Welcome to the Accidental Magical Girl thread!

Various worlds and multiverses have become connected together via the mysterious Overcity, a sprawling landscape inhabited by monsters and magical beings. Girls and boys endowed with their new supernatural powers can work together solving conflicts that arise!

>This is NOT a greentext adventure style CYOA with one GM and thread posting to dictate the adventure, but rather a hub thread for multiple storycrafters to use. A majority of activity (including campaigns) instead happens in the IRC, which is open for newbies to join.
Characters can be rolled with either the CYOA's purple PDF which is intended as a writing prompt and is in the process of developing an independent auxiliary combat system, or AMGC's blue pdf which contains combat rules for PNP campaigns along with the rolls.

Post builds, roleplay, write stuff.

SCS v1.2.pdf

Introducing the MGCYOA Supplementary Combat System v1.2!

Created at roughly the same time as AMGC, the SCS allows players to easily take characters made in the CYOA v1.4 and use them in Quests and long-running campaigns alike.

This PDF covers the basics of magical girls and sets the groundwork for future updates (which will include Patrons, DMGs, and Monster Girls). Additionally, plans have already been made to update alongside the CYOA v1.5 update which will be coming soon.

>Mega link with the soon-to-come expansions to the SCS coming soon
>>
The SCS is proud to present its first major expansion!

The OC&FF Expansion includes information on the various Patrons that inhabit the multiverse, as well as rules regarding the Black Coin and Natural Monster Girls. Additionally, a small Bestiary is included, detailing some common foes for campaigns taking place in the Overcity. By popular request, Fusion has also been mechanically adapted for SCS use.

Be on the lookout for the GM's Guide, which will be ready when it's ready.

Doubles Tournament is now accepting applications! There's actually a bit of a story arc for this too.

Simple Rules:
>The events of the Tourney are to be considered Canon. So if your character is timelocked and unable to make it... You will have to forfeit your match.
I don't foresee this being a huge issue, but it could be if people go on a quest while waiting for their match.
>2v2 only.
This means it is 2 Girls (or boys) vs 2 other girls (or boys). Allies, Big Friends, and Thralls are not allowed.

>No Fusion.
I'm still on the fence about this one to be honest. Not everyone uses fusion, and it can be kinda OP. We'll see. If there's demand to allow it, I will consider it. It's a tentative ruling at this time.

>No Corrupting or Purifying your opponents.
If you have a Spell/Perk/Ability that purifies or corrupts, the Purification/Corruption effects are negated. All other mechanical benefits/uses work as they are intended.

>This is not to the death. If you would reach 0hp you will be saved by a TuxedoMask expy.
As part of this, if a perk or ability would activate upon death, it will not activate. If you are a MonG with Immortality perk, then you are allowed to go into negative hp, but if you would die then you will be saved and removed from the fight. Determination activates as normal as well.

>Matches are to be done in a timely fashion.
This means that you have ONE WEEK to have your match. The matches do not have to be done in the order in which the bracket lists them. But do not advance to the second round matches until all of the First round matches are complete, and so on. Failure to do so will result in the winner being decided by Out of Character discussion. If that goes nowhere, then it will be a coin flip. While not satisfactory, this is in effort to prevent it from taking too long.

Due to the nature of PvP and how Spells and Spell Trees are under constant revision, if you are uncertain of the fairness of a spell ask your opponents and reputable members.

Likewise, there are experimental "Feats" that I have heard about. I will not disallow them, instead I will leave that to the combatants to decide if they are allowed or not.

A proper sign up sheet will be available in the Linkboard and you can always ask for a link to it directly in the IRC.

I will also be drawing up a couple short story pieces as background for the Lore behind this. For anyone who is interested in it of course.

If that's the case, then the pdf archive should be updated. It currently doesn't contain Fusion and Puchuu, and the MonG perk pdf is out of date.

What magical girl powerset and weapon fits a character that has issues being open about things with others?
>>

Illusion with a focus on decoys (for dodging awkward situations). I'd probably choose a polearm; something you can use to keep people at a distance.
>>
>>47305689
Why not go with ranged so you never get close
>>
>>47305581
I'd probably say Psychic, Darkness, Illusion, and Water are all good choices for a specialization. They're generally the most subtle magic types.

