I don't know what this shit is called but the anime, furry, cutesy Kobolds enrage my grognard sensibilities.

Kobolds are monsters to be slaughtered.
>>
>>47233104
Low level fodder should not be immune to slides.

And OP? That's a Dragonborn.
>>
>>47233104
Probably the one concept that has changed so severly from their folklore origin that I wonder if I should be upset about the falsification of information or be fascinated by the creativity of people.

Apart from that they give me nothing, meaning I'm indifferent about them as a general character race.

I think they've gone from a joke race to a disguise for people with twink, shotacon/lolicon, furry and other fetishes to 'legitimize' their character concept in media or games they participate in.

Also on the same level of disguising waste of space that K-On and other 'cute X doing cute things' genre of Anime occupies.

Finally, they continue the trend of providing a small counterpart to 'morally ambiguous race you can stab for loot'. Orcs and Goblins, Kobolds and Dragons, Halflings and Humans, etc etc.
>>
>>47234398

>disgusting*

On the other end of the spectrum, you have the 'srs bsns' kobold faggot who tries to make them hardcore, tacticool, or veer straight into Edgy so you will take them seriously. This its own brand of retarded.

At the end of the day I don't see a purpose for them in my own fiction and I don't keep with friends who default to 'cute child-like race' as their first pick every game.

The complete, almost opposite, disparity of the different types of creatures all called "kobolds" is pretty weird. That said, small lizardlike creatures with an affinity for dragons and dying quickly are a good addition to your basic fantasy world.

People play them too stupidly, though. They're often treated as nothing more than xp fodder when really they should be like intelligent rats. Traps, ambush tactics, and skirmishing, if executed well, can help them punch above their weight class. Class levels in Ranger or the nearest equivalent are always fantastic. Inflict Tucker's Kobolds on mid-level adventurers to teach them about tactics, humility, and thinking outside the box.
>>
Furfaggot garbage. I honestly don't know why "kobold threads" ate allowed on /tg/.

Plenty of reptiles have bodyhair; it's not much of a stretch.
Alternatively you could use eye-approximate ridges to emulate the same effect, with females having longer brow-ridges than males, who may have no brow-ridges at all.

>>
>>47241310

Not quite

>>47241498

Yes. Though I'm not sure that it's imperials which are the deciding factor. It's quite probable that the hist have different opinions and strategies, and thus argonians from one region to the next (both within and outside the blackmarsh) will feature different anatomical motifs. While argonians do not have independent souls, the hist merely work in unison, they are not in and of themselves a hivemind.

I do like this take, especially if you go a step further and tie dragons in again.

>Gigantic, unintelligent, but naturally magical feathered serpents flying all over the place and being apex predators (i.e. eating anything that moves)
>Vaguely similar somewhat feathered kobolds see that stuffing them makes them leave you the fuck alone and maybe even lets them extract venom and or magic feathers or scales
>Start raiding the neighbor tribes, building big platforms, and killing shittons of the neighbors on top of them to attract feathered serpents
>Dress it all up in religion later
>Jungles full of kobolds in monster hunter style gear wanting to capture you and feed you to a giant fuckoff dragon

My favorite takes:

>Kobolds are the smallest, shittiest dragons, but they can eventually get that big and mean. Dragons don't produce sexually, but can pass on 'blessings' to favored tribes at the cost of magic shenanigans. Constant infighting and dickery makes sure only the tricksiest and smartest kobolds become dragons.

>Kobolds trapped in ancient dwarf hold get to reading, develop the idea of working for themselves, get a particularly tyrannical dragon that comes in and tries to take over, gank him with an electrified throne. Leadership rules by not-entirely-unjustified fear that dragons will come to fuck them all up, resulting in a horrible semisoviet police state

>Symbiotic relationship where the kobolds serve as guards and laborers and the dragons take out threats to the warren as a whole, with kobolds joining in on the fight- Dragons wearing harnesses with a bunch of kobold snipers on, and boarding actions back and forth, and the like

>Imperial chinese kobolds that believe dragons are soul repositories, maybe a few dozen dragons in the entire empire all revered as living gods, with all the infighting and politics that imperial chinese would imply

>>
>>47242777

Which is a non-reptilian trait.

Not that I'm against non-reptilian traits in my fantasy critters. It's just that I generally object to the idea that there's anything more/less "scientific" about this trait or that.

It just creates a false set of limitations that distracts from the real reason behind the mishmash of traits, which is appeal to symbolism/tropes/relability.
>>
>>47242953
Comes down to whether they're closer on the dragon side of things and are just really small and shitty, or whether they're more reptilian and the dragon bit is added on.

I could also see kobolds as being deliberately a mishmash race, like shorter mongrelmen that anyone actually cared about. Dragons came through and tried to make them dragonblooded servitors, magical interbreeding with other stuff happened, so a random kobold off the street might have scales, feathers, AND fur in random patches, a horn on one side and a floppy ear on the other, and mismatched everything else, as well.

