How does /tg/ feel about furry races?

Liked when portrayed well (mouseguard) and I hear Ironclaw/jadeclaw are nice, /tg/ approved systems.

I find them more interesting than elves and dwarves and so on, simply because they often feel like not!human caricatures instead of anything that's unique or worth putting in a setting.

But this is 4chan, so get ready for a barrage of negative comments. Yiff in hell and so on and so forth.
>>
>>47245793
I like them because I grew up with them. A lot of my favorite cartoons growing up featured animal characters. So I still find them cute and fun.

A lot of people hate them and only think of them as fetish fuel, which makes me a little sad. I feel like they've gotten a bum rap because of it.
>>
>>47245818
I like furry races, but whenever someone makes one, to me, they're as original as elves, dwarfs, orc, considering, c'mon it's a fukken furry. Not hatin, just saying.>>47245818
>>
>>
>>47245793
If it looks cool, has interesting culture, and is designed by someone who doesn't obviously think I should want to have sex with it, then it's okay in my book. I probably won't play it, but I won't disregard it out of hand.

Noble Savage tropes are out. I can't fucking stand narratives about the wise, misunderstood beast race oppressed by ignorant xenophobic humans. And "finding out" this beast race is morally, culturally, and spiritually superior in every way.

Beast races that actually look bestial and non-human, 100% fine. This includes stuff like the Khajiit and Argonians of Elder Scrolls.

"Human with cat ears and a tail" or "Human with a coat of fur", no. That includes your topic pic, anime catgirls, stuff like Krystal from Star Fox, ect.
It's almost always just there because of someone's fetish or a really lame excuse for animal powers. I honestly prefer the boring elves and dwarves and stuff.
>>
I think I'd like them more in the role of the kind of silly, zany race than your various flavors of midget humans, for example. I suppose because I always think of them as cartoonish and funny in that way.
>>
>>47245793
As original as the default Tolkien races. The more interesting species design I find is more often in Sci Fi where artists design aliens to look really legitimately non human and unique as fuck.

In fantasy, a race that is Not!Human has
>humanoid body
>add animal features like ears or tail
>optional snout
>that's it
>>
>>47245793
I don't mind them at all, assuming they're not only serving as magical realm.

They are usually more boring cookie cutter stereotypes than the various elf subraces and furshit to boot, absolutely disgusting.
>>
This is one of those things that requires a good amount of analysis. You see, /tg/ like all groups doesn't inherently have something. It hates things that are poorly done. Needless to say, furrys with snouts have an unfortunate tradition of being done poorly and suffer from having multi animals in humanoid figure's instead of one breed or species of animal being the single basis for the race.

Now the lack of their reason for existance or origin in the setting beyond a personal judgement of coolness on the part of the author or player aside, they rarely bring anything to the table ingame aside from fetish material and "cry for my doggirl" and at their worse they are bullshit combat monsters or social domineers. For instance, crocodile man having +5 racial to damage on a bite and armor bonus when attacked from behind, and catgirl having +5 to her social rolls are two respective examples.

Now as for why were OK with Gnolls but not heyena men and women, it's because they are not system breaking, they have a reasonable place in the setting, and they are not treated as the amazing race with a horrible reputation. As for /tg/ being ok with humanfaced furrys it's because they can be writen off as Magicly affected animals or humans like lycanthrope. Something snouted furry creators often fail to recognise.

That's all I have for now, questions or comments?
>>
>>47245793
As you can see, good anon, /tg/ is rather conflicted on the matter.

If they player pitching it calls it "furry" then I'd probably object. But if they said something like "beastman" I probably wouldn't mind. Because use of terminology like that speaks a lot about the player. Similarly, saying "loli" as opposed to "little girl" or "young girl."

I don't play RPGs to indulge in fetishes, whether I share in enjoying them (loli) or don't (furry).

No problem. Also be careful how you present the race from different cultural points of view. Such things often decide on how they are veiwed, like how tiefling and half orc player get some odd glances as their race choice is considered as being needlessly edgy. Most of the above stemming from them being treated as social anomolys by the rulebook discription in most d&d editions.

Eh, they bring to the setting what I say they bring to the setting, just like any other race I decide to add or not add. Multi-animal or whatever has nothing to do with it, unless the person crafting the setting makes that an issue.