For weapons, anything indirect or creating a sense of distance fits that theme. Most ranged weapons (either projectile or thrown), polearms, maybe a mystic weapon like a mirror, or even just a martial art focused on knocking opponents away would fit.
>>
>>4730662
Wanted to avoid a stereotypical "cold sniper" thing. Plus I felt it was to extreme; she has issues opening up, not issues being near to people at all. Just likes to keep a safe distance.

Also I have a personal preference for staffs/spears.

In order to sign up, you will first need a teammate. I would recommend hoping on the IRC and introduce your character! Make a few friends in character and see if anyone wants to team up with you. Link to it is in the linkhub for the titanpads.

My suggestion for your stats and everything is this: Make a pastebin account if you don't have one, and list everything there. That way, you can have all the relevant notes for your character, their abilities/perks/whatever listed as well as what they do. And so you can easily link to others so they don't have to dig through a list. It's also helpful for people without pictures of their characters as they can write up a detailed description as well as imputing their backstory info if they wish.

Of course, putting them in the googledocs helps too.

I made it into chapter 2, but nothing about it is really grabbing me. It's paint by numbers Magical Girl stuff with the only twist being she's in college?

A bunch of these panels were clearly put together from a film perspective - they'd work awesome as shots with sounds attached, but in practice, there's just an overabundance of written out sound effects for my taste. Also, there's something weird with the way this person draws people - I often can't tell at a glance whether a given person is meant to be male or female. It's not garbage, but it's not really special either.

First off - nice quads, Satan. And Bonus points for giving it a proper title. The story's really weird for me to read. It has normal prose sections but then the quasi-greentext bits read more like stage and camera directions, and instead of having the character's thoughts/voice over actually read as such, you've got them in parentheses. It feels less like an episode and more like a stage plan or the way you would cut the preview for an episode. Or maybe the first half or third of an episode. It does capture the 'feel' of a mahou series pretty well though.

Oh, and I think you meant 'piercing' blue eyes. I've never heard eyes described as impaling.

It was a good first stab for something rattled off in the moment. That said, this is probably going to sound a touch harsher, but mostly just because I'm on firmer ground on what to say with straight prose. We kinda need some description here. The protagonist is never described. She's a girl (or boy?) of indeterminate age (12?) or appearance, who fights a monster whose only defining features are a 'deadly mouth' and claws. Then, 'a light' appears in her hand, but we don't know what color or quality it has.

Related but not the same - there's a bit of a 'flat protagonist' thing going here. The second paragraph has a good bit about an uneasy feeling in her gut, but the entire third paragraph doesn't actually talk about her emotions or what she's feeling at various points at all. 'in the fear' comes up at the end of that paragraph, but everything else is just physical actions.

At 500 words, it's rather on the short side, but I think if you actually pad out the descriptions and add in more actual emotion markers and talk about how she's feeling and reacting to what goes on around her in her head - it'll fluff up quite nicely.

Both have been added to the archive.

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I was trying to rush towards an ending or resolution and I may have skipped over some neccessary description of the main character and her surroundings/actions in that process.
>She's a girl (or boy?) of indeterminate age (12?)
This was my fault. I meant to imply she was around 14 or so when I said she was a 2nd year in middle school.
But you are totally right, I have a really bad habit of not writing much about emotions and instead writing a lot about actions.
>>
What'd make sense for a story set at the start of the first day of the girl's freshman year in high school in terms of the mundane, slice of life side of things?
>>
>>47329463
Are you asking for highschool tropes?
>angst over new classmates/not getting classes with middle school friends
>juggling hw with monster fighting
>sneaking out at night
>school's first sports game interrupted by monsters
>THE [DANCE] IS TOMORROW

Just watch any cartoon set with supernaturally powered protags.
>>
>>47329463
Freshman year is scary as shit for a lot of people. For people that move around a lot you're trying desperately to not fuck up and make yourself out to be a huge ass. For people that have stayed in the same place a lot, you spend a lot of your time trying to carve out anything familiar (friends, teachers, routines) so that the entire experience doesn't feel alien.

