to communicate with you" or some bullshit. Kaathe explicitly leads the Sable Church, and Frampt is the Kingseeker, the one after a rightful ruler to link the fire. Makes sense that he'd try to sell himself as some kind of divine messenger to increase the chance of his manipulations working, since Kaathe obviously did the same for the hollows. Says that they were largely viewed as heretical and rejected by the king's Three Pillars (the High Priestess, the Knights, and the Scholar).
And yeah, it's Gertrude's cage.
http://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Winged+Knight+Helm
>Worship of the divine messengers was viewed as heresy in Lothric and unrecognized by any of the Three Pillars of rule.
>This is believed to be why Gertrude, the Heavenly Daughter, was imprisoned in the lofty cell of the Grand Archives.
Maybe she sprouted wings herself, or always had them and is why she's called Heavenly Daughter?
Either way, too many holes, too much guesswork.

Winged Knights look so cool. It's a shame you gotta dump so much VIT to wear their armor.
>>
>>47285390
I wish they'd just kept equip load as part of endurance. As it is, vitality is essentially just the vanity stat, and wasted levels on someone aiming for one of the contending meta levels.
>>
>>47285416
Yeah, if armor is nearly worthless in regards to damage mitigation as it is, either turn poise back on for heavy armor, or do what you suggested.

I feel sorry for Smough cosplayers. They can't even equip a matching shield to offset the fact they are stuck with fatrolling without putting crippling amounts of levels into VIT.
>>
>>47285416
Vitality isn't helped by the fact that Poise is close to useless so heavy Armour feels like a total waste of time.
>>
>>47285346
It's unlikely to be Frampt because Frampt is pro-Fire, just like the Lothric Royal Family, so I don't see why the Angelic faith would be heretical if he was the one in charge.
>>
>>47285501
Didn't the Elevens not care about poise because they nostalgia hard over DeS?
>>
>>47285509
Yeah, admittedly that's a big point I wasn't able to reconcile. Could be a third, as-yet-unheard-of serpent? I'm also not sure why, if they're heretical, there are statues of them around the castle.
>>
>>47285542
The Scholars of the Archives were referred to as heretical despite being part of the Three Pillars of Lothric, if I recall.
>>
Welp, about 30 minutes left until the kickstarter ends.

Hope they release a early look into the rules soon. I am hyped as fuck.
>>
>>47285524
>the Elevens
Literally who?
>>
>>47285542
>I'm also not sure why, if they're heretical, there are statues of them around the castle.
This is why I'm really against the idea that the angels are the primordial serpents - why would the Three Pillars allow the statues of a heretical faith to be put up in the castle? Yes, the primordial serpent statues have little feathery wings, but there's also gargoyles with feathered wings too - much bigger, more noticeable ones. I think the winged statues are just decoration. If the primordial serpent ones do have lore connotations then my own fan wank is that they're statues of Frampt, who came to Lothric's royal family a long time ago and is the reason they're so obsessed with linking the flame.

>Oceiros went mad trying to harness his royal blood for a greater purpose, leading him to the heretics of the Grand Archives, where he discovered the twisted worship of Seath the paledrake.
I assume it refers to scholars who wield the Heretic's Staff.
http://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Heretic's+Staff
>Sorcery is a logical academic discipline, and the power of sorceries depends heavily on the caster's intelligence.
So maybe not ALL the scholars of the archive, but certainly some of them. Maybe a group who found some of Seath's research and sorceries among the thousands of books there and were rejected by the other scholars for following the crystals?

>>47285629
>Frampt, who came to Lothric's royal family a long time ago and is the reason they're so obsessed with linking the flame.
That's my thinking too, and if you abandon the idea that Frampt is the angel, then it does fit. Plus, all the references specifically say angels, plural, so it's multiple beings.

Kalameet's a really cool looking model too. Have they said yet if the final miniatures are going to be color, or just sticking with grey?

>>47285725
Could be either imo. I mean they're statues, and serpents obviously don't actually wear clothes, so I think for the sake of imagery it's more likely that they're being represented WITH wings, rather than just wearing wings.

VIT itself gives you defense.