The only real difference is that animal races have more of a stigma than the stock races.

So OP, the real question is this: How much do base your decisions on other people's biases? The one thing I agree with the quoted poster on is this: The only difference between a good furry race and the trash that /tg/ is expecting is how well they are presented.
>>

We hate furries, but Beast races are a classic in fantasy. What can we do?
>>
>>47246131

All of >>47246056 applys to those a well.

I hate furfags that try to insert their shit in my games, but if there's a reason there's beast folk in a setting, I'll be fine with it as long as no one go along the line of being a fuckwit with it like making your cat girl a titty monster on your character art
Or some other shit in that domain.

I don't mind players making their cat folk stealthy rogues because that's how cats are for most parts, or making your dog man a loyal and honorbound knight, because that goes along with the tropes, although breaking tropes is fine too, like say an eagle man alchemist that loves to make dirty bombs, you'd see a buzzard kinda do that, but not the splendorous and amaizing eagle

Let me ask you this: Is it fine if the elf is a titty monster? Or are you of the opinion that nobody should be focusing on crafting their characters as sex objects first and characters second?

If it's the latter I agree with you. Not that I don't like busty elves.
>>
I find it amusing how /tg/ often can't decide whether "more bestial" or "more human" is the solution, agreeing only that 50/50 is furry and therefore heresy.

It's odd how the entire concept of these kinds of characters boils down to the question of whether or not some obnoxious faggot would stroke their dick to it. Could you imagine if every other race were judged on that criteria alone?

I mean it's fine if folks just don't like the aesthetic - hell, I can't stand gnomes and halflings and the like - but it's sad that this association with the furry fandom and their bullshit has all but ruined the entire concept of a humanoid animal race.

Simple; usually they only exist as poorly disguised fetish fuel for That Guy or the creepy as all hell GM. I mean sure, I like my well endowed Elf Sluts as much as the next guy, but furry shit is often borderline bestiality. It's either that, or they're just a race of living breathing stereotypes with no character all all (often placed as pandering for That Guys). However there are exceptions to the rule. Like for example: the Beastmen from WF, who personify the barbarism and cruelty from chaos, whose design is literally plucked from the Roman's description of the Germanic Barbarians that sacked the Western Empire.

Or the Khajit, who have their own massively underrated lore all but ignored by the general ES fan base. But these are seemingly rare diamonds in the rock just covered with mountains of yiff and fedora sperm. And that is a very shameful thing, not only because of the imprint Beastmen have left on our imaginations but also the fact we may be sharing our world with other sapient species like the Dolphin or the Black Bird.

it is healthier to not trust /tg/'s community on this matter, they will almost always judge it by "what kind of player would play this (read: furfags with raging boners under the table)"

treat beastfolk in the same manner as if you would have to deal with elf races , or other classical ones.
they are good as long as they fit into the setting , are balanced in gameplay terms , and make sense with their natural quirks (or have consequences that make sense) .
and avoid the elf problem of being humans +1 because muh beauty/agelessness/wisdom/politeness/etc

and dont give a shit about people trying to make a character waifu material , as long as it doesnt go into unintended ERP. this single wretched individual does not represent its race as a whole.

now go and feel free to apply this to every other fantasy race

This is where another one of /tg/s prime irritants comes in. The lack of originality that comes from furrys. /tg/ cannot stand when animal races decide to follow their real world counterparts to the letter. Also a lead in or even refrence to their social structure around genderlines will likely set a fa/tg/guy or Ca/tg/irl off.

It's highly irritating when the gender dynamics or worse, reproductive systems, come up on furrys. That's mostly due to the fetish associations and has come to be expected. Thus any reference, even saying breeding out of the reproductive context, is usually a poor idea.

There's tons of fun theme shenanigans with it, too.
I'm always fond of setting things up to be at odds with each other.

>spiritual/civilised dragonmans vs. practical/barbarian tigermans constantly one-upping each other with crazy martial arts
>lawful/tyrannical giant lion things vs. chaotic/free-spirited unicorns, each manipulating the civilisations in the area
>pseudoroman wolf people fighting pseudogermanic deer with blood rites on both sides
>>
>>47246820
There's a line /tg/ has for how much counterpart mirroring is enough or not enough, unfortunately that line shifts hourly.
>>
>>47246820
I would just play a anthro character that is just, you know, a dude.

