Cylinder habs have like 12 meter armored hulls with bedrock and stuff. They'll get messed up, but survival depends on range. Remember, most casaba howitzer designs use pretty small nukes, typically a few KT. Even if you spear the hab, it's large, durable, and filled with air enough that damage is likely to be repaired before anything to crazy happens, except at very short range.

A casaba howitzer's range is a function of the width of it's cone. Research in the past suggests a limit of about .1 Rad for the half-angle of the cone, which limits practical range against soft targets to thousands of kilometers.

But it's not like he's a particle physics genius, most knowledge skills are likely sociology, philosophy, etc... with college level education in everything else.

The problem is that it's pretty hard to stat out a transhuman that's much more dangerous in a shootout than the average Eclipse Phase PC. There are certain 'optimal' build choices that basically any character can take (maximizing speed, initiative, chance to hit and damage) which put them on par stat-wise with the deadliest ultimate you could possibly create using the rules.
The way you'd really have to distinguish someone like Bhattacharya is by out-playing the players, using strategy and tactics to outsmart them and tip the odds massively in his favor at every turn.
The problem with this is that unless you yourself are genuinely a tactical genius, it's difficult to come up with something that doesn't either fall flat or just feel cheap ("oh, you found a flaw in my defenses? just according to keikaku XD")

Well, characters like Bhattacharya also shouldn't be constrained by say, character creation rules. They've had a long time to virtually build up RP and spend it, so such characters should easily have their maximum points in their noted skills, with proper specialization if applicable, probably some cool traits, etc.
Alternatively, since Eclipse Phase PCs are not heroes of a noble age or marked by destiny or any other number of caveats or qualifiers to PCs in many other games, the GM can just say "yeah, you don't beat Bhattacharya in a fist fight". While snowflakism is almost encouraged by the CC system, at the same time player characters in EP are not extraordinarily special, or anything. Characters like Bhattacharya are like, living legends or persons of extraordinary quality - the kinds of people PCs have to work around rather than say, duke it out with.

It doesn't matter if the players are special or not. Combat in Eclipse Phase isn't adjudicated based on which character is more important. It's adjudicated based on the rules for combat described in the corebook.

As much as there is likely hero worship going on, the Ultimate's did have the best track record of any transhuman against the TITANs during the Fall. Bhattacharya fought in some of the worst and most horrific battles and survived, even won some. Sure, they're not posthuman Seed AIs that could actually win, but as far as human shaped beings go they're the best there is.

Fighting Bhattacharya 1-v-1 is probably not something a PC should succeed at doing. Gang up on him maybe if you're all combat badasses, but the leader of a polity would not often be in a situation where 3-6 random Firewall scrubs get him alone.

If you give him hard numbers, that implies that you can just throw dice at him until he's done, which I don't think properly encapsulates his position in the universe. So I'll be running Eclipse Phase for a group of people completely new to the setting, and who aren't terribly familiar with sci-fi RPGs, being used to fantasy d20. The interest is there though.
I plan on having the premise of the game be simple and very Shadowrun-esque: they're freelancers on Mars who work for people with the right amount of cred. They take jobs that are simple in premise, no bizarre transhuman stuff; those are stuff I introduce slowly and gradually.

Mars has roads and trains, and I think trucks and maglev cars both have stats, to highway and train robberies (and vice versa) are applicable.
Lot of shady office parks and corp buildings in various Martian cities, good for a smash and grab, a hideout or a dead drop.
Nomads and Rednecks are a great thing when you're in the outback, draw on cultures from North Africa, Middle East and Central Asia there. And remember that Smart Horses and Smart Camels are things.
The Elevator is great for certain "closed circle" ideas, it takes time but has its merits. And Mars has a lot of academic institutions which could be interesting.
One thing I think Sunward does perfectly is description of major Martian Cities, so brush up on that because there's a decent amount of material on the neighborhoods, subcultures and clades in those cities. All kinds of interesting things can be gleaned from the bridges in Noctis, the different domes in VNS or in the divides between locales in Elysium.
And y'know, when you want shit to get freaky, there's always the TQZ and the Arsia Mons smugglers, and the Martian Gate. Pathfinder City is described as space vegas.

It's also for passenger security.
Typically, your mesh inserts and equipment are checked for illegal data before entering the elevator. The problem being that it's hard to not provide mesh access. Hidden transceivers, the elevator's own communications equipment, even just a series of nodes along the stalk. Hell, your mesh inserts have a range of 20 klicks in open areas, and the stalk needs sensors along its length to report on any structural issues. Those need to communicate without adding even more weight from physical wires capable of handling the transmissions, so a chain gang of transceivers is there. And any meshed system can be hacked.
Also, passengers want their comforts, and that includes mesh access. Look at how short of a time it took for the FAA to allow WiFi and Airplane mode during flights. It was fast in government time.
Airgapped control electronics? yeah. But they're just one part of a complex electronic network that reports on every aspect of the cab. And that's a vulnerability. Even with physical wires, I could download malware using the cabs mesh access, pop a panel and insert a data jack into a maintenance test port. Or solder a connection to some piece of equipment. Bam, payload delivered. Only real way to protect against that is to decrease efficiency by almost a factor of ten because every system is airgapped, they have to examine all the data for malware, and then physically transfer any needed data to another system.
Or they could check me for malware, and perform heavy monitoring on all mesh traffic, and that's easy to throttle. People expect some inconvenience while travelling, just not much.
