Is an invasion of energy beings from another dimension still science fiction or already fantasy?
>>
Depends on whether you call it magic or use a technobabble term.
>>

It's science fantasy.

Depends entirely on how it's presented.

That's the only real distinction between sci-fi and fantasy.
>>
>>47257036
Depends on whether scientists have given up on understanding them.

Fantasy

Entirely arbitrary.

Genre theorists seem to agree that the distinction is largely aesthetic.

There's no such thing.
If it's Science Fiction, even extremely soft Science Fiction then it's part of the genre Science Fiction.
Take your imaginary line in the sand elsewhere.

"Science fantasy is a mixed genre within the umbrella of speculative fiction which simultaneously draws upon and/or combines tropes and elements from both science fiction and fantasy. It also sometimes incorporates elements of horror fiction."

Autistic people have a hard time understanding that there's more than black and white too anon.

It doesn't matter unless you care about hard-sci-fi.

When it comes to discussing genre and shit like magic it really sucks here.

If the energy beings are violent and kill us it's science fiction, but if they come in peace it's fantasy.

Yes.

Since science fiction is a subset of fantasy, the answer to your question is "42."

This.
Mostly.

Straight SciFi is a subset of "low" fantasy in that it is speculative in nature, so it necessarily stays within the bounds of Newtonian physics and, wherever possible, projects forward or sideways from actual recorded history. When it gets silly, and goes "extra-planar/ dimensional/ Alt-Earth/ etc. it can be freed from boring constraints like physics and those tiresome Euclidean geometries. Then, it becomes "high" fantasy.

AKA, Science Fantasy.

So kinda like this?