When in doubt, it's not bad to refer to cliche. After all, it's usually cliche for a reason. The important part is not making everything cliche, but incorporating something that makes the character feel "real".

Walpurgisnacht is over! Ayako, Elena, Amelia, Kaylee, Kiri, Luna, Maeve, Lynne, Ceilia, Zhell, Rica, Sidney, Natsuki and Colette each receive a Uranium coin!

Uranium Coin:
One Use Only
A glowing green coin infused with the monster's green goop. Use in battle to replenish all resources, but take 1 wound at the end of every turn until you reach 0 HP; then you get K.O.'d.

Additionally, Colette receives one shota by the name of Hans Valderburg!

2nd year middle school could mean a lot of things depending on location - I assumed Japan from the names, and I tend to equate middle school with junior high school. Japanese junior high is grades 7,8, & 9 in the American system, so I figured she'd be 12-13.

Jesus, yeah, that's true. I was lucky enough to go to a school that was only three buildings, but any school of reasonable size is going to make you get lost. Some kids are also going to be coming from schools where they didn't need to wander the halls between classes and took their classes in a single room. Just the fact that they need to move rooms is going to throw them.

Some clubs have crossover with sports. Martial arts club as well as a judo/kendo/archery team. Riflery is a thing in the US that likely isn't in some countries, though at the high school level it's usually just air rifles.

Literary Magazine or Newspaper are also often things.

A TEAM of Magical Girls. That's what makes it even better.

True enough I guess.
Sleepless Domain really is on top of magical girling right now.
>>
>>47341730
Yeah, Sleepless Domain is a good middle ground. It's much further along and more meaty than Shattered Starlight, and has unique setting conceits and is more interest grabbing than Agents of the Realm. Speaking of Agents - it does start to get mildly interesting once they actually get around to the mechanics of how the powers work, but the art keeps throwing me and a lot of the exposition feels rushed or clashes with what I would expect from mythology, which is what it supposedly is.

Also, I didn't realize that SD was by the same guy who did that goofy Kiwi mecha webcomic.

I don't think there'd be a single "generic" Puuchu, since they're known for being weird and having thought processes alien to humans. I'd think there would be a variety of archetypes which you could have a generic one of.
>>
>>47344648
To be completely honest I don't like the concept of the "Puchuu" at all. I think they encourage people too much to make Madoka-inspired "dark" magical girls. (Which are a dime a dozen and rather tiresome.) Also, nowadays there are plenty of alternatives.

Generically, though, Puchuu are just representatives for a higher-order entity that grants the girls' powers. So ask yourself where your girls' powers come from, and that will decide what flavor your Puchuu is.
>>
>>47346525
Puchuu pdf is pretty great in that regard, since it doesn't expressly favor one type.

I'd like to point out, if no one else did on the IRC last night, that if you have Regeneration, you'd basically lose your power after using it. Not only that, it's still an extra Determination use. Sure, it drains an a wound ever turn.

Also, I see no difference between
>'1 HP/turn'
and
>'1 Max HP/turn'

That is just two ways of saying the same thing, and balances nothing about it.
>>
>>47351875
1hp per turn is countered by regeneration.
1 max per turn cannot be countered by regen.
1max per turn cannot be countered by determination or way out.

It's not that hard anon

I'm an idiot... What do ya want from me? But thanks for clearing it up. Though, that also brings up the following issue:

>Lowering your max HP doesn't mean you drop thresholds.
As it is, when you drop a Wound Threshold, it is when your current HP becomes less than 25%, 50%, and 75% of your Maximum HP. So, yes, you are still losing HP, but you are not actively losing Dice to roll due to being at lower thresholds. As long as you don't get hit, that is.

Second update: after you K.O., you get returned to your original max HP. Also, after using the coin, you treat Thresholds as being marked in the same places as before.
Finally: the coin no longer replenishes FP.
>>
>>47360270
Another update: the coin only replenishes half of your MP (rounding up), although any MP you had left when you died is kept as well.

Also: note that the 1 max HP/turn also reduces your current HP by 1/turn.