>>
>>47287089
At 120 40 VIT is basically standard, and using more than starting VIT is always recommended.
>>
>>47287089
I'm actually just checking this out now, most of the stats will add some defenses, but not nearly as much as Vit, which adds a couple of points each level.
>>
>>47287145
Base defence is 50. Going to 40 VIT gets you up to 67. You get to 87 just for wearing the lightest armor in the game. 116 for both. Seems like you'd get way more investing those points in other stats.
>>
>>47287145
Are you mixing vigor and vitality up? 40 vitality seems like a waste to me.
>>
Rolled 252 (1d1000)

>>47287342
That's because you get a defense penalty for not wearing any armor. 67 is what you get after the penalty is added.

What? With a fairly generic Quality build you're at SL 108 as Knight (IIRC) once you've got your 27 Vig, 40 End / Dex / Str.

Given the choice between 27 Endurance + 40 Vitality vs 40 Endurance and 27 Vitality I feel like I'd go for the Endurance every time.
>>
>>47287966
People have gotten him to everywhere he can go (certain types of rooms block him out, like boss rooms), and nothing happens. Even down with the fire crabs (he takes almost zero fall damage for some reason, so some people thought that might be deliberate so you can get him down there), nothing happens.

>>
>>47288305
I only covered myself because last time I bought it up with someone they responded with "Fuck off, they come from the hollows turning into trees, retard." on the basis that the wings look kind of like branches.
Which reminds me, I've been wondering if Sulyvhan is related to the pilgrims at all. He also sprouts wings, which every much resemble those of a pilgrim butterfly, and once he does it unlocks his bonus magic abilities, again much like with pilgrim butterflies. I could believe that he's of the same race, but went a different path.
And if you take the Deep and the Abyss to be fundamentally the same thing, or at least strongly related, it'd also make sense for why he was drawn to it as a source for his power via the Church of the Deep, which is theorized to have been twisted and bastardized BY Sulyvhan to seek out and draw from the Deep, whereas before when Aldrich wasn't contained, pacified sludge and actively leading them he was very much against the Deep and sought to survive it rather than harness it.

That's what kinda bugs me about the lore in the games outside 1 and Demon's, those two gave very clear explanations for core shit with lots of room for questions and speculating AROUND them, but so much in 2 and 3 just feels so nebulous.

>>
>>47289427
Yeah, it fits so perfectly that I'm quite happy to accept it as a fan-canon, otherwise all that time spent explaining that Solaire's gear is nothing special seems pretty pointless.

On the topic of fan-canon, if the Sunset Knight is some sort of farewell to Solaire it'd make me very happy.

Okay, so I started DS3 and haven't played the other games, and I'm sort of getting about 10% of the lore discussions I see around and things in the game don't make sense but I don't really care because it's fun. The discussion here is assuming a base level of knowledge I don't have and I'm still not getting much. Can anyone break it down for a beginner, or point me to something that does it for me?

It implies being a bad enough dude to get to the fire.

It's not about virtue or special circumstance it's, as Hawkwood says, about might.

>I thought any old schmuck of an undead with the skills could link the fire, but Hawkwood seems to imply that linking the fire seems to involve more than just sticking your hand in it

If your soul is too weak to feed the flame you simply become consumed by it without accomplishing much of anything.

Bonfires for instance are powered and kindled by the fresh bones of undead, so it would be more accurate to think that "Any old schmuck of an undead can be used to make a bonfire."

The game literally shows you non-diagetically that it happened. If you say the Age of Dragons didn't happen you might as well scrap all item descriptions and placement implications and say Picard interfering with the proto-Vulcans from TNG 3x04 "Who Watches the Watchers" caused them to develop a biomechanical world-matrix similar to magic and souls spread around by repurposed Borg nanotech and Frampt and Kaathe are Klingons in disguise.
>>

To be fair, the only thing I would say Frampt flat out lies to you about is that linking the flame will end the undead curse, and even that I could chalk up to it simply being that he might not know better.

Otherwise...Frampt is pretty upfront. "Go here, kill these people, don't worry, they're either insane or have served their purpose.", he doesn't even try and bullshit a reason to kill Nito, just says that he's got no use left living.

>>
>>47298243
No. I just don't think there was this much thought behind what they did to Poise. More likely, their Sales dept told them that people wanted more Bloodborne, so they made the game more like Bloodborne (faster combat, no Poise, stagger everything, screaming enemies with 10+ hit combos that chase you across half the map) because that's what sells. Not because Miyazaki had some brilliant vision.