Add in frantic "We wuz dragons and proud" and it becomes sadly hilarious.
>>
>>47242750

>Kobolds realize dragons are just dragons and share no actual heritage with them. Form an anti-dragon army out of spite and revenge. Try to free other tribes from monarch dragon rule. They're awful at it though.
>>
>>47233104
I like to play them one of three or so ways, honestly.
The first and least threatening is a very DF method of playing them- they're communal, cave-dwelling, vaguely dog-like creatures that are driven by two things- kleptomania and fear, in that order. They're perfect for low-level adventurers because no matter how much you try, completely clearing them out seems impossible, they're just too skilled at running; but they're also numerous and non-sapient pests. Sometimes the party will find cool stuff in the caves, but the kobold definition of value is questionable at best.

Version two is the more classic reptile version. These guys are a bit smarter than above, but not much more threatening. They do have a couple of advantages, such as tool use, but come in smaller social groups and steal less often. They usually aren't dangerous, but every so often they'll form what is essentially a cult around a dragon or dragon-like creature, in which they begin to steal much more to appease their dragon, in turn having a dragon to protect their caves. Although the dragon will sometimes eat them, get bored and leave, or otherwise not be helpful if trinkets are not kept flowing in.

The third kind are also a bit like DF kobolds, but they are devious bastards with insanely lethal lairs. The kobolds themselves are not all that threatening, but they have mastered the art of trapmaking. The entire experience is much like a fantasy 'Nam, except you can't leave, there's always a kobold den -somewhere- nearby. The only way to get rid of them is to make sure they never take root somewhere in the first place, and even if you can drive them off, their lairs are so filled with lethal traps that they tend to claim lives many years after being cleared, only for another to spring up. They rarely do trigger their own traps, but don't care that much even when they do- they breed like crazy and are good at running.

>>

>>47247478
I'm not making you diagrams.
The explanation isn't that hard. Mammals don't actually have their tits swell that much from milk. The majority of breast mass is just for show, and was developed because the ass is a sexual signifier and you can't see the ass from the front.

Basically, big brained and bipedal means they need wide birthing canals and also cannot see the butt, and will thus have evolutionary pressures to make an auxillary butt. Probably on the front.

Hopefully on the front.

Nature might put it somewhere weird.

>>47247505

Those are absolutely FANTASTIC kobolds.

They're one of my core races, they're essentially reptilian Jews.

Ever since those fuckers killed my first character I've never forgiven them.
>>
>>47252780
you sound like my buddy brian, he lost a lvl 18 ffighter/thief to a double crit in 2nd edd dnd. Has gleefully murdered every kobold he's encountered in my games, regardless of alignment. Wish i could keep them safe from his rampages, i think kobolds are cute and make funny tavern "villians" to catch in silly hijix. Like going full mission impossible to steal the tip jar or some strong booze someone just shelled out for. Not gonna lie, i throw kobolds in here and there just to watch how creative he'll get to kill it without getting caught.
>>
>>47233104
Crappy minion race for when you got tired of throwing goblins at players, now nothing but furry bait.
>>
>>47242877
my first contact with Kobolds was from Warcraft, so you can probably imagine my surprise when I got on /tg/ and found out otherwise.

My favorite setting for kobolds is the 21st century as blue collar workers, hoping everyday they aren't fired and replaced by younger kobolds. Then fired by the boss who is a dragon who bresthes fire.

Goblins are better.

But both are vermin species by and large.
>>
>>47260409

Goblins are boring though. Kobolds can be kind of cool at least, goblins are just goblins. A constant of goblin.

Seems like you're just willfully ignorant. Or literally know only one kind of Goblin.
>>

Fuck 'em.
Frequently.
>>
>>47260905

Tell me about goblins, I know of the lime green variety, the brown-green variety, the dark green vwriety, the light green varirty, the green green variety, and the freakish human flesh colored ones. That are always, minions, tinkerers, or thief... oh, with the ever so rare shaman with bones as decorative clothes accessory.

Just the ones I've seen?

Snow, jungle, spider, night, standard, city

All of them have different traditions, societal personalities and dispositions, political standings.

I'm pretty sure Kobolds are the same way. It's just a preference thing, I like Goblins more than Kobolds.

Pretty cool in general. Like to play em as being a mix of the Vietcong and the Mafia.
>>
>>47233104
I like making them genetically unstable, with variants arising from a few generations of different environments and diets. Lets me using all the different types people come up with at once, some more civilized than others. All the same stats though.

I follow the belief that their only means of survival is being so insignificant that nobody really minds them.

They are either slaving away under dragons 24/7 diverting any attention away from them or so insignificant and weak alone that they are no more of a problem that a racoon.

>>
>>47265192
I have both lizardbold and dogbolds, though the dogbolds are called kobalds but nobody cares enough to know that the names are different and no way related.
the two hate each other because of this, lizard because they are the true kobold and the dogs because they aren't filthy kobols

Are tropical kobolds and the like particularly different in temperment to temperate ones? And what about Polar 'bolds? Size? Activity?

Better question: Why are there kobolds in the polars?

We see neither dogs, nor rats or lizards there. Why should the little shiteaters grovel there?
