So casting magic, usually summons
Let's say summon a flame atronach for 30 seconds
Is that spell, lore-wise, a single concentrated effort during the initial summon, or are summons a constant effort to upkeep and the time restraint is just gameplay
>>
>>47231500
I'm sure it's possible to do it both ways, but it's likely much more practical to use the former. The whole point of summoning is to gain support, support is rather useless when you are forced to focus upkeep it.

Zurin's connection to Magnus could be referential, in the manner that Zurin in many ways fulfills the Mage archetype, much like Sotha Sil. Likewise Varieties of Faith also states that Magnus is believed to sometimes come and bless people with incredible magical ability, which may just be a funny way of explaining why some people are unnaturally adept with magic. What I'm really saying here is that Zurin's connection to Magnus may be based in the fact that he is undeniably one of, if not, the greatest mage to ever live.
However, it should also be mentioned that Magnus hasn't given up on Mundus. He regrets leaving and still looks back on the world. He does this through the Elder Scrolls that record history, and return to him whenever your hero becomes a legend.
Which perhaps brings a whole new meaning to this quote.
>Each event is preceded by prophecy. But, without the hero, there is no event.
>Zurin Arctus

Why do people say this? Oblivion had some really great lore about things like Pelinal Whitestrake and Alessia, and getting to actually see some realms of Oblivion, as well as other little bits of lore about magic or life in Tamriel. You even get Lost Boy Cavern and its interest lich.

Let's talk about Orcs for a bit:

I've never enjoyed the idea of Orc chieftains having all the wives, personally. It seems like something that will always end in disaster and means you can only have communities so large.

But I've found an (unfortunately ESO) related source that talks about how a lot of the wives fulfill certain roles for the chief, including being bodyguards. Which to me not only makes these marriages seem more useful, instead of a waste of potentially useful warriors and bearers of children, and perhaps hints that these marriages are only political - perhaps the wives are allowed to have dalliances?

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/chronicles-king-kurog-book-v

Still not as cool as King Gortwog by any means.
>>
>>47245934
Tbh I don't even like the idea of Orcs being super tribal. The Skyrim-style Orc strongholds felt like too much of an attempt to make them seem primitive without actually making it interesting at all.

On that last note:

>The only troubling sign for Orsinium is a religious conflict that has brewed over the last ten years. Traditionally, the Orcs have worshiped the Daedra Malacath (Mauloch) as their patron deity. Gortwog, however, has established a new priesthood devoted to the worship of Trinimac, the ancient hero of the Orcs, who legend has it was devoured by Boethia and became the Daedra Malacath. The Orc King's belief that Trinimac still lives and that Malacath is a separate entity, a demon whose aim was to keep the Orsimer pariah folk forever, is the official position of the shaman priests of Orsinium. A minority of traditionalists within the territory, and the majority of Orcs without, view this as heresy. There is fear even among those who support Gortwog and Orsinium that turning their back on the Daedric Prince of the Bloody Oath is a dangerous policy indeed.

Do you think that the idea of worshiping Trinimac worked out? Or could it have ever worked?

No, the Khajiit don't see Azurah as entirely separate from Azura, but she's to them very much a different kind of spirit. She doesn't appear to have a lot to do with the Azura seen in other myths, though that can be debated.

As for if they portray her as a cat, I really don't know. It would certainly not surprise me, seeing as they portray most other deities as cats. That said, there's a difference between Azurah and most other Khajiiti gods.
The gods of the Khajiiti come in litters. The first litter is Alkosh, Khenarthi, Magrus, Mara and S'rendarr, most of whom are described as cats or cat-related. Khenarthi is just called the Winds.
The second litter is Hermorah, Hircine, Merrunz, Mafala, Sangiin, Sheggorath and others. With the exception of Hermorah, who is called the Tides, all the others are described as cats.
But Azurah is part of the final litter, together with the Moons and their Motions (the ja'Kha'jay), Nirni, and finally Lorkhaj. Later came Namiira. None of these are, to my knowledge, ever described as cats. The Moons and their Motions certainly aren't, nor is Nirni, who is Azurah's sister. I know Lorkhaj lends Ra'Wulfharth hor roar in "The Tale of Dro'Zira", which is kind of a cat-depiction. He's also called "Moon Beast", which isn't necessarily catlike either.

So I dunno. Azurah might be depicted as a cat, but in that case she's possibly be the odd one out from her litter.