Like, he could be a wolf dude, or a tiger, dude, or a lion dude, but all in all, just a dude.

Like, a normal dude.

No "noble lion" traits, or "solitary wolf" traits, or, whatever traits belong to tigers.

Just a dude.
>>
>>47246807
no way, friend is adament to keep dragons because they're a classic myth beast.

How the fuck do you nerf a giant, fire spewing, flying carnivorous dragon?

My idea was that several of the smaller animal races ban together to keep the dragons in check and they get additional help by the asian dragons (which are good alignment) versus the usually evil european dragons
>>
>>47246820
Different strokes for different folks. I personally prefer not to have them take most of their quirks and behavioral cues from the kind of animal they are based on. Some is fine, but too much and it gets really weird. Some would disagree.
>>
>>47246839
The right way to go about the character, the wrong way to go about the race as a whole. That's the distinction we often fail to recognize.

Either your BSing and trying to piss tg off or your honestly having trouble. As cynical as I am I'll take the bait.

You can't just have them band together. Nulify some of the dragons powers by daily limits, item dependencies, or situationals. And give the others bonuses based on culture if that's not enough.

The best option however, would be to tell him not to push the bullshit and just write a book if he wants them to be the best at everything.

I'm not interested in the porn, I'm interested in the worldviews and how it shapes the cultures. I am using the biology as an inspiration, but nowhere near "to the letter".
The lions in that example might naturally think of particularly dangerous jobs as 'women's work', or have religious restrictions against killing the males of the species, or even just the fact that their military is 99% women, and they have the perfect societal setup for expansion. The hyenas might specify male demon summoners in their oral history, so all tribally approved spellcasters are technically officially female and it's just a cultural thing no one checks on.

I don't like them because I can't summarize an idea I have without it sounding furry by default. I want beast races that evolved like us and as a result may lose some features you'd come to expect from them. They could evolve some new features as well. Pic related to get an idea. The resemblance to our closest living relatives is there but we're still obviously separated by many thousands of years. So the same would be true of a wolf and a dogperson. Also no fat tits on anything but humans.

If I just said "I'd like to see animal inspired races" your first assumption would be furry fetish stuff or humans with a few animal parts grafted on.

it's not a D&D thing, it's a comic we're working on that could go into a vidya game direction.

Do they need to be PCs?
Vary the strength across the race, like you have the ones that are 30 feet long and eat people for fun, then the ones that are only seven feet tall or so and are vaguely related and they work with each other.

On an only vaguely related note, the ottrekin from Dawngate are a favorite of mine. They've got the water connection, but their main tie to the rest of the setting comes from the fact that they're riverboat pirate gypsies that you deal with because you have to. Their affinity for water informs what they do; it's not the entirety of what they do.

Like anything else, these races can be done well, or done poorly. What gives people pause is that when they're done wrong, they tend to be wrong in one specific way. So anything that draws parallels to "I want to fuck this thing" sends off more alarm bells than a typical sexy elf character or the like would do in the same situation.

Fox Spirits probably are the only kind of beast race I actually enjoy to play as, for a number of reasons.

1- They aren't proper animals, nor they want to be. Since the beginning these supernatural beings are branded as anything that's not human nor fox.

2- They are tricksters, cunning shapeshifters, masters of illusion, experts in the subtle art of perfecting appearances, painting dreadful nightmares in the mind of their foes and cornering enemies with their own weaknesses.

3- Although their true appearance basically looks like red/silver foxes with multiple tails, they believe that the human body is the closest physical shape of perfection and excellence, so they try to mimic it almost all the time. However, just a little bit of distraction can ruin the disguise and expose ears and tails that shouldn't be there.

In some tales, yeah, they are foxes who managed to reach a hundred years old and obtained sentience and supernatural powers. However there are others that present them as ethereal, otherworldly entities who either served as benevolent heralds of the god Inari, or demonic, mischievous vulpine ghosts really really committed to the task of tormenting mortals ( often referenced as Nogitsune). I thought that was Vishnu? Also on the note of that story, the boar is generally depicted as humanoid, so demon fighting Hindu P'orcs trying to emulate their giant, angry god sounds like a great idea

I miss that game too, but it was all about sakari and zeri

Was there ever an ask-the-devs for where the plot was going, or did that get vaulted too?

