>Making Mimics more Frightening

>They can impregnate characters

How do we flesh this out?
Is the spawn some sort of protean mimic that bursts through the chest?
>>
>>47217128
Who said the mimic is the chest?

He's the door.

You know, the only door that leads out of the room?
>>
You could always have the character slowly become a mimic/be taken over from a mimic within which might react to some sort of trigger word or action.

That is rather than having a chest burster mimic.

>>47217128
No

Even male characters.

>the character slowly become a mimic

I'm ok with this
>>
>>47217128
No. They consume the host from the inside out, slowly replacing their body while sedating the host until the transition is complete. Once they have taken over their parent body they will locate the nearest source of treasure (Likely the adventurers it's parent travels with.) and devour them in their sleep. Once it has consumed their bodies and treasure it finds a resting place and reshapes itself into a more "traditional" mimic, entering the adult stage of a mimics life.

Absolutely not.

I'll take "how I lost my gaming group" for a thousand, Alex
>>
>>47217128
Make it "impregnate" them by implanting eggs through a bite attack, like a slaad.

Why is it ok when Ridley Scott does it, but not when I do it?

Mimic armor. Go ahead, don that fancy new breastplate you just found...
>>
>>47217128

If I wanted to make mimics more frightening, I would make them the unholy offspring of venus fly traps and constrictor snakes. The Mimic uses its surprise round to grab and 'eat' you, forcing you into the chest. Once inside, the unfortunate adventurer is slowly suffocated and crushed to death, after which point the mimic digests the remains. A mimic can live off of such a corpse for weeks before needing to feed again, which often involves them scuttling to find higher traffic areas to entice prey.

Magic items and gold are indigestible, so the good news is that if you do kill a mimic, you will find a lot of treasure inside. Just try not to think too much about where it came from.
>>
>>47217128
My setting has tons of different kinds of mimics split into different categories depending on what they are based off of. There's a species of treasure mimic that starts it's life cycle as a gold coin that can sprout legs and a jaw. They have a painful bite, but they're more of a nuisance than anything. As it matures it begins to take the shape of a coinpurse. Anyone reaching inside to fish the coins out is going to lose fingers at least. Then, the mimic reaches it's broodmother stage where it reshapes to resemble a treasure chest. Over years or decades of laying in wait for prey, the mimic births new coin mimics inside their bodies. Eventually, if they're not disturbed, the chest mimic's brood will be so numerous that it cannot keep it's lid closed and thousands of coin mimics will spill out to find new dungeons or into the pockets of adventurers or peasants in order to spread to new locations.

And mimic spawn has to burst through the chest for the pun, also to kill or at least injure the character enough that they can't get up and tell anyone else about it.

Mimic can perfectly imitate the character's speech, actions, personality, etc. and even has their memories.
Only thing different is that when within hugging range they burst into something more like your pic, with sharp teeth and maybe extra limbs bursting out for the hug, with the intent to devour or impregnate new victim. Essentially make the spawn of a mimic another mimic, but instead of a treasure chest it mimics the player it came from.

Would be more eerie if mimic spawn can't approach people for the purpose of getting within range. For mysterious unknown reasons they can move freely and follow and even stalk their victims but cannot directly approach them. This means they have to lure victim towards them.

Really they could attempt to lure the victim by saying they have something to show them or something like that, but I think it would be more frightening if they specifically lure you into hugging them. Like actual mimics play off your greed and lure you with promises of loot, this one plays off your need for companionship in a world where /d/ is the law of the land, luring you with promises of emotional satisfaction through physical contact.

So it looks like a cute girl offering her hole, but when you get close it bursts a johnson and plugs you?
>>
>>47217943

You're not Ridley Scott.

>Cormac McCarthy wrote without punctuation why cant I
>>
>>47219883
It looks like a cute offering to tell you a secret of hers, or to snuggle, or something cozy like that.

But there is no coziness. Only rape.
>>
The mimic's saliva is necrotic by nature while their bite is venomous. Upon being bitten by a mimic the skin around the wound quickly begins to rot and blister while a fast acting poison works to paralyze the nervous system and keep the wound open by acting as an anti-coagulant.