Sotha Sil is said to be a Dunmer in 2920 iirc. while it could be said that's a bad source it makes sense given Sotha Sil is always the guy talking about the glorious new future of the Velothi, one source even mentions how he states the change to Dunmer was a blessing rather than a curse. It also works rather poetically, given we have one god who is golden, one god who os half golden half grey, and then what would be one god who is grey.

When the Chimer changed into the Dunmer, who was it that stood in front of a crowd of Dunmer and explained that the new change was a gift, not a curse? It was Sotha Sil. Don't you think he'd look like a hypocrite if he had Chimer skin?

Case in point, Sotha Sil kept his new Dunmer Appearance, whilst Almalexia reverted back to her Chimer skin, and Vivec being the half between the two

That might, in a sense, be true. The problem with the prison analogy is that if the prison falls apart, then you disappear along with it. Unless you find your way off the sinking ship by evacuating to another or ascend to a higher spiritual level.

The Redguards have it right, I suppose, when they believe you have to earn the right to return to the Far Shores. They are bit strange given that they on some points agree with the Altmer.

I'm back.
I was wondering why there weren't some of Daggerfall's spells in UESRPG. I feel like Passwall and Tongues and a few others would really fit, especially with things like Bend Reality and there being language skills.

Also, what is Bend Reality supposed to look like? Do you warp to the place like Blink, does the land shift around you like FMA, or does it just augment your ability to jump or run?

Most definitely.
Look at those eyes, it's like he's about to give some serious love.

I went through and grabbed spells primarily from 3-5 because there's a serious gap between Daggerfall and Morrowind in terms of the overall tone of the setting, as well as a discontinuity in terms of how things work.

We did take some things from Daggerfall, though, and by the sound of it there's some more we could grab.

I am a real fan of your work, Seht. I mean it unironically. You've made a beaufitul system with the the rest of the dev team and I salute you for it.

Even with all your bugs, typos and other stuff you leave for later. Like the 50% less CrP offer on an appropiate racial skill, where you could get to master rank with less than 2k CrP.

I disbelieved that you could do so in the beginning, given that the wording was so ambigious. I've even started to exploit it for what it is worth. I suppose I am glad you're limiting it to journeyman. At least that way I won't have to deal with a master archmage/swordsman in the group and fear that the guy/gal will roast/sword my ass if I so much as twitch the wrong way.

I had to live with somebody like that in the group and my experience is realted to the pic.

Also, it seems like you haven't adjusted the xp guide for levels (y'know, the one detaling 10k = epic and so forth) from the period when you had 50% off on favoured to this new age of having 25% off on favoured stats. Effective xp/crp is different.

Oh, and will there ever be a time, when small-time mages can have spell-casting alternatives to power well? It seems to be mandatory if you want to play a mage and not knowing about that can cripple mages after character creation. Especially if a campaign has a heavy focus on combat. (Mine had)

I am looking forward to any additions that could enable a good roleplaying experience and I still love the shit out of the game. I'll be playing a political/economical campaign in a while and it'll be set in the reign of Septimus Mede. Oh, it'll be glorious.

Don't forget there's room for all sorts of different cultures, and High Rock is honestly on pretty good terms with Hammerfell overall, and were traditionally favorable to the Empire and Cyrodiil, so they're one of the few provinces to actually have strong friendly relations with others.

Also don't forget Mysticism. In their earliest lore, they were described more as druids.

Hey, I was looking at the 1st edition Pocket Guide to the Empire, and I noticed the Invocation in the beginning had some stuff for the Daedric Princes written backwards. I tried writing it properly:

To BOETHIAH the Fount of Inspiration.
To HIRCINE who is Half the Conscience of Men.
To MALACATH who speaks all Language Sideways.
To MEHRUNES DAGON whose mistress is the Blazing Sun.
To SHEOGORATH the Comforter of Men.
To MOLAG BAL whose Breath is Most Foul.
To NAMIRA whose Works endure forever.
To MEPHALA who threads the Needle with the Hair of wives.
To CLAVICUS VILE who always answers.
To NOCTURNAL whose Touch is Mink.
To PERYITE whose Foundation is Falling Rock.
To AZURA the Rim of all Holes.
To MERIDIA who contains the Plemun.
To HERMAEUS MORA who holds the Paper to the Light.
To SANGUINE who tastes the Shaven Fruit.
To VAERNIMA Weaver of the Panoply.

I personally find it very interesting, though a lot of it is straightforward. What is Falling Rock? How is Sheogorath the comforter of men? How does Mehrunes Dagon relate to the sun at all? Why would Malacath be associated with language in any way?
>>
>>47261023
>What is Falling Rock?

>How is Sheogorath the comforter of men?