Bumping with a question:

Mechanics aside, like, forget what is best for pvp and what scales best to get the biggest numbers with the most efficient stat spread, what's your favorite weapon class and then weapon in it in 3?

I'm super torn between spears with the Lothric Knight Long Spear and curved swords with the Carthus Curved Sword.
>>
>>47299965
Swordspear and Astora Greatsword. I know they're both on the powerful end of the spectrum, especially with the AGSs rolling R1 + Leo Ring but I'd like them even if they weren't that. Take away the lightning blast from the swordspear and nerf the AGS and I'd still like them, former for the variety in moveset, latter for being the lightest UGS.
>>
>>47299965

My buddy dropped me the Gargoyle Spear when I was at High Wall and I have been using it ever since
>>
>>47297157
Poise literally does nothing. It is not on. It has a value of zero. Any numbers displayed to you regarding poise are a lie.
Poise is about as in the game as the corpse bonfire mechanic that we were all so intrigued about.
>>
>>47299965
I actually use both those weapons in my setup, but the carthus curved sword is by far my favorite weapon in the game.
>>
>>47300158
I feel the same way about the Dark Sword. I was using it even before I knew about its strength in pvp.

But also the Executioner's Greatsword. It's a brutal looking, but not unwieldy, slab of metal that looks cool and is fun to swing.
>>
>>47299965
Straight swords, and the longsword. I'm just a classic fantasy guy, give me a knight with a sword and shield, and I'm happy.

Fuck caster supremacy, martial all the way.
>>
>>47300796
Dragonslayer spear for the looks and pontiff knight curved sword for the cool looking weapon art.
>>

Astora Greatsword, Zweihander, Hollowslayer Greatsword and Halberd. I love realistic looking Renaissance style weapons.
>>
Could Ludleth be the Chosen Undead?
>>
>>47302201
I mean, my interpretation is that all the Lords of Cinder are reincarnations of each other, the same soul repeating itself each cycle, which is why they all merge into one for the Soul of Cinder, so I'd argue yes in a way, but regardless of my theory, no in a literal sense. They've got no reason to come up with a whole new identity from a land never heard of by the Chosen Undead, and plus CU never saw or used a Transposing Kiln, while Ludleth is experienced with them.
>>
Could Ludleth be the Furtive Pygmy?
>>
>>47302616

>>
>>47302591

>>47303363
Mein Gott.

It all makes sense now.
>>
>>47300492
supposedly people finally figured out what poise does in its current configuation.

It reduces the amount of iframes you lose when someone 'hits' you while you're rolling.

So essentially nothing.
>>
>>47305081
You get reduced iFrames when your hit in general, apparently, and the Poise stat is literally just a percentage showing how many iFrames you lose. (That's why poise adds up weird when equipping multiple items - it's multiplicative rather than additive. Like Absorption.)

So if you git gud and never get hit it doesn't matter, and if you get stunlocked it doesn't matter either - the only time it matters is for "escape rolls", when you've already been hit once and you try to roll away from a second hit.
Losing iFrames on rolls also means that you lose distance, by the by, so rolling away to a safe distance can turn into rolling to an unsafe distance.

It doesn't do NOTHING, but it certainly works nothing like how Poise used to work. It's also arguable how useful it actually is. Very arguable, if all this discussion is any indication.

>>47303363
Yhorm threw away his poise-shield to two-hand fuckers in the face, though.
>>
Which one of the extended parry lefts should I use? The dagger is super stylish, but it's not a shield.

>>47305321

>>
>>47305701

I don't think so, it doesn't seem like FROM to give a customizable character a definitive look/name/sex. At the very least there's no precedent, and what we know of him doesn't match up with what we know of the Chosen Undead.

Isn't everything in DS baseless speculation anyway? I mean even the creator said that they purposefully leave holes in the lore to let people speculate.
I mean isn't that the whole point of this thread?
And as far as uncredited stolen content goes its still up in the air for me honestly. With good arguments on both sides, and that damn stupid program that checks for plagiarism is stupid and broken. Had a 90% plagiarism on a paper that I cited sources. I "apparently" didn't cite them correctly. And prof gave it a failing grade and gave me the option to rewrite it for the lowest passing grade.