Most mimic deaths come from either shock, a stoppage of the heart, or bleeding out. Quick work must be done to prevent any of these three from happening.

Dan O'Bannon muthafucka.

Ridley Scott is an amazing director who chooses scripts by drunkenly stumbling around a dark room full of manuscripts and producing the first one he touches.

Can't we just make mimics sexier instead?
>>
>>47219982
You can't rape the willing
>>
The mimic bites and paralyses you, then drags your limp body to an old box/chest/whatever and forcefully shoves you in, breaking limbs until you fit. There, you slowly change into the next generation of mimic.

You make an obvious trap, and force the players to fall for it.

With a seasoned party, one expects wary players to be a bit reticent when you give the telltale signs of weird shit going on. Polished chest in an old and dusty forgotten tomb, directly beneath the sole source of light in the room, it has no lock unlike the three previous chest, maybe there was a raid earlier and the previous adventurers didn't take this chest alone - or better yet, the corpse/skeleton of a rogue is reaching out to the chest.

So, what you do is, you make the baitest of chest ever and them you pimp it. It's a hot pink, almost looks like plastic, there's blood all around it, there are various mispelled graffiti all around it(something along the lines of : TRESURE HERE! or big pointy arrows leading the vision to if with AVENTURES WELCOME! written in a wavy, crude and heavy childish font(Comic Sans)), it's the only thing in the room, sitting in a pedestal right in front of the players.

When they refuse the obvious trap, force one of the players to open it. Argue their character has poor wisdom and doesn't know any better, or is too greedy to leave a stone left unturned. Make a point of painstakingly explaining every detail of the blood caked oak, the eerie off distorted reflection of their visage in the glistening white curved almost smiling stainless steel lock, the terrified frozen rictus of their companions as they slowly reach for the chest, every thought on the character's head, each and which ones of their asshairs stand on end. Literally masturbate about how you are going to dance on the ashes of their character sheet.

And then...

Fuck it. Don't have it impregnate at all. Have it's spawn just look like small valuable items and the mimic just allows the pcs to pick them up and take them. PCs gotta rest sometime.

DM sort of did something like that where mimics in order to reproduce, would kidnap a victim into themself and basically create a small simulation of sorts to trick the victim into accepting the situation and reproducing with them.

So two examples of the cases we encountered, a peasant woman had been taken into one, where it recreated the farm she lived on and the people that lived there as well. It created a situation where a handsome charming man started working on the farm and lured her into a relationship, from which it produced more mimics with her, though within the simulation and seemingly to her it was as if she had a normal happy life with a man she loved and their children together. As a housewife and the mimic fashioning the simulation to keep her busy, she never had a reason to go beyond the bounds of the simulation which ended pretty much like 1000 feet in any direction from the house.

Other situation, one of our party got nabbed by one and it made a simulation of the inn where it happened, and tricked him into a relationship with the maid as well as the occasional fling with other simulated women. As with the peasant woman, it kept him confined to the boundaries of the simulation with horrible weather and a supposed threat of monsters on the boundaries, while making it seem like the rest of the party was always en route to the inn.

So yeah, basically they would nab a victim into a small simulated world and try to willingly keep them there by making th simulation seem perfect and amazing to live in. It would do this with one victim at a time to keep as it's ongoing mate supposedly until they died or couldn't reproduce anymore, after which it would seek a new victim. There was a pretty disturbing case we encountered and fortunately put an end to, where a mimic had kidnapped a young child into a simulated happy "magical" funtime candyland, basically a child's dream come true, and was holding onto them till they matured enough to be able to reproduce.

I had a mimic toilet in one of my campaigns. It was hilarious

Mimic book.

Instead of treasure it holds the arcane texts of an ancient tome on its feathery pages. You can kill the mimic, but in doing so you destroy the secret knowledge you came for.

Makes for a bitch of a time copying things down into your spellbook. Especially when you get to the serpent sigil it copied on page 6...... or the symbol of paralysis in the secret compartment hidden in the back cover.

>>47217128
In my setting mimics are essentially large bacteria and unless you burn them or dissolve them in acid they reform into smaller and smaller ones. The smaller ones look like they one they spawned from until they see something that looks more like their size. The largest ones are the size of islands