>How does Mehrunes Dagon relate to the sun at all?

>Why would Malacath be associated with language in any way?
Because Boethiah stole his precious voice.
>>
>>47261023
What is more interesting is this Plemun related to Meridia. What is that?

The Azura, Rim of All Holes jape is a little bit funny. I suppose Vivec did it. It's always Vivec.
>>
Something for the thread.
What's your favorite Vivec story?

I like the one about him going to edge of the sea, only to find mountains of rock resembling sharp teeth.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that story is a reference to the engine limitations of the Morrowind game. In that the engine could bug out and generate spiky crazy terrain if you got far enough away from the mainland. I might be wrong. I thought it was a reference. :o

I'm glad you like it! It's certainly not perfect, and it's certainly been a long road, but I'm glad someone enjoys what we've done.

Our upcoming (hopefully next week) patch is gonna address the XP issue.

Power Well is pretty much mandatory, yeah. It's sort of a side effect of going with Morrowind style magic. I've been considering an alternative trait tied to one of the birthsigns that limits your pool severely but allows you RAPID regeneration, giving you the ability to fire off lots of cheaper spells over a long period of time but limiting the powerful high cost shit you can use.

Not sure about implementation though. Working on that one.

Insanity is the comfort of man, as is music.
Besides the other interpretations, having the blazing sun as a mistress sounds like the Ambition he represents.
Foundation of Falling Rock is tricky. I doubt it's referring to destruction of Vivec, so I assuming it has to either be a metaphor for him being lowest on the totem pole, being representative of failure, or having to do with his cosmic body although that would fit Sheogorath better since he's an asteroid belt.

The upcoming patch sounds pretty damn great.

The alternative trait sounds like a good idea and it'll allow for more small-time spellcasting, but does it really have to be tied to one of the birthsigns? Why can't it be an adept/master level talent with prereqs and bonuses?

It could be an extension of the reduced magicka cost per DoS talents, even if I myself am not charmed by those talents. Or it could be a standalone talent.

As much as I like birthsigns, I'd like it more if alternatives could come through training (xp/crp use). If the talent shouldn't have the drawback of cutting down on magicka, then you could simply set up a prerequisite that the character does not have power well.

Then again, I am simply approaching this idea from a game-design perspective and I'd hardly know how to justify it in fluff.

Looking forward to it, man.

False god is still a god.

Would they take written tests?
Do you have to be literate to be a mage?
>>
>>47269061
When I first found Vanua, I thought it was gonna be an underwater area
Was dissapointed
>>
>>47269552
It's probably a safe bet that a mage would have to know how to read and write. You can learn how to cast through reading books, and conjuration would probably require at least basic Daedric runes to be written.
>>
>>47269552
I imagine yes. There are also illiterate hedge-mages, of course, whose traditions are oral, but the Mages Guild is obviously a place of science. The Ald Ruhn guild hall even has a school for the poor who can't read.
>>
Is there ANYTHING in the actual lore that reinforces the ESO's "Water is Memory" idea?
>>
>>47269888
>>47269905
How far do you think a mage could fake it until being unable to read becomes an actual problem
>>
>>47270188
Not far, any established mage would laugh at him at best.
Witch/warlock covens might be more accepting.
>>
>>47270230
So blind people can't be mages?
>>
>>47268920
>Aren't finals happening or some shit?
Yes, but I'm trying my hardest not to work.

>>47269082
True. The same goes for equestrian stuff.
If it's not in the focus of the game, it will usually receive limited information.

>>47269552
Most formal places of education would likely require it. More provincial, traditional forms of magical societies might work more off oral traditions.
The Temples of Julianos promote literacy.

>>47269967
I could swear I've heard the idea well before ESO.
Off the top of my head, I'd say that it might have to do with gods like Herma Mora and Sotha Sil also having connections to the sea, as well as knowledge/memory. Possibly Vaermina too. Maybe it has to do with the Waters of Oblivion.
The Annotated Anuad says that most of the Hist's land was lost under water because of the Ehlnofey War, and I think I've seen some take this as the creation of the ocean. I guess the idea is that the "fallen", or the lost memories of the war floods much of the world.
"The Drowned Lamp" of the 36 Lessons is apparently knowledge that is lost.

I have more, I think, but it's probably not something you'll like.