Would they all see each other as the same species, too?

I'm with you anon. I'm sad that furries exist, and I take my steps to work around it and show people that good proper beastfolk blues.

Pretty much every game I've been in has been set in a world of anthro-critters. It's been pretty fun.

Depends. If it's an adolescent dragon in a humanoid form or dragonborn, it's doable. If you're a literal, giant, fuckmothering dragon with thousands of years of life and +200 wisdom and all that, then I'd have to advise you to cut that autism out.

Anything resembling this pic is furfaggotry of the highest order. The Inquisition has been notified.

It's only Furry if they're remarkably sexualized and/or walk around trying to fuck everything with a pulse.

Otherwise I have no issue with animal races.

Why? Well, you can tone down on wisdom - that's full DnD bullshit. Even oriental dragons aren't that wise.

Like poetry, stupid furfags with stupid arguments.
>>
>>47250395
Just saying it's been almost ten years since furfags were really a problem. You shouldn't get triggered by animal people anymore, especially considering how prevalent they are in fantasy
>>
>>47250324
Because most taverns have roofs that go up maybe 10 feet, and are made of thatch.

When you're 1000 years old and the size of a mountain side it rather dampens your ability to partake in the bard's latest shenanigans.
>>
>>47250481
They have never stopped being annoying fags. Even when you leave furfags alone and ask them politely to not put their fetishes where other people don't want them to be, they can't fucking do that and respect personal space of other people.
>>
>>47250576
But you're the one screaming about fetishes where none are. Not every person who likes beastmen is jacking off to them, just like not everyone who likes elves likes tg style slut elves. It's annoying to have people like you REEEEEing in every thread even vaguely related to animal races. If people shoving their fetishes everywhere and oversexualizing things is your issue, then go bitch in one of the tower girls or cheesecake or sexy elf/orc/dwarf/etc threads.
>>
Depends entirely on how they're presented. Inhuman monsters who prey on humans? Sounds fine. Fellow sapients with some mental traits of their original animals taken into consideration but only to the same degree as humanity being social because we evolved from a social species? Also fine. Cartoonish caricatures of their original species? Only in a comedic setting, and even then you're being lazy. Enlightened and noble victims of humanity or inheritors of our world after we destroyed ourselves in our hubris? I'd rather fellate a cactus.

There's two main things.

The obnoxious furries (furfags) that people complain about think that their viewpoint is (relatively) common or accepted. This leads them to think it's normal, or at least okay, to inject what they enjoy into unrelated areas. Of course, furry fandom in the manner you'll find on FurAffinity and the like is not commonplace, even on the internet. You are aware of the existence, but it has hardly made a significant impact on anyone's lives. However, to these furries, the fandom encompasses a lot of their life, so to them it does have impact and meaning. Therefore they find justification in their actions.

The anti-furry-ists that complain at anyone vaguely showing appreciation for anthropomorphic animals, conceptual, graphical, or otherwise, have a similar problem. They think that the vast majority of the world vehemently despises that which they despise, so gain confidence and perceived validity in their arguments. To them, furries are the most depraved beings on the planet; they exhibit conformation bias and take any additional experience of unpleasant members of the fandom as further proof of their claims. Anyone who enjoys furry fandom is clearly either naive or delusional, which only serves to strengthen their belief. At the end of the day, they ignore the vast, vast majority of furries who you'd pass in the street without ever knowing, and the fact that many, many people enjoy aspects of furry culture without subscribing to the sexual (or fursona, or otherkin) side of it all.

But, of course, I'm an appeasing centrist scum who is too non-confrontational to see the Truthâ„¢.

Obviously this is all top-notch memery, though. I, for one, welcome our new anthropomorphic overlords.

Bein' an obnoxious special snowflake with magical realmz iz not limited to furfags. Anthropomorphic animals are innocent.

You are all furfags. I've seen time and time again how this innocent "beastmen" threads and animal lead to same fetish discussions and yiff. Furfags like you are beyond redemption. Go fellate a working chainsaw, you will do humanity a favor.