>>47270389
Sure, they just can't read.
>>
>>47270389

I can't think of any blind people in elder scrolls games besides that bandit in white river watch that's writing an empty book
>>
>>47270505
The Falmer, for example. As well as the numerous characters that fit in the "blind oracle" role. Like Moth Priests. And Daggerfall's Oracle.
>>
>>47267633
No, not Molag Bal, Mehrunes Dagon.
>>
>>47270589
And the Prophet
>>
>>47269421
Oh wow, that image is fantastic
>>
>>47270389
They can, I'm sure. Falmer are blind and can cast magic.
>>
>>47270188
Only so far as their own limitations. I'm sure a very strong willed mage could work spells that normally require reading if trained or figure out themselves.
>>

>I have more, I think, but it's probably not something you'll like.
Hit me.
>>

Actually, yes. At least in Skyrim.

>Imagine living beneath the waves with a strong-sighted blessing of most excellent fabric. Holding the fabric over your gills, you would begin to breathe-drink its warp and weft. >Though the plantmatter fibers imbue your soul, the wretched plankton would pollute the cloth until it stank to heavens of prophecy. This is one manner in which the Scrolls first came to pass, but are we the sea, or the breather, or the fabric? Or are we the breath itself?
>Can we flow through the Scrolls as knowledge flows through, being the water, or are we the stuck morass of sea-filth that gathers on the edge?

I am forever swimming around, amidst this ocean world we call home. My limbs grow weak and weary as my eyes drift skyward in defeat. I remember how warm the earth felt, as I lived and breathed next to her beating heart. I remember enough to keep searching through an ocean of tears, raised to astronomical depths. My dreams offer solace, where I return to distant, faded times. Through trees entwined with cool autumn air, my sorrow is lured by fragrant, bittersweet memories. I am at home as much as my world and consciousness allow. I remember falling into the most beautiful lake I've ever experienced. She swallowed me whole, like a droplet, and I was enraptured and enwombed within her bliss. The lonely windswept desert sky of my soul was filled by her luminous stars and warmed by her sunlit radiance. I gazed downward in awe and saw it all reflected in the shimmering ripples dancing and playing about the surface. It appeared to me as real as the very wonders it was reflecting. I stepped forward to prove to no one and everyone that they were, by belief. For an aching instant I was betwixt the two and the summation. Confusion befell me and I fell through, only to realize I hadn't entered the lake, I had left it. With all of my remaining life I howled at the heavens and collapsed, like a star on the shores of my youth, as my life's breath wandered away from the home it had harbored. I have been drowning on dry land ever since.

I lay there, coital, for heaven knows how long. I felt eons ebb and flow in the spans of seconds. I lived as intently as I could in those endless instants, as the boredom of -after- droned on and on. The fires of my heart grew dim and became only the faintest embers of the roaring blaze they had once been. My limbs, heavy with the weight of the world, protested. I felt the longing of this life which slowly began to ease the agony in my heart. As I was gradually nursed back to health, knowledge of record and history tried desperately to fill the yawning, nauseous chasm of my soul. I began to know the deadpan search for freedom and forgetfulness, and I released the hold on my life. Though it still lurched, pained, in front of me, I just stared back with tired, vacant eyes as if watching the most fascinating of nothing. My mind drifted, only to be slammed back reluctantly, repeatedly, and painfully by those I vaguely remember knowing, as if from a different life and age. I try, in vain, to forgive and forget myself as I paste on those plaster smiles and strain to look levelly. I remember. I forget. I forget again. I remember less. I am saddened at the thought that I have forgotten. I am not who I used to be. Though it pained me so, I was never so real as those lonely, lost times of my undoing. I am torn asunder at the thought of losing forever that, which has changed my life eternally, and that which I fear in the depths of my soul will never be again. That, which has gifted me with more pain than I have ever known in all of my lives or all of the lives that I know through my own.

Who am I to ask this of you?

>I think I've seen some take this as the creation of the ocean
The Annotated Anuad quite blatantly states that the Ehlnofey War created the Oceans

Are you seriously trying to tell me that I shouldn't look at Elder Scrolls lore and try to pick bits of metaphysical truth out of metaphor?
>>
Guess the irc is down? I've never really used it before

>The Annotated Anuad quite blatantly states that the Ehlnofey War created the Oceans
Huh, so it does. Been a while since I read it.

>>47271302
Water is memory is gay and so are people who think so
>>
>>47252345
I just want Highrock to look like Toussaint.
I will die happy
>>
>>47271302
No, I'm seriously telling you to stop forcing meaning out of what is clearly not meant. The quote you pulled is not only from a book that is blatantly based in metaphor, but one that has practically nothing to do with the topic you are trying to associate it with to begin with. The book is trying to explain the experience of reading an Elder Scroll through metaphor, nothing of what is said in any way implies that memory is water.
